Play what you want and don't listen to idiots who insult the cute best race.
People acting superior because they play/don't play a certain race *in a video game* never fails to make me laugh. And feel sad for those people, honestly.
About Lalafell specifically, they're the most obnoxious race when other people play them but when I'm a Lala I absolutely adore them. It's weird.
You need to not be so vulnerable to what strangers say.
Play what you like. Screw them.
I have now decided that Aylin Bielawska is mildly racist against Lalafel, as a character trait that can someday develop and reverse itself, maybe.
You know, if I ever decide that RP is a thing.
But otherwise, in all seriousness, just play what you want. It's a game, so, if you have fun being "x," then be "x." Likewise, it may not be fun for someone else, or maybe they have their fun in the way that you find unsavory. As long as no one is dumping their fun forcefully on someone else, I think you should be able to let bygones be.
To be honest, there are more people who hate cat, lizzard and bunny race than lalafel race.
People just need to remember that outside of coop activities, you should play the game however you like and not give a single damn about what people think. Maybe if they start paying your monthly bill, they could have say.
This cannot be stressed enough because no I am not paying your sub, but you are not paying mine either, so purposefully wasting my time is more of a jerk move than 3-7 other ppl kicking you out of their party for whatever you think you are entitled to, or more often, not to do.
I war a Hyur Midlander and started playing a lala as a joke with an old fc and it just stuck with me. Even with all the repeated jokes, and negative viewpoints people pick on for some reason.
There are gonna be people like that for all of the races. We got jokes on neckbearded men playing catgirls, people who clearly have active baddragon accounts playing Hrothgar, masochists playing Female Elezen with that Shaggy run cycle.
Everyone is gonna be making those comments (sometimes playfully, other times not) especially considering the game is one big social experience. But never and I repeat NEVER let that you change from doing something you enjoy in it.
I've also switched back to a Catboi at times but Lalas are just so much fun to play as I always come back since it's the best. Not gonna let whatever people say dissuade me from that choice.
How can you actually "hate" a fictional race in a virtual fantasy world?
Absolutely. I know it's a much more personal game then others since we're interacting so much and progressing our characters but people do need to take a step back and realize that it's just a game. There's no crazy hidden agenda Yoshi-P is doing over Male Viera, people shouldn't be having identity crisis over the ranged job they play because of the Meta, and people enforcing too much of the real world in game because they wear their hearts on their sleeves.
I mean should we really be injecting real world thoughts into this game when ancient cave murals picture a higher being doing the FFXIV equivalent of an Inazuma kick on another?
Tell the critics to take a flying leap! Lalafell are awesome and appeal to many individuals. The little folk are my favorite race!
The people who "get" lalafell become part of a large family. You may think I'm kidding but it's true. You see a lalafell and you recognize a kindred soul.
Don't let anyone browbeat you to play what you don't want to play. Proudly post a screenshot in the Show your Lalafell thread.
You'll be welcomed into the lalafell community!
Claps! Adorable as ever.
With a flounder? I'd pay gold to see that.
I'm sorry to hear lalas were jerks to you. That is unacceptable and you are in the right to tell them off. I hope you reported them.
I would love to have you join the lalafell community.
Getting serious for a moment. Playing a lalafell helps me fight my bipolar depression. There is something about the race which delights me.
I can't help but to smile. Also, lalafell have some of the best emotes in the game!
Therse a few sides to this issue.
-If you consider lalafell children then theres other pressing issues here - such as the fact we then have a game with children getting into adult situations. And I dont only mean adult as in P**N, but also violence and other things. You know, getting blown up, frozen, falling to your death, carved up and spit out, etc. You cant be saying "Lalafell are children therefore people are perverts" without squaring away other aspects this position holds, like the violence issue. How many of the players who hate lalafells and call players who play them creepy are the very same who make jokes about cannibalism or violence.
- The game and its lore does not treat lalafell as children. Plain and simple. Argue what people might, they are canonically not children. You can argue about their design aspects and other things, sure, but that is ultimately just opinion that will vary from person to person. By the rules of the game and its established world, they arent children.
- Yes, there are perverts in the game who will sexualize lalafells. Denying that people like that dont exist is simply ignoring reality. That being said, just because people like that exist doesn't mean everyone is that way. It's literally saying an entire group of players is perverted cause an extreme subset play that race. Furthermore, if we want to get down to principles here, you can easily design some of the other races to appear under 18, resulting very much the same problem. Yet we let that slide cause subjective reasoning. If were gonna make this argument about children, then it better be applied across the board and not selectively.
- To further the above point, from my own observation the people who complain about the whole lalafell pervert thing are the same people who look for the most 'revealing' ERP-esque glamours they can find. So its very rich to be calling one section of the player base perverts simply because they play a certain race when theyre very explicitly sexualizing their own characters. Not to mention that it tells a lot about the person when their core view of lalafells is something sexual, where as the typical player plays them cause their cute, spunky, or just straight up different.
