BLU for Duty Finder and Raids! Show your support!

As one who was disappointed that BLU got the solo announcement, I am warming up to the compromise of premades. Premades, people can consent the state of the blue mage in their party, in duty finder they cannot beyond a kick, which could mess up the duty finder eco system, either in a BLU that cannot function well or just having to kick a BLU and get another DPS in. There is also the fact Blue Mage is not restricted to a role and the system is not built around being able to select a role to queue as like in WoW and I suspect there would be core system changes needed to get it to work like that. Whilst there are solutions to each problem, it does seem like something that can create a lot of problems. There was going to be compromise somewhere regardless and they've had to find where to make that compromise and thusly you have a situation where there's going to be people not happy regardless of what it is.

As they've implied BLU is the "first" of its kind, this suggestes they want to play with this idea further in the future on other jobs. One complaint has been that they keep dishing out the same formula, so it may be a good thing they're trying something new/different. And for comparison SMN was a disappointment on release, whilst there are many of us who love SMN, they did sacrifice its identity to get it to work within FFXIV's system and some people are still unhappy about and they're currently caught between two identities, a DoT mage with a pet and something that summons powerful aetheric beings to fight for them. This system may well in future give people the summoner people hoped for in addition to the summoner we got. Because it is still a Final Fantasy title, so people do have certain expectations about how certain jobs should be. And a job's identity is difficult to capture when the system don't give much leeway. Red Mage I think they were clever with, because they were able to keep its identity, despite Red Mage being a jack of all trades job.

It could also be a vengeance based tank, using its Learn mechanic to both work as a cooldown against future attacks and as a rebuttal to tankbusters and raidwides.

I Dont Understand Why There Are so many people here acting like what yoshi p said isnt true... A Blu mage in raids cant be balance with its potential kit and you know it so dont kid yourself. Making enemies immuned to what will turn out to be most of my strongest attacks wheres the fun in that?. Unlocking skills during quest was my idea but it's really not blue mage and that would have been your complaint.
When it comes to raids im a blue mage but I dont have or want to use the Specific moves you want so I get kicked. Every party doing a skill check before we Que but Because I dont wanna fall in line with some dumb meta that a youtuber or twitch steamers will create I cant join. people already seriously tell others to go watch videos of new content Instead of just learning it your own way... if you need a example look at the age old pressure from the community saying healers have to dps (which has only been admittedly proven necessary 1 time) I dps but would never tell my co healer you better also or you will be kicked... if you think such dumb scenarios wont happen with the blue mage you live in a bubble and dont know the community Your playing with. Instead of isolating the random person playing blu from raids making them feel like crap SE decided to isolate raids and tell blu you too strong for this.

There are plenty of ways showcased in other FF games to make BLU in GROUP CONTENT POSSIBLE. not least of which ffxi which everything was group content.

The Level 5 Death example in the PLL while true if it was how it worked 99% of Blue Mage KO skills either did a good chunk of damage to a boss or boss was immune to it. This is Cannologically Lore to the series. Why restrict it? Does Stun work on all bosses? Sleep? Knockbacks? Of course not.

There is also the well if they dont get their skills they're useless/unprepared.... Make a system check (Does Blu have X set skills, yes? Can queue Y dungeons and lower) This would be a check just like "Are you a battle Class?" or "Are you level? "Is your Ilvl High enough"
Could also use the Masked Carnivale to be a prereq for 8man content. A Quest marker (ie the way you can't run 8m Raids until you've completed X MSQ) Before you start screaming that it's solo gameplay, I know. The purpose would be Win 3 sets ( or how many) of Carnivale. This would then Unlock 8man+ content because you showed sufficient proficiency of Blu Mastery to run content.

I'm sure there will be achievements for Skills Unlocked. Could make one, ie 30, unlock roulettes.

I like most of what SE is doing for Shadowbringers, but locking BLU out of PUG duties is a horrible idea, and has killed a lot of people's enthusiasm for the class.

I get that SE wants the Blue Mage experience to be as accurate as possible, with a big list of spells and abilities and lots of arduous hunts to gather them all, but there has to be a way of structuring the basic BLU into your general content. In fact, it can easily be done, and the game already has the solution built-in.

In Palace of the Dead, you can be a level 30 WAR who has all the abilities up to 60.

So why can't a BLU automatically get bread and butter spells for each duty the moment they load in? Maybe not the best or rarest spells, but just the ones that they need to participate in that particular dungeon or that particular normal raid?

