Thank you for the update; I don't mind if it takes extra time if it means my WoL might return from the dead. We appreciate the effort that went into the update and the time being taken to make it a positive change for our characters.
Well, next week is going to be the test, if SE understands the wishes of a part of its players.
I've been saying all along that I intended to do a more thorough review of all my characters and I wanted to take the time to get all my notes in order, but after going through 40,000 screenshots of glamour + lore-noting looking for good comparison screenshots I am still not properly sorted....
So for now, some unformatted screenshots and notes.
GENERAL FEELINGS
Overall I feel like the appearance of every character has become harsher and less appealing. Details have become blurrier, messier, less defined while dark and unpleasant shadows have been emphasised. It doesn't feel more realistic, it has just ruined the stylised beauty that the characters previously had.
Recurring changes across multiple character designs include:
Darkened shadows and creases
Wrinkles under the eyes
Upper eyelid partly closed, perhaps intending to move from slightly anime proportions to more realistic
Strongly shaped lower eyelids that cast shadows
Eyelid rims becoming over-large
Pinched look to upper lips

(this used to be the "my character will look reliably stunning" shot)
In addition to the model changes, she has a shocking tendency to go puffy-faced in any degree of bright light. I don't know if this is an issue with the particular character model or with pale-skinned characters in general.
As covered in a previous bug report, the eye shape has changed:
- eyelids are lowered
- outer edge of eyelid rim is stretched
- eyelashes are at a different angle and no longer seen from a front view
- changed makeup
Additionally while collecting screenshots I have noticed that the shape of the eye is very different when closed, and in some lights can have a strange shadow on the inner corners, which can also be seen on NPCs. (e.g. Alphinaud in the cutscene for post-Shadowbringers MSQ "A Grand Adventure".)
Nose shape has changed - the original shape has quite a large tip that dips down over the nostrils and partly conceals them from a front view. For the updated graphics it seems the nostril bases have been stretched further down the face and are more visible.
As noted in a previous bug report (rejected as "working as intended", but surely this can't be right?) the upper lip has a pinched or puckered look and produces unnatural shadows in many lights.
The shadow below the lower lip used to be a sort of bow-tie shape giving definition to the chin; now it is more of a semicircle.
Chin and jaw shape has changed - Aurelie has quite a rounded jawline and pointed chin. The updated character is more of an even curve and the underside of the jaw has become smaller, altering the overall size of the face - it was a defining aspect of this face that it was relatively large compared to the others.
The hairstyle has something odd going on with the underside of the fringe/hairline - it's like it's semi-transparent and hovering.
The one stray strand along the edge of the hair framing the face is thinner than before and looks unnatural.
Additionally, in the Lodestone portrait only, the shadow cast by this hairstyle onto the face is incomplete.

(I think I may not have the same eyebrow type between thee pictures)
Overall harshness of shadows on the face
Increased shadow on lines over the eye, and wrinkles underneath
Eyelids are bigger
Eyelashes reduced and lines outside the outer corner of the eye have been lengthened so they still meet the eye.
Nose rounded off and thinner
Mouth is less broad
Increased blotchiness of skin - more not-green
Hair strands along hairline have become thinner; back of hair is structured oddly
HARU (Face 3 Raen Au Ra)
Despite the general perception of Au Ra as permanently grumpy-faced, they can actually be quite cute and have a nice smile. Or at least they did.

https://lds-img.finalfantasyxiv.com/...7be30c57e1.jpg
Shadow under eyebrow that will not budge in any amount of light - it did not previously behave like this.
Eyebrow angle is more slanted and angry looking, in addition to the shadow making it look even more angry
Eyelids wrap tightly around the eyeball instead of previously being quite flat
"swoop" of the upper eye makeup is quite different depending on angle (see Amaurot screenshot with constellation stone)
Eyelashes have increased and they disrupt the line of the eye makeup
Eye makeup has become smudged
light spot in makeup at outer corner of the eye
Eye surface is smaller
Mouth has downturned corners and has lost the upwards curve on the upper lip
Shadowing under the lower lip has changed (plus the lower lip is more distinctly coloured instead of skin-coloured) and now creates a pouting look rather than a softly rounded lip
Facepaint has shifted and colour has changed
Chin is either pointier or has the appearance of being so due to changed scale pattern on "beard"
Scales look dirty
SYLVIEL (Face 2 Duskwight Elezen)
My beautiful Duskwight has turned haggard and shadowy.

