Before you do a duell, you enter a queue. Then the DF find a duell partner for you. This way nobody can challenge not interested players.
Maybe with a duell arena in wild west theme?

In the couple of years I've played WoW, I've never had an experience where duelist would ruin my experience. In fact it became a past time for me and my fiance to sit out front of the alliance main city and watch the duelist go at it. We'd get an invite, and after being declined they'd go else where.
I personally love this game, and would love to be able to duel my FC mates in area's such as the ruins of Nym, the red ice area of coerthas, and especially on some of the floating islands coming in Heavens Ward. You ever have a duel which results in both members being knocked off a cliff, turning the fight into some DBZ free fall only to be saved by that protrusion from the cliff? Or to duel complete stranger who had his PVP flag on, and get low levels to stop and watch the the rounds?
Duels in the open world can lead to some amazing fights that cannot be replicated in battle grounds or dungeons. That leads to me having more fun. Is my fun not as important as yours? If they go the route WoW did, the most they could do is send you tells. Black list for the day, do your thing, and everything is solved. We're not asking for ganking. We're not asking for griefing. We simply want the option to duel with our friends in the open world. Not being locked in a bland coliseum.
Thought this was coming in the Golden Saucer at some point? either way, I would love to see this, I know that in any 1v1 situation I come into in FL I always come out on top. If it starts completely even at any rate. I would also like to see a PvE Coliseum where you have 1/2/3/4v unlimited enemies back to back. see how long you last and have ranked ladders. Probably not explaining that last one right but I hope I at least get the gist of things across.
duels wouldn't be a great addition to this game. Not because it wouldn't add anything or "insert XXX reason about how bad and toxic wild PvP is", but because of job balance.

It has. A lot. some classes are just too cheated in 1v1 situations (namely, scholar) to allow any form of 1v1 to come. This game has been created with a team approach, which means the classes are totally unbalanced when it comes to solo playing (SCH or SMN > all) but as a group, the balance is nearly perfect. It would result in only 2 things :
A) people stop 1v1 totally. No one ever uses this feature because it's either "you're in the right job" or "you're wrecked" so they just stop thinking about it
B) the community becomes insanely toxic with people ganking people who just want to play their way through the game, insults, bashing, shaming, etc... Things that happen in all the other MMOs I know with wild PvP.
I'm not sure if you want that for the game, but I'm sure I don't. B is out of the question. As for A... well, Wolf's den is already a unused feature because people don't like it. I'd rather SE fix this before trying to add an other unused feature
I don't want 1v1 pvp system. I want a pk system where we can just go out and kill random players and troll them :D:D:D:D:D:D
If there is a real "need" for 1v1 pvp, they should add it as a sub part of the pvp Den of thingie.
No to the "I challenge you here and now because you pulled the hunt NM early and I shall shame you in front of the people and if you refuse, I will stalk you for days".
Oh yes please please. Dueling in the open world is something I've been missing. And XIV really has fitting areas for this kind of thing.
I'm not a fan of PVP but 1 v 1 duels makes for great social entertainment and I had a lot of fun doing that in other MMOs with the groups of players sitting around specific areas just fighting and talking to each other. This is something I really can't see any negative in allowing.
