Ok let me preface by saying I totally don't mind when a healer feels uncomfortable DPSing because they thing they can't do both. But what about all these WHM, that are usually mentors like the one just now, that couldn't be assed to even just Aero a boss. Like it bothers me deep inside. This is just Qarn Normal. Not even just casting an INSTANT DOT. I'm sorry it's just like so many times I get a healer in an easy dungeon and they just stand there.

Majority of mentors are just there for the free bonuses.They generally play worse than non mentors and they tend to leave instances on tank or healer on load if they dont like what they got dragged into.
Mentor status means nothing like it always has.

Speaking of mentors.I had a raid recently in Weeping City.it was pointed out early one that a player was deliberatly getting themselves locked out of every fight.
They joined in for Ozma after being called out on it.
Then on last boss guess who locked themselves out again of the fight.Same person.
Turns out they were a mentor.

Mentors are just players who happen to have 1 healer, 1 tank and 1 DPS at level 70, nothing more.

Some of us try to be more, but I've seen way too many people who barely know the basics talking s*** in duty, or even worse, playing like they've been lobotomized. Sometimes I get a little weary of Mentor Roulette after getting a synced EX primal that gets vote abandoned 5 times in a row, but that's when I take the crown off and do some solo leveling stuff. Some people should never wear it to begin with.

What I mean is, mentors are just players, who happen to have a few job to 70. And that's it. I am a "mentor" myself, it didn't change me at all. I spend time to help people, point out bad habits and strive to improve as I always did. The mentor status doesn't change anything. Actually, I believe it makes things worse, because of the "you're a mentor so you must be perfect" mentality, creating more frustration for newer players.

Truer words have never been spoken about mentor status.

I only run Mentor Roulette when I'm feeling like the night has been good for parties. If parties have been...well, lets just say "lacking" to be nice....then I avoid it. But if I get good parties for most of what I did that night, then yeah I will join and help out to the best of my abilities(and admit when I fail to remember/know the fight well enough to guide)

I think I'mma keep tanking. War is feeling really good now that I can use the rage bar. And why does it feel so good? my last party in longstop I just had.. were silent but awesome. 73 left on the timer, left with 3 comms, and had the biggest pulls I ever done there. To the healer I had. You were the true hero in a world of no more heroes. Seriously I would've died like sonic in spikes if she wasn't kicking ass. And you let me practice pulling stupid large. I didn't think that would be fun. I used to hate mass pulling.. but talk about turning a new leaf.
Edit. Yes I'm STILL listening to Kill or be killed from No more heroes 2. Repeat is a wonderful feature.

Did the requirements get cut back since the Mentor system was launched?

At launch, in addition to the above, a Mentor needed to have completed 1,000 instanced battles, and have 300 comms.

Also, it's not 70. It's 60.

If people are going to criticize something they should at least use the right information.

So, last night, I was doing 50/60 roulette, to try and get some XP for my WAR. We get The Wanderer's Palace. I get told "Go pull everything you can", so I start going crazy big (think I did a hexa pull at the start!). This healer is literally on fire, despite me being lacking in the cooldown management department. They poked some fun such as saying "This could be a book, The Bizarre Adventures of Nomfur!" etc, but were a great group. We beat it (synced) in like 12 minutes. What. A. Group. I felt exhilirated after that.

The requirements are still the same.
But 300 Comms are not that hard to get while leveling tank/heal and for the 1k instances even unsynced counts towards this.
Not to mention the crafter way.
So yeah, a mentor at least only needs 1 lvl60 job + crafting and gathering collectables or have at least 1 of each, tank healer and dps, at 60 + 300 Comms + 1k instances, even unsynced.
Please correct me if I got something wrong.

Right, I forgot the other requirements and thanks for correcting me. But that wasn't my point, nor did I want to criticize mentors.



What I meant was : just take mentors for what they are -> people who completed a relatively easy check list, and by no mean a certain group of people that have anything in common besides this. Mentors don't become dicks just because they got the little crown above their head. A bit like how people don't suddenly become bullies because they installed ACT, but that's another debate ^^

Ah, I see. Sorry then. I see quite a bit of Mentor shade thrown around at times so... My bad. :P

Is it wrong to just request that people say something when they need to AFK or brb in a duty? I mean isn't that the considerate and courteous thing to do?

