right here. this is how i feel about my bunkies. i do not want them to go away. just fix the pet and sum will feel good. the delay is awful at times. i wonder if we get beast tamer as a limited job if their pets will feel as awkward?

FF11's weren't as big nor as imposing as previous FF games (they were "better-looking" than Egis, though).
Just saying.
Anyways, and as far as FF14 is concerned, Egis are an integral part of SMN's identity.
Just like cards are for AST or faeries for SCH.
So those aren't going anywhere.
If anything, it's far more likely that we'll get more Trances/Demi-Summons in the future.
I know the community here is pretty much divided (and passionate about it) when it comes to the SMN going away from being a "pet" job. I don't mind the Egis (and was certainly excited for egi glams before), but if they can't fix the AI code behind pets and keep pushing them to be some sort of "glorified dot" + clunky ghosting actions, then honestly I'd agree with getting rid of them as a job gameplay feature.
Okay, but what does that mean? We already removed Auto play and are required to command them to attack. It would be hard to move them around in raids to dodge AoE all the while move yourself around too.
Maybe it's different on SCH but nine times out of ten, the ghosting actions is due to the player pushing the command button while the pet is in motion. I agree it suck when it "consumes" the action but doesn't perform it but at the same time I know not to do that. We are talking SMN but let's be real, if you remove Fairy from SCH what's the point of playing SCH over say Barrier AST or Sage? Removing key "gimmicks" from jobs is always a bad idea.
Funny thing is I can't remember a single time where the fairy ghosted abilities back in Stormblood, before they "improved" the AI. Sure it would sometimes take a lot longer than it should to execute abilities but that was offset by those abilities being independent from yourself.
Personally if they stick to the current way we use our Egi's I'd prefer if their egi skills were on their own GCD system or become oGCDs again so the Summoner can attack at the same time.
And to make Egi's more relevant they need to have more then 2 abilities. Which I think people have been wanting for a while.
Furthermore since the Egi attacks becomes dead buttons during Bahamut/Phoenix trances I feel they should turn into different summon attacks during that time.
I very much dislike relying on casting a spell and waiting for that 0.5s delayed Wyrmwave to come out. It's even worse when the summon has to move and stop before it throws an attack out. Summoning them in a fixed position would be good overall since they are invincible anyway.
Egi attacks into the Egi ultimate like say Crimson Assault into Inferno feels good. I'd like more of that.
Right now SMN just feels slow and clunky.
Which now that I think about why do Bahamut and Phoenix not have auto attacks like the other Egi's do?
I think you're right about the identity thing... But then, what is the point of leaving the gimmick as it is if it's flawed? Sage being a brand new job - and the developers having experience so far - will probably come with a very smooth gameplay with interesting mechanics, much like DNC or GNB did. If they leave SCH as it is now, there's gonna be an even bigger exodus to what is considered the most problematic healer atm.
I don't have hopes for them to improve their game codes to fix those flaws, unless this is a big highlight for the Fanfest.
I mained Summoner back in ARR, but have only returned to the game last year... I must say, its interesting how things have not changed! Many of the same complaints people made back in 2015 seem to still be here. Ah, nostalgia…
I cannot really comment on what Summoner is like now (Started a fresh character, only just got Summoner to level 66.) but honestly, I am really enjoying it, and like what I have seen in regards to endgame stuff like Egi-Bahamut etc. It certainly feels like some fat needs trimming though, perhaps making the Bahamut/Phoenix stage a bit less of a set up/more simple and tweaking the Egi assults too? The DoT system could use a rework perhaps.
I will say, I do not think we will ever get a FF11 style summon (The complaint I mostly see about the job) nor should we. They are different games, and I feel it fits the lore more that we are not summoning huge primal and having them do all the work. We are meant to be using a stolen aspect of the Primals power, after all. Do I think the look of the summons could use a re-work? For sure! At the very least, they should add some more Egi-Glams. How long have they been in the game now? I would have expected more then just the Carbys. Could be a way to add in more Summons (Like changing the Garuda Egi to a Shiva one, etc)
If Yoshi doesn't want to add a slew of new skills to accommodate the 3 summon types he should be adding in unlockable Egi glamours for each Eikon/Esper trial we complete or make them Savage/Extreme rewards akin to Tank mounts.
People have been asking for Ramuh egi and Sephirot Egi for a while.
If time can be put in for Carbuncle there is no reason why the others can't be implemented as well.
-----------------------
As for FF11 summons. We don't want that kind of gameplay where you call down the summon and it goes on a absurd CD for the whole server or has severe costs.
