NIGHT TIME!!

Game looks good but imo its not lighted (well) / dark enough.

I dont know if they have time but material properties (reflect/fract/ion) like luminescent behaviors would be awesome, right now everything is responding to light the same way. The ground looks like its giving off light (-a lot- more then naturally be bouncing back) lol.


Dont mistake the complaint as I think it looks bad - just not done / enough (which is probably true, since its alpha and all). Still Grid at night time is pretty cool looking ^^


Random aside: luminescent moments at night in the forest (think Avatar) or in caves (Dear Esther) would be pretty awesome :D

Can't wait to see this live, in 1080p, at max settings. Those lighting effects look very soft and warm...Welcoming..

I think the night images are looking great! One thing they mentioned they'd tweak in beta is the lighting (Yoshi-P said in a live letter it's still too bright at day). These night pictures certainly start scratching that itch. I look forward to seeing how daylight will change as well as all of the other time/weather effects. I remember the difference in the lighting from ver. 1's alpha/beta:

I guess the blueness of night in ver 1 was caused by Dalamud being there haha. I'm so used to seeing something absolutely epic in the sky for so long that it's a bit sad seeing only one moon now... With so much incredible scenery developing in Eorzea, I hope there will be "cool" stuff to look at in the sky as well in the future.

you guys might be right, maybe the tress are in the way, or maybe its just that particular region. I'm satisfied with what I'm seeing, but I really hope we can get a night sky like this.

I already complained a little so I didnt want to provoke the knights.. But now that you brought it up - Gridania's sky looks like it has /a little/ light pollution. I see more in the city then they are seeing there lol.

I think they design a 'slightly' light polluted night because they think their players have never seen the real night sky :P

in FFXI is not myth there are stars in each point and they have a color like red,blue,green and so on for each element. Each point on a compass had two points for each type of element one that make you get better HQ and one that make you get less HQ but more skill points to level up your craft but more risk of failing and if you fail in FFXI it's all over. Unlike FFXIV where you have a chance to fix your mistake and get 100% in FFXI it was craft and it happen in 2sec it would be you craft the item or you fail the item.

So that what most people going by in FFXI they had the same system even the moon help crafting in FFXI. In FFXI the moon change color which = a element so a full 100% moon fire day the moon would be red and it would help craft your item better. That why most people when crafting a item that would make 5+mil would wait for a full moon on the right element of there item.

I know in FFXIV there are stars for each color of the element but seeing how the stars move in the night sky it would be hard to stay crafting in the area the star is unlike FFXI where the stars never move and stay fix in the night sky.

Light pollution is actually an interesting idea to possibly implement. Now that I look at it, the third pic with the slightly purple sky looks like it has it. Maybe you can't see as much of the sky in industrious areas/cities and only get the full effect of the stars in certain zones? Either way though, while it certainly looks nice as is, some more oomph in the night sky would be nice!

I agree that it's nice to have more control over crafting, but in XI if you fail the synth you're only guaranteed to lose the crystal. There's still a chance you'll keep that rare Shining Cloth or whatever other materials you're using. At least in 1.0, if you failed the synth, you lost everything. There are perks to either system.

I think that is very interesting, still I think Grid really needs a little more oomph as you put it. I can imagine the Golden Saucer and perhaps if its in a Jueno/Zanarkand ish city area with tons of light pollution (just like a present day city).

i got 80 cooking in FFXI and i have to say i don't find that superstition at all when facing the direction for more skill up i did get more skill up when i needed HQ i did get HQ so in FFXI it was not fake in FFXIV it could or may not be fake.

so depending on who your guardian was, at certain points in the moon phase you would have better success with crafting, drops from monsters, and materia synthing. In version 2.0 we will have to figure out the new system yoshi-p puts in place.

firefall a sandbox FPS has the best use of lighting at night not too dark not to bright and you can use a flash light.

Sometimes, we somehow don't believe reality because it doesn't seems real. If you try to simulate it in a game or something then people won't feel like it's real either!
It's the case with the night sky there, I think, they probably tried to do something similar to what a city person would see (I can say that there is still far more stars in the LL screenshot than I ever saw even the middle-of-nowhere city I spent two years at!).

Also hidden somewhere there might also be the "Let's not put a far too complex/high quality backdrop in the sky because of performance issues" situation, there's a reason we got FoV and sadly a really realistic sky would kind of push things in my opinion :(

well I did link that limsa image and say 'to give them them a fair shake' - because the photo did have some stars (very low res imo, but there was a number).

If you've really got away from all the light pollution on a clear night you'd see more. That or I was just really lucky.

There may be a point to the computer specs though. Its hard for me to say because I've never had that problem... lol

Whenever I load up skyrim or oblivion I make sure to HD the crap out of my stars (right click view image or open in new tab to see it at a better scale)

I had this idea of, since dalamud shattered in the sky, that gravity would have rendered thousands of chunks of the former moon to coalesce into a ring around the planet.

That way weather effects could include the Aurora Borealis lighting effects that we saw in 7th umbral, and on occasion, meteor showers, or a vision of the ring in the night sky, like this example.

This looks excellent! In 1.0, it all sorta just looked like daytime but darker. Now it actually looks like night! I love it!

General comments about the new photos...

I'm relieved to see that some of these key locations in Gridania have survived Bahamut's bombardment (Leatherworker and Adventurer's Guilds in those images). The tree canopy is not as dense (can't call it the "Black Shroud" anymore, maybe?) and there is a lot more atmospheric lighting effects. Very nice! ^^

1.0 version of the Leatherworker's Guild. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a nice nightime image in my collection...

That's a cool idea too: having remnants of Dalamud in the sky. I've been trying out Aion the last few days while I wait for beta and this reminded me of the moon there. Having a mini red version of this as a remnant of Dalamud complete with floating rock chunks swirling around would be sweet.

It could also be cool to have different Deity/Primal constellations depending on what elemental day or month it is. Occasionally bringing back things like auroras or meteor showers is also great.

In the end, I think what it needs is something I'd never be able to see in real life - something fantasy. Having a starrier sky with some nebulas is definitely a good start as many can't go out and see that since they live in cities. But even something as simple as two moons is something none of us can ever see outside our own windows. Not having something fantastical in the sky seems like a waste of potential.

That's impossible lol Bahamut blew Dalamud up to a million pieces and it scattered all over Eorzea when he flies down to start the rain of fire theres only a huge cloud of red dust up there

The bolded seems like a great idea! If they do add days of the week back (which I hope they do) or even months, it'd be great if they added something like that in the sky to complement it. It'd be a very neat little detail.

Since the moon in the pic is mostly empty (kinda like a broken egg shell) my suggestion was maybe there was a small bit remaining after that explosion (maybe even only floating chunks). Regardless, I agree with you that the end movie and these new beta night pics confirm there's absolutely nothing left. The Dalamud remnant idea was just a "what-if" thing we could've put in the sky.
