Being a Dragoon myself I don't have much problem getting into a group that does coil. The main problem people have is that melee dps are undependable in boss battles and are a liability. That is completely understandable because I have seen a lot of mindless dps who don't know how to dodge and just die 1/4 way into the battle.
What it basically boils down to is if you are good and dependable dps. How do you prove that? I dunno. Groups usually question me about my experience.
Tanks and Healers will always be in demand for many reasons. As a dps, just suck it up and prove you're better than the rest by getting the best gear you can get and the most experience. Do coil runs with pug groups or your FC for fun without the aim of completing it. The experience you get is worth it.
People rarely shout for DD for coil for the same reason we have longer wait times in DF, there are more of us, so the DD spots fill quickly and easily. If even the people you play with regularly don't want to bring you, then that may be a different story. My mnk is consistently highest dps in my FC, even on movement intensive fights like Titan. However, a lot of people suck at melee DD jobs, and even though plenty of people suck at ranged DD, it is easier to get decent dmg out of a sucky bed than it is a sucky mnk, and the sucky brd probably won't get hit as often as the sucky mnk, so in PUGs people hedge their bets and choose ranged DD a lot. As for cool, every group I know has at least one melee DD, but that's just my experience.
The funny thing is, Monks, at least, are tedious to play (i've not played monk or drg past level 10) and people still play them. Simple fact is, people don't care if they're doing it badly as long as they're fun.
No, instead ranged DD need positional requirements (I don't really want this) or melee need them mostly removed. It's a big deal to dodge your red, still get in proper position, dodge the tank's/other melee's red, and also have to deal with the boss either turning because of one his attacks or because the tank moved him. In a game like wow where dancing fights aren't so common, positional requirements would be okay, but in this game they put too much load on a melee and ranged jobs, especially bard, shine so much more.
While Bard's LB is stupid, if a ranged had a single target limit break, noone would bring melees at all.
why not just make monks invincible? that way you do not need tanks or healers.
