The only macro I use outside of being with friends is my provoke macro, the only reason I made it was because I kept getting paired with other tanks that couldn't swap correctly.
What is the macro about?
I have provoke and raise macros that I change up from time to time, but I have a /wait 1 after the action and before the party line to make sure that neither get super spammed. I think those are a lot more tolerable than the huge ASCII macros that people spam, or tanks with pacification macros that feel the need to put in sound effects on each line of a 5 or 10-second countdown.
Raid warning macros are fine, as long as they aren't too obnoxious. "raising target player" is usually nice so I don't blow a swiftcast on someone else's target. It IS a bit lame, though, when people are using macros that shout advice when it doesn't match the situation. I love when someone blows virus on an invulnerable boss, and the macro tells me to "attack now". Or when the Berserk macro tells me to Esuna in 3..2..1.. as we are walking down a hallway fighting absolutely nothing.
Them hallways be dangerous.
The only macros I find don't find aggravating are the ones where the tank pulls the boss. Countdowns before pulling r gud.
Provoke, Raise, and Song macros I find to be important.
Honestly, I do use macros, but only on two of my skills. Resurrection and Convalescence. On Resurrection, I keep it short in just a yell that says "Reviving <t>", since I use this skill quite often and the point of a macro on it is just to let people know not to waste their time or swifcast to revive my target. On Convalescence however, I do have more of a short phrase asking people to heal me, because I use the skill far less often and if I am forced to use it, it means I'm at low health and drawing the healer's attention to it while the buff is up is a little more pertinent. I do have a mild attempt at poor humor at the end of Convalescence, but again, as I use it so infrequently, I don't consider it to be at annoying level. Having a short phrase on something used infrequently is fine, though I would strongly advise against it on something you are likely to use several times in a fight. I would also like to say that people should only use the sound effects if it is something that really needs to grab people's attention and that you would only be rarely using. Most of the time people will notice something popping up in the chat even during the middle of a fight, regardless of whether a sound effect is used.....
