I’d like to add some feedback for elezen features in the 7.0 graphic update we see in the benchmark. While the overall graphic updates to the game are looking great, I do have some concerns regarding some of the changes made to elezen features that I will touch on below:
- Earclasps: While the texture quality of the earclasps has been upgraded, they are now significantly smaller and less prominent than the current in-game version. Considering these ear clasps are a race-specific feature a player can add to customize elezen ears, I’m a little disappointed that they’ve been sized down so much.
https://i.imgur.com/f0kHoqK.jpeg
-Facial Features: Facial features for player characters across the board have been softened thanks to the higher poly count and softer lighting, which I think makes a nice improvement for many races, however I do think these updates have been applied a bit too broadly and as a result we are losing some of the key sharp/angular features that elezen are typically known for, ie pointy noses, sharp jawline, etc.
https://i.imgur.com/d2BcpDX.jpeg
There are also a couple other concerns that I think may apply as more general graphical update feedback:
-Lips: I’ve noticed that overall the shape of the lips now have a slight upwards curve at the corners, giving the face less of a neutral expression in the default state and more of a soft smile. While it’s a lovely facial expression to perhaps see in a cutscene (which have some great facial/character animation in the benchmark by the way), its probably not the best idea to have this as the default in the character creator.
-Skin: Maybe this is just a bug, as I’m only really noticing it in the character creator when a cloud is passing overhead, but the skin will sometimes look too shiny and dewy, giving the appearance that the character is wet. Overall I think the new skin textures are nice, but this shinyness gives the feeling that the skin is waxy and its a little uncanny valley to me, personally.

I know there’s probably a lot of things being commented on as players are testing out their characters in the new benchmark, and much to work on before the Dawntrail release. I appreciate all of the hard work going into making our Warriors of Light and Eorzea looking as awesome as possible!! As you continue to work on the graphical update, I hope we can keep those special flavors that make each race unique in place
The lifeless eyes and the lips are my main issues. These change the character vibe so much.
I as hoping with the upgrade they would add new features. But there's no settings I can use to correct those.
If the devs don't change anything, I'll have a feeling to play with a husk of my 10 year old character.
At first I was disappointed, now I'm a bit sad I might lose her.
I do hope they keep the long eyelashes or even better give us the option to toggle them like male Viera! They are very lovely and I always wanted the option since men often have really nice lashes, but it is jarring if you never had them and didn't want them.
Eyelashes already looked pretty good on male Elezen. It's noticable on Urianger. I hope his pretty looks survive the update. :/
It has definitely taken the wind out of my sails. My main Midlander is looking alright, but most of my other characters are varying degrees of feeling like they're all about to be snatched away from me, never to be reclaimed if these changes aren't reversed. My Elezen and Au Ra have it worst, but I'm worried for all of them.
I'm not too happy with the old man face brows #5 being plucked of its thickness and also blending in with the skin colour too much?
Close up you can see them, but from afar it looks like he has no eyebrows. I don't really want to have to change his skin colour or his hair colour, but I will make him go darker if I have to.
https://i.imgur.com/yUuibTj.png
I also miss the more obvious white highlights in their eyes. It looks a little dull now without them
Other than that, I think more definition of wrinkles is needed as it feels like they smoothed them out a little? It could be just lighting and I don't wanna sound too picky, I just love my ol retired bard a lot. ^^;
I do love his ears, they are my fave. Heh.
Well I don't think "play this race for dark circles" makes any sense. I'm sorry you guys are mad but I think a better solution is letting people decide if they want their variation to have them or not. Maybe they should make some faces have them and some not, or diminish the shadow with a slider. Or both. I don't think "just keep it the same" is productive. It sounds like whining. And I hate to be that guy but a lot of the feedback seems like this. It's just unilateral "noop"
The option would be nice, but we're not getting new options. At least not for a while. When we get to 8.0 and they announce the character creator overhaul, then they can add the dark circle slider. For now, remove them.
It's better to please the current players of the race than maybe appealing to other people who don't play it.
Some of the most egregious changes seem to be to the actual facial features, not the lighting. After looking at these before/after sliders, it becomes way more apparent. Biggest changes include shape of the nose and how it now looks perfectly straight and thicker on the top, lips are now upturned, eyes have been reshaped and more lidded, brow has been lifted and reshaped, and overall face shape has changed. It's easy to see if you run the slider back and forth to look at what's different. Combined, this is a LOT of changes to introduce for seemingly no reason. Texture and lighting, great, but why were the faces re-touched this much? Before and after sliders found here:
imgsli.com/MjU1ODgx
imgsli.com/MjU1ODg3
imgsli.com/MjU1ODg4
imgsli.com/MjU1ODkw
imgsli.com/MjU1ODkx
That doesn't even look like the same character, in any lighting. I think less re-touching on the actual face shapes and features would have been better. I get needing to update the textures, but this goes way beyond that.
Returning to this thread because apparently I take this elf business very seriously.
I did a more in-depth comparison of how the features changed. Not lighting, the features. I've already vented my frustrations about the lighting, but these changes I find egregious.
Not to mention, they look technically worse (mouth line and waterlines are now very, very pixelated. I know this is due to added mouth and eye bones for animations, but it looks really, really bad.)
Anyway, here's my Duskwight being subjected to the horrors. Again. I took his makeup and his lipstick off. So this is just bare, au naturel Ishgardian.

