Honestly, I was taken out of the plot of the final zone when you get there and Thancred is dead and literally no one cares except for a few lines from Urianger. Like, goddamn.

The fact that literally all of the Scions die in this moment just only served to hammer in how temporary it was going to be, especially when Y'shtola, notorious plot armor wearer that she is, outright says "By the way, your plot device can probably bring us back. But don't do it at the end of this zone. ;)", which is later followed by Alphinaud making a similar remark!

Also, it's really weird to me that G'raha has this really great speech to the Omicron guy about helping him see through his malaise and feelings of being unable to move on, while Y'shtola and Estinien are kinda just like "Ehh, who cares?" to the people they talk to, which somehow still fixes things.

-Reaper and sage are nowehere near as awesome as people make them out to be
-The low end of the playerbase is too lazy and having certain duties be gatekeepers for skill/effort levels would be good for the game
-the job team,, battle design team and a lot of the savage/ultimate raiding parts of the playerbase has an unhealthy obsession with balance, scripted perfection and dps over everything else
-Dungeons suck and always have done bar a handful of exceptions
-Hrothgar should not have been designed until viera were completed
-SE needs some fresh blood in some of its teams focused on adding content, challenge and mechanics rather than trimming/simplifying/nerfing

People who think that 'main character death = well made story' and 'no main character death = garbage story' (I am including the rest of the scions in this main character category) need to acknowledge that game of thrones is not the end all of story writing.

This reminds me of something: I don't really care for the Phase 1 music of the final boss theme of Endwalker. It feels like a "final boss theme compilation" rather than a song that actually fits a fight against Meteion. I've seen some people say "Well, Gaius is on our side now and we got here with Estinien's help and Zenos and Emet-Selch helped us in this zone", and that's well and good, but this is Meteion's fight. Imagine if Hades' final boss theme was just a mash-up of Shadowbringers area themes to convey all of the people we helped on the way there. I'd prefer something that actually spoke of Meteion as a character as opposed to "Remember all of these things?". Also, if it was going to be a compilation final boss theme, why isn't Rise of the White Raven in there?

The Phase 2 music is fine, though, I think, but that's more of the Warrior of Light's second wind music.

Super-Hot Take: Mentor hate is over exaggerated, and the community makes mentors seem worse than they really are. They also put incredibly unrealistic expectations upon mentors in an unpaid volunteered role. I feel like a lot mentor hate is falsely bias opinions influencing each other and because we act like mentor hate is "The cool thing to do". I see it more as people wanting to take part in schadenfreude and insult people in any way they can think of solely because they do not like them as a person. Are there bad mentors? Absolutely. There are bad sprouts to but this is always overlooked, ignored, even excused and treated as a non-issue just because they aren't the one with a crown. I find new players are often conditioned to hate mentors' way before they know what a mentor is and taught that they aren't doing their "job" by their friends and peers because its a meme to hate.

PS: There is also always this weird mentality of people pointing out sprouts make better mentors than mentors do on occasion but fail to realize that it could be a mentor on an alt. If a sprout knows the game better than the mentor does, then I find it highly probable that they are infact a mentor on an alt. I can't imagine a genuine true sprout that is knowledgeable of the game's inner mechanisms and knowingly and willfully being in the Novice Network if they weren't there to be a mentor in the first place. Yet somehow nobody in the community ever seems to consider this possibility when they start to insult mentors.

Personally, I feel like you don't need character death to tell a good story. At the same time, I feel like XIV has this very noteworthy habit where it 'kills' its characters, only to be like "Oh, just kidding, they're still alive" a while later. Sometimes the execution is a bit odd, like Thancred seemingly falling over dead after the fight with Ran'jit only to be fine five minutes later, but I get the idea that was being gone for there: if Thancred dies, that kind of distracts from Ryne's decision in the moment, and she'd probably lose a lot of confidence over the fact that he just died on the way to her making her choice. Additionally, almost dying and not saying what he needed to put things into perspective and that's why he opens up to Ryne a lot more after that moment. I might find the way the scene played out a little odd, but I think the idea behind it is fine enough.

But then you have other moments where it feels a bit awkward.

I didn't want Nanamo to die at the end of ARR, for example. She looks like she's suffering immensely and she'd be dying at the fairly young age of 21 to boot. But when ARR ends with her poisoned and choking to death onscreen because of political backstabbing and tries to use this as a moment that has a lot of weight (fueling the Warrior of Light's inner Dark Knight, messing up Thancred's aether permanently, making Y'shtola blind, actually killing off Minfilia, setting up the events that lead to Shinryu, etc.), only to then go "Oh, no, actually she was still alive and the Scions weren't going to be accused of any wrongdoing. It was all just a wacky misunderstanding that got out of hand when Raubahn decided to cut a guy in half, haha.", that's when I start to get annoyed.

The design is flawed, first of all the fact that you get a crown and rewards just makes it so people farm it to feel cool about it, secondly you don't do anything you just play at a decent level or tank and people will upvote you it's not like you were really helpful or a MENTOR you could literally exchange it for the word "experienced".

WHM is the worst healer to pick up for someone new to healing.

Endwalker is the worst expansion this game has had so far. I didn't think it was possible, but you mad lads topped Stormblood.

Also before people call for my head I would still give the story of the expansion like a 6/10 even if the actual gameplay meat of it was a 2/10.