- Most important point: You do you. Who gives a damn what other people think. Ther'ye not you. If you wanna do scandalous things with your character, ok. Thats up to you. If you just want cutesy things, ok, thats up to you. There's a lot of super judgmental people who like to pass judgement on other players for some of the silliest things. It's one thing for people to have opinions, but its another to try and force your world view onto another player. If they call you a pervert for playing lalafell, just give em the bird and tell em to worry about their own character. It's no one's business why they choose to play a character or race. This last point is pretty much key to playing games in general. You want to have something set up in a certain way, who cares what other people think. Enjoy something your way and tell other people to buzz off.
I changed to lalafel on what was basically a bet. I was never much a fan of them, and I tend to ignore short races in every game because hit box and sight lines tend to always be worse the smaller you are.
But then you do the ninja airplane run, and you have the silliest and most expressive facial expressions around, and its like, oh, ok, this is kinda cute.
And now I ride a twitchy blue battlesteed and look cute while hitting things with giant swords.
FFXIV has the oddest community when it comes to roasting each other’s characters lol. For example, 90% of people make fun of anyone using a male miqote to be an ERPer. And a lot of people make fun of female midlanders and call them “generic” or “stupid dollface”. In my opinion, it’s entertaining, but I am sorry to hear about your experiences.
/shrug once in a while someone gets a stick up their butt about me playing a miqo'te but i usually just laugh it off because their lives must be so boring if they need to hate on someone for their pixels in a video game
I've had the cat boi thing said to me IRL once. I play with some real-life friends and acquaintances who I knew before I knew that they played FFXIV. Once I found out that they played too and were all in a FC together I moved servers to play with them. We were talking about our characters (main jobs, races, etc.) IRL before I made the transfer, and one of the acquaintances upon hearing that I played a Miqo'te immediately turned to me and said "Of course, you would play a cat boi" in a tone of voice that was clearly meant to be derisive. He's kind of that way with me anyway since we don't see eye to eye on a lot of things, so meh. It was just the ridiculousness of something usually done by in-game or forum keyboard warriors happening in RL that made it memorable. This was me at the time:

He hasn't mentioned it since.
Well, Lord Gegeruju played a part to give lalafell an image of perverts.
Tera, Blad and soul, a long list of mmo's out there with races that look more child like than lala's. Those people need to harass those game instead
Well i mean not going to lie I find lala's in bikini's / thongs weird or in panty hoses but that has more to do with how players dress them than the actual race itself. They are childish play like that and fine. Dress them up as a stripper and I find that weird. But I won't go out of my way to insult the person for that or make fun of them. I mean a Lalafel is great in a potroast with some garlic and thyme ;)
Well the problem with Lala generally is some of the body proportions are non functional. It's a little hard to explain but pretty much we take for granted that Shoulders are generally as broad as the hips or close to it, or that people have waists that taper. Cause once you remove aspects like that, certain clothing styles start looking really wierd. I did a photoshop edit of Lalafells a while back regarding issues with clipping, and personally the models would look better if they had more defined forms...I probably still have that photoshop somewhere.
My main is a potato too and I hate that mentality as well, it's kind of why i play alts most of the time and as much as i love my potato girl so much, i sometimes want to go back hyur and avoid this kind toxic mentality.
But then I remember that random pats on head is love so I stay.
I've been playing MMO's for nearly 15 years now and I've always been drawn to playing small, cute characters. In every MMO that gave me the option, there have been players who hated having the small race in game. I recall Horde players in WoW following my gnome around Shattrath spamming /spit at me. I've learned to shrug it off, as when I hear reasons given they always end sounding shallow, immature or just self-centred.
I have run into a handful of creepy types of the years but they do seem to be a thankfully small minority (and funnily enough never play the small races themselves).
Ultimately I play what I want to play and though I'm a fantasia addict, I always cone back to Lalafell in the end. They're just so cute it cheers me up to see them in action. As for the jokes, I admit I like those, often affectionately referring to my character as a Tater or a Spud. Not a big fan of the punting thing mind. Reminds me of the /spit spam.
Yep. I remember that. You were the definition of a reluctant lalafell.
Then you discovered the emotes.
Now, you are both a lalafell and a talented screen photographer. It makes me happy that you are happy.
It was a great edit. To tell you the truth, I feel your idea of what a lalafell should look like is spot on.
Did you know lalafell are called dwarves in the Japanese version of the game? So, why don't lalafell have dwarven body models?
Thanks again for all the positive replies, guys. :3 Honestly, back in the day this thread would've turned into a huge war between sides. I'm 100% sure of it. The guy and his followers would even bring up that someone was a lalafell in threads that had nothing to do with race.
P.S I love head pats
Stay a lala when we get the dwarves as a beast tribe quest during shadowbringers those who have playable lalas will laugh the most.
Well it would fix a lot of problems with the design aspects, but people like the potato power design. Small world though because I only found out later that the edit I did actually also made them a lot closer in design to how Harven from GBF are. Which I personally think is a more appealing design and far more functional then they currently are. Oh well. Lalafells are cute and fun to play as.
I am glad that you feel better about being a lalafell again! I hope you keep creating tons of memories with her. ♡
