Mentioned FFXI on the FFXIV Forums - Check.
People butthurt over a nonissue - Check.
Yep, seems the 2 main reasons present. It's a good feature much like it's tied with "Soandso browses your bazaar/buys" which no one seems to complain about in XI nor did anyone complain about it in XIV (buying). The only issue as said was the wording on JP client.
I really hate to break it to you, but those of us who played FFXIV knew there was a check feature in XIV and people were already anal about your meld situation, much worse than in XI.
^^
This.
If you are that self conscious about what someone else who has no part in paying for your game or playing it for you thinks of what you chose to equip, you really have no business playing an mmorpg. It's gonna happen like it or not and you might as well get over it if you don't want to be in a never-ending state of butt frustration because people keep examining you. I used to have people unequip their gear on XI when I examined them and or try to cry to me about it in which case I would go into troll mode and keep checking them till they stopped switching out and I got to look at whatever I wanted to see. It's not that big of a deal but at the same time but for the sake of the cry babies it's best that the notification of being checked stays out of 14 to avoid the inevitable "omg y u checkin ma gear!!" QQing.
I don't really see anything wrong with bringing it back.
#1 - The only time it really annoyed me in FFXI was when ppl were constantly checking me and going in and out of my bazaar. BUT player bazaars are being removed in ARR, so situation resolved from a different direction.
#2 - Leave it togglable (is that a word?) so ppl who dont want it, dont have it; and ppl who do, do.
Also, whether u get a notification or not, ppl who are going to examine you and judge ur character based on what your wearing at that moment are still going to do so. And honestly, considering this is going to exist anywys, i would like to know when someone does examine me/ That way if it leads to them behaving towards my character as being 'not good enough' i know that this player is someone I don't want to share my game experiences with.
See that may work with one region only MMORPG but you have to consider not all players play like the US so the devs need to consider all sides of the argument when they decide stuff like this. And as we all know from XIV they didn't put it in, so they may as well keep it that way for their own reasons or they may end up adding it in. We'll have to wait and see, but my guess is it's JP MMORPG after all so they will probably listen to JP players demands. It's just a damn text saying XX is examining you anyways... it doesn't really make any difference if it was displayed or not. But SE knows from XI that majority of JP players did no like it.
Never really got offended with people checking me. I always found it as a way to see what gear I could improve on. There are people out there better then me, so I should learn from them. Sending tells to someone complaining about their gear is rude though, even if it is true.
One time in FFXI I had a Warrior's Belt from Dynamis Valkurm, and another war sent me a /tell saying "Wow, a Warrior with a Warrior's Belt but no Amemet Mantle +1. Nice."
I understand the awkwardness of the original meaning of the /check in FFXI w JP. But honestly, why did SE overlook the awkwardness for 10 years and going, but know that the meaning in the other localized versions isn't offensive; and leave it that way. It shouldn't be hard to have a notification message for JP that isn't awkward in FFXIV or FFXI.
It's only fantasy. I still fail to understand why any option in a video game would be offensive. If a offensive comment was made that's a different story. But getting upset that someone checked you is insane. Some people are jerks by nature and some people could be admiring your gear as well. I'm fairly new to mmos, and I've had people check my gear and conplement me, or they advices me that my gear might not be good enough to do a certain raid. I never find it offensive or some should ask before you check. That's just plan insanity. Good luck with that. I will enjoy my gaming experience regardless.
Some JPs flipped so much at this ...specially females ..it was like "____ feels you up" lol i once even got a reply "die american die! FU!!!" etc etc
It was kind of creepy when people I didn't know began to examine me... If they want to look at my gear I would rather not know they were doing it...
It doesn't serve any purpose, therefore no.
examine cost bandwidth :(
You must not play with many Americans I take it. It's not "taking it seriously", the wording of it could be seen pretty rude not the concept of checking out someone's gear. You have to ignore Warlock, he was over exaggerating greatly. The wording was "stares at you intently", not "feels you up" because that makes zero sense at all.
Since it's funny that in his fake example:
1. The JP player knew he was American without either speaking a word to each other.
2. Ignores the fact JP players actually use the examine system as well but tend to ask each other before hand, but not always.