Had a run just recently where one of the DPS kept going AFK after pulls or even while we were fighting trash and bosses for the whole dungeon pretty much, asked them to stop doing so with zero reply. I don't know why they kept AFKing and not you know...doing DPS to help the group since they said nothing, but whatever I said my peace and requested politely they stop doing so.

Get to the last boss and during the fight.....they AFK for about 5 minutes during the fight from around 40% to 4%. Said nothing just poof AFK with the healer keeping them alive healing them from them not dodging.

Comes back at 4% says "Sorry, my mom needed help with something"

Why did you not have 0.3 seconds to type "AFK sorry" or "BRB sorry"???

Is it too much to ask just to let your group know? I mean barring severe emergencies....helping your mom with something and you're back in 5 mins isn't like your house is on fire yeah? Just say something to the rest of your party? I don't get it.

I am quite sure the healer was butt buddies with the DPS in question so that would be why they wasted energy on them...although I have to say if it was my friend and I was on healer I would let them die anyway too lol

Yes and no.You have to go to an NPC to request to become a mentor.You dont just automatically get the status.The mentor system was brought in to get experienced players to help new players with old content through mentor roulette with the incentive of some extra tomes.

I dont know if you were around when the mentor system was originally released but a lot of people only used the novice network for fc recruitment but never gave advice.It was also plagued by bots.
If you dont want to act like a mentor then you switch the crown off instead of giving the rest of them a bad rep.

Since when? I never had to go to any NPC to get the status that I recall. And I've been mentor since partway through Heavensward.

I believe you need to go to the same NPC that introduces hall of the novice. The one I went to was by the innkeeper in Gridania.

You forgot it about it then - in order to become a mentor you need to agree to certain "terms" (in essence you agree to set a good example for newbies and invite them to the NN). You can only do that at such an NPC but since its really just a less-than-a-minute-and-done-thing you probably dont remember it.
So the answer is: Since ever - I recall going to the one in aleport when they introduced the mentor system.

Might be new to tanking. You can get a lot of tomestones so buying a set for a different job is a good way to use them up.

Ooh. I thought the tanks friends had lied about him being new. That makes more sense. My "does not compute" was directed had the claim that he was new, not toward you. :)

Got Cutter's Cry with my PLD last night. Team was a MNK, a DRG and a WHM.

I noticed right away by inspecting the WHM that it was his first healer job but thought he know how to play it.
That was not the case.

Now, he was not terrible far from it, but he made stuff that defied common sense. First of all he didn't have Esuna which is for me, kind of a must have for any dungeon and you know how Cutter's Cry loves them status effects.
Second he was DPSing. Not that I mind a healer DPSing, but I mind when the 2 DPS are dead and when I'm about to die and when I popped up my cooldowns.

I understand being new to your job and not being fully familiar with it but I think that at lvl 38, it is kind of expected from you to know how to play it.

I managed to give advices and he listened and some progress...but still.

I know I'm just bashing him but I hope that he is getting better at his job because he seemed to know his stuff, as he got 2 tanks and some DPS jobs at lvl 70.

This thread exists because new healers miss Esuna all the time. Frankly, role skills have not worked out that well for healers.

Me and two friends went into a leveling roulette and one wanted to take rogue in and I reminded him that it’s level 16, while he was 13. Other grind said he didn’t want to get sastasha anyway. We still got sastasha and with a sprout lancer. He said he was new so we gave him the full tour and had some fun joking around. Newbie lancer was great and I was glad we could give him a positive experience for his first dungeon.

Earlier today I wanted to continue gear grinding for desynth exp and ended up healing baelsar’s wall three times which was a bit of a mistake.

First run was quick with a dark knight tanks and two popoto red mages. Second time netted me two weird dragoon’s a a paladin that was allergic to mitigation as well as keeping aggro. The tank was in shield oath but constantly lost aggro from me ( dpsing) and the dragoons. And the dragoons... one used buffs and for the most part had heavy thrust up. The other one never used any buffs including heavy thrust but was using their jumps plenty while the other just didn’t.

