There has been a re-occurring theme in Old media, you know books, movies, TV Shows, etc. There theme is there isn't really a bad guy. In your story; I bet you paint yourself as the good guy. Even though you may in fact be the bad guy overall, hypothetically speaking.

That's basically a misunderstanding of aether, and the player brought back the darkness of the night sky as per the legends on the first. Ascians are basically permanently attuned/skewed to darkness like the voidsent, but the aether as it normally channeled is non-aspected, and the light on the first is umbral aspected/passive/still/static. It's just not the aesthetic of darkness that you were expecting. Also, we don't have to make pacts with Ifrit to cast fire spells or flare, or Shiva to cast Blizzard or freeze, and summons are like constructs. They're imaginations just ran astrally out of control

by Ardbert at the end. Since the entire buildup was finally about us the players actually taking charge.

It Kind of is but the opening is super cool so whatever.
Your kind of actually playing the warrior of too much light more than anything

since we didn't use any darkness to win our battles including the last boss should have called it Nightbringers or Lightbringers just my 2cents.

Now that I think about it... the title 'Shadowbringers' is probably a red herring.

All the shadow/darkness stuff relates to The First's idea of darkness, not our own. Anyone who feels decieved hasn't been paying attention.

Besides, 'deceptive marketing' is a redundant title. It's just marketing.

"Lightquellers" was discarded because it didn't have the same impact I guess

Something as big as the WoL becoming a villain or rebelling against Hydaelyn would have been too big of a plot twist to spoil in a trailer so I didn't put too much weight into the wording.

I don't think "Shadowbringers" even refers to us, necessarily.

Heavensward sounded all fancy and lofty from a WoL perspective, but it also turned out to be a play on words regarding one of the primary antagonistic forces in the initial story arc.

We also have 5 more patches of story to go to see where and if the expansion name comes to fruition or has more layers to it so why is everyone acting like this is all the story we're getting and basing whether it was accurate marketing or not on what amounts to the first chapter? And as for the cinematic, each one that's come with an expansion either glossed over key story points, didn't show them, combined some, and even misrepresented some due to accident (evil Hraesvelgr in HW). We obviously aren't going to turn evil but we still have a lot of story to go so how about we just see what happens before we get cranky?

You know it's funny I expected Stormblood to be something involving the Maelstrom.

Boy was I in for a shock.

darkness can also mean night

Technically night is the shadow caused by the sun being blocked by the earth so no matter where you go with trying to decipher the title, it’s not wrong.

I still say Emet-Selch was the Shadowbringer. He brought back all the shadows ("shades", "ghosts") of Amaurot, after all.

He's at least why it's Shadowbringers, with an s.

It didn't help that the trailer featured the Dark Knight be the spotlight job of this expansion, and that he pretty much obliterated a Lightwarden(?) with what it seemed to be darkness/shadow.
Because, ya know, purple color is usually a heavy indication that dark/shadow magic is at play here.

Also, we get to be all purple only once for the sake of matching the trailer more or less. After that, we pretty much deal with radiant bright light and nothing else.

"Shadowbringers" was a very literal title. We bring back the shadows of night to the First. It's plural because we're not alone on the front lines this time.

But conversely the expansion could have been called "Lightbringers" because the Warrior of Light absorbed a ton of the Light and used it to take down antagonist. The Scions of the Dawn were right with us on the front lines too.

Except the light was already there. We didn't really bring it, we redirected it. "Lightredirectors" doesn't have the same ring to it.

Technically the shadow was already there too being the Earth was still blocking the sunlight, we merely exposed it. Shadowexposers doesn't have the same ring to it either.

Not to the people of the First. They haven't had night in over a century, until we brought it back.

I think we're just going in circles here.

Didn't video show our world completely destroyed and covered in darkness from the black rose. Maybe later on in the expansion we give up the crystal of light and take a crystal of darkness from ascians. We did find out Hydaelyn is what cause all the unbalance from that ascian. Still think where going to have to fight her in this expansion to bring back the balance.