https://lds-img.finalfantasyxiv.com/...f76519de67.jpg
https://lds-img.finalfantasyxiv.com/...8d75679a45.jpg
General harshening of features
more pronounced eyelids and shadows both over and under the eye
Under-eye was previously quite flat and now has a strong crease at the base of the lower eyelid; in addition to generally changing the character's appearance, this has affected the downward line of the racial tattoo and gives it a sharp crease at that point.
Changed lip shape
Changed lines within ear shape
Jaw seems more rounded. Was already the most rounded shape.
Eyebrows are thicker and lower on the face
REJN (Face 3 Veena Viera)
https://lds-img.finalfantasyxiv.com/...d92057c287.jpg
https://lds-img.finalfantasyxiv.com/...e5d05a2561.jpg
Rejn came out of this relatively well*, but his "bunny nose' marking has gone from light to dark and the actual shape of the nose has changed as well. Shadows are generally darker as well.
May be something off with the over-eye "eyeshadow" facepaint, or else the eyelids have been shaded pinker by default.
* on second thoughts I'm revoking this. Something's off but I'm just having a harder time saying what is different. I haven't been playing him for as long as the others and have spent less time post-update trying to figure it out.
I think he may have the same "pinched face" issue I mentioned with Aurelie above - MSQ character Erenville is also a face 3 Viera and I noticed a few times that he had a similar strange cast of light and shadow on his face.
U'ZOLWE (Face 4 Sunseeker Miqo'te)
https://lds-img.finalfantasyxiv.com/...24eea6dfbb.jpg
https://lds-img.finalfantasyxiv.com/...79013b7fd3.jpg
Basic face structure looks different
Excessive shine on skin (not so much in this screenshot but very bad in general)
Possibly due to shine, face markings are less strongly contrasted with the skin colour
Eyebrow shape is different and changes the character's expression - loses all its intensity.
Underlying shape of the brow ridge does not line up with the actual eyebrows.
Wrinkles under the eyes
Skin shine creates a very sharp narrow line down the middle of the nose
Mouth shape has changed, giving more of a smile to what was previously a serious expression.
Makeup closer around the eyes, makes them look smaller
Hard to tell if the exact eye shape has changed, but I assume it has to some extent based on other Miqo'te characters.
Face markings may be on a different angle? And/or they extend further outwards and have an uptick at the lower point.
Hairstyle - small braids around the face are not well attached to the head. They also cast shadows, which I don't think they previously did.
ZI'ABA (Face 3 Sunseeker Miqo'te)
https://lds-img.finalfantasyxiv.com/...789b836694.jpg
https://lds-img.finalfantasyxiv.com/...554cec7ddf.jpg
As I previously wrote regarding G'raha, the eye structure for face 3 has changed, lowering the eyelid and shortening the eyelashes, then makeup added to the eyelid to conceal the altered shape. It's extremely disappointing. (Previously if I had to describe the character's features I would have told you he has beautiful thick eyelashes, because that's what the dark line below the original eyelid position looked like, even though that was an illusion once all this made me study the character designs more intensely. Now even the illusion is gone and he's left with half-closed eyes and ugly makeup.)
At a distance like this it looks convincing, but up close it doesn't look the same.
If we must keep this redesign, can we please at least have the makeup with a neat edge to it and not smudgy? But I would much rather have the proper eye shape back.
(I will be back later to expand notes and clean up formatting, or hopefully do some more in-depth individual posts. But at least I've got stuff written down for now.)
I think this gif of yours really goes to show how confusing some of the choices they made were. They specifically made face 4 M miqo'te have heavier eyeliner/eyelashes as well as bringing the upper lid down over the eye more, which is the exact opposite of what they did to F midlander face 1 where they took away a lot of the eyeliner/lashes and gave the eyes a much wider appearance.
As a fellow male Miqo'te face 4, yes, they absolutely ruined the eyes. My character looks stoned at all times now with the shadowed eyes and placid smile they slapped on him. My man looks like he's about to fall asleep. Fitting through the Dawntrail MSQ but certainly not on purpose.
Why is that shadow over the eyeball texture there? Why is it SO DARK? My character is supposed to have these striking orange eyes and now I can barely see them, let alone see the "cat eye" pupil shape with how heavy they made the shadows.
I wonder what happened to the people that posted early on in the thread when DT first launched. Have you guys gotten used to the changes or has the graphics update just demotivated you from logging in whatsoever?
I ask because it looks like a lot of people didn't fanta into something else despite their grievances. Not trying to antagonize or belittle anyone; disliking the update is totally valid. Just curious where you all stand 2 months later.