The run was slow be we got through. Third time just went down hill from there. One paladin, a machinist and a mentor monk. The paladin pulls the mobs up around the corner and aggro goes everywhere. Everyone had dots on them and I am surprised I was able to manage to keep everyone alive. The tank used rampart, one of three of his buffs I will see through the run. We get to the first boss and I remind the paladin this boss might be the one with the tank busters ( I get the first and second ones confused)and hoped he would get the hint. Boss ends with him remarking on yep, that was the one. He didn’t use any mitigation despite understanding what a tank buster was. Second boss was a complete mess. Machinist dude decides to stay in a corner missing aoe healing and neglects using a turret. Monk is still quiet. Tank still doesn’t use cooldowns except for one random hallowed ground. Trying to keep up healing everything not paying attention to the motion jammers and trying to keep an eye on the tank he still ends up dying. I didn’t hit raise as I thought I did and ended up using swiftcast on something else, I try a hard raise while the machinist tanks. The paladin gets back up only to be shot down again right after. Swiftcast is up though so I get him back up. The machinist is at least giving the mana regen and I see mantra too which I was greatful for both. The machinist dies to aoe damage as I’m trying to heal the tank back up and I ended up neglecting myself which finally wiped it. I reminded everyone that the motion sensors do pick up auto attacks and the tank thanks me for the bit of information. We get there and him and the motion no are still attacking during that phase. Tank still dies but we managed to get through. At the last boss I remind the tank again about tank busters and it would be really nice if he could mitigate them if possible. I see sheltron once. Machinist buddy was the only one breaking me out of the chains until the end.

Tank was friendly but seriously unprepared. He had full shire gear but I didn’t check his classes. Minion dropped at the end and I ended up getting it. I’m just not sure I want to heal this dungeon again.

I keep seeing all these horror stories but I never reall end up in a bad party as bad as the one I was in. I guess the ingredient I was missing was just I wasn’t doing bealsar’s wall. Also...really long post?

I'm still annoyed they made esuna a role ability. :/ I'd much rather take rescue or something else instead of having to slot them in and out on the fly.

I got lost and DD today, ran all the way back to the start after a few pulls. We all had a good lol moment cause of that.

Had the weirdest Susano normal fight today on my Trials Roulette. Two newbies, one of them being a PLD in Shield Oath. I immediately pop into Sword Oath, do my greetings, and ...wait. Literally. Nobody is moving, but the majority of the party are ready to go. The SCH already threw out her Succors up, the WHM threw up a Medica II, some of the other DPS are ready....but nothing. And wouldn't you know it, my keyboard batteries died, so I can't say anything.

I literally start pacing behind the party as we wait for the PLD to pull. A full minute goes by before I get annoyed enough to do something I rarely do - I turned into a jerk. Maybe. I dunno.

I swapped into Shield Oath and pulled Susano myself. Sometime during the fight after I go back into Sword Oath while being MT, I notice that I'm losing aggro incredibly fast to the newbie PLD. Like, super fast. I had to waste a GCD going back into Shield and spam the hell out of my aggro combos - turns out, the PLD was repeatedly hitting their aggro combos as well, which meant that for 3/4th of the fight, I was fighting to keep my aggro lead.

In the last quarter of the fight, after an unfortunate Rasen Kaiyo caught me (I ran out of safe spots due to bad positioning of susano on my part), the newbie PLD FINALLY switches to Sword Oath. At the point, it's too late to have any noticeable effect - I haven't spammed my aggro combo that much outside of the early ARR dungeons. I didn't even bother to wait around to emote goodbyes or victory poses.

Yes, something little like that bugged me. Leave me alone :P

Was just grouped with the most toxic person I have ever seen. Was doing Syrcus Tower for alliance roulette, and for the entire run, this guy was on a drunk incoherent rant about politics. He basically wished death upon certain groups of people and did a lot of country bashing. At one point, he kept dying and everyone just said to leave him on the floor. I reported him and blacklisted him as fast as I could and I really hope everyone in that group did too.

