If it still was pre-abyssea without lvlcap.....I would go back to FFXI without a tiny bit of regret <.<

I'm excited for this new expansion, and will probably reactivate my FF11 content ID a few months prior to its release.
No matter what you personally think about FF11, the game is most likely a huge cash cow for SE. According to SE themselves, the game reached a peak of 2 million active characters last year. I think it is fair to assume that the average amount of characters per player is less than 5, which means the game "probably" has around 300k subscribers. That's a total income of ~50 million dollars a year from FF11. Now I'm not a game developer, but I doubt FF11 costs even close to 50 million dollars a year in server maintenance and developer salaries.
Because of that, I think it is a smart move to try to keep the game alive, and it seems like SE is of the same opinion.
But what this post really makes me think about is how obscenely much money Blizzard must be making off of WoW...
I may reactivate my xi account depending on what the jobs are... Hesitant to play post abyssea though. my char is still at 75
Ya, I just hope that SE learns from their methods of releasing said content from the expansion pack. I definitely don't want to see a repeat of WOTG in which they stretch out the expansion for years just to force people to keep paying so that they can see the ending of the story. I hope they'll roll out all the content in a year story wise so you aren't left waiting 2-5yrs to see what the ending of the story is.
Well the good thing about Abyssea is that it lets you burn through 75-99 in a matter of days. The limit break quests are gonna be what's slowing you down, not the grinding. Not to mention, you make a decent amount of gil just by leveling there too.
Abyssea today is basically just a rocket launcher. Insert low level character, press fire, propel character to level cap.
Wow, had been hoping for Geomancer since like when everybody was speculating the new jobs for ToAU...
That was, what- 5 years ago-ish?
Already moved on from FFXI. It's a little too late here.
Besides, sounding like it isn't as topography-based as I envisioned.
It's more of a mix of Calculator and Geomancer, so it's still pretty topographical but not completely sadly due to the way XI itself works, but it does get exclusive elemental spells based on region, but realistically we only know that it's a technical class to play and positioning matters heavily.
That was a really unimpressive trailer lol... Why would they even show it if they had so little to actually show. 1 new city and a couple reskinned zones? They didn't even show any actual new job stuff lol...
Judging by how little of anything that trailer showed I'd imagine that expansion is still in very very early development.
Im looking forward to it, however combat will still be terrible unless you're war sam whm blm (and maybe the new jobs till nerfs hit). And yah a storyline every 2-3 years will kill it for me.
Oh also its not like you have to marry a game, play one for a month or two harder than the other then switch back.
As a former XI player i can't say this has me too interested. While new expansions are always exciting, IMO Treasures of Aht Urghan was the last GOOD expansion. Wings of The Goddess was a Boxed expansion with Campaign on it. That was it for like 6 months, even then it took over a year to get the story out. The 3 mini expansions played out more like fanfictions rather than canon story arcs. Abyssea had potential that completely eliminated some of the base gameplay that made FFXI great (i.e parties). What really killed the experience for me, was that with so many story hooks left by ToAU and WOTG about the expanded world (The Far East, The Western continent, the Mithran Homeland) We got 4 expansions in a row that had NOTHING to do with any of that.
I think that adding Geomancer is cool, but it won't be the same because no one is going to learn the ins and outs of the job like in the old days. People are gonna plop a Geomancer in Abyssea and power level it to 99. 2 Weeks will be spent on data mining before the "accepted" way to play it will be posted up, and it'll probably being the new loldrg/lolpup.
Sorry to rant. Some my best gaming experiences ever were on XI. It's why I'm a XIV player now. But the time to let it go has been well past due. I'm looking forward to 2.0, and the possible new jobs, races, areas and experiences it's about to bring.
P.S: Geomancer WOULD make since in XIV due to the positional battle system. But I'd take XI's Dancer over Geomancer any day. Also, Aren't we supposed to be getting Musketeer?
Well it's not that they are worried about XIV tanking with 2.0. There is very little chance of that, and I think they know this.
It is simply that all of the money they invested into developing XIV version 1.0 was pretty much a complete waste. They are now having to re-develop this game almost entirely, for which the cost would be huge. Taking that into consideration they aren't really making money off XIV at this point.