Obviously, it's not a problem with Savage content because you need a premade for that anyway. Anything you need a PF for--any high end duty--the game shouldn't help you; your BLU should be tested on their own merits. Similarly, any powers or spells deemed "too strong" for regular duty content can be locked to solo content.

By using the Palace system you can get BLU into every regular duty, and by banning certain OP spells from group duties you can keep the solo experience rewarding.

When a BLU already has better spells and abilities learned, no help is needed and the BLU just uses the higher level spells they've learned that are on their bar already.

It takes extra work and thought, but it's doable, and BLU is worth it.

Well I generally trust the Dev team to listen to feed back. So i think if people are loud enough about this they might just change this decision. Say what you will about the Dev's but they have done some crazy stuff in the name of pleasing the players. So make some noise, people.

i was exited to see blue mage geting added but that excitement turned to sheer disappointment.Saying it cant be done for party play as i think of blue mage in FF 11. honestly i hope they take a long hard look at what they did i hope they change it. one more thing about the "what if one joins the party with the wrong spells?" that isnt a argument i can ask what if you dont show up with the right gear?hmm right you see my point we are not stupid spells for blue mage are counted as gear.

This is a strawman argument. Show me a single post where I've made any of those criticisms? And yet I feel BLU not fitting the content the way the other jobs fit is a problem.

Yes, it's very obvious that BLU having a large roster of spells is hard to balance into regular content. But we're not allowed to use certain spells or abilities in certain content already, see also: the division between PVE and PVP. BLU could be the same, with some flex. It'd be nice to have BLU be a little bit OP in raids and trials if it had all the rare unlockable spells and abilities, and not all of them were banned from group content.

As disappointed as I am that Blue Mage is a "limited job", they've already committed to this. The job has already had so much work put into it that makes it not work for group content, that making it work for group content would require scraping everything they have and starting over. I would have loved if they had made BLU a regular job from the start, but at this point I don't want them to cancel a new type of gameplay that some players are looking forward to, as well as cancel whatever else they were going to work on next in favor of restarting work on BLU just so that I can have what I want.

you can just say they cant use the op spells in content like that problem solved they can still be used to solo or get new spells.

people that are willing to let this slide cant complain when a game loses its way and becomes out of touch.nothing is set in stone its our sub that pays them as entitled as that may sound i would say in turn a company is not entitled to praise and invulnerable from criticism when they make a mistake.

Well, if it works, great. If it don't work, it'll get an overhaul in 6.0 like BRD did in 4.0. I just hope they don't do this "limited" job thing again.

i love that blum starts at 1 so i have plenty of time to level and learn all sorts of awesome abilities, i love the 24 spell 'deck' that we can slot abilities into, and i love that we have tons of abilities to go find in the world, i think youre selling yourselves short on blue mage being viable for df and such

i think i have a way that blue mage could work exactly the way the devs have so far but still be viable for df, and thats having around 6 of those ability slots of the 24 be set to take certain types of spells like 'single target', 'cone aoe', 'burst', 'ranged burst', 'line', 'buff', and as long as these slots are filled with an appropriate spell the blue mage can access df and everything else (the beauty of even this is even within that 'cone aoe' required slot you could have flamethrower, aqualung, bad breath, hecatomb wave, and could even have the others in your free slots)

this way, the blue mage has a set of skills that they can always be relied upon by the party to have at least one of, and the more a blue mage learns the more versatile they are, and if these actions work like role actions in that they can be swapped any time out of battle that means from satasha all the way to high end raids the blue mage is highly adaptable and can reward people who come up with crazy strats like glass howitzer (final sting followed by lifebreak) or blank gazing a def up and then hitting them with enervation

as for bosses, at this point we fully expect them to have contractual immunity to most status effects, hell its actually super surprising and feels like an accomplishment to realise a boss ISNT immune to stun at certain times, so saying bosses are immune to lvl 5 death im betting wouldnt bother anybody whos ever played a FF game or even most rpgs

so please Yoship and Yokozawa, i truly want to be able to use blue mage in all content and i totally understand if you need time with actual play data to be sure its balanced enough that it will work within all content, but please dont let "THE META" assholes be a reason to deny blue mages a way to shake up and add an element of surprise to content

Literally just make it so we can learn abilities through class quests; its the same every other class and job did before Stormblood, I see no reason why we can't use that same system. Make me fight a Cactuar at level 1, a goblin at level 5, so on, so forth.