What I think players want is the aesthetic of summoning a scaled down summon beast to fight with akin to FFX style summoning. Instead of what we got.
Personally Carbuncle looks leagues better then Ifrit/Garuda/Titan and I won't be using them.
As for gameplay changes I do feel Egi assaults need another look at as well as hpw Bahamut/Phoenix Function.
Well I personally have no issues with Egi Assaults "ghosting", but I also don't use them while moving or while the Egi is out of range. I also make sure to summon Egi in the middle of the party before I use Devotion. When I use Bahamut/Phoenix I do my best not to move around much, sucks sometimes but that is where "know the fight" comes into play. Do I think changes need to be made, yep and have suggested as such on many other threads.
I would love to see new skills but honestly I'm scratching my head as to what. I guess if I could I would make the following Egi changes.
- Divide Egi into two categories; Single Target and AoE attacks. This would give devs the option to either make an Egi Glamour into ST or AoE and help stream line the system. Ifrit, Titan, Shiva would be ST and Garuda, Leviathan, Ramuh would be AoE. I would love to see more at the launch of 6.0 but I would be happy with just these 6. Also yea, redesign current Egi to be slightly bigger, Hume, and better appearance like people want. In fact they don't even need to look like the FFXIV primals but designed with in the same vein of the summon.
- The "tank" Egi would be removed and replaced with a summon animation spell that cast the barrier on the player. Also change Devotion into a summon animation spell cast rather then Egi. Sucks to be locked out of the spell during Demi Phase.
- Change Egi Assualts to use Aetherflow stacks rather than current system. Command Egi, Egi uses stack when it performs the ability, stack consumed. Fester and PainFlare would just be a shared cooldown. Honestly I would like to see a change where Fester extends current SMN DoTs and Painflare / Ruin IV be upgrade spells during DWT.
- As for Egi Assaults... I would say Melee needs a gap closer, one 8 or 15 sec DoT, and one heavy hitter. AoE would be AoE attack, AoE DoT, and Ground effect with shorter duration. Make it a ability rather spells again with a 2.5s cooldown. Hate the situation where all you have is a downdraft charged and about to summon Bahamut/Phoenix. Just a waste. Speaking on that, make Egi Enkindle a straight Burst Attack, no DoTs or area effects.
- Need to increase Egi and Demi speed to 1.5 rather than just 1.0. Hate to have them trail behind.
So this is coming from the viewpoint of an absolute smooth brain DRG main. But doesn't SMN feel like it's about to burst with how much it's getting? Like something is gotta give with it right? DoT management, Pet Management, the longest rotation on a class, and the highest penalty for error margin on a dps. So if the dev team decided to rebuild the class by scrapping something, what would mains' of SMN be the most comfortable losing? From my PoV I feel like DoT is a no Brain to scrap and rework the job from there no?
Having gone back to playing SMN, which is by no means a main for me, I feel like they should do away with the dots and just add more egi attack skills. It feels more thematic to be attacking through your summon.
And yes, the Egi models are well overdue for an upgrade.
Some people like a "busy" job which is why the play it. The biggest complaint from main SMN isn't all the stuff, just that it doesn't really flow well together like it could. DoT management is easy because most of the time you use Tri-D to apply and maybe one hard cast of Miasma/Bio during the rotation. Also DoT allow you more pet control because you don't have to worry about background DPS as much, set it and forget it for 30s. Another thing to consider is that Egi Assault share 2.5s cooldown timer with spells so it you can either cast a EgA or Ruin; if you want more of one you have to do less of the other.
Ideally it should be a 50%, 35% 15% split between damage sources. Pets (Egi & Demi) would be 50%, Ruin/Spells 35%, DoTs 15%. Currently DoT at about 15%, pets are 30%, Ruin 3/4 being 25%, and the rest spells/abilities (Fester, BoP, FoF, Tri-D, ED, etc).
Oh and yea, SMN is my go too dungeon job because of all the yummy AoE damage. Don't ruin that for me ><
What if... plot twist... the new Maiming job is a dot focused one and those elements will move from SMN the way DNC swooped in and BRD lost a lot of support skills.
Then either SMN will complain about losing DoTs or the die hard "insert new job" will complain because they didn't want it to be a DoT job XD
But's it fair to remember BRD got a good amount of there support skills back, mainly the song bonuses. BRDs were pissed and rightfully so.
If the class design is as typical as I think it will be the new melee dps will have at least 1 DoT just like the rest of the melee classes.
Summoner is hilariously awkward.
