It's not rotten. It's called being realistic.

Everyone who's played XIV for a while will know that you simply can't do well at core content like Ex trials unless you do a bit of research. Be it about your class or about the trial itself.
I don't expect everyone to adapt to the mechanics in there - the worst that can happen is be delighted by seeing the small handful of people who do play incredibly well given how new they are.

Either way I'm staying away from the Mentor roulette because of said reason, Ex trials is where I draw the line in terms of wanting to help new players.
You can Mentor people in whatever fashion you like, either teach them the ropes and lead them in the right direction so they do become the kind of players you'd be happy to be teamed up with or spend another 30 minutes trying to accomplish the [nearly] impossible on the RNG whim of the Mentor roulette.


I really don't see what pushes people towards such a White Knight-y attitude;
"As a Mentor you need to help everyone and everything, you need to be THE knight in shining armor whose patience and virtue is an idol for every new player on XIV - A Realm Reborn - Heavensward"

No, people like that simply need to get off their high horse already and look at things for what they are and how they're happening in reality.

Its not a white knight-y attitude, you are simply defeating the point of being a mentor in the first place.

You know, an individual who helps and teaches people because that was the intended point of it to begin with but everyone seems to forget this.

Its still a rotten attitude to have, call it realistic all you like its still rotten. Your attitude is way more jaded than simply being a realist, you're assuming the worst will happen so if anything you are being defeatist.

The whole mentorship system is flawed and sheer majority get it simply for the crown and don't give 2 cents to the players who would genuinely benefit from a proper mentor's advice.

Furthermore, we aren't on a damn high horse and you don't need to have the patience of a saint, you are simply refusing to give people a chance based on the content you end up in.

Seriously is giving people a chance such a foreign concept these days?

If they mess up and simply refuse to learn the tactics or don't spend like 3-5mins to watch a video of it before you begin, then of course leave and don't look back.

Well yeah, giving people a chance is a-okay.

But I doubt there's such a large difference between optimistic people that wait up a couple of wipes before leaving or people that are just so fed up and pessimistic that they decide to leave asap.

It's their own problem just as well as the people who decide to sit several hours in a Duty Finder queue for an extreme trial.
The most helpful thing you could do as a Mentor there is tell them to find a FC or give it a shot via unsynced Party Finder ~ Tomestone bonus groups.

^^^ this here is the problem, the moment you've entered and saw new players you instantly decided it was going to be a lost cause without even at least one attempt after explaining everything if people are still unsure even after reading up on it or watching a video. Thats the inherent problem.

If they fail as they just refused to follow your advice, well you did your best as a mentor but from that point its clearly not going to work so you shrug it off and leave.

Of course if you get players who don't even respond back to say they've acknowledged what you're saying then that of course is a red flag and if it leads to an instant wipe, then leave as that is a waste of time.

Or if they tell you to stfu then of course leave instantly there, cause that attitude from them means its already doomed to fail.

At least at this point you tried, it didn't work out so you leave that as your final message in the hopes that it might actually sink in.

I'm not even talking about myself but rather being able to understand the mindset people are in and what causes it.
It may be the wrong thing to do on a whim but not something to give them hell over.

Honestly I'll admit that I'm a bit jaded myself, more often than not in the duty finder I simply come across mentors who just don't give two shits about the community and are just completely neglecting the point of why they have that crown in the first place.

Yeah the potential bonuses from it are nice but they are supposed to be the incentive to drive people to at least try and help.

But when I see mentors who either give out bad advice or just refuse to even try or instantly leave a dungeon or trial then I'm just left there thinking. "Why do you even wear that crown if you're not gonna even attempt to display what it represents?"

The one's who openly admit they got it to have a shiny crown next to their name especially drive me up the wall and they should really have it permanently removed from them.

Eh... I'm probably too idealistic but *shrug* thats just me.

Sorry if I got a little heated with my responses there, the whole thing is just a sore topic for me.

I can definitely see where you're coming from.

It's true that you can Mentor in whichever way you're the most comfortable with, even teaching people not to blindly leave and give up due to the implications of their group can be something highly valueable.

All you can do is try your best if you're a Mentor yourself.
The Mentor roulette may remain something I only queue up for whenever I'm ready for it - since I feel like not queueing up for it at all is still better than quickly abandoning it if it's something you didn't want to deal with.

I reckon if SE didn't include EX trials it would be a much better experience for everyone overall.

EX related things I think should always be relegated to party finder and premade groups, but I doubt SE will ever change that now.

yep they didnt even try, nor explain, not attempted to run even once. they saw so many new...and left right there and then, with sarcastic comments and the like, it isns like people that were new hid that fact, they stated it clearly. We got a replacement with one Mentor in it,..She did a good job, explained and after a few death, to adjustment we made it ..and everybody was happy. I mean they were a couple of mentors not one. It is soo annoying, to see that happening is just beyond understanding. But is just me..is one of those occurrence that leave you Wonder why people play a game that is supposed to be a community game.

I totally agree with you there. Mentors cant run the content for the others but dam at least try a couple of times, out of 8 people of which half dont know it will take a few death to have it right. Besides if nobody helps those new people, and that is why Mentors were made, we only contribute to the downfall of the community as a whole and then have those long threads of people complaining how bad players are and the like

If people ask in extreme what they are supposed to do, I leave, simply because that is my expectation to them. If people want to get supported by Mentors, they have to work as well.

This is no one sided route, it goes in both directions. You may call me strict but I just reflect those high expectations back at them.

Mentors have a bad title atm because people expect them to wipe their asses and do their work for them.

I refuse that. If people have prepared, I will give it my all for extremes. If they were even too lazy to watch a short guide, then I am too lazy to waste my time.

It's that simple.
