I just like the idea of left and right earring more than a pair. (or left and right wrists)
I can see that SE did this to make the accessories on a character appear "full"
But we all agree regardless of which slots are available the stats of the accessories will be balanced.
So if they got rid of wirsts it would be one less thing to develop and players would just mix and match rings/earrings/neck.
Or get rid of earrings.
The way I see it, it would be less impact on player's knowledge and categorizing(search) the items. With the way its proposed you'll need to search four categories earrings, neck, wrists, rings. Splitting the earrings and removing wrists give you the same slot amount but narrows the category to 3.
Not a game breaker, just an OPINION of how I'd like it to be. No need to rage over it.
I fear for the Goldsmithing industry who now have less demand for earrings. We may need a bailout ...
I agree with the reform. Less to deal with, and more focus. Oh, and, more inventory space, :D!. When you're holding accessories for 4 different jobs, this kind of reform is a godsend.
from this changes we can feel, original FF14 gave players from freedom to make own decision, but players dont like it, dumb ppl dont like complicated stuffs, they just want less combination, less brain work.

A 50% cut in usage of earrings is going to hit demand hard, no matter the stats. If a law was passed tomorrow saying that each household can only own 1 car, the automobile industry would take a nasty hit ... no matter how awesome or poor the mileage of that one new car may be.
just wondering in the 1.21 would I be able to wear str ring, dex ring, and piety ring of my choice.... or can I meld str materia to dex ring? if i can't have that many slots.
You can't wear 12 accessories right now but the combinations exist. The developers would have to account for any and all combination of current accessories when creating and balancing new content. With the new system they only have to account for the 5 accessories, not to mention no variance on spots the accessories are used in. People will use all 5 slots.

i agree, but ppl must be smart to combine best for themselves in different situation with limitation.
to make you can understand, for example just like in restaurant:
A restaurant allow customers to have 9 courses max, customer only allowed limited budget, like 12dollars
B restaurant allow customers to have 5 courses max, customer has no budge limit.
so customers went to A, need to be smart to balance like today i need more protein, vitamin or just taste.
customers went to B, just pick the most expensive one is fine, dumbass can do it
I hated slot cost... I hated looking at empty equipment slots. I'm ok with them cutting the number of slots to balance out the removal of slot cost.
We wont know if it is going to be better or not until we see all of the new accessories and their stats.
I agree it would be nice to allow people to choose if they display their accessories or not.
well as i see it, we have the same number of slots that we use right now, and the stats that they gave for example ar far better than what we have, yeah maybe to bracelets with hp right now gives 50 hp each one (i dont remember the exact hp right now and i dont care) so with 2 you get 100hp, well looking on the magic acc and crit +7 im asumming they'll give 100hp for a pair, so the system is less complex and you can equip all the slots, i think we'll get better stats from these new accesories.
So is not a big deal.
I think all they had to do was just revamp the recipes and stats like they did with armor. Either way we only equip 5 accesories anyway. I agree with the OP, it indeed does take away freedom and just leads to a more streamline set of accessories that classes will wear instead of the freedom we had before.
I see all this talk about earrings and how cant equip as many.. and how it will effect Goldsmithing. Who the hell equipped earrings in the first place? at lvl 50 no one! Rings.. chokers and bracelets. Earrings were crap compared to the stats on the other accessories. And if you bring up the argument that they are re working the stats... then having one earring is STILL better than 2 earrings pre 1.21.
I myself am a tank and if i were look at the slot reduction without taking into consideration the stats change i might be mad. One bracelet instead of 2? RAGE! less HP! Even under the old system if we were to remove an earring slot it doesn't effect a damn person!
This is great news for me as i can only use 4 items to equip 3 rings 1 neck. The third ring is just not even noticeable cause its just an acc ring i put on cause only thing i could find that's good for 2 points.
First of all, naming a thread [dev1244] discussions does not tag it with dev tags guys. =P
Secondly, Less accessories would seem easier to balance, as long as they balance people's damage, accuracy, etc up a bit since we'll be possibly loosing out on combination options.
And I hope they don't forget to adjust DoLs, 4 +5 stat rings really help stabilize gathering nodes, when your DoL is afew levels below a grade.
Crap. I just bought 4 piety rings for archer when they said they were getting rid of slot cost. Now there are only going to be 2 slots for rings and new rings added with better stats... Irritates me since I'm one of the 4% of playerbase that has less than a million gil but as long as the new stuff is really good and they create /display earring off then I'll be happy.
Hopefully they make some really big earrings and bling! I want big ol' hoops in my ears or gigantic diamonds that sparkle as I run through the light!