Benchmark is first, my real girl is second (Face 1 Duskwight). My current grievances with the Benchmark changes:
1) The ears (shape 3) are smaller than they used to be. These ears are at 100 length, I feel like they should not be this short
2) the eye makeup is lighter. I'm sure this is great on lighter skin characters, however Face Paint 3 is on Dark and Black and you can't even see it on the Benchmark. You can see it on my girl in 6.0 much more clearly. This also brings up my grievance with the lip colors, as at this level of skin depth there aren't many colors that are darker than her skin tone, so ou end up only having two choices out of how many colors? 30? More if you split between Dark/Light?
3) the eyebrows are lighter, again changing the look of her face.
4) the mouth is a completely diff shape, it's wider than before and all of the lip options have this same width except for Lip 4, which's narrower BUT it's also a lot thinner, so it again completely changes the look. The smile is off on these lips too.
5) the eyes are a diff shape, which is probably my biggest grievance in all of this. The eyes are lower and heavier on her face, and they completely change the vibe coming from my character.
6) the cheekbones are a lot less prominent than before. She's just visually less pointy and I miss her pointyness.
7) the eyelashes are just a solid black line in the benchmark, when in 6.0 they have definition and you can actually *see* them.
8) I don't know if it's the lighting, but the hair feels much less saturated and it got rid of the only true ginger hair option that the elezen had.
All and all, I've messed with all of the face shapes and options and my WoL has apparently been lost to the nether. I don't know who this new 7.0 character is. This is not my Duskwight.
Also, the mouth rigging lmao:

Your suggestion of having some faces have them or not is exactly what we had in 6.58: Wildwood had dark circles, and Duskwight did not. The 7.0 benchmark removed that feature. Is it that difficult to understand that we are complaining about a feature that now has been removed?
I'm also assuming you do not play an elezen? Coming in here to call our legitimate complaints 'whining' does not do anything but make you look like someone who is unable to emphasize with the attachment people have with their characters. Would you be saying the same thing if your character was changed in a way that you did not like?
Well said.
I don't know, I feel like they made objectively a good job with the upgrade, but character fidelity is just not there for me. I love the way light diffuses now on faces, which will avoid weird shapes appearing on my elezen in extreme lighting situations, but at the same time I can't be 100% happy with how I feel like my character got completely sanded. Feels like he lost 10 years, and now in a good way. Like, the big pic shows how good the lighting diffusing on the face is, but if you look at the small one, honestly, I see almost two completely different characters. Hard to be happy...