Please just don't cut me off from content. I want to be a Blue Mage main, not a Blue mage... sometimes when the mood strikes me and i have no friends on.

I'll preface this by saying I have been waiting since 1.0 for BLU to be a thing. I haven't put a ton of time into FFXIV (though my sub has been going the whole time in anticipation of BLU) because none of the other jobs click with me.

Their reasoning for BLU to be limited is a really big cop out. We have a ton of watered down classes.

Summoner. Summoners throughout the Final Fantasy franchise have been extremely powerful beings. Summoning things like Atmos and Alexander that can destroy cities or even countries. Yet the Summoner we have now doesn't even summon full Primals. Hell they don't even have access to even half of the Primals/Summons that have existed throughout the FF franchise. Yet it is okay for them to be watered down to fit into FFXIV and not be to OP.

Black Mage. Black Mages have also been extremely powerful throughout the Final Fantasy franchise. We don't see every spell Black Mages have had in the FF franchise accessible. Death is a Black Mage spell and it wasn't even level 5. Just Death. Meteor was a Black Mage specific spell, not a Limit Break like we have. Not to mention Comet, Break, Demi, Ultima, Apocalypse etc.

Red Mage. Also another watered down version of the single player games. Red Mages don't have access to their full repertoire for sure. They don't have all the healing spells they have access to throughout the single player games, they don't have spells like Toad and Mini. Or Raze which was another spell that caused Death.

So BLU could have been made in line with all the other jobs that were watered down to fit into FFXIV and still be enjoyed by the player base that wanted to main BLU and have been waiting for it for a long time. For whatever reason though they seem to have it in for BLU.

Preach it, friend. SE needs to change this, even if it takes time. This doesn't need to be a bad thing. BLU can be balanced.

Find a way to allow it into Duty Finder, SE. I understand it may be overpowered or underpowered. That's why the starting cap is 50. Use that to your advantage. Even if the rollout is slow, if you try to make it useable with parties, we'll appreciate it. People want Blue Mage that much.

Also RNG learning, why, what did we do to you?!?

If they are so worried about balancing 49 spells, why on earth did you give them 49 spells? You have control over the amount of spells they have Square! This is like an uncle at Christmas swearing he's going to only have the one beer. Suddenly by the end of the night things got out of control and now the kids are crying.

I absolutely love how you paint this false dichotomy. You must think you're so clever!

There's no reason why we can't have "incentivized eureka-style grind" and "RNG-rarely-learned" actions in the field, and also allow for duty finder and raiding capabilities. Has it ever occured to you the two aren't opposing forces?

This isn't about being faithful, nor is it about being angry with something "new and innovative." It's about addressing a failure of creativity.

Sooner or later I think they’ll cave and rebalance the job and it’s abilities. My thought for blue mage was not to learn skills from mobs but just tie the abilities to the job quests and have them usensome iconic enemy attacks while making it a caster dps with some unique animations and spel effects. Maybe the unique gimmick could have been building up some sort of monster soul/blood resource. Ah well. It’s too late now.

Also to the people that say it can’t be balanced around raid content I call BS. SE has 100% control over literally every aspect of the job and the content. They can balance things anyway they damn well please.

I used to have an Idea for a Blue Mage that learned all it's magic from interacting with the beast tribes. I always liked the concept. But alas it is not to be.

ill say what i said in another thread but a good idea to have a win-win is to grant blue mage a PVP like bar for PVE instances , this way they can make sure what skills can be used with what strengths and balance those skills accordingly, while allowing blue mages to play other content solo.

I frankly would have preferred BLU to just be a Job themed around BLU rather than what we have gotten even if that meant it wouldn't be a true BLU. I think it is probably more difficult to just convert a BLU as it has been developed into one that works in a role system than people seem to think though. This is assuming of course that it wouldn't require much resources to implement a system that force switched your abilities when in an instance.

People seem to want two jobs in one effectively. A Job that behaves like a BLU outside of instanced content and like a pseudo BLU inside instanced content. That seems a little unfair to other Jobs. Sure BRDs got their music thing but that is a rather small thing compared to an entire job system. Plus I suspect a lot of people would be very unhappy getting restricted when put in instances.


Honestly I don't really know what would be a good fix. I am pretty unconvinced by some of the suggestions I see made though. They could easily end up breaking things or pouring so much time into BLU to try and make it work that other Jobs that really need some love get short changed.