1-50: Your a class that wants to have a focus on some dots, a bunch of pet stuff, oh and ruin spells to go with your dots.
50-60: You stopped caring about your summons and went all in on trying to imitate black mage.
60-70: You realized your pets existed again, used them to fuel your ruin spells, and you finally figured out how to establish a connection with a new summon of bahamut
70-80: "I'm sure Alphinaud and Alisaie won't mind if I get an egi of Phoenix."
There was an interesting interview done by Mr Happy with Yoshida and in that conversation he brought up Summoner, specifically Egi-glamour. I thought Yoshi's answer was very interesting for what's to come.
His answer: "Currently summoner as a job is reaching somewhat of a breaking point when it comes to the overall play mechanics, so we've halted work on Egi glamour for the time being in order to shift focus. There is a reason behind this, but we can't share the details with you at the moment. When the time comes, I'll be sure to properly share that information with everyone."
That could mean a lot of things, such as either significant changes to the way egis work to outright removal of them. What do you guys think it could mean? No theory is too crackpot.
Guess we will find out in a few weeks then. For all we know we could become Terra Branford and become a Primal temporarily in a true trance mode.
Or maybe they will make Titan Egi great again, evolve into Sephirot Egi and out tank all the tanks.
I'm glad they halted work on glamour since ultimately it does very little for the job.
Honestly, I'm humbled the devs have taking my ideas and put them in the game. But at the same time having Egi Glamour kicked down the road again is frustrating because I know Egi Design has been a key topic with the SMN community since Beta. It's long past time this gets address.
I think they need to be more transparent on their plans for Egi in general and should provide a roadmap for summoners.
There is really no excuse for not having Ramuh/Shiva/Levi glams.
If you have time for making minions of every Eikon out there there is not much reason we don't have these egi's by now.
Sephirot Egi's in the Fiend fight and the little Ramuh's in Ramuh are big offenders.
I would not be happy for summoners if all the new stuff for egi's just turns out to be a Silver and Black Carbuncle.
Could be a rework(/pruning) of abilities.
Although personally I would prefer if they more leaned into older interpretations of what made a summoner than an actual pet class. That being: The summoner calls forth their summon. Their summon does a signature attack. The summon then leaves.
To give an idea of how this could be feasible in 14, imagine blue mage for a moment. Imagine as the blue mage imitates the physical motion of titan's mountain buster as though they were flipping a table, they also briefly called forth a semi-transparent form of titan who is also performing the same physical motion. After the animation ends, the 'phantom' titan leaves.
The only problem with blue mage is actually needing to go out and hunt for each individual spell. But if you had a job with a fixed set of abilities learned at a fixed levels, and implementing the aformentioned 'phantom' to go with the abilities, I think it would be closer to what the summoner fantasy is.
Summoner feels like Summoner during Bahamut and Phoenix. Blue Mage has usable summon attacks at the press of the button that makes Summoners jealous. Whipping out Ramuh's staff is the most hype crap you'll ever see.
Honestly I don't even mind Summoner where it is right now. Aesthetically I think they've nailed it, and it doesn't need any major changes for 6.0. Blue Mage just looks like a better polished mess to me comparatively speaking, and that's simply what I expect out of that job.
However when it comes to Summoner's mechanics, I'm torn. Everyone wants pet AI to change, that's frankly a given, and my interpretation of the interview is that's likely what is getting re-tuned. I'm hoping they don't revert to any prior iteration of pets as what we currently have is the most consistent it's ever been but I acknowledge that it has variable delay, so they should focus on tuning up the consistency of what is there now across all ping levels, and ideally make the next version's mechanics scalable to future expansions. I think the flow of the current rotation works apart from some minor hiccups. Egi aren't engaging, but they make Demi-Egi feel distinct. Demi are frustrating and Bahamut in particular feels lackluster, but they make me appreciate what Egi get right, and I don't think Bahamut needs much of a push to be made more fun.
Where I want their focus to go is mostly on merging and trimming actions that are already context sensitive and similar, which necessitates that they alter the overall structure of Summoner's levelling curve to make better use of what they have now. The only major hope I have is that they bring back Aetherflow to Arcanist. I don't want anything else from pre-Shadowbringers Summoner, though if they wanted to they could bring back Spur if they wanted to give us Trance in ARR. The only reason I want Aetherflow is so it can fill the role that Trance and Energy Drain/Siphon currently do: act as a bridge in the rotation and grant us resources (Aetherflow Stacks, Trance access, ideally Enkindle/Deathflare resources as well with this overhaul) that we can use for our Demi-Burst phase. That is essentially what it did in those prior expansions to begin with. As long as they don't try to jam in Aethertrail or lockout nonsense with it I think the job would be fine with no major changes to the Heavensward through Shadowbringers part of its progression curve, though under the hood many of those actions would no longer be assigned to a hotbar.