Also, having a couple duskwight, why do we have dark circles now.................
Also, why race gear on the neck is a flat line and everything else is updated

overall, I think I came out of this relatively unscathed, though his mouth/nose region looks weirdly Emet-Selch-esque now that I'm comparing the two side-by-side
I don't think I like the light diffusions very much, it makes it look like the characters are glowing from the inside in a very weird way
since the ear clasp nerf was already commented on, I'll hit on something else that I noticed immediately & bothers me distinctly: highlights??????????????????????

Aight, first time using these forums.
Not gonna lie, I like the update a ton. Apart from the mouth movements and it showing me the cold hard truth that some hairstyles are not fitting our heads with and without the graphical update.
And i mean they are quite literally not connected correctly, thought they might get fixed with the update, but alas, doesn't seem so. https://imgur.com/a/QIx8h3Q
Got no clue how to insert images, hope this worked O:

I really wish they'd add a neutral colored and well lit room for the character creation. My Duskwights look like they got soaked in the rain no matter what environment I use.
https://i.imgur.com/7mf1Vwi.jpeg
The red hair looks way different from character creation to the benchmark cutscenes too.
https://i.imgur.com/nQfJnu4.png
On the final fight with the two head Mamool Ja, during what I assume is the Viper's lb3, the light effects make my characters look like they have tinsel in their hair. It's more prominent on black hair.

Regarding the Fem Elezen mouth, mine looks like she's wearing a mouth guard lol

Which makes this supposedly awesome part of the fight really awkward looking. It's like her lower teeth row is trying to escape her mouth.

I played around with my gamma settings to see if it would help with the inconsistent lighting in character creation but it looks like it only applies to the benchmark cutscene.
i’m glad i’m not the only one who was upset by the earclasps ;w; not sure why they would make them smaller it seems like such a strange choice to me

