Luls...why wouldn't you exploit a mobs elemental weakness? That's how you solo most efficiently.
It would be no different from the mob exploiting a mage's low defense after closing the range between them.
Clearly the idea is to keep distance between you and the mob by using spells and abilities that stop the mob(s) from closing in on you. All the while nuking them down based on their weakness so you consume less MP.
What a concept. derp.
Didn't say it was right or wrong to exploit the mob's weakness. But it just so happens that BLM only has three elements; Fire costs quite a bit of MP and will AoE sometimes-unwanted adds, but is feasible. Blizzard doesn't chain, has a longer cast time, and you'd probably still do better with thunder on a wind-based mob. So fighting a mob that's weak to thunder is the easiest possible.
Though it's obviously the best route for people that will solo while leveling, I don't think the majority of people that solo at 50 (quests, farming, etc) will have such free choice of what mobs to kill. ^^;
That said, I don't think soloing anything is difficult enough that a job (especially one with sleep) will have any trouble. With or without cross-classing. I was just commenting on what Felis said. :P
Well I can't really argue over the limited elements able to be used by mages (or the different mechanics between each kind for no specific reason). I personally think that it was a dumb idea to split them up like they did. However I am pretty sure that both the blizzard type spells have movement reducing effects which makes them extremely useful in any solo situation. Fire being the only AoE for THM/BLM(?) is kind of a dumb concept as well but I suppose some AoE is better than none. If a mob is strong against thunder I suppose it would just take a bit more of nuking to get it down...though that's not a valid answer honestly.
just a simple question. yoshi p talked about the minimum level requirements for achieving the job quests..
minimum requirements for a white mage as an example:
conjurer at lv 30+ and gladiator at lv 15+
you are gaining job skills through quests at specific levels, right? so if i want to have the level 40 whm skill i need to have at least a level 40 conjurer... so do i need lv 40 conjurer and gladiator at lv 20??
or how does this work?
You know, at first I wanted to say "You'll only need the level 15 requirement at 15, and the lv.30 requirement will be the one that levels with your main class." However, I don't know that for sure.
What if we did need to level the lower requirement further to unlock the higher job quests--for example, the final WHM job quest might require CNJ50 and GLA25? I would cry. I hope Answa is right, that you need Lv.30 in one class and Lv.15 in another to unlock a job, but after that the quests will just require the job to be at a certain level.
I hope one of the devs can drop by to answer your question.