...but the biggest change is the eyes (settings: eye shape 4, small iris, color RGB: 147,157,89, eyebrow 1):
- DT brow is thinner, with hairs at a different angle
- DT lashes are thinner
- DT eyeliner on upper lid extends to the inner corner
- DT pupil is smaller
- DT iris is lighter, with greater contrast with the outer ring
- DT eye whites are more grey, with less contrast between the white and the iris (this alone helps account for much of the sense that the "light" has gone out of our characters' eyes)
- DT eye has darker shadow below the upper lid
- the inner corner of the DT eye is higher (note how the corner of the EW eye white lines up with the flesh corner, while the DT eye white does not)
- there's significantly more space between the DT eye and the brow

These changes may seem "minor", but the overall effect definitely changes my character into someone I don't recognize. They make her look bored/annoyed or "soulless", as many others have commented about their characters. There was no reason for the basic design and geometry of any of these facial features to change. I tried a few fanta tweaks, but nothing makes my character look the way she did. If I had the option to "turn off" the entire graphics update just to get my character back, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
Going to try to stop obsessing about this now. Thanks again to the devs for listening. My fingers are crossed.
In this thread, from what I've seen, it's a bit of everything. A lot of people have specifically mentioned taking a hiatus so they can quite literally no longer post, while others are still subscribed so that they can simply keep giving feedback and/or keep their house.
For me, personally, I'm just dealing with it because I still do love the game in spite of all my complaints, and have been coping for the past two months that they'll fix things up eventually. I'm also luckier because I'm mostly okay with my Elezen, but two months later her mouth line having an upwards, smile-like curve when it didn't before still bothers the hell out of me.
Several of my alts remain really difficult to look at, though, so I've just been doing as much on my main as possible and hoping they'll get fixed up (again, I'm not actually expecting things to be 100% the same, but I want the options I picked pre-DT to still resemble those options) by the time I "run out" of things to do on her, lol.
A lot of people in this thread specifically didn't fantasia because they're roleplayers or writers of some kind, and so what their character is and how they look are very important to them--myself included. Changing a character I've had for years to an entirely different race or even face, admittedly, just makes them no longer that character to me...and, well, to be plain, it's depressing to lose them, you know?
That's why some of the face/option changes being so drastic hurt, because there's really no equivalent to what you had before that you can switch to with a fantasia. That's why a lot of us are simply dealing with the face changes; it's still technically the closest option, even if we think it looks too different from before. Sorry, I hope that made sense.
I have not gotten use to the changes at all and it does keep me from logging in and playing. I log in to raid with my static because that is a social commitment with friends that I agreed to, and then I log out. I keep my camera zoomed out and don't look at my character very closely because he looks wrong. I could fanta, yes, but I like my catboy. He's based on a character I love from Fire Emblem, so I don't want to change him into something different.
I've logged in on my Au Ra female (face 3) alt a few times, but she made it out of the graphics "update" even worse than my catboy, and it genuinely depresses me to look at her. She is a character that is very close to my heart who I have commissioned artwork of and has a whole detailed background and story. The face and the features I chose when I created her influenced what kind of person I decided she should be. To change her face is to change who she is.
Still playing, while also waiting and hoping adjustments will be made. Not in any rush though.
My own personal preferences for adjustments for my character are a lot less than others I've seen: some bugs to be fixed, lighting/shading on characters to be adjusted in general, but most of all, for my eyebrows to be softened again. I've held off on gposing for now though.
Have not gotten used to the changes, still hate em, unfortunately paid up till Nov, so really all I've been doing is pvp (but not shatter days, don't bother logging). Won't ever "get used to" the changes either, how do I know? Cause I'm STILL bitter about the butchery Blizzard did to my WoW chars years later.
As I posted earlier, I think there have been alterations to some extent on all the male Miqo'te eye shapes and it's easier to see what's going on with a big-eyed face like #3. The eye shape and structure have totally changed and it makes the eye extra-shadowed by the veiling eyelashes and the shadow cast by the eyelid instead of both those things being higher up and out of the way.
It's harder to see changes to the eyes on my face 4 Miqo'te – I'm not sure if his dark skin colour makes it harder to see the difference or if his particular eye shape is less affected by the changes.
I think the alterations to the face 4 eyebrow shape are having as much or more effect on the character's changed mood as the shouldn't-be-there smile. I think the underlying face structure is bending them into a less severe shape, in addition to being thinner than before.
My characters are specific characters with names and identities; Fantasia is not an option unless it can magically take them back to their original appearances.
