@Naoki Yoshida-> Make Samurai a Tank class!

Dodge tank seems like it could be completely worthless or completely OP. I mean at the mercy of RNG to dodge but then the option to outright dodge a move would mean tankbusters would never hit, unless that was their version of Hallowed/Holmgang/Living Dead, but still, don't think I like the idea myself.

Not quite, AST gets it's name and LB3 from Astrologer in FF Tactics. It borrows some of the time elements from Time mage and AST's core gimmick, the cards, come straight from Gambler. After that its just a mixing of WHM and SCH to sorta create this giant melting pot of a Job know simply as AST.

I don't know if Mitsurugi is the best choice for a tank SAM T-shirt reveal. Mitsu has been slowly ditching his armor over the games, hell SC 5, he isn't even wearing armor! He's become this weird Samurai monk thing.

This is because his sword has a reversed edge o3o What would normally be the cutting edge is actually blunt and the backside is the sharp edge. Kenshin doesn't do much damage or cut people cause he doesn't want to kill people anymore, cause remember...HE WAS A HITOKIRI! and he hates himself for that. So, no. Kenshin is a TERRIBLE choice for a t-shirt tease if they were gonna do tank SAM.

Anyways, Lambdafish brings up a solid point, if they are doing SAM for this expansion. It's probably too late to change anything, so we shall have to wait until tomorrow or EU fanfest and see.

I don't think the t-shirt has ever represented the jobs role, it's also usually vague so I doubt it will be a character with too much of a samurai aesthetic (I really cant think of a vague way to announce SAM though). But I might be wrong, we'll see tomorrow! Might not even be SAM! DX.

I also think its fun to discuss though, even if the OP was asking for it to be a tank, I think the point of the OP was more to just express his/her opinion, I'm sure they know it cant be changed suddenly because of 1 request on the forums. I'm sure the debating will heat up tomorrow night too when RDM is announced its role! :D

I also get the fun in discussion about things like this but...maaaaan, this thread got heated at times and I will own up that I was a part of that. Also lets hope the T-Shirts don't follow an order, cause Batman was first and gave us tank DRK. So with Scarlet Witch being first...oh the RDM fans would throw such a fit.

I haven't seen the anime of Rurouni Kenshin, but I truly loved the live action movies (there were three parts). I think making the samurai a Dodge tank will make dodging useful. For example at the moment nobody uses the mnk dodging feather move because RNG. But what if it will be combined with samurai dodging skills? I think it's something to think about. Perhaps make parry a useful stat vs auto attacks, and dodging skill abilities vs magical attacks?
@Kat, maybe samurai should be like the masked man from Naruto: Madara dodging skills XD! But yes I made this thread so Naoki Yoshida gets a few ideas of what to add or change and stormsblood is still a half year. I know he will get a translation of this thread with the input of players because he genuinely cares about what we want as he mentioned this a few times in interviews! ^o^\

The live action films are good but condense stuff. As for the dodge tank idea, I think an evasion ability works fine for DPS and Healers, but the tank should not be at the whim of RNGsus. He will smite you without hesitation. The other problem is that if you gave a dodge tank abilities to increase their evasion even further, you run into serious OP territory, like Tank NIN from XI. Dodge tanks are a very tricky thing. If you just give them a couple abilities to up their evasion, they remain at the whim of RNG, but if you gave them almost complete control over their evasion like NIN tank had, then everything becomes trivial to you and the role becomes boring. Now, if you tweak the idea to be a counterattack tank, there might be something there.

Whenever you parry or dodge, you get a certain set of skills that go active and allow you to dish out hefty punishment in return for the enemies failure to hit you. That there is an idea, MNK sorta has this...though it doesn't do much if anything these days...poor haymaker. So much potential...yet all of it squandered.

Far more likely EU because... WE GET TO SEE RED MAGE THIS WEEKEND!!!! *hype*

I truly feel we may get full reveals for both RDM and SAM and a tease for the third(if there is a third) for EU. We got two at JP fanfest last time, so I don't see why this one should be any different. Even though we had U.S, EU, JP, events DRK was only teased at Vegas. 007 shirt tease in London, and AST then MCH full reveals in Tokyo. All in all i'm expecting a lot of news this weekend.

I have kind of felt this way about it since we were told DRK and SAM were both considered for TANK in HW. Why throw away assets, time and resources (from an already as of then overworked staff), would it not be more intelligent to simply re-purpose all of that work for later use? From my limited imagination the idea of Drawout(FFT) abilities being suitably different from Dark Arts would be a non issue. To say nothing of the use between a Greatsword+ Darkness magic, compared to Sword Arts used by a Samurai.

If we use the mock up of Samurai from FFT:

Samurai are well armed and armoured. They have effective abilities that effect large radii of enemies or allies, and their attacks can discriminate between enemy and ally. Their Draw Out action ability set is a great secondary set for magic-users, as their effectiveness depend on MA. They can hold a sword with two hands, making them very powerful. It should be noted that each Draw Out ability could potentially destroy the katana being drawn out, so a good inventory of extra katanas should be held.

Asura- The slashing of an invisible blade causes damage to enemy units.
Quote: "Legendary sword that kills freely! Asura!"

Koutetsu- The wailing of a ghost causes damage to the enemy.
Quote: "Evil souls of the dark, gather here...Koutetsu!"

Bizen Boat
The whisper of the Katana's spirit causes MP damage to the enemy.
Quote: "Nihilistic sky, inhale magic power...Bizen Boat!"

Murasame- The tears of the Katana's spirit restores HP of allied units.
Quote: "No more loss of precious life...Murasame!"

Heaven's Cloud- MagicKatana attack causing damage to enemy. Adds: slow.
Quote: "Yagumo rising, all who know God! Heaven's Cloud!"

Kiyomori- Spirit in the Katana protects allied units, reducing physical and magic damage. Adds: Protect, Shell.
Quote: "Innocent sword, slash evils and protect! Kiyomori!"

Muramasa- Ghost from the Katana make the enemy act unpredictablity and in some cases sentences them to death. Adds: Confusion, Death Sentence.
Quote: "Summon all ghosts of the sword! Attack! Muramasa!"

Kikuichimoji- Vengeful spirit makes a beeline toward the enemy
Quote: "Brave weapon, turn to a deadly blaze! Kikuichimoji!"

Masamune- Katana spirit gradually restores ally's HP and increases speed. Sword for attack must be stolen from Elmdor. Adds: Regen, Haste
Quote: "Sword of fury, inject power! Masamune!"

Chirijiraden- Powerful Katana attack that causes a blue flame to attack enemy units. Swords for attack must be found in Deep Dungeon.
Quote: "Flame-eating sword, swipe away the evils! Chirijiraden!"

With very few changes i could see this being a fairly unique and fun aspect for SAM in FFXIV. I want SAM as a TANK, Conversely the idea of it being a hybrid has merit. My only complaint of a DPS/ TANK hybrid is that more often than not you get the DPS role played almost exclusively while the same person will try to gear up their TANK for glamour purposes. While certain precautions can be and often are in place to combat this, it does happen.