3. Was likely that he talked shit about the JP player thus keying the person into knowing he's american.
Otherwise, it's oddly specific for a JP player to say "go die american" to a person that has no proof without something happening before hand. I have however seen plenty of Americans hop into the JP Tera beta telling the JP players to go to die to another atomic bomb.
must just be people who get butthurt over things that actually happen to them in game, just like people who literally hate ffxi, they all had these retardedly miserable situations in the game, from sitting in town all day lol, to in this case being asked why the fuck you naked, or wearing mele gear on your whm. i've never made fun of people but i've heard it all lol. my first day in dunes was pretty cool, i was noob and didn't know of/how to make macros and after the party some dudes help me make a bunch that was needed to cure faster. also i worked my way there from the solo areas and lol was basically naked too lmao, i just went back to town and bought a few things. no need to cry about it. no gils then welcome to mmo's ..go make some. don't want to, welcome to offline games. for the love of God, stop trying to change mmo's for the worse over your experiences. your hate = someones love, now it's your good enough/like = why do they still call these mmo's.
but again this doesn't need to be in game, just let us check without them knowing. but knowing if someone isn't geared for a dungeon is a good thing. some games you can't tell until your losing over and over. or you lol shout for a healer but he is dps specs and was to cheap to pay the gold to switch for the event and ruined it and locked everyone. happens a lot. people are just ridiculous some times. off subject since i mentioned it, i hate dps healers, lmao. if they had them in ffxiv i would kick you in a second.
Dont see the big deal bout being examined, my reply macro was "/em feels examined then put his pants back on."

Protip: Every country has jerks.
used to love doing /em examines you. and everyone around would think i'm examining them and then i'd do it like 10times lol. i still do this in ffxiv but usually i just do /em wave. then eventually toss out a emote that doesn't look like a real one with it so they get what i'm doing. is pretty funny.
I would like to see an option to turn that examine on/off... And in some games you can link ur gear or parts of your gear in chat which is pretty nice.
^^^What this person said.
ANyway, best to leave the feature out, if people are simply going to use it to go berserk on others for literally no reason at all. I really don't care if someone examines me. Heck, I'll pose for it if you want. It's no big deal to me.
But then again, I have a life. lol
Wow ....... And wow to Americans telling Japanese to get hit by another bomb... Just wow..
I mean there is such a thing like crying over jponry or 'merica but telling people to "irl" die... Please ban, and then post their IP for further banning.
Examine is a silly thing to get mad over since the information strictly relates to gear and not your cup size. It would be interesting to see full cloaks over armor that make examining the gear impossible... Fun realism but probably just annoy raid leaders lol.
I remember someone said that on allakazham somewhere and got trouble by GMs... ouch that's hurt... >.<
I am not offended by 'jponry' but was offended by English speakers when they were against Japanese..
Self-esteem of Asians can be bad and also can get feelings hurt easily.
People being self-conscience is all it is. And on the internet, at that. Checking someone's gear isn't looking into their soul and discovering their dark secrets. It is seeing what gear they have and comparing it to what you've seen other people wear. It is a tool for keeping track of gear trends or identifying if there is a piece of gear that you've overlooked.
Don't have much to say on JP-ONRY, was rude at times but sometimes I could understand.
Like in YoshiP's last interview he mentions how Japanese players still needs to breakthrough the language barrier, there are many out there not wanting to speak English. They learn English in school (not fluent but enough to start learning more) so I'm sure it will work out but some rather just stick with their own language group so they have JP-ONRY in their search comment. Some were just trying to be rude though.
I know some going to say but NA players are willing to play with anyone! I understand that well being half JP/NA myself. Again it's JP culture stuff... some are open just like NA players, while some are still having trouble breaking through just yet. My linkshell (Me, my wife + others) was trying to help those JP players try to learn English in XI while NA players can learn JP, was a cool LS overall. Miss all the LS members, I know some are on this forums, some I talk to on FB :)
I remember that only one person getting upset using /check.
I was a Red Mage and I was rather puzzled because I was admiring his gear.
So so I went around the corner casted Invisible and Sneak and continued to examine him. I could tell he was trying to find me. It was quite funny. Still never understood why people would get upset.
I can appreciate RPing, but people that take it personal are just weird. It's a virtual bunch of pixels.
I want this back in, so people silly enough to get upset over something so meaningless get over it. Seriously, this was by far one of the dumbest things I have ever had the displeasure of witnessing in a video game. You're getting checked whether it tells you or not buddy.
I don't need to be notified if someone check me or not. I'll just turn the notification off since it serves no purpose in my humble opinion. it just takes up a line in the chat log space.
Back in the ToAU era my friend seeked on his brd before he went to sleep and put NA Only in his comment, when he woke up he checked his log got a ton of tells from JPs, saying he was raciest, or to go home, pond over there, or GM call ect.
Apparently the JP don't like it when people put NA only in their comments.
I'm not a big fan of the "<t> has examined you" text that plagued FFXI so no I rather not see it in FFXIV:ARR
I never said that for JPs it says "____ feels you up" ..i said that is the kind of offence they take when you /check them ..and yes one of them said that to me lol it was Titan server ..she sure was some extreme JP ..others only slapped you or shook their heads at you ..or as someone said they swapped gear ...i have no need to lie about it