The obvious merges are Enkindle with Deathflare and Enkindle Bahamut/Phoenix, plus Dreadwyrm Trance and Summon Bahamut. For trims retooling Energy Drain/Siphon as ARR-only versions of Fester/Painflare works perfectly. Ideally Egi Assault and Fester would be made into Summoner-exclusive actions. Given how Scholars miss Bane I think moving it and Ruin II down to pre-30 Summoner while moving Egi Assault and Fester up is fair, since they could then get a Scholar-exclusive version of Bane when they unlock Scholar without it feeling too weird (imo it would upgrade into Deployment Tactics, which would retain the Bane effect when used on enemies. It would balance out a longer cooldown with less damage falloff as well spread Chain Stratagem). That would eliminate some confusion during that section of the job change, and would allow Scholar to get Energy Drain and Aetherflow at low levels again.
As for what I'd like to see for Egi abilities? Probably move Titan Shield to a personal defensive cooldown and give Titan Egi another attack. I honestly miss it being an oGCD, and I don't think it's too much of an issue to add it at a 120s cooldown ala Manaward, or to give Garuda/Ifrit animations (Hell they could reuse the old Contagion/Radiant Shield particles with some tweaking). If not that, then maybe some kind of teleportation ability that doubles as a way to get the Egi to charge in to the boss. Basically we'd dash to our pet's current position, then either throw it or have it swoop to the center of the boss. It'd probably be an instant-cast GCD just to make it as consistent as the Egi Assaults.
Any other theoretical Egi suggestions depend on what they do to fix Enkindle with the merger. Ideally they'd shorten the cooldown to 5s so it can be shared across Bahamut/Phoenix. It doesn't affect Deathflare at all, but something else would have to fill in how we access it with Egi, or Summoner could get Trance and it in ARR with Spur (the most boring but effective option).
Demi-wise make Bahamut distinct from Phoenix by giving it a trait that enhances Fester/Painflare and gives them new animations. I'd like to see us have actual Akh Morn spam and I'm okay reusing or retuning assets to give us that. I would expect us to get more Demis in the future, but it can wait till 7.0 if they follow through properly on upgrading pet AI and making Egi into engaging filler for 6.0.
Oh, and please give Tri-Disaster charges and a lower cooldown instead of the reset mechanic and make us cast Devotion on our Egi or Demi instead of ordering our Egi to cast it and getting screwed in the Demi window. No other nonsense required. Those abilities will work better if they're completely isolated from interacting with the rest of Summoner's toolkit.
Mr. Happy put out a video with a brief interview with YoshiP and the topic of Egi glam was asked.
Naoki Yoshida:
Currently summoner as a job is reaching somewhat of a breaking point when it comes to the overall play mechanics, so we’ve halted work on Egi glamour for the time being in order to shift focus. There is a reason behind this, but we can’t share the details with you at the moment. When the time comes, I’ll be sure to properly share that information with everyone.
I mean... I've been saying this (and got flamed for it) for quite a while now, that they didn't shed any news on the topic like an ETA because they are reworking - heavily - SMN, and implementing a glamour system would be wasted work if 1 expansion later everything changed.
This statement near-confirms this. Not saying that Egis are going to be removed altogether, but I really suspect the way they function will be nothing like they do nowadays..
I'm referring to suggestions and ideas I've posted in the past that have made it in game, you're welcome to search my name but be warned it goes back 10 years. I have no clue what they are playing and that is what has me worried. I know Egi design is a hot button because I've seen it posted over and over and over for the past 8 years.
I read this differently I guess. I'm taking it as they have too many "systems" on SMN that just didn't work in 5.0 like they hoped and I agree with that. You have Trance, Demi, Egi, DoT, Aetherflow... It was just too much to try and keeping piling one of top of the other which is what they tried to do. I don't think it was too much though, just not revamped to work well with each other. But's I'll say that if you remove pets from a pet job, the forums will erupt with very negative feedback.
I don't see SE giving us back proper pets. And probably will be further removed somehow. I wouldn't be surprised if the pet spells turned into bard songs, where for 15 seconds you go Ifrit mode and a couple of spells does something or procs something different. That fades and you go Titan for 15. And on and on. So SMN is probably forever dead to me, and only levels up because it is tied to SCH.
