I just know that if Hrothgar are coming and they're similar to what most of us think they'll look like, Shadowbringers is going to spoil me. Two races that are tall and athletic in a single expansion? I'm in love. What did I do to deserve something so good?
It's worth noting that the lore in FFXIV regarding Viera is in the Raid content, not the MSQ. So the average player may not even see that lore. Second, while lore says "Oh theyre rare", it doesnt say they dont exist and frankly it can be easily written that theyve come out of 'hiding', which woudl explain their increased numbers.
-FFXIV Stuff happens.
-Male Viera "Oh hey, maybe we should help do somethigna bout this." Comes otu of hiding en mass.
-In game NPCs "Oh look at these guys showing up! They were rare before but now theyre here cause plot reasons!"
- Game goes on and no one bats an eye about it after.
Also worth noting, teh current lore can be retconned to say "It used to be very rare a non Viera has seen a male Viera".
Anyways sorry for the aside.
No, they say that they are rare and so aggressive that if you have seen one, you are probably dead. They shoot outsiders on sight, that's why male Viera have never been seen, not because they are so rare seeing one is like winning the lottery. We know that 2 out of 10 Viera are male (aka 20%). We also know that Keepers of the Moon have similar numbers with their males with the only hard numbers being that only the biggest of Keeper families have 2-3 sons. It goes to reason that Keepers are more along the 10%-30% birth rate as well. And yet... *looks at your avatar*.
And, the game has never cared about giving you info dumps about your own race. I remember being a Duskwight and rolling my eyes as Foulques screamed in my face about how I would never understand the plight of his people, the Duskwight.
You aren't the thread police, especially since the two topics are intertwined. I will be just as salty if Hrothgar are male only as I am that Viera might be female only. It's worth talking about since Hrothgar have a high chance of being subject to poorly written lore excuses to why there is only guys.
my gripe if theres 2 new races more than anything is im out of slots for alts
If it's a bunch of lions shouldn't they be called "Hrothgrawr"?
...
Sorry I'll leave now.
Could be the Ronso everyone wanted, not that I'd be playing them!...
actually, what if hrothgar is there because you have to talk to someone during a mission where youre either glammed as one (lali-ho anyone?) or during an RP mission similar to the other 2 weve had in the last few patches?
does anyone have a screenshot of this?
Even then it would just be easier to set the quest step to "Apply the Hrothgar glamour" and have the step text be generic across all races once applied. No need to make it more complex, and open the path to bugs, if everyone gets the same thing anyway.
Hrothgar was a Danish king, so logically they will be a race of sentient pastry created through the fusion of ancient alchemical and culinary arts similar to their tuber-based relatives the Lalafell.
I hope they look like the Moombas from FF8. People wanted little short Viera because they felt we were lacking in small cute races like lalafell. I think this would be perfect!
It would! And it would make sense about being the male version of viera while being classified as a different race. There’s a such thing as a lionheaded rabbit and moombas kinda look like them.
And then there’s the strange line the dramaturge says about male and female viera being indistinguishable until they’re around 13 and then there’s no mistaking them. What if it’s because the males remain small and fierce little rabbit lions while the females grow tall like Fran etc?
I have my crazy theory on the Hrothgar, and it is probably the least popular opinion given what information has been thrown out there about them, but this is my theory.
However, I don't dismiss that maybe Hrothgar means "Male Viera" lore wise, but lets say it does-- Lets say "The manes" is not even dealing with lions...
For one, in older English (which 14 loves to use) Mane is a reference to long, flowing hair seen on people, so it could refer to a man or woman with flowing, beautiful mane (aka Their hair); Normally this is seen for the use of men with long hair.
The other is dealing with the rumor of the "lion" side of things, while maybe it could be a lion like race (again, maybe the male Viera look more lion than rabbit, maybe a new lion-race aka Ronso), but if we look at the Ivalice storyline, it deals with a story dealing with Lions also know as the War of the Lions or--- Zodiac Story.
I don't want to get into great details, but if you spoke with all the NPCs leading up to the third part, it was all about one particular race we been dealing with since 1.0. Maybe, just maybe "Hrothgar" is their actual racial name, and they just call themselves "Purebloods" to sound better than all the other races.
And this could be wrong, I am not gonna bet money on my theory and I know folks are gonna say: "They can't use magic!" .. But I think somewhere it said that a rare few /can/, but they don't cause no one teaches it-- and you have that whole Eye of Resonate thing, which I realized looking back-- Neal Van Darnus was using during 1.0 story.
But yeah, its my theory. I'm gonna stick to my crazy theory, because in the end, we will all find out what is going down in March and I'm excited for whatever may come!
