I imagine since Red Mage is being added (and IF it is a Sharlayan Job), -if- we go to Sharlayan in 5.0 as has been suggested in the past, that Derplander might go Red Mage in the cinematic. To explain a bit further, comments from the Developers in, I believe, one of the Live Letters, explained that the expansions 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 are telling the story of the rebuilding of the Eorzean Alliance. 3.0 was about Ishgard, 4.0 is about Ala Mhigo, which leaves 5.0 to bring Sharlayan back. Any expansion that would feature Sharlayan would certainly be a Magic-Heavy expansion in terms of NPCs and story I bet.
Otherwise we have characters like Y'shtola, Alisae and Alphinaud, Urianger, Unukalhai, and formerly Papalymo, to build out that Magic role.
Alphinaud is pretty clearly an Arcanist and is a main character throughout both ARR and Heavensward.
Also, with the way some lore works in this game, not everyone is running around as a "job". The Warrior of Light is a unique individual, and all of the other people you group with are merely adventurers. For instance, the Warrior of Light is able to become a White Mage, but there aren't hundreds of White Mages roaming Eorzea. It is a job that is very limited. The lore is actually sort of pesky given that all of the "adventurers" you team up with can have White Mage abilities. I imagine it's difficult to truly RP as a White Mage. As far as the main story goes, though, the Warrior of Light (you) is really the only person adventuring (potentially) as a White Mage.
mmm there's obviously a sever lack of magic in FF games.
Louisioux calling on the 12 to seal Bahamut, doesn't count.
Estinien using the dragon eye, becoming nidhogg - Thordan and the knights becoming primals, doesn't either?
Sorry, but magic ALWAYS has a strong presence.
Sorry using your post to help emphasize the point here for the OP on character roles. I've added the jobs roles into your post for the ones I was sure of.
One character you had missed was Alsisa or how ever it's spelt, not quite sure what she was job wise because she never summoned anything that I had seen but after her transforming her book into a sword causes me to suspect she becomes a rdm. There has been lots of magic aspects through out ARR, HW, and until the second expansion comes out to be sure there'll be magic aspects there too.
I'm sure at some point there will be an expansion that showcases a magic class in the future.