I have definitely not gotten used to the changes. Sometimes the character can still look good but they're still not right and the redone graphics are prone to making them look extremely uncanny, whether it's turning into a puffy-faced nightmare in bright sunlight or having a smile that looks unnatural when I used to love how they looked when smiling.
The game had a lovely style of character design and they've thrown it away for something inferior. It needs so much more polishing to bring it back to the previous level of presentation, whether they keep the new style or try to go back to the old one.
I appreciate you asking in a non-hostile way. Everyone has their own opinion and that's totally fine whether it's for or against the changes! For me personally it hasn't stopped me from playing the game completely but it absolutely has impacted how much I've been able to enjoy the expansion. Even two months in I still have way less motivation to do things like gpose, which means that I'm less likely to stay subbed during a content lull.
As many others have stated using a fantasia isn't really an option for me because any character that I make I have a pretty specific idea in mind for, so changing to something else entirely just really isn't something I'd bother doing. I'd probably just stop playing the character at that rate.
I've honestly just been raidlogging since I already agreed to raid with several groups this tier and I didn't want to let them down... Just logging in frequently enough to do roulettes for tomes has been a struggle, I'm seriously considering finishing up this tier and unsubbing, but... I know at least one of those groups (and possibly two) are expecting me to do the new ultimate with them. I don't really see myself enjoying it much, though.
For me it's not just the graphical changes, I main(ed) black mage and the changes to it (and the fight design) make it incredibly unpleasant to play. I'm not hating raiding on other classes, but I'm always thinking "I miss black mage", except. old black mage. Picto is fun and cute and I certainly don't dislike it, but it feels like an alt class to me.
The graphics are kinda the same, now I'm done with MSQ and not having cutscenes that zoom in on the face thrown at me every 20 seconds. I can sit though a raid session or do some gathering and it almost starts to feel like the same old game... and then I turn the camera around or see my portrait and I cringe.
I didn't fantasia because my character is an intrinsic part of this game to me; it's her story, her world. Starting over with a new character would feel like starting to play a new game I have no attachment to (though, I suppose I'm already experiencing that). She's a muse to me - I would be wasting years worth of art, stories and screenshots if I were to start fresh.
I don't think I can adequately express how rough the past two months have been for me without divulging that I'm autistic and this game is (well... perhaps was) my special interest, and perhaps the stereotypical dislike of change has something to do with my refusal to fantasia. I used to play daily for hours, delving into any and every piece of content I could, racking up hundreds of days of playtime without ever getting burned out in the slightest. And now? It's not the game I fell in love with, that I devoted years to. Now, on days I don't have raid? I don't even log on. And raid days I'm on for the duration of raid and nothing more, no dailies, weeklies or achievement hunting. I haven't found anything to fill the void and occupy the extra time I have on my hands now either, so I have plenty of time to ruminate on why it feels so wrong.
Suffice to say... If I could 'vote with my wallet' without causing problems for my friends, I definitely would.
I couldn't play and stopped paying a sub for about a month, I guess (I don't remember), but then I sat and thought: I pre-purchased DT, I paid for it, and I didn't want to refund DT because of sentimental reasons (I've been playing FFXIV for about a decade; it's not that kind of ties that are easy to break), so I might as well create a brand new character. And if my main isn't fixed when I get to the end of DT, well, that will be the time to make a decision.
I'm not afraid of quitting a game because of character changes; I left WoW after 7 years and Destiny II when they changed my character's face and voice (the character remodelling wasn't the sole reason, but it was one of the major ones). I never logged back since then.
Still devastated, honestly.
I fantasia'd to femhroth. I like my femhroth enough to the point that if they ever fix the completely destroyed hellsguard racial traits and the butchering of femroe as a whole to be 'Bigger Highlander Hyur' with the rounding of their features I will make one of my alts my femhroth permanently.
I have an FC to maintain and a personal house so I'm ransomed into a sub that way and paid for 6 months anyway so couldn't vote with my wallet. I'm still logging in but it's nowhere near as much as I used to. It's a relief to not be in the MSQ honestly because I don't have to see so many cutscenes without the character I was expecting to be playing for the expac.
What was really upsetting recently was doing Moonfire. Moonfire would've been my 10th anniversary with my character. Ten whole years! I've written thousands of words and drawn art of her for ten years, and woven stories with my friends in the world of XIV for that long with the same character for a decade. Doing it with a fantasia'd character that I've cobbled a backstory for but still using her name absolutely sucked and I actually don't want to even do the Rising on her because of how much it stung.
So yeah. 2 months in and I absolutely hate the update still. My 2nd major character I've played who I've had for about 4 years is also a femroe and while I haven't fantasia'd her I now play her fully masked because she looks like she's had plastic surgery for how big the changes to her features have been.
Edit now I'm not at work:
I miss them both tremendously...