When 1.21 hits and you go see rings, earrings, and accessories for every other slot with a wider range of stats for customization please take a picture of your reaction and post it here. I'd love to see the expression.
With slot cost, it made sense to classify certain accessory slots with certain stats. You wouldnt be able to equip for every slot anyway, so your freedom came in the form of choice of slot, not stat. Essentially slot = stat.
With slot cost removed, everyone will be equipping 5 accessories freely all the time. It would make absolutely no sense to keep each slot limited to a certain stat-type. They simply need to give variety to the slots in terms of stats so players have freedom in selecting which accessory they want, rather than which slot they want to fill. I don't know about you, but the examples given definitely show new stat types in existent slots.
I really hope they add a graphical toggle for Left, Right or Both to gear that's being combined into one slot.
My observations:
We will no longer be able to spirit-bond 4 rings at a time/2 earrings at a time/2 bracelets at a time, all of which give material only obtainable from that type of accessory.
With the examples they've given on the new recipes, we don't actually gain anything by using 2 rings instead of 4 other than getting some inventory space back.
Even if we can put materia on accessories following patch 1.21, we still will not have free choice of "which" materia we can put on them, just like we don't have free choice of "which" materia we can put on any piece of gear. More than likely, the materia they designate for rings/earring/wrist/neck will not be anything you'd want to put on them in the first place, because that would, technically, destroy whatever perceived "game balance" SE "thinks" they have in place.
My feelings on this change:
Personally, I'm not happy.
I'm all for maintaining inventory space, but when SE originally announced the "abolishment" of slot cost, I thought it was just that, getting rid of a horrible Tanaka inlaid gimick that should not have existed in the first place, and allowing players to reach a "fuller" potential.
Instead, we got a reworked system (9 to 5 slots) which explains why it took them so long to get us this fix in the first place.
Going by SE's track record of previous changes/implementations they've done over the past year+, I don't hold out much faith that this system will benefit us at all.
As it stands now as they explained it (without taking into account how new accessories may or may not have stats spread) we gain absolutely nothing from this change. However, we don't really lose anything either (other than the ability to spirit-bond 3-4 rings at once), nothing really changed other than instead of 9 slots, we now have 5.
If I had known that they'd be reducing the slots ahead of time, I would have lobbied more for new accessories with better stats for level 50, than the removal of the slot cost system (which could have worked if SE actually sat down and made the system more intuitive).
Most of all though, I'm upset with this give/take mentality SE has for FFXIV. It seems they feel they can't give us something without taking something else away in the name of game balance.
Now if the game was actually balanced, and they needed to maintain it, I'd be all for whatever changes they made to that cause, but as it stands now, the game is 95% unbalanced. No one wants to play MRD, LNC, or PUG because they are "unnecessary" and, as a whole, entirely unconventional for any fight where the mob does not stand still the entire time, which does not happen, because the enmity system (which SE already changed once before) is not balanced.

They should just keep it like FFXI. 2 Earring Slots, 2 Ring Slots, 1 Neck slot. There wasnt any Bracelet Slots in FFXI but anything bracelet was Hands. Im fine if it was....

They better start including Ammo Slot for accessories like FFXI did. I want to hold Crystal Stones/Backpack that boost my stats. ^.~