Bonus hot take the last zone has more padding than a 14 year old girls bra.

It shouldn't really be a hot take at all, but it's pretty simple:
If you're not enjoying the game, just stop playing it.

Just because you've built your life around playing a video game for the last 7,8, etc. years, and/or just because you used to like it, doesn't mean you still do and doesn't mean you have to keep subjecting yourself to it. It's okay to just walk away and find something else to do with your time that you will actually enjoy instead of continuing to mentally and financially handcuff yourself to something you clearly don't. I mean, take a step back and have a neutral third party look over your post history and see what they have to say.

Viera and Hrothgar are both too underdeveloped and shouldn't have been made at all considering the state they are in.

I sincerely hope that after femhroths come out they will stop adding new races for a while and instead overhaul character customization for everyone, because it frankly is pretty garbage all things considered.

Hunting culture is better and more accessible than it used to be because of the new tools we have and cross server hunting. I don't have to know a guy who knows a guy who can tell me about spawn windows, because the public website for it is trolled by people who report false kill times and want to keep the timers to themselves so that no one spawns anything when they are offline. Now I can just open a website with accurate info and hop to any server to try and spawn something. The exclusivity is gone and it's great.

Oh definitely. I just see many conflating the two, when Fandaniel as he is now is a result of the sundering, and Hermes was a whole with more emotions beyond apathy and hypocritical nihilism. It sucks because it doesn't take more than a surface viewing to notice the differences and paint a picture of what happened.

Here's a real hot take. The community was better during HW and has only gotten worse thanks to level/story skips, homogenizing classes to the point of losing their uniqueness, and SE leaning hard on the cash shop in general. At this point just slap a cash shop button on the UI so I can hide it. The game feels more like a single player game with multiplayer aspects built in and I prefer it that way considering people tend to get upset at really dumb things. Seeing people get elitist in a CT run was funny at best and confusing at worst. This isn't a savage run, who cares if you have to spend a little longer on boss fights because some are not synced?

Let's be honest, if there wasn't a shiny mount (a two seater at that) attached to the crown would there really be that many mentors out there? Not saying all crowns are bad but a lot tend to only be there for the reward, not realizing that they actually have to explain things to new people who may or may not be familiar with MMOs.

None of the expansions have come close to how amazing Heavensward was. It was peak story and peak gameplay.

That's my biggest issue with EW. It just goes too far with the edge of the universe stuff. Desacralizes the world in my opinion.

Hot take : there's a terrible lack of hard solo content. Bozja is inconvenient and HoH is old now. You can't log in and do a quick, hard thing in this game. :(

My only issue with the edge of the universe thing is how we got there, a literal spaceship felt a bit too sci-fi imo.
I get that crazy technology exists in the setting but I think it was a bit too far for the current timeline, I didn't like the teleportation device to the moon either it's not that it doesn't make sense it just felt a bit cheesy.
I wish it had just been magic instead.
I can kinda accept it because we'd just have another way if it wasn't a spaceship but it was more something I tried to ignore rather than something I liked.
Same with the moon being essentially a spaceship too, quite frankly I don't even think there was a point to the existence of the Loporrits and the whole moon thing.

I think it would've been better if we didn't have a safety net, even if it obviously wouldn't end in disaster because there will be more expansions and they won't just destroy the whole planet I still think it was a waste of time and detracted a bit.
The Loporrits were funny and all but they really didn't need to exist and I think their existence only detracted from the overall plot and the tension.

Accessible and easier jobs are not a bad thing and not everything needs to be hyper complex, but the obsession with "balance" has made entire roles or jobs feel like skins of each other rather than varied and different gameplay experiences.
Defending jobs not being fun in normal mode content by saying "you should play Savage if you want [x] to be fun" is a poor excuse to defend bad job design and is bad for the long term future of the game, because you have to experience almost all of the normal mode content during the main story quest while you only get 12 Savage fights an expac to play as intended.

I'm gonna take a guess but is it because it has too many healing tools? Just feels like that too me like I have a way too big of a safety net to the point where I'm starting to wonder if SE put those for healers who do savage/ex? There's no way the regular content needs that much healing, even in expert. If that's not the reason, lemme know why. I'm curious

- The housing demolition timer should be removed completely.
- Put personal parsers into the game.
- Some healer mains like to overblow how hard their role actually is.
- High damage parse as a healer is not impressive if it's at the expense of your co healer. 3 buttons you have to press, big deal.
- Tanks set the pace of the dungeon. Healers have a say on the pace, and tank can adjust as needed. Communication between tank and healer is important. DPS eat crayons and glue.

This isn't really a Hot Take, but some types of people like to pretend it is...so ll say it.

FFXIV is not Free of Criticism.
It has problems like anything and everything else in the world - Perfection is an Illusion - There is always a Flaw.
And Everybody has the right of Opinion and the right to point out these flaws and problems. They Are Valid

On the Flip side, people with different experiences and thoughts and Opinions are Valid as well. They may like something you dont like, or they might hate something you Love. Everybody is different.
So Just because somebody disagrees with you, it doesn't mean your thoughts and opinions are Invalid, it just means they are different.
This is Fine. This is Normal.
And Both sides need to stop getting into fights and crying Foul just because people disagree with them