Maybe keep the conversation on topic.
There's more than a few posts in this thread that you could transplant into the other one and it would look like they were originally posted there. In a thread meant to discuss specifically the Hrothgar, that's off-topic, and the stubbornness in not staying on topic is a problem that should be called out.
Yay! Someone who knows Breath of Fire! I already liked you but now I like you even more! I'd fantasia to one too if they look like that. But I don't want to if there's any gender lock of either race. That might just make me quit instead.
Hoping for the best case scenario that we get two full races! I'd prefer if they skip the horns though if they're based off of Ronso. As someone else pointed out, it wouldn't work with smn horns or gear that goes across the forehead. And 99% of the time when I play my main, I use my summoner dong. I'd also hate for them to do an Au Ra on us and lock horns to faces. D:
Two full races would be best case scenario. Ill keep my hopes up for that personally. Unfortunate that FF is like a month or more away. Christ.
We still have the "young elezen" viera. And don't let anyone tell you young elezen are not short. They are 1.5 lalafells.
Try telling a 5 yo girl and a 5yo boy apart. You can't but once they hit puberty there is no mistaking them.Yeah it's just puberty. Just rapid onset puberty at 13 yo, exactly like the elezens in their early 20s IIRC.
Not saying it CANT be gender dimorphism, but it's probably only going to be clan dimorphism like the Hyurs.
I'm thinking Viera will be Clan dimorphic (like Hyur) and Hrothgar will be gender dimorphic (like Au Ra). Four playable options!
We really don't. Her comment can be translated as "combination" not purely "variation." So she was likely implying there is a combination of face+hair+height that makes them look like a "young elezen". Female Viera already appear to have a pretty wide variety in heights from the video we've been shown, and already look a lot like Elezen with bunny ears. Plus we've even seen concept art of one of their hairstyles that looks a lot like Alisae's.
And if that wasn't enough, the in game lore dump spells out the 2 distinct viera clans being the Rava and Veena, the differences being between light skin and dark skin which lines up with almost every other race where the major difference between the two are skin palette variations.
Wel if I had a wishlist of things, yeah I would want Viera to be clan dimoprhic with one clan being the more amazonian ones weve seen (both male and female) while the other would a shorter more cute race (again having both male and female) and Rons-err-Hrothgar would be like Au Ra and be big hulking beast manly men and dainty beast women....Actually dainty beast women would be kind of funny to see. In any case, Im hoping for no genderlocking nonsense. More options the better for everyone.
So if I understand you correctly...
In this thread:
"What if the Hrothgar are genderlocked?"
"Please don't talk about genderlocking here, this is just about Hrothgar."
In the genderlocking thread:
"What if the Hrothgar are genderlocked?"
"Please dont talk about Hrothgar here, this is just about genderlocking."
Sigh
On-Topic: Hrothgar being gender locked
Off-Topic: Viera being genderlocked.
On-Topic: Viera are hinted to being clan dimorphic, so maybe Hrothgar are dimorphic too! Au Ra also were so it's continuing a trend.
Also On-Topic: Roe's aren't played as much, so I don't see why they would add another bulk race.
Off-Topic:Trying to pretend that people weren't turning this into a thread all about Viera.
Can you please DROP THIS! so we can talk about the leaked race we have no idea about and are wildly mass guessing because it is fun? People want to talk about Hrothgar in a Hrothgar thread and you are getting upset at us for getting upset at you for interrupting our Hrothgar fun.
And please do not be disingenuous, that's mean and insulting.
Maybe we should have a thread to discuss what we can discuss in this thread.
Cecil King was once a proud Hrothgar PLD and prominent "Fur Rights Activist" protecting Miqo'te, Viera, and Hrothgar everywhere, he had even started protecting Au Ra rights!

That is until he became the manager of the diverse idol group, Black Fire Innocence to help with "Fur Rights". The job left his soul pitched and turned him into a DRK.

Now, after a year of therapy, anger management classes, and yoga, he is doing much better and purchased a Lionheart Gunblade as a present for himself. He is much happier.

P.S. His mortal enemy is a bow-wielding man-hunter. (played by Jonathan Hyde)
I don't know. When I tried to post my theory about Hrothgar being our version of male Viera, I got shouted at for being off topic.
Which topic should that theory be posted in?
It involves Hrothgar, Viera, and genderlocked races.
I'll say it again. We know nothing about the Hrothgar, therefore theories will be so wild that there is bound to be overlap.