XI is their money maker, so naturally they are going to want to keep it going longer now, since the money they are taking in from XIV subscriptions at this point would be basically just funding the development of 2.0.
All in all, I think it's great though. It makes sense for them to do this from a business standpoint, and also it is great to see them revitalize XI for all of the fans still playing, and even for new MMO players looking for somewhere to go.
Very true...theu could show a lot there...they could show anything...but they prefered not showing a thing. :/
I guess they think 2 artworks from Yoshitaka Amano are more appealing than gameplay... ; ;
Luckly we have more Vanafest tonight for the extra info the trailer never had! ^^

I'm sorry FFXI......
Which is very different from facing a specific direction when casting stuff. That sort of thing doesn't play well with having to move around to avoid things, which I hope we continue to get more of as the game grows and ages. I may concede if the developers are planning to add strafing, but even then I'd have a hard time seeing it be useful. It just sounds like a horrible gimmick.
I was excited about this expansion until I remembered that Abyssea still exists. Unless some of these zones allow for leveling to 99 in a traditional manner, I just couldn't care any less about playing this expansion. That said, I'm excited that they're still willing to support this game with another expansion, no one saw this coming.
People keep bashing FFXI but the funny part is the combat is still more responsive then FFXIV is in its current state.
I just recently got back into FFXI and I figured I would hate it with all the changes over the past couple years... While I do sort of miss the old game, it's still just as addicting as I remember. That video was pretty cheesy and makes the game look even more dated than it actually is, but I'm pretty excited about this :)
I play Dragoon in XIV, and I actually really like the positional aspects of the combo system. (I also think they will work much better if the servers become more responsive in 2.0.)
With that said, I can think of two reasons why a positional mage might not be fun to play.
1) As a ranged class, the arc that you have to move in to change positions is much larger. Circling a mob would take a much longer time, and if the mob changes directions a lot, you wouldn't be able to keep up.
2) Casting spells takes a lot longer than triggering a weaponskill. Again, if the mob changes direction as you casting bar fills, you're out of luck.
I'm not arguing that Geomancer won't be fun, as we know way too little about the job at this point to know one way or the other. I'm sure there are a lot of creative things they could do with it. However, there are some design hurdles that would need to be overcome in order to make a positional mage fun to play.
I always thought of a trailer as of something that is supposed to make you want to play the game. This trailer just had a few art drawings, a bunch of empty words and a person running through some empty zones. Zones that seemed so old, that even at start of FFXI, it would have seemed outdated.
If the new FFXIV trailer is like that too, it would be a poor start of FFXIV 2.0
I find that ironic after people on both forums told SE to release even concept videos of in development stuff. Considering they added the files on test server..1 maybe 2 weeks ago? It's clear they're only in conceptual stage and wanted to show that there will be an expansion xD
As much as I loved FFXI (and Geomancer too), I don't think I'll go back. I never even reached lvl 75 after years of playing it, because I was too casual. FFXIV is way more forgiving in that aspect, so I'll stay where I am.
It's intriguing. I'll probably resub to explore the new lands but I don't think I'll be captivated any more.
Geomancer is cool though, really surprised they managed to make that job uniquely different.
Well, FF11 is more casual friendly now than it has ever been. Leveling up and meriting is effortless, you can get "decent" gear with just 2-3 people joining you. Don't even have to grind for money anymore, cause there is so much easily available r/e gear, and leveling is too casual for people to even care about your gear being 20 levels too low.
Rune Fencer, the 2nd new FFXI job.
Wonder if it's all a psyche, I mean they did promise us Judgemaster back when A Shanotto Ascension Episode came out about 3-4 years ago. Then again they also said it would divulge into the true Mitheran homeland with that episode and that was nothing but disappointment, just watch they'll turn around and say PS2 limitations and just rehash more zones or something.
the 2nd job is called Rune Fencer.
>implying FFXIV's Arcanist works anything like Rune Fencer
>implying the FFXI team and the FFXIV team are the same team
>implying the FFXIV team has the budget and staffing to crank out content at the same rate as the XI team
>implying creating a new class and abilities and gear and lore, then balancing said class and abilities and gear and lore isn't the hardest single thing for a dev team to do