Sko actually had warmth and now seems like a stranger. Wyta's aloofness was so charming now she's just... a glamoured up doll.
This absolutely hits home and hurts. I'm so sorry. I know it's not much but you're not alone in how that feels at all.
Very demotivated. I still haven't done Dawntrail yet. I don't even know how I got to level 91 because I've barely played. If I hadn't won the housing lotto on the day I was going to quit I wouldn't have played at all in the last two months. I used a fantasia for the first time in my 6 years of playing. I knew it was useless just picking different features because the CC is so so limited, so I tried a different race. A friend suggest I became an Au'ra with her. I wanted to at least give it a try instead of just feeling hopeless. My Au'ra is cute, but she's not my character and the motivation still isn't there. I remember spending so much time getting screenshots of my character before Dawntrail because I had a feeling I was never going to see her again.
If the adjustments we got between the benchmark and the full game are any indication of what's to come, I have a feeling my original look is never coming back. I want to be hopeful, but it's hard to. I have to decide what I'm going to do. If I'm going to give up my house I finally won after 6 years and stop playing? It's tough.

I wanted to enjoy the next chapter of my characters life. Look at her. She didn't need to change. Updated textures would have been plenty. She was already beautiful. This game has meant a lot to me. I genuinely miss my character deeply.
Since the devs are reading this thread and I've seen the "soulless eyes" feedback pop up again recently, I'd like to say that I strongly disagree with that feedback (which is not to say you shouldn't post it if you agree with that feedback) and I'd wager a lot of people who are pleased with the update and not posting here would say the same.
To me the pre-7.0 eyes are what look soulless by a mile. They look completely vacant and flat, like a lifeless mannequin with a thousand yard stare. One of the best parts of the graphical update has been the massive amount of life that's been breathed into the characters through the eye updates. They have detail, depth, proper shading and lighting, and I love the subtle eye movement that was added as well. I would be very sad to see them go back to the O_O look they were before, so I hope this feedback can be taken into account with whatever path the devs choose to take. Thanks.
I think there was an issue with "soulless eyes" back in the first benchmark, but it was related to how the lighting was interacting with the iris. It looks perfectly fine now. Doubly so in-game because the eyes actually move around quite a lot too.
Show us the picture in the same or similar lighting, please. Otherwise it's kind of a moot comparison. Also you're showing one picture with reshade and one without.
I am happy with some of the update but not some parts. I find the cat eyes look like they have a film over them? I also feel as I have said before they have made midlander females noses and mouths look angry on face 1 and 2. I have managed to make a Hyur I like but do not love, and I have been switching between her and cat.
It takes me back to 1.0 they took away our voices and changed them (Not sure why) but it was not a improvement.
My 1.0 cat did not look great coming to ARR so I switched to a diff face played her for years then discovered I enjoyed being a Midlander so played her the last few years and now I am back having a identity crisis lol. I will add every skin seems to have a horrible beige undertone and also lip colours are dull and beige like.