It's possible that they've been working on Hrothgar (and maybe Viera) for a very long time. Potentially since 3.0 - if that's the case, then it isn't that crazy to think they could have two full races. Especially considering that going through ALL the armor to adjust it is such a huge task, you might as well make several changes in one go through, right? I mean... think about it. Lets say you have 100 files and you need to change each one to make a new file. Is it easier to go through each one by one and then later do it again? Or is it easier to take that first file and while you have it in front of you, make several new files and then be done and move on to the next? Personally, I think that sounds easier! It's still a lot of work but if you're going to be going through anyway, might as well right...?
I think it's possible that have male viera. I'm not saying 100% they do but I think it's still a possibility.
Viera, female at least, HAD to be revealed when they were due to them appearing the the raid. However, it's Matsuno's creation. He should have been able to be present for info revealing them. Maybe getting to reveal the males will be his thing? Maybe the males weren't ready to be revealed? Maybe they just wanted to mess with us? Who knows. I'm honestly not sure and I'm not asserting that I think there will be male viera because as far as I'm concerned, it's a huuuuge toss up. But I'm just saying, I don't think we can write it off completely just yet. I do realize you said "very small chance" but I'm just saying. :)
Anyway,
If Hrothgar DOES end up being a beastial race...I think it's just as crummy if it's male only. A lot of people like bestial races, not just men! That earlier posted image of the Ronso was gorgeous. <3 And if it ISN'T beastial, I wonder what it could possibly bring to the table that's special enough to warrant it as worthy of taking up the place of male Viera. And if it's truly that great, will it not be upsetting not to have a female equivalent? I just can't see a case where gender locking either race will be viewed favorably by most.
Since its pretty obvious (at least to me) that Hrothgar is going to be the male counterpart to female Viera, how beastly are people wanting them to be? Do you want a tall buff Miqo'te or a Charr from Guild Wars 2? Since they're defining feature is a "majestic mane" do you think they'll get completely unique hair and wont use any of the hairstyles we have? Or will it be like "manes" in Aion? So many questions. I'm kind of disappointed in a genderlocked race (kinda cheapens the games image to a free-to-play kmmo) but SUPER excited to get something we've never seen before.
I'd love it if Hrothgar had bunny ears, maybe not so many feline features at all, kinda slender/lanky body type, and no tails.
Let's be honest guys, I think we should keep our expectation at a realistic level. As much as I want a strong muscular female Hrothgar, there is no way in seven hells that we're going to get two full blown race. I just can't see it, it's too good to be true.
I would love to play as a tall, buff, fierce female character, but I feel like the Hrothgar being a Ronso equivalent playable race is setting my expectations too high. :(
As others have pointed out, having a "beast-like" race equivalent to Ronso, well, I'm just not sure they would do that for a playable race. The game has this very big distinction between "mankind" races and "beast" races. The mankind ones are the privileged ones in positions of power, and all look similar-ish to, well, humans. But I feel like a Ronso equivalent would fall too closely under what this world categorizes as a beast race.
There is the Lupin I suppose, who live with mankind and seem to be seen as equal to the Domans, but they haven't let us play as them, so I'm not sure why they would suddenly let us play as something similar now. Unless there's been a specific desire from the community to play as Lupin, and the devs are like, "Well, we already made them to be unplayable/npcs, but maybe we could make something else..." But I've only started playing the game recently, and so far I haven't any strong requests for playable Lupin. Was that a request players had at launch?
The other thing is that I suppose the Far East doesn't seem to have the distinction between mankind and beastkind, I think? Or at least in the same strong/binary "us and them" kind of way that Eorzeans have. Since the game/story kind of focuses on everything from Eorzeans point of view, I feel it's unlikely the Hrothgar would be like the Ronso. An example being we travel to the Far East from Eorzea, not the other way around. Even the geographical terminology in the game is from Eorzean's perspective "Far East (from Eorzea)." So I'm sure why Eorzeans would suddenly be fine with a Ronso like race being around.
Although I do really hope that the Hrothgar are more like the Ronso (and of course have both female and male options), since we don't have a playable race like that yet!
If Hrothgar is suppose to be the gender counter parts to Viera be it male Vieras themselves or a sister race maybe they are based on lionhead rabbits like previously suggested. If the former maybe the gender identifier that they noticed when a boy starts to come of age is his hair starts to get fluffy and take on a mane sort of appearance and their ears instead of becoming tall and thin are short and wide.
Remember the leaker wasn't exactly right about everything. So maybe when they said lion race they actually meant lionhead rabbits and manes would still play a part in their lore and unique racial hairstyles. I do think they will be pretty athletic and on the larger side like maybe a cross between a highlander and au ra since if they are actually just male viera they are suppose to be trained fighters capable of taking down any intruders.
Overall I can't wait to see what actual get's revealed at the last fan fest and with it being just over a month away I am dieing inside.