This is not what I expected when they said Blue mage was coming. If they thought it was ok to do this to blue mage why even put blue mage in the game. This feels like blue just turned into pokemon with we gotta catch them all blue spells that we won't be able to use in non preformed dungoen content and open world content. If this was their idea on blue mage why not just put in beastmaster instead of blue mage since it's more like what they are doing with blue mage. Please SE fix this. Let people play blue mage in duty finder and raids.

I wasn't particularly hyped for Blue Mage, but I hate what it represents. That solo content will be locked to specific, solo content only jobs. That those jobs won't be able to do anything but their unique solo only content. That they might add other jobs to this new system in the future.

I don't want the hype of every new job announcement to be blunted by the fear that it might be another limited job.

Please DON'T allow BLU in random parties.
While I am sure that good players will be able to pull their weight by learning the correct abilities, 95% of all BLUs will be horribly gimped and only be baggage.
You can join dungeons and raids with a premade group of friends (I doubt you'd have much fun in ex/savage with bosses being immune to most of what you can do), so you are not "banned" from doing the content.

Just keep them out of randomly queued stuff..

I hope they keep the "solo" concept, I think it would be easier to implement much more jobs that does not fit the balanced structure. Or even add solo versions of all jobs to be a new type of content.

That is absolute rubbish. There are content modes already in the game that go to town with your skills and your hotbars. PvP and the deep dungeons at least. They don't need to touch the BLU solo experience, I admit it's fresh and interesting, and a good time sink for enthusiasts of the job. But the only thing stopping them from making it a 'proper' job seems to be the two misconceptions they brought up in fanfest which people have torn apart in this thread alone repeatedly. It's not a matter of 'can't', it's a matter of 'won't'.

On the other hand, we were never likely to see more than 2 new jobs per expansion, this "limited job" allows for more jobs to be added.
In addition to our 2 expansion jobs we can also get other jobs that dont fit into the system.

Possible future limited jobs?
Mime or Puppet Master seem to fit the bill to me.

Erm... 90% of the game is 'old content' the people dont play anymore.
People have been clamouring for a reason to play old content.

After RDM i had really high hope they can make BLU work in this game. It still can, but they came up with unconvincing excuses not to do it. If you dont put the effort into acquiring the skills needed, you shouldnt expect a party invite. And the LV5 response? Bosses dont get stunned, slowed, or silenced. Why should they get insta killed now? Come on square enix!

Lock duty finder and party participation after unlocking certain skills needed to join. We are already limited to 24 actions only, so cant get overwhelmed.

We have been waiting for so long to play this job. And you are giving us a triple triad job instead, where you release 2-3 new skills each patch for us to "collect"

Long, heartfelt, possibly stupid ramblings coming in the next few posts. It can't all fit in one, so I apologize in advance for the inconvenience.

This is my very first post on these forums in all my time of playing this game since back in 2.0. Normally I'd just shrug off a poor design choice and do my best to work with it. But I can't do that here.

I remember thinking back at the launch of 2.0 "I'd love to see BLU implemented here." I watched with baited breath every single live letter or press event in some hope beyond hope for this job that I truly love. I remember the whole Spiderman/Sam Raimi conspiracy theory and clung to that desperately. When Samurai was announced instead, I was disappointed, but I knew that Blue Mage would eventually be a job.

But this is not the Blue Mage job. This is the battle content equivalent of Triple Triad. I honestly don't doubt that it will be enjoyable side content. But it's side content. I haven't dreamt of a Blue Mage job since literally the launch of the game so that I could play solo in an MMORPG. I dreamt of the day that I'd be able to raid with my static with the job I have loved throughout literally every iteration within the Final Fantasy franchise.

Through every game with a Blue Mage archetype, I have played Blue Mage. The theme of obtaining strength directly through combat with enemies just struck a chord with me. I will freely admit that the ability acquisition they have described is WONDERFUL. When I saw that I would start at level 1 and have to truly grind my way through all my spells, I was giddy. But what am I going to do with these spells? Why am I doing this work? I can't stay silent when an idea I've loved since I was a child is relegated to a single-player experience in an MMORPG.