Thicker eyeliner is a facial feature setting for Face 4 that the character in question doesn't appear to be using in the Endwalker screenshot.
Here's a comparison of my character, for clarity:
https://i.imgur.com/uVnqQ1S.png
I agree with Aurumis's conclusion, but to your point, the eyeliner 'facial feature' was not made thicker -- though it was certainly altered in other ways. At least on the eye option I'm using, I appreciate that the additional eyeliner's lumpiness was smoothed (for the most part lol), but that's about all I can say for it.
You can also see the way his profile's been changed in these comparison shots I took previously:
https://i.imgur.com/Ufse7Om.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/WDukMhy.png
(The annotations are about the shape of the nose and lips. The upper lip, in particular, is now pressed flatter against the face in DT, making it unusually uneven with the lower lip, unlike the previous model. The shape of the nose has lost the feline sleekness it had previously as well.)
And gods, I miss my thicker eyebrows (which is also a facial feature option my character's using in all screenshots).
He is using the thick eyelashes in the old screenshoot one too, it's something I choosed because it made the eye look more feline. But even so, now in DT they changed too much the form of the eyes and how much they closed the eyelids and painted over the iris is still there, obscuring even the SHINE in DT, that little white bubble of shine that only appears when they open the eyes in cutscenes or looking from the character from under. I also had the thicker eyebrows that now are nonexistent no matter if you choose the option or not. It's all a mess. I'm so angry. I don't get how some answers say this is better, they are BLIND.
Also agree on the mouth and nose too (apart that as you can see in endwalker they didn't have that corners up and they added it and looks horrible when you do some emotes, in some cutscenes my miqo'te looked distorted as fuck when smiling sly and challenging and such). But if they fix the eyes, I would be happy...since it's the worst change and the one that make them look dead... Also the color of the iris obscured for no reason too, and the pupil...
Well, until we get an official reply, I think it might be useful to post some feedback yet again (I bet you all got tired of me, haha). This time I want to talk about my Elezen girl.

EW and DT comparison:
Changes:
1. Eyes feel off, maybe because the iris became darker (it can be corrected) or maybe the eye lost its slight squint towards the end. Instead of a mature, intense stare, I've got a young girl with wide-opened eyes. It's not a bad thing per se, and I think I can correct it by putting on some face paint and changing the iris colour.
2. Light eyebrows lost their dark undertone, which helped to make them more prominent. I've already written about this issue.
The eyebrows changed their position, but it can be corrected by choosing another type.
3. What has happened to the poor girl's mouth? Has she been stung by a bee? Why did her mouth all of a sudden get plumpier, and why is the lower lip so thick?
4. Lip gloss. I'd rather have the matte option, please; if I wanted to apply lip gloss, I'd put some colour on her mouth.
5. Cheekbones. The shape of the face has changed; it became more narrow and cheekbones less prominent.
Overall conclusion: not bad. It's not a win in the graphical upgrade lottery, but not a loss either (if the mouth and cheekbones return to their original shape).

