Possible = yes

The PS3 is already on the end of it's lifespan and the only virus you will find is "a virus named tom" (which is a videogame apparently, never head of it until today, its on steam too)

PC may play better than PS3. But to my knowledge I don't think anyone has ever been hacked on PS2/PS3 or 360 for FFXI or FFXIV. Plus if you have FFXIV PS3 you get to upgrade on PS4 next year for free.

As far as I know from a security stand-point:
Everything that connects to the outside world can be infected. Whether or not there is mal/spy/ad/whateverware for your particular console/build is another thing. However, some people like to poke hornet's nests and even if there is no obvious incentive, they might have a go at PS#.
Economical stand-point:
As far as I know, PS4/Xbone/this gen's consoles will have fees to play online games. On top of the fee you already pay to S-E for FFXIV, and whatever you pay your ISP.
What can go wrong stand-point:
With PC, there is you, your ISP and S-E where things may go south.
With consoles, there is you, your console, your ISP and S-E.
Drawback of PC is that every PC build is different, and even if you do everything right, the others in the chain might go "user error because wrong bad RAM/conga-line to your grandmother's house".
Adding to that, it is certainly easier (or should be) to just fire up your console and know that it is advertised as being compatible with the game.
On longevity, I usually go with PC, given that you do a little research. If you have a good computer store that you can trust, you might be able to get help picking parts and assembling your own system. On the other hand, if you get a PS4 and only plan to play for 3-5 years, it shouldn't be much of an issue.

The largest change to the game in the foreseeable future to the game client will be the DX11 update for PC. Unless your system is a year old, people might have to upgrade their PC to run things at max settings after this update.
As it was mentioned already in this thread, if you'd prefer to play on console you can get a free upgrade to PS4 when it comes out. The PS4 is pretty comparable to current gen PCs spec wise so it *should* boast graphics that are comparable to max settings on the PC client currently.

Whichever you feel most comfortable with. FFXI came out on PS2 and THAT is still being supported by SE. When the PS4 version is released the PS3 version will be the weakest technically, but it will be supported for several years to come.

All these long, opinionated, sometimes biased answers when all you needed do was address the topic. The most future-proof platform is obviously PC, parts can be upgraded as they grow obsolete and, hopefully, the Wine community will have good compatibility before too long so we can play without Windows. The safer platform is clearly PS3. Unlike Windows, there's no hacker community trying to get into it to steal your data or destroy the OS. You can't even load your own OS onto it anymore thanks to Sony. Yes, we will be getting free upgrades to PS4, but that's not really an upgrade, more like a slide sideways. Sure, it's a stronger system, but it's still a game console and will be outpaced by computers in short order, if not already.

none of them are future proof ps3-4 and pc .. im getting error code after error codes.. if SE dont fix their end nothing is future proof. Their customers (us Paying customers) are not future proof you can bet on that SE that's our error code for you.

Short term PS3, Long term PS4/PC Forever get a new PC in 2 years time and never have a issue.

I have always played a mixture of games on PC's and Consoles and they all have their Pro's and Con's. It is down to the individual to decide what is right for them.
I heard over the years about the PC master race etc and i have always laughed about it, mainly because it is a huge vat of dung.
Neither is better than the other. They both have their good and bad sides.
Only the PC side of the argument have to back up their large spending spree's constantly and try and ram their opinions down the throats of anyone who is in ear/eye range.
Obviously both sides can be as bad as the other but to most people who are more interested in just having a good time playing games it is a boring topic.