I'm eating good in Dawntrail.
Lip type 2 for Face 1 male Elezen looks too drastically different. What had a rounder shape before is now WAY sharper - to be honest this looks like a completely different lip shape altogether with way less personality
The cupid's bow is far too sharpened in the Benchmark, unlike the original's more undulated and plumper shape. The upper lip also used to be fuller (and I miss the creases at the side of the mouth...)
https://64.media.tumblr.com/1af8fefc...59817c9cd0.pnj
https://64.media.tumblr.com/afcf074b...ef185cc3db.pnj
Something about the new lips just overall looks worse than the previous models, they look so matte and have less definition which actually makes them look less natural than before.
Overall I'm VERY happy with how my boy came out.
I think his features are all sharper and cleaner and his eyes are stunning.
My only complaint is the same that many players with darker characters are experiencing in how his skin looks less warm than before. He's greyer.
I'm hoping this is an issue with how historically awful the character creator has been at its one job of featuring characters, combined with the Benchmark's gamma settings.
Otherwise the character I'm most happy with is my elezen.
I'm excited to play him like this.
https://i.imgur.com/Ix3K36h.png
I was a bit depressed when I saw the changes on my main.
His eyebrows got completely changed (that's what bothers me the most!!), his hair is way less textured and looks lighter, the scars look different, he has less wrinkles...
And I noticed that there is a big hole now between the beard and the jawline.
https://64.media.tumblr.com/bfca9d85...021bcef6fd.jpg
https://64.media.tumblr.com/038d577e...f32a01caf0.jpg
Mostly upset about the brow thing, the rest I can cope with I think (even though it's a downgrade like the hair).
I posted my character's before vs. after in one of the larger threads already, but having had a few days to eye it over some more I couldn't help but feel that my character looked slightly off. Pictured here, for posterity:
https://i.imgur.com/pjErWZ1.png
Now, the main thing that annoyed me on face 1 were the eyebrows. It honestly looks like the 6.0 before picture has much more clearly-defined eyebrows, which is a bit ridiculous. How can the textures possibly be getting downgraded this badly in a supposed graphics overhaul? The Dawntrail eyebrow texture looks like a dark smear or smudge running across the character's brow; like a brush stroke. The eyebrows in the before image even have the thicker eyebrow facial feature turned on, yet the newer ones that have the option off appear to be bigger. So I decided to play around with the character creator a bit to see what I could do to mitigate or fix this issue, and found a couple of things.
https://i.imgur.com/hCpLk5k.png
Firstly, the eyebrows on face 1 have been given a 'shadow' underneath the eyebrows which, depending on the hair color, serve to make the eyebrows appear longer and thicker. It's about the same as the eyebrow face paint that Highlander men might use to give themselves faux-eyebrows in lieu of real ones. You can see in the close up using two extreme hair colors that the shadow extends a bit from the actual end of the eyebrow (most prominent in the black hair color), and is quite a bit thicker than the actual eyebrow itself (most prominent in the white hair color). From further away it's pretty easy to assume that it's just part of the eyebrow, which is likewise easy to see in the initial before vs. after split pic. A good way to recreate this and really see the problem is by booting up the benchmark, loading up a face 1 Elezen, and then running your mouse over the top row of hair colors while looking at the eyebrows. The shadowing becomes massively apparent, and not in a good way.
https://i.imgur.com/F1zbL1L.png
Secondly, none of the other Elezen faces have this problem. Not only do the other faces not have a shadow, but they also clearly have much more defined and detailed eyebrow textures overall. This collage with each of the Elezen faces included in it uses the same hair color, and it's clear as day that the latter three faces look sharper and darker, with detail high enough that you can see the individual hairs if you look closely enough. Meanwhile, how does face 1 look? Like a smudge. Awful.
The kicker for me is that the 6.0 Elezen face 1 doesn't seem to have this problem either—or at least, if the shadowing does exist, it's not nearly as overwhelming as it is in the benchmark. I realize this is an extremely nitpicky detail to be nitpicky over, but as someone who very deliberately chose Duskwight to have thinner eyebrow options compared to Wildwood, the new (not upgraded; this is clearly a totally new and worse texture compared to the original) eyebrow textures and their thickness slightly bothers me. It's subtle, but it does make a difference that's clearly noticeable enough to the naked eye if I'm sitting here committing a few hours of my life to cataloging it in-detail. The problem seems to exist between both Wildwood and Duskwight face 1 Elezen, although I have not spent as much time examining Wildwood since my own character is a Duskwight.
If anyone at SE happens to be reading this: please revert the eyebrow shadowing and touch up the eyebrow texturing for face 1!! I'm not really sure why you felt the need to introduce these changes, but the shadowing seems like it would be better as an optional facial feature and the texturing is simply bad compared to the other facial options.
The new lighting is certainly only made for white skinned characters at the moment. Dark skin and fantasy skin tones seem a little odd. My boy is a very light grey with cool undertones and the CC made him a little yellow.
I'm so glad you like him! I love my updated boy a lot too (sans the dark circles). Elezen are certainly one of the better updates of the races.
I'm not thrilled about the changes to my character's face, but I can learn to live with it...
But there are still things worth calling out.
Current is on Left, Dawntrail on Right:
https://i.imgur.com/AsecS69.jpeg
https://i.imgur.com/IhztLRM.jpeg
https://i.imgur.com/01wUD0T.jpg
The eyes now look more dull/deadened compared to the original, eyebrows are fatter and less angular, and the lips are not even the same (new upper lip is not as thick and is tapered)
But more worrying than that is how now the skintone behaves weirdly in the smallest of lighting changes. When the outdoor lighting looks a little bit overcast, suddenly his skin gets shiny and looks almost grey/metallic instead of the warmer tan it usually is. Notice how the background environment doesn't change much, but his skin is dramatically different.
https://i.imgur.com/fGkHoqR.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/udvPI79.jpg
I'm particularly worried about this because even the current skintone doesn't behave well in lower-light conditions and now it'll look even worse most likely. Like come on, stop punishing folks for wanting to have a darker skinned character. :(
I use face 1 and the new eyebrows look awful. They are completely blonde now with a smudge underneath. It's an ugly downgrade. :(
https://i.postimg.cc/0NdyF8X1/DTbench-Eyebrows.png
I would not say, that the eyebrows are awful. ;) Before, they were dark with smudge, now they are blonde with smudge. But the real problem is the smudge. I guess, they cannot remove it because it is in the base texture.
Cheers
Hi! I just wanted to add onto this.
I don't play Elezen, currently, but I was interested in seeing how an Elezen of my character would look.
However, despite the SAME COLOR SETTINGS as my Miqo'te, the colors are just flat-out different.
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachmen...60c4455c5b88a&
Note that every single example in this uses the same two colors according to the RGB values.
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachmen...e03b50a4e079e&
This has lead to an odd discrepancy where in the benchmark, despite my Miqo'te having a vibrant, beautiful purple, the Elezen has an odd grey-like color. I've attached a few examples of in-benchmark screenshots.

