I agree a downplay or outright removal of the word "marriage" would probably work to SE's favor.
Expanding on the idea of signed/engraved rings, this was already a feature in XI (crafters can sign their gear; if I recall Yoshi-P mentioned the possibility of it happening in XIV too). I'd love to see it happen in XIV too!
I'm a female who plays a male character, so I ran into this "marriage" problem on XI, because my partner at the time was male playing male character; two males couldn't marry of course, so we made up for it by exchanging signed rings which we either equipped or carried in bazaar for 99999999999999999trillion gil (XD) Then they later introduced synthed wedding gear like the gowns for females, though males did not have formal attire until the 8th anniversary event).
Back to the topic of the word marriage though, if it's cast as something else, say..."union" or "joining of the souls" as others have suggested, SE could clean its hands of any "official" stance, because it's not CALLED marriage officially. The playerbase of course would refer to it as marriage, kind of the same way we have unofficial words for things like "aggro" vs emnity, "2-hr" instead of "special ability" (2hr coming from XI's 2hr cooldown of course)
The ceremony ITSELF can even be different, breaking away from the traditional events (such as bouquet throwing, or walking down aisle or something like that). Heck, even in real life wedding ceremonies vary greatly. Why not have a unique version for our in-game world? -