I'm honestly surprised nobody kicked him, to be honest. In addition to reporting and blacklisting, I'd have suggested that, at the very least, my alliance refuse to fight any battles until they kicked that individual. I don't believe Syrcus Tower can be cleared with only two alliances.

Yesterday, doing Senpai Roulette on SCH for those sweet instaqueues and hoping for a dungeon I can be the green DPS in. Queue instantly pops (yay): 2 minute in progress. Suspicious.
I go in anyway, Amdapor City HM with the tank disconnected, SMN and a NIN (I think) just loitering about. So I do what any sensible person would do: I go from green DPS to green Tank! Was a lot of fun pulling stuff and keeping aggro, though the Titan summon definitely helped :D Right after we killed the first boss we got an actual tank though, so smooth sailing afterwards.
Sometimes suspicious In Progress queues can be undiscovered joy!

Had what is probably the 5th or 6th WAR tank in Baelsar's Wall in the past month that tries to do the whole dungeon in Deliverance and doesn't even at least build aggro for the final boss. End result: wipe because failed DPS check since one of the DPS was already in weakness. Literally one tick of Aero III = mobs all over me permanently. Like, I have no issues with tanking the trash & the first two bosses as WHM since they do basically no damage, but when a boss has an attack that will one-shot non-tanks, why not at least try and prevent a wipe?

Had one of the best raid parties last night! I queued up as astro for my daily alliance roulette and it turned out to be The World of Darkness. Not too shabby! Pretty nice raid, but sometimes people miss mechanics especially later at night (which it was).

Anyways, we get to the first boss Angra Mainyu. Things seem to be going okay. I did notice that the fight was seemingly taking forever, but I didn't think much of it. Everything was going swell until the boss reached 30-ish percent. He cast 100 flare and unfortunately half of my group brainfarts and dies including me. Out of the 4 other healers, no one resurrected me or my other party healer. So we just chatted in party channel until they wiped since they didn't have enough dps. I consoled my group saying "maybe they didn't notice we died so early ;]". Second time, we beat him just fine. It did take a really long time though. Worst raid dps I have seen in a while.

5-headed-dragon goes smoothly enough although slow again. Then we get to good old Cerberus. We end up wiping because only 3 people got themselves eaten. Apparently group B didn't know it stood for "belly". So my group rallied after the first wipe! We decided all of group C will be going into the belly. Someone saying "C is for carry". We beat him no problem on the second time around. The final boss was the only one we took down the first try XD. Everyone was so positive and having such a great time even though it was one of the slowest and sloppiest runs we had seen. I really love finding people like that in this game.

Don't forget. Group C is for "carry".

This is one of those situations where I just cannot stand the amount of ignorance have about proper tanking. So I tanked the first boss, tanked the 2nd boss, we get to Behemoth, run in, unmend and start my aggro combo and one of the other tanks provokes it. I Dark Arts my Power Slash and rip it back, and bring him to the correct position. Adds spawn, the other tanks dont pick them up. People dead left and right. We beat the fight without a wipe and someone puts in alliance chat "tanks wanna grab the adds"? I said "yeah, sorry, didnt want to move behemoth"... the guy starts telling me how "you were in grit and not picking up adds" so I respond politely by saying "I was tanking the boss" to which he said "yeah u lost aggro nub"...

I literally lost aggro for .5 seconds on the initial pull, and didnt lose it from there on out. I really get agitated when people think they know what happening and call people out but dont actually have any clue.

LotA last night for the seemingly billionth time this week, and had other people saying the same thing. It's like nothing else pops in Alliance roulette.

Anyhow, alliance B was hillarious. We spent the whole thing joking around about Costco, Tim Hortons, donuts, the glaze waterfall on a conveyor belt at Krispy Kreme, donut burgers... the entire run was really entertaining chat. Run itself had a mishap when somehow ancient flare killed us (looked like everyone was on pads), but everyone was upbeat and we got it next time.

Certainly took a "oh not this again" initial reaction and turned it into a really fun time. :)