Look at this photo of Alphinaud and Alisaie. They are twins. They have the same face, except for very small changes in eyes and mouth. And these "few pixels" help to tell one twin from another unmistakably, even if they are dressed in the same clothes.
Sorry, I was referring to the GIF they quoted where it seems to be missing in the EW bit. (I probably should've linked to that directly in my response for clarity, but I thought it would be more valuable to link your whole post, since it brings up many points I agree with.)
Agreed on all counts. During emotes that furrow the brow, the ends of his eyebrows turn up more than they did previously and it looks so strange lol. Sadly, I don't have any 6.x screenshots of what it used to look like (it's probably possible with the old EW benchmark I use, but male miqo'te are so animated that it's difficult to get a good mid-emote screenshot without being able to pause like we can with gpose), but it's something I noticed immediately. The eyes, in general, are so frustrating as well because the slit pupil is so obscured in most lighting now that you can forget they have them, not helped by the males' smaller eyes, compared to their female counterparts.
I pushed myself to clear the MSQ so I could keep myself busy, but since clearing it and getting a few jobs to 100, I've only been logging in for my retainers and to keep my estate. The game has felt empty and pointless ever since the character update, I feel a consistent apathy towards all new content (especially if it involves cutscenes).
I originally intended to cover all of my glamours in a mask but I got fed up with how bare my character's head looked from the back while fighting so I stopped bothering to do it outside of crafters/gatherers.
Each time I see my character in a cutscene without a mask on, I immediately mentally sigh and just feel so depressed. Even with time passing, I can't accept how they changed the face. The way the eyes and lips look continue to stick out to me, they still feel very gross to look at.
I could also go on about the changes to scales, the skin and the other things but it isn't going to contribute anything new as I've already stated my thoughts in many posts before. I basically can't unsee what I saw since Benchmark 1.
I haven't used Fantasia because I can't do anything about what was changed. My character means a lot to me and the way she appeared in Endwalker was perfect. Sometimes I launch the Endwalker Benchmark to feel some normality again.
I couldn't help but feel so seen in your post.
Everything you wrote accurately describes how I've been feeling.
I also would like to talk about facial expressions. I used to play a male Au Ra, so all the examples are going to be illustrated with the generous help of my Test Subjects from 1 to 4 (except for the 2nd, because it still pains me to see what has become of the 2nd face). All mouths belong to the 1st type.
The main issue is smiles. They are not that good across most races I've seen during MSQ up to Stormblood. Just look at this lovely fellow and his charming smile:
(NIN 60-70 questline spoilers)
This picture vividly represents what's wrong with smiles: only the corners of the mouth are pulled up, the middle part is unaffected in any way, and it looks very unnatural and just plain weird.
A few examples of smiling expressions of male Au Ra are listed below.
1st face
The first face won the lottery; its smile looks almost normal.

As you can see, the same general problem is present here, even if to a lesser degree.

It seems like the poor guy with the 3d face didn't get the care and attention he deserves.

Once again, the thin corners of the mouth are pulled up, and it looks not that good; also, the eyes turned into very narrow slits. Other "smiling" face expressions have the same problems, and, to be honest, some of them are just plain scary.

I was curious how SE animated non-standard wide mouth, and I wasn't disappointed!

Maybe it's just the first-mouth type? Maybe a smaller mouth will look more natural? Not a chance!

