New Quest to teach Tanks what Marking is for. Mandatory Please.

I mark on rare occasions when I tank. This is when the dps is just too plain awesome and I find my abilities to keep threat just not sufficient. I'm a terrible tank, but really... how hard is it to keep threat on a bunch of mobs?

Perhaps it should be amended in the OP's request: Tanks that can't hold threat should mark. :P Those tanks know who they are but don't want to admit it. They just spam "Rage of Hello" and do nothing else. If a mob peels off and goes after a healer, they just leave it. "Ain't nobody got time for dat!" Right? :p I see it all the time in daily roulette. When I was leveling my scholar, I marveled at Eos's ability to tank entire dungeons more effectively than the tanks I got. She could hold threat very well, and took less damage than these tanks (who often never bothered to update their gear or perhaps were missing entire pieces of gear entirely). I mean, I did Vale in duty finder and got a tank that had nothing on the right side...AT ALL! NO ACCESSORIES! :P

At low levels you don't have access to your full arsenal of hate holding skills. And you're often being paired with DPS in at least partial Darklight. And even synced that high level gear in low level dungeons can pull hate pretty easily if DPS decide to go after their own target.

If the tank is not marking, however, the onus is on the DPS to take a second and make sure they're attacking the correct mob. Look at the hate meters. Be aware. Be like Smokey the bear: "Only you can prevent party wipes."

Thanks cause this is mainly what I'm talking about.

IDK how people got all high and mighty about not needing to mark mobs because they can hold hate, when that's not what I was talking about. You're doing level 50 content and you can hold hate without marking that's great. Cause I've been to plenty of runs on my MNK where tank's Cant keep hate.

I guess some people just don't do low level dungeons, They missed the "Patch Notes" on EXP in 2.1....

So I am talking about low level dungeons.

Got to love macros cause I can run toward a group of mobs, Mark and pull. But besides that Players need to speak up and say "Hey I'm the tank I will pull so please stop" I leveled WAR last week 41-50 in the stone vigil about 16 runs total. Didn't have a fail run or DPS acting stupid because I said what was going on, Its called communication some people should learn it.

If I'm on MNK I could care less if the tank is marking. I know my job and I know how to live if shit goes wrong. But I started leveling up SCH playing in low level dungeon and have seen some crappy tanking. Give them a lil advice and guess what the runs get better. Also it shouldn't be DPS or healers marking that is for the tank.

I'm on PS3 so I have L2+ Square(1) L2+Triangle(2) L2+O(3) on my second hotbar. But I have my pull macros with Marking 1 so if I'm doing a Speed Run I just mark one and if needed I'll just switch over mark the other mobs while I do my rotations. So when holding down L2 I can just use R1 to cycle through mobs.

Here's what I do to prevent my tab targeting from focusing onto mobs outside of the group, on the other end of the room/hallway.

When you pick up your group, established hate, positioned them nicely...turn the camera around, so that all you see in your screen are the group of mobs you are tanking. This way, tab targeting hardly fails me.

Alternatively, I just open the Signs menu, and leave it on an open space in my UI (usually below the minimap on the top right hand corner). When I see a group, I just go Tab - 1, Tab - 2, Tab - 3. It's a 5 seconds job for me to mark 3 mobs. That said, I use tab targeting for rotating my aggro, so I still use the above trick of adjusting the camera angle.

My tank is only lv 41, but I mark adds. I put #1 on the target I hope the DPS will burn down first(the one that AoEs or w/e). Recently I came across some guy that had a complete freak out on me about it. "I'M NOT FOLLOWING MARKS! MARKS ARE STUPID HERE, THIS ISN'T AN ENDGAME DUNGEON. I SAID STOP MARKING! I'LL AGGRO WHAT I WANT, WHEN I WANT!" etc.

Then the healer stopped healing him and he freaked out on her. I didn't know the healer, but I didn't mind her stopping. :p

I know it's possible to hold hate without marking in pre-50 dungeons, but on the flip side of the coin, you also get people who yell at tanks for not marking in them more often than not. It's hard to please. Everyone has different opinions on this subject, and some are willing to be vicious about it.

I play DPS mostly cause I like it and I like to think I'm good at it, I do like when tanks mark the targets but I don't find it necessary, since it's pretty easy to follow what the tank is targeting.
I've had instances where the second DPS will proceed to harass the tank cause he got attacked after pulling hate away from the tank, then get mad at me for taking "The Tank's Side" cause I explained that we as DPS' should be target following the tank.

I do get where they are coming from though, since I think most DPS don't realize how enmity works, so they think no matter what, if they get targeted it means the tank is bad. I am guilty of this since before I learned my role better and learned about enmity in the game, I thought tanks just magically had the ability to keep hate from all enemies.

The game doesn't really explain to any DPS only players about controlling hate so unless they go out of their way to learn about it (LOL), that is the effect.

So tanks need a quest line to teach them how to mark, but for dps, you just preach communication and all is solved. Hypocrite much? Was there a quest line that taught dps to follow marks? What a load of crap. And don't go assuming your 16 runs is a sufficient representation of how communication works in DF, because I've seen my share of people that refuse to listen to others, regardless of the role they're playing in the party. DF CT sometime if you're unsure about that claim.

That's it! We need a mandatory quest that teaches DD to attack mark targets in order and not to pull before the tank!

Mandatory quests for all mechanics of the game! In fact, you shouldn't be allowed to leave your starting city without a full-blown tutorial on how to video game.

Once I've established hate, sure. I'm still using the lame .. I mean "Standard" .. movement controls, so the camera turns automatically. (just got a new trackball and getting used to Legacy controls) I was thinking pre-pull. I was having issues in CC where I wanted to mark a mob in the group I was going to pull but it was behind a pillar. There was a mob in a different group in view across the room and tab kept jumping to that one (which changes the camera so I can't see the other mobs anymore... why I need to get off Standard movement)

It didn't occur to me to mark the mobs once they are already gathered in front of me (and I've gotten off my flashes) since by the time the first one goes down I will have ALL THE HATE!! But since we are talking about low-level dungeons, I can see the use.

I agree that a quest or some mention of marking would be helpful. I had no idea where to find them until I was several dungeons in.

If your DPS aren't retarded they can figure out what to attack without the tank marking every single mob and holding their hands like children.

If your DPS are retarded, dying a few times usually teaches them to attack what the tank is attacking.