If I knew that Blue Mage being implemented this way would only be temporary, I would honestly have no problem with it. This is a job that has had a history of incredible utility and versatility, and finding a way to properly incorporate that into a rigid Holy Trinity MMO like 14 is a vast undertaking. If you needed the time between 4.5 and 5.0 to properly test the job, balance the skills, and collect feedback from the community, I would have given such an incredible amount of respect for the dedication being shown. Hell, even if it took until 6.0, I'd still support it, although with less gusto. But you have effectively told this playerbase that has begged for Blue Mage for years that we do not get to play it like we do other jobs because you just don't want to deal with the hassle.

Imagine if this was how they implemented Red Mage: "Having access to swordplay, healing white magic, and destructive black magic is too complex for group content. Please enjoy this solo experience."

Or for Summoner: "Summons would be too large and bulky in a group, so you're only going to be able to play this job in the overworld."

But no, they didn't do that. They adapted the CORE FLAVOR of each individual job into a working adaptation for the MMO environment. I find Red Mage too simple to truly enjoy, but their kit consists of dashing swordplay, heals and resurrections, and powerful black magic. They kept the flavor of the job intact and made sure it worked in the context of group play. The Summoner Egis may be a little small and goofy, but the core motif of gaining power through these imposing and mighty avatars and summoning their spirits to do battle alongside you is still there.

They have kept the fantasy of all these jobs alive while still incorporating them into a group environment. Why can't the same be done for Blue Mage? We're already restricted to 24 actions set at any given time. Yes, I know that eventually a particular set of 24 actions would be found that offered complete optimal damage capabilities. But a particular rotation has been developed for every other job the game, and that hasn't forced any other jobs to be unable to complete raid content. That's completely fine. Expand upon that idea and limit the potency of certain actions in group content. No, I do not think Bad Breath should inflict poison, blind, silence, sleep, and slow on Omega. But if you change it to instead provide a damage over time and possibly a slight increase to damage taken or decrease to damage dealt effect on bosses, the CORE FLAVOR of the spell is kept. I don't think Angelic Whisper should provide all of my party with auto-reraise, but I do think it could function as a defensive cooldown that provides mitigation or healing to the group. Please understand that the extreme effects of the spells do not need to remain unchanged. You just need to capture the spirit of the job and its history.

I also need to address the absurdly condescending "justification" that people who play BLU without all their spells would be removed from raids, so you just shouldn't let BLU raid. You are effectively saying that because the job has a high barrier to entry for optimal play, it should just not be allowed in situations where optimal play matters. You are completely disqualifying people from even having the opportunity, because why? It would be a grind to gather all the spells? I think we're all fairly comfortable with a grind at this point in the MMO market.

You could have made this work. You could have established particular spell requirements that people would 100% have to have in order to do raid content. You could have toned down the potency or absurdity of certain spells to fit into raid content. But you didn't, because it was too complex, or difficult, or time-consuming, or people might be a little mean if you didn't gather all the spells. You could have made this work, and it is so incredibly insulting and disheartening that you didn't try hard enough.

I have looked forward to Blue Mage in 14 since 14 was announced. To know that I will NEVER be able to live that dream I had of playing Blue Mage alongside my friends as we progress through raid content fills me with such sadness and disappointment the likes of which I have never experienced in a video game. As a life-long fan of the Final Fantasy franchise, I implore you, with every fiber of my being, to reconsider your design choice and find a way to implement Blue Mage properly within this game that I love.

It is not.
You can do the content in preformed parties.
You simply cannot use automated matchmaking.

Really do not see the problem here. Get a few friends and convince them to drag your butt through the content. They won't care if your DPS isn't up to snuff compared to other classes. Dungeons & normal trials shouldn't be a problem.
I doubt BLU can be strong enough for EX/savage, you might want to steer clear of those.
I am sure there will be groups whacky enough to take a BLU along there too. ^^

Given the freedom players have with this job, it is a good decision to restrict matchmaking (they could allow low level matchmaking though b/c low level stuff is easy as f*** anyway) instead of forcing all BLUs into FOTM abilities so they can compete.

In the worst possible way. We basically get them, but don't get them at the same time. A limited job means that job will never be usable in content that people enjoy doing as a group in an MMORPG, because now it's a limited job.

When people say they'd rather have gotten nothing than this implementation of Blue Mage, this is what they mean. They'd rather hold on to the hope of eventually getting a playable Blue Mage, than one which is locked to content they can only play by themselves.

In outdated content that people could breeze through by choosing to de-sync anyway. Based on what they were saying during the live letter, it is unlikely BLU will ever be playable in current content, because it is designed as a solo job and not fitting for parties.
