When it comes to fates, and you are the one tanking it with high risk of death. knock back away.
Its Rude. Use it only when the mob needs to be move or when you are in danger or being atked by that enemy.
I only use it for certain instances. It targets me and reaches me (and the tank has not attempted), its casting and no one interrupts it (depending on cast), or its against a wall/can't be moved. The one thing I can't stand is people who use it with no regards forcing the tanks and melee dps to chase after it.
It's annoying as hell but at the same time, if it's used correctly, so are the people who complain about it. I once used fluid aura on the gil turtle guildhest to actually push it to the herb patch, and someone got angry at me and then told me it was pointless and didn't do any damage. /Shrug
in any non-group fate it's really a competition for kill credit and mob exp
if there are limited mobs and I have to fight for the credit, I won't hesitate knock back mobs so casters can't do more dmg on them
yet if I see a low dps player, say PLD, struggling in an unpopular fate, then I will only help him killing the targets he claimed without claiming mine(I believe many people don't really realize that as long as you deal enough dmg to any target, you get the credit for killing).
so it's really situational.
and a simple answer to open's question - no, it's not rude, especially when it comes to melee vs dot casters. we need to think more in others' boots
Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: It's complicated.
Like others said, if it's for extra dps, then it's horrible. Even more so when someone decides to knock it BEHIND the tank. (NEVER DO THIS, BTW. NEVER)
In group scenarios, you need to be aware of the group make-up. DRG/MNK/NIN in the group? Probably not a good idea to knock the current target away from them... making them lose dps in chase-time.
If it's done to knock it away from a healer, moving a caster to the tank, knocking a CC target out of aoe, or absolutely certain it'll be the killing shot... go for it.
I actually got a lot of comm's in low level roulette on my MCH for saving under-geared tanks by using the knockback+bind combo when the healer needed a moment to catch up in healing. :D
I only use knockback in PvE if:
A) The target is already close to a wall and the knockback is negligible.
B) I know the target is immune.
C) It is low on health and I know the knockback will kill it.
Otherwise, no. Its annoying for the tank to have to re-position mobs because of knockback.
I don't know about rude, but it's certainly stupid. I try to make sure the mobs are positioned in a way to minimize my damage intake and maximize the groups damage output. Does this seem like a good time to send one mob flying way the heck over yonder? Guess who I'm not spending my commendation on at that point?