It looks so much better.
Still dislike it , outright hate some parts. I don't really care for the character the same way I used to at all and in turn made me care about the game even less. At any point if I dared think, hm maybe its not that bad , I'd see myself do a jank face animation in a cutscene or look at a screenshot of the old version and am like , yeah nvm the new look is still terrible. I just really can't get over my miqo's face looking like its made out of plasticine and the eyes make me look stoned 24/7 when in the past they were bright and engaging. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
So yeah the feelings I had toward it even from the previews before the benchmark ,which really solidified with the benchmark release , have not really changed - genuinely despise the new look.
Used to be more engaged in the conversation about it too but honestly seeing how they didn't even care to properly address mixed feelings toward this update for months and we have the miniscule amount of attention from just a mod post in a forum thread my good will towards anything they might do is non-existent. Especially after reading the recent Yoship interview of him addressing feedback toward the expansion as a whole. The underwhelming mixed bag DT brought along with this graphical update ended up pushing majority of the friends I had on the game away from it and basically agree we're never pre-ordering anything and might just straight up quit haha. Really the only reason I'm a bit torn on ending my sub is because I've owned a house on the game for 6 years and have become attached to it because of sentimental value and memories and only resub on a house demo timer... Heavily considering ending that soon tho. :/
Still haven't gotten used to the changes to my Face 4 Fem Au Ra at all, and at this point I feel like I am not going to. I've tried different hairstyles, makeup, and even messed around in character creation to see if I could try to replicate a close look. A fantasia isn't going to fix a complete style shift.
I've heard some have said Face 4 Au Ra looks cuter now, but I don't want to look cuter, I want to look the same way I did before. It really does feel like there was some misguided attempt at making characters look more "conventionally" attractive and/or younger. But I didn't make my character based on attractiveness, I enjoyed the sharp-looking style of the face- that has now been rounded off and deprived of its identity. Not to mention how the jaw, eyes, and mouth of the face look nothing like it used to. The idea that a fantasia could/would ever have fixed a complete style like this is at best a poor joke and at worst, an insult. I wanted my character to look the same, just upscaled. I did not want what feels like a random mishmash of traits added onto the face that they were hoping would stick with players.
It's a shame we cannot fully turn off DLSS/FSR.
So for now I have settled with FSR and 99%res scale which for some bizarre reason gives the most sharpest image out of all options. (I've injected extra sharpness trough the Nvidia control panel for FFXIV which helps to mitigate it some more).
I don't know what it is with the implementation CBUIII uses but it's the same on FFXVI demo, the same blurriness & softening.
Funny thing is with the FFXVI demo few hours after it came out some in the community already made a mod to fix it.
Anyhow there's not been a single word about any of this from SE side and I'm guessing they just won't do anything about it and we'll just have to stick it up.
This, times 1000. If I could boil this entire thread down to a single bug report, it's this:
Steps:
- create a character with the following characterstics (race, gender, face, etc.)
- compare the results between Endwalker and Dawntrail
Expected Results:
- the DT character looks like a higher-resolution version of the EW character
Actual Results:
- the DT character looks similar to the EW character but with clear design differences between the [brows/jaw/mouth/eyes/chin/cheeks/etc.]
I understand that there isn't an easy fix, especially now that many new players have created characters that they must be happy with using the updated facial features. But I'll say it again: if I could turn off the entire graphics update just to get my character back, I'd do it.
And the last post for today. This is a character update done right. This is the same face structurally and fundamentally; the only changes are the loss of frowned brow texture (maybe because of lighting) and eyes (pupils moved up and are almost covered with the upper eyelid; it's a common issue with male Au Ra eyes).
It's amazing that the least popular Au Ra face got the best treatment. I want to thank whoever was working on it. You did a great job.
P.S. I'm tired. I spent way too much time posting all this crap.
Same, if I could get the old graphics back for my character? Hell yeah give me back the pixelated hair or the poligons, I don't care. I want my miqo to look how he is supossed to be. Not what they did. I just want them to give me back the old features, it's not so much to ask. The people who like the new ones keep it but give me back MINE, let me CHOOSE at least. I just want my WOL to look like before... I don't even have motivations to do gpose or anything, for what I would do photos or screenshoots anymore? he is not him, at all
I'm so tired of this shit. If they don't fix the models I'm going to drop the game after my sub ends... sadly I subscribed for 3 months but once is gone if my character is not the same... well. No more of my money to them.
The reason for that is: FF14 is using FSR1, and FSR1 has buildin sharpening. With 99% resolution scale you almost don't get the disadvantange of running in lower resolution, but you still get the "advantage" of the sharpening filter. It's a bad way to apply shaperning though, if you want to increase sharpening you are better off setting resolution scale to 100% (which disables FSR) and increase sharpening through some other means.
Still sad about the changes, just not active here anymore because I'm not very hopeful in any change coming, or if they come, they'll be very minor tweaking. I hope i'm wrong tho.
I was an avid gposer before, and I'm not motivated to it anymore. Maybe it'll come back after a while when the acceptance stage of grief is settled. But for now I'm still missing how my char was looking before (except for the scales and horn, they're gorgeous now).
100% agreement. I have the same disaster with my female Au Ra (face 4 mouth 3) which I have already explained in countless posts. The face was softened to make it look cuter.... For whatever reason? The free Fantasia is useless for me, there is no face which I like. And I don't accept that after 4 years I have to play with a completely different character. Since DT, my Au Ra has been wearing a mask so I don't have to look at this shame. If something doesn't happen, I'll have to think about whether I want to continue my subscription.
