I wonder if there's an occasional issue where the hate mod does not get applied when going into Shield Oath?
Well it actually makes sense though. I was thinking Shield Oath wasn't working. In my case my OT switched from Shield to Sword. Therefore he'd continue getting the threat bonus and the DPS bonus making it difficult for me to keep up in threat.
That extra 50dmg a swing makes a difference!
At the end of the day, threat management is important. I watch my threat I want to be near the MT incase he dies but not close enough that one good hit will cause me to overtake him.
Shield Oath does apply the enmity modifier. The issue is that Sword Oath is inheriting Shield Oath's enmity modifier when you go to Sword Oath directly from Shield Oath, rather than turning Shield Oath off and activating Sword Oath (or activating Sword Oath from nothing). Try attacking something without any Oath up and then attack something with Shield Oath up; you'll generate a helluva lot more enmity with it than without it and, with Sword Oath (applied from a null state), you'll only generate marginally more.
Eh, if you notice your OT doing this, just tell them to turn Sword Oath off and then back on again. The bug only applies when you go directly from Shield Oath to Sword Oath. If you turn off Shield Oath and then turn on Sword Oath, the enmity modifier isn't applied. I've run with quite a few random tanks in DF that think that everyone else sucks at aggro management because every time they OT, they go straight from Shield to Sword and either rip aggro from the MT or ride their ass the entire time. In their minds, the MT has terrible enmity generation because, when *they* tank, they've always got a huge cushion and it couldn't *possibly* be their own exploitation of a bugged mechanic that's causing the problem. More than a few I know of don't think that it's a bug at all and think that Sword Oath is *supposed* to help generate obscene enmity (which makes no sense since it's the offtank stance and only applies it in a single situation). A lot of the pugs don't believe me until I tell them to turn Sword Oath on and back on again to verify it; they generally get humbled a bit when they see that, no matter what they do, they can't make any kind of dent in the MT's enmity cushion unless they use it as it's bugged.
I've noticed this bug with Sword Oath for some time now and assume that either SE added a special modifier to the skill or accidentally copied code from Shield Oath. I'm already an enmity monster in my FC static, but this has made off-tanking difficult where sword oath's extra damage would have been a boon (I.E Titan EX/Coil/etc.)
I feel so.much.better now that I've seen this. In the past week, in 2 different CT runs, I've had an OT pull hate from me while they were in Sword Oath, despite me being i90 and doing max aggro rotation while they're in DL with a relic. I couldn't understand why it was happening and it depressed me so much I considered upping my drinking to "girl you got a problem" levels.
