Yeah this does sound a bit fishy... So far SE have been very communicative with the community and something of this scope would probably be revealed to us through a Developer's Letter or something of the sort, in my view. When they decided to make FFXIV free to play and had Tanaka step down, that was first released in the Lodestone (unless I missed something), so why would they choose an obscure (to us westerners at least) chinese website to realease this info now instead of just comming out with it? I mean, its not like they were hoping we wouldn't find out or something. =P
iirc they mentioned it happened around novemeber but announced in december.
No idea. But it's no less weird than ZAM :D
Anyway, if there's any shred of truth in it we're gonna know soon. E3 is around the corner, and if SE is going to officially announce a PS3 version anytime soon, they're going to do it there, no doubt.
I was expecting an accouncement by E3 (even if my release prediction was around fall) regardless of this, Yoshida restarted talking about the PS3 version on Dengeki Playstation, after not saying a word about it in the last few months, which very possibly means that things are moving.
I will not make the same mistake I did last year and tell anyone to remain optimistic; however, always keep in mind it isn't impossible that they could release a lot of content and plan for an August/September "re-debut" of FFXIV. However, it just so happens that I will agree the probability of it is extremely low with everything considered.
If it happens, great; if not, well it better remain a F2P game because I can play plenty of F2P games with more content if I want.
Content will be much less of a problem quite soon. During summer they're going to release dungeons (which include new quests), companies (which include new quests as well) and jobs (which include new quests, three), new NMs, and new sidequests. Depending on how they are implemented, that has the potential to be quite a big chunk of content added. The fact that there isn't much time from now to the end of summer doesn't mean much, simply because as yoshida clearly explained multiple times, things have been worked on in paralel for quite a while.
I suggest playing the FF III remake for the DS it's honestly one of my favorite Final Fantasy games because it has that old school feeling when games used to have tons of content and freedom to play in your own way because of the Job-system.
When I played it I was shocked how much XI has the same feeling as III they're almost like twin games.
