Being a bad mentor(we should be able to report ppl for being a bad mentor)

Ive recently come back to the game and leveled a couple of classes from 60-70. When running dungeons, I've found that the mentors are often the worst players. Sprouts usually outplay them. It's kind of strange. I didn't play for three years, and don't remember this being a thing back then.

I got into a group last night with 3 other mentors, and it went about as expected. I couldn't do big pulls, and two of the boss fights were a challenge. I try not to judge based on this stuff, but I'm almost to the point of giving a deep sigh every time I'm grouped with multiple mentors.

If other people are new, it's still a nice thing to answer questions. People are so seldom willing to learn that I get excited seeing someone actually asking for help. And if this is the Mentor's Mentor Roulette, well they are expected to at least clarify if there is uncertainty or confusion. It's downright rude to stand there and tell someone "you aren't worth my time, I only want the rewards" when you're wearing a crown, in my opinion.

I still don't understand the flak the OP is getting. They came in prepared, but who's to say another newbie did not, or that the OP requested clarification on something they weren't entirely sure on, and were shot down by someone who was supposed to be there to help out. Because they weren't worth the "Mentor's" time.

They never said they are undergeared, want to be carried, or don't want to learn...in fact they said they looked up a guide for the extreme. Newbies rarely do that and it is a good thing that OP looked it up in order to prepare.

If anything it shows they don't want to be carried, but they still might need some extra help ingame since newbies are newbies. Yes, you can't force a mentor to explain things so OP is incorrect about their idea that mentors can be punished for simply not typing anything, but I don't see anything wrong with the OP as a player so I don't get this rant at them.

I know you said not you personally, but you seem to be singling them out with all of this rant as well by adding them "collectively" to people who complain about mentors.

This seems like a lot of misplaced anger. OP didn't hurt you.

Before you quote yourself, the fact that you think I'm singling them out is your own problem, don't make it mine. I don't know them personally so there is no way in hell I could ever refer to them in that regard, it's literally impossible in every single given or imagined way.

This is the reason.

To me it is like you are saying "Not you...but actually wait...yes you too." since OP is technically complaining about mentors...so /shrug

Your wording might not have been chosen very well because to me it does seem like you are lumping them into all of this.

It might be my own problem, but I am free to post my opinion anyway no matter if you think I am trying to force it to be your problem or whatever :)

I might be in the minority but in my eyes a mentor is just another player, I am not going to hold them to a higher standard because they have a crown next to their name. You run into helpful people and you run into not so helpful a crown has very little to determine that. Personally I think people expect far too much from "mentors" and by no means do I buy that they should be held to some paragon standard, Mentor system was simply SE poor attempt to provide an incentive to prompt generally good favorable behavior. In SE fashion they try to bait players with carrots. Oddly enough most mentors I ran into simply went through all the hopes to be part of the closest thing FFXIV has to a general chat in game.

I loved being a Mentor at first, gave genuine advice (used to before Mentor was a thing), but got burnt out. People just don't care, period. Someone out of many might actually listen to you, but the rest? If you're nice, they ignore you, if you're not too nice, they throw insults at you. Either way, it's a lost situation.

I don't want to make it any better. I've tried, for years, since 2.0. Like I said, people don't just care, and those who do won't start these threads. I don't care about the community, said so a few times here already, so I just say whatever crosses my mind. Nothing's gonna change, so you guys might as well ignore me? It was my point of view, nothing's gonna change that on the forums, only if I ever saw a real change in-game.

My actions in-game is what defines me, when I try to give friendly advice, when I genuinely try and help people by picking up their slack (knowing that they're trying hard), not by posting in here. So my conscience is clear.

Sorry you got burnt out, if you are going to give advice to a bunch of strangers you are bound to run into a few that will not take kindly to it. Also a part of it does sound like you took the role a tad too seriously, I mean it is awesome you enjoyed helping others in-game sad truth like anything mentor or not you will run into assholes that simply do not care. Just do you man.

The problem is that the mentor system breaks down in synced EX content, because it's not a matter of helping newbies with the game then; its arguably as much endgame as the current ex trials, just with no real worthwhile rewards. People who DF it usually are completely new to it and will spend the whole lockout learning, which ends up removing any reward for mentors to do it save their own good nature. So you get mentors really not liking them when they come up.
