I agree with spiritbond name change...in most MMOs its actially used to define gear that become rare/EX after you equip it so its a "bad" name.
Maybe a name related to the actual materia concept, like "Memory Bond" or just something simple like "materia rank"...this way when thw materia rank reaches its cap you can turn the gear into materia.

* Not sure if this was answered elsewhere, but I'm guessing Main Hand / Secondary Tools for Disciples of the Hand and Land won't be able to be Materia-ized / Attach Materia to?
As for turning Rare/EX Gear into Materia (you said you were "looking into it"), I guess it depends on how you and Matsui-san want to balance the game? I thought it was stated earlier that Crafted Items w/ Materia would eventually be greater than NM (Rare/EX) Drops?
If that's your premise then focus on that. Or else, Rare/EX Materia Attached Items are just 1 more in a long line of items that can all be Materia'ized and attached to. -

Thanks for the translation on that post. Per Reinheart's posts I think the issue with the name was only on the JP side, so we dont need to worry about Spirit Bond in NA. -

I agree that Spirit Bond name should be changed into something more suitable. Usually someone who becomes attached to their weapon or armor would call it their prized possession and have it held in high esteem. That would be in the form of an adjective but in a noun a similar word would be idol or even in some situations paramour. Usually especially when a piece of gear receives a name a prime and popular example is if you have played Dragon Age 2 the dwarf Varric has a crossbow named Bianca which he coddles and speaks to occasionally treating it as he would a woman.
I assume the "Spirit Bond" is of the same meaning as the above example and would be best if you found a word that describes this bond better. As I said perhaps Idol or something along those lines would be the most fitting name over Spirit Bond. Or you could go with a far simpler idea and just call it attachment level. Once the attachment level hits cap you can then turn it into an attachment to go into another piece of gear. -
