I think a fair amount of time to give is until 8.0, personally. Which is probably what I will do, as much as I dislike the story in this expansion and lack of any meaningful change, they still have some patches to cook on.
If the story continues to be alá 4 kids, very juvenile with minimal QoL and 8.0 announcements contain the same old package, it might be time to hang the hat until they do fix the game to be more interesting outside of hanging out or some other MMO manages to offer the same type of experience but with a better engine that can work on things more fluently.
No hats for Viera and Hrotgar for how many years now? I don't even play Viera or Hroth and it makes me upset for them.
The problem is that people will continue the cycle of "just wait til x to be better" when it doesn't become better at all. Once 8.0 comes out, it'll be "wait til 9.0" then "wait til 10.0" etc etc. I honestly don't see the game becoming better unless they do some drastic changes, specifically to the battle system.
TWW story is the same mediocre WoW trite, but the dungeons this time around are really damn good. I wish FF would go balls to the wall crazy with new ideas for dungeons instead of the same old hallways with boring trash packs and bosses that just constantly reuse the same mechanics with new special effects.
The Dawnbreaker dungeon has a couple fights where the gameplay feels cinematic instead of just being a cinematic. Flying away on your mount to get away from the giant AOE or chasing the boss through the dungeon while collecting orbs so you don't die to the radiating damage is really cool. The team should really look into spicing up what actually happens in the dungeons and what you're doing because DT feels like just more of the same of what we've always had.
Get experimental, get weird with it. Make me say, "wow that surprised me!"
I would gladly have unsubbed. Unfortunately I have a couple of friends who play this as their only long-term multiplayer game. I don't personally know anyone who thought the MSQ wasn't terrible. We play mostly for the raids and in anticipation of the next field operations.
Their new payment processor pretty much neccessitated I switch to payment through Crysta so I did, because of the extra steps involved in paying for my sub I'm now switching from a permanent sub for the sake of convenience to only subbing when I have content (I am interested in) to do.
This is going to see me unsub until 7.1 or the next seasonal event with interesting rewards (that being All Saints' Wake I guess).
This is the first expansion where I've felt like I was scammed to pay for it. From the trailer focusing on the scions who ended up being background noise in a crap tier story (that the devs are still pretending is fine) and my character being ruined by the graphical update, to one of the new jobs being butchered right after launch. Lots of people are struggling to even play with their friends. It's like they tried to patch out the fun in every possible way. And the scam is still ongoing. They left out Wuk's voiced lines from the patch trailer but she is no doubt going to be center stage once again.
I've unsubbed because square enix seems to have forgotten what this game is for. It is not a marriage. We're not going to counseling, we're not negotiating and talking about our feelings to make it work and we're not staying together out of mutual obligation. It's a hobby and its only purpose is to provide fun in exchange for money. They think they can stop providing fun and still collect money so they can divert it to other projects but that's not how this works. If it isn't fun, I will not pay for it. Ultimately it's their choice to design it that way and ignore feedback.
Reasons I unsubbed
1. ARR MSQ was and still is absolutely awful.
2. Burned out after raiding
3. I had better games to play. TERA's combat was vastly superior to ff14, and so was Blade and Soul's. Also played a LOT of BG3, an absolute masterpiece of a game. GW2 has vastly superior world exploration and hit hard as a GW1 fan.
4. I wanted to touch some grass and life got busy.
I want to unsub, but I can't
Being Held Hostage:
1. I like to keep my house, which makes it impossible to get off the game for like 3-4 months.
Reasons I would like longer breaks a possibility:
1. Content has gone to 5-6months interval, if not worse.
2. Areas in the game is dead, no world content for max level.
3. To many jobs in the game, meaning much less diversity in how played.
4. Dungeons and Raids quickly gets old.
MAJOR REASONS I like to have longer breaks:
1. We get content, but it disappear again, why not keep previous Unreal trials as a possibility?
2. Everything is instanced, no world content for max level AT ALL!!
3. No level 100 area in all areas, eg. the main city state areas... sure have new player instance, but when max level a lvl100 instance opens to pick from.
4. The Hunt is not all synched to level 100 content and is not upsynched to max item level either.
5. Treasure hunt is a mixed affair, keep it all max level content for the instanced part would be nice.
6. Only Hard content is released, what is there to be excited about having a dead world.
1. Tank self-sustain is ridiculous
2. All jobs feel the same, unique mechanics get streamlined into dull oblivion
3. Eye strain/visual overload makes the game unplayable
I wont unsub just yet cause of housing and i still love the world lore, but when i think that we could had a amazing pirate expansion in the new world and instead we got this peacefull, boring, dull and disappointing contest i almost get the urge to delet my characters.