I have one (1) complaint about male elezen in 7.0
As a Nose 2 enjoyer, I couldn't help but notice to my dismay, that the bump has been sanded down and the shape made overall less pointy.
Below I illustrate current and new nose 2:
https://i.ibb.co/z69SfRK/nose1.jpghttps://i.ibb.co/wykdL2T/nose2.jpg
Also the shape of the front of the nose has been made more rounder and less pointy overall, the top plane used to be more of a triangle and is now more rectangular:
https://i.ibb.co/QFmf49r/nose3.jpghttps://i.ibb.co/CPThRJP/nose4.jpg
As the slight nose bump especially is a big charm point for this nose shape, I implore you to please consider restoring it back into the 6.X version. His big pointy schnozzle is precious to me. As much as I love the new ears, I want to love his new nose as well, but it has lost much of its character in the update.
Thank you for your consideration.
this has actually always been a thing, elezen just have more desaturated hair colors for some reason. personally, i like it, and was really worried theyd change it- which would have turned my elezen's soft sandy brown hair carrot orange, which is what the same color is on other races.
So to summarise most of the problems I've seen here and around the boards for Elezen so far:
- Faces are too rounded and have lost definition of chins and cheekbones
- Darker skin tones look waxy and strange
- Duskwood have been drawn using Wildwood face textures, giving them dark eye circles that they didn't have before
- Some lips have completely changed shape
- Some lips have been turned up at the corners creating a 'smiling' effect that wasn't there before
- Some lips have an odd stripe of light added above them
- Some noses have been made straighter, narrower and less pointy
- Some eyes have changed shape
- Lack of eye highlights is causing a dead look in the eyes
- Eyelashes are longer and thicker, changing the visible shape of eyes and also contributing to the dead eye look by covering any highlights that may be there
- Facial expressions and 'feeling' of many characters have changed significantly due to these changes in features
Those changes are propably bugfixes due wrong normal maps for Elezen faces. Normal maps are used for structure simulation. I guess, the players got used to the wrong normal maps or built their character around them. And with the fixes their character looks different. And yes, it happens relatively often, that players start to like some bugs in games if the bugs stay long enough.
Cheers
I know it's a century year old argument at this point, but I'd really love to see some skeleton fix for Elezen with the graphical update. Reducing shoulder and neck width while increasing overall headsize just a little would work wonders. I'm fully aware Elezen aren't supposed to have human proportions, but that does not mean they should look "off".
Aside from that, Duskies still don't have dyeable earrings and eyeliner options...
Making a different decision at the initial design stage and changing that decision now are two very different matters, as this whole business is proving.
At this point, Elezen are lanky and relatively small-headed because they are tall overall. Changing it is what would make our existing characters look off.