How can anyone even approve such a bland story?
I no longer feel I am getting value for my monthly sub. After years of supporting the game (from ARR till now) it's clear SE doesn't want to invest in the game any more; and I'd rather not pay monthly just to have my money go towards more failed projects of theirs.
If, and this is a big if, they can release an expansion with a reasonable amount of content (ie: none of this 'wait till 1 year or longer after the expansion to get most of the good stuff/repeatable content) AND reduce the duration of patch cycles while keeping a good amount of content in said patch cycles, I'll re-sub. I highly doubt that will happen though.
Unsubed.
There are specific things that led to the following, but more essentially comes down to the following, (such that multiple ways of fixing it I'd accept):
Why I actually unsubbed
- I had loads of happy friends at the end of EW looking forward to DT. About six weeks after DT, I had no friends still logging in on my DC. (No one to run any content or rouls with, no hopes of having friends to do extremes with again, or maybe even try Savage for the first time... all evaporated.) I have almost zero reason to hope I'll ever be able to play with them again.
- It makes me 'sad' to see all those happy sprouts, bouncing around on Chaos... and to think of the pain some of them will have to go through... when they realise they are getting a 4th class experince on Chaos that they now have to accept... or they are going to have to loose their friends and exodus to Light. And Square Enix not only doesn't care enough to fix it, then don't care enough to offer and 'adequate' explanation. For this we need detail. (What's the 'specification' of what you think needs doing to fix it? and why technically cant you do it? Make a promise [not like with chat bubbles though])
Why am I staying away indefinitely,
- Even if I made friends on Light I'll loose most of them when they hit endgame I think unless they RP which I don't do.
- I'm very bored with the everything easier than extremes, and I don't enjoy the PF culture of "only join my PF if your going come up to scratch and help me do business, and get my clear, so I can F off, Im not here to play the game 'with' any you, I just have to is all")
---
The background.
I was on Chaos. Everyone I knew stopped playing, bored not having fun, for whatever reason.
Its hard building communities of casual players, when the game never keeps them for long, and you have to constantly kick people who are not logging in 'now' because of a useless CWLS limit of 64.
I had for a long time been tired of struggling to queue a lot of content on Chaos (basic casual stuff) and then heading over to Light and immediately getting a sub 5 minute pop.
Getting the same boring ARR HW instances in rouls on Chaos, and getting way better random later game instances on Light.
So I transferred to Light... I now had zero hope I'd even see those one or two people I used to know just to say 'hi' to. Although it was literally max of two at a time online.
The loss of my estate (or an estate a friend 'loved' building for me) hurt quite a bit.
I was unhappy.
That left the content. Great as they were I was bored with AAC normals and everything below that.
Extremes? I got my one clear in each, and yeah... I wasn't going to suffer 300 wipes, and numerous rude party abandons in PF for !99! totems when I barely want mounts myself anyway. I'd have happily queued those Extremes for no reward in a roul or duty finder all day long, if I didn't have to worry about measuring up to a PF advertisement, or people getting irritated and abandoning because their clear wasn't guaranteed.
No friends. A Bad taste in my mouth. No 'enjoyable' BS free 'gameplay' for me.
Unsubbed. Issues as listed in previous threads.
I am really just still here because i don't wanna lose the house i had for Years.
I stopped raiding a long time ago cause the struggle isn't worth it. 2 Patches later you throw everything away you worked months for. Sadly, casual content gets completely sidelined or outright forgotten. Yay we get a savage alliance raid which will probably require the use of the bullyfinder. Nice.
Also the Patch cycles are rediculous right now. We get much less content than years ago but they allow themselves more and more time to make it. SE is pumping FF14's money in failing nonsense instead of expanding the ONE Game that keeps them afloat.
PvP removed my 2 favorite Roles and made EVERYBODY a DPS. I literally can no longer be a Healer or a Tank. (I play since the end of ARR)
Having started the Game early, the only thing that is left from what the Game once was are the characters and the Story. I have SOME hopium left still but if there are no big improvements, i might really just give up like i did on other Games.
I thought unsubbed people couldn't post here?
Ah I see.
I usually stay unsubbed if an Ultimate doesn't grab me, so I unsub for .1, .3 and .5 patches. The .5 patches actually make me unsub for nearly a year.
After reaching endgame I kind of accepted that FFXIV doesn't have enough content to grab my time and that's fine.
If the new Field zone is interesting I might stay a bit longer but I usually don't stay subbed unless there's a savage going on.

For anyone wondering, there's flooding in spain so Chaos/Light are now safe to unsub, godbless spain.
