Played plenty of MMOs where mounts couldn't jump, or even had much of a speed increase and i'm pretty sure they're not inexperienced developers.
It's called system design, everyone does shit differently.

well all it shows is the developers didnt plan all far ahead and the game will be shakled in the past because developers cant develop advanced features very much like ffxi.
Difference is, the PS2 was hardware from 1998 or 1999, so they actually couldn't do much back in those days, it's not that they don't plan ahead, just sometimes you can't always do something lol. It's why when you load up an MMO not one MMO does absolutely everything or even sometimes exactly the same as another not because the developers are lazy or anything, it's because they simply didn't design the game that way is all.
My question is, if I'm mounted can't I ramp it?
in 10 years ps3 will hold ffxiv back?
Mounts should be able to jump just like you should be able to climb a mountain and jump off it if you want, other games have these things and its not about being like other games its about allowing the freedom to do whatever you want, in the first few games that was what I loved the most.
It would be nice if they could jump :) I guess we'll have to wait and see!
Here is my unbaised view on jumping.
It is not neccisary but, it does add a new dimension (Litterally) to the game.
Now, as for mounts. . . If jump is implemented. . . Chocobos (and maybe wolves) should be able to jump. I just can't see a Gobbue jumping at all. Arihams should fly and Drakes. . . I am not sure.
These things should all be situational though. (Ofc, Arihams should be able to fly anyhow as a regulars way of transportation.)
To be honest, I'd LOVE if we could breed chocobos with different characteristics, and the one which jumps or the one which flies or that goes faster could be something that can suggest even more content!
Let's say, there's a place from where you have to go jumping, since the normal jump doesn't permit that. You get on your Red Chocobo and you finally can access that place unlocking even more sidequests and monsters to kill, drops to have and so on. Same thing with the Dark Blue Chocobo: Let's say you can't get to a place because Red Chocobo can't jump that high, so you hop on your Dark Blue Chocobo and directly fly there =)
Indeed, people say they want more content, yet the most obvious way to introduce long term content some rather dull it down to almost nothing by allowing every mount to jump/fly/whathaveyou lol. Yoshida is obviously interested in personalized chocobos, no idea why some would be against breeding chocobos to gain certain traits like Jumping/Digging/ability to cross water/"Hot&cold"/flying etc.
Though it seems people aren't against the idea of them fighting with you in battle so go figure lol.
In any case there should be specific content for every chocobo ability and not only for fun.
Sorry if its been mentioned before but "Delsus Lionheart's Gobbue jumps... It causes an earthquake!!!"
But with Chocobos it could be made like the previous games (like what has been mentioned) if they add breeding and different colours the different colours can have different abilities (like yellow standard, blue can walk through shallow water, black can fly etc etc.)
I really dont want all mounts to jump, masses of people jumping "just for lulz" will be bad enough but masses of jumping gobbues will just be plain stupid.
Completely a matter of opinion whether you feel it's unnecessary or not, and a huge amount of games do need it. In the big granddaddy of them all, WoW, many areas would be very difficult to navigate without being able to jump (And by extension, fall off ledges and such that this game doesn't allow you to do, either)
It's beyond me why anyone would object to jumping being in a game for anything other than the already discredited reason of "kids will jump around like idiots all the time," which, again, is a load of crap. Just don't give them the attention they want, and they will stop.
The only issue I have with making different colored chocobos have different abilities is that you get into the whole color=stats thing we had with gear that nobody liked. If you bred for abilities/colors separately it would be great.
Chocobos will probably jump automatically depending on how exactly they will act. If they follow us around while active as a NPC party member they are going to need to jump to get to wherever we can go. Just because they do that doesn't mean we'd be able to jump while on them, though
The oposite could be said as well, considering the massive discussion this topic brings up every single time. It's a polarizing subject that people either love or hate, don't just assume that adding jump is going to stop new people from playing the game. For all you know having jump could turn people away from the game.
oh please no one is going to be turned off by being able to jump. these humans who are offended by jumping are just ridiculous children and it just unheard of until now. if you dont like jumping dont jump.
why should we players be shakled down because of humans with backwared views?
Why would people be turned off by not being able to jump? It works both ways, besides there's been good MMOs that had a jump mechanic that does absolutely nothing and there's been crappy MMOs that has a jump mechanic that does something.
Jumping isn't a crucial mechanic as plenty of good games and MMOs exists without it -- Crucial means "the game can't function without it." You could say that Jumping of players/Mount is a nice system to have but it is in no way important, or else games that have zero jump mechanic whether online or offline would have failed.
oh please. many people's first mmorpg was wow and you could jump, so when these gus move on to next game they will expect some basic features, jump being one of them. not having it will be a step backwards for them. before ffxiv was released i noticed a lot of people complained about no jump. it is just ugly. why do we need a walking and run animation when your character could just slide around? the animation isnt crucial amirite.
So in other words you're stating every game that released without a jump mechanic of any genre failed?
I'm pretty sure I've been gaming since the late 70s early 80s and I can't recall any game failing due to the lack of a jump command but rather the game itself being poorly done lol. Also, what does lack of animation for walking/running have to do with anything? That is actually important to a video game, plenty of games exists where you can't jump, which clearly means it's not this make or break game mechanic. Lots of people's first MMOs were MUDs, actually, but I guess you illustrated the problem with MMORPG gamers these days and why some people feel WoW invented the genre.
no, i am saying in other words that the game will be better with jump than without and there is no consequence.
many small brooks will form a big river, and jump is one of these brooks.
but it is important. right now with no jump you ar basically glued to the ground and cant walk down simple ledges, and if you can walk down, there is no animation for it. basically you are just sliding down. and if sliding down things is compeetely perfect, then why isnt sliding around enough for an animation instead of walking animation?Quote:
You have to be trolling, nor could have posted this without laughing at yourself. Animation is crucial to interactive media, Jumping is in no way, shape or form on the same level of importance to a video game lol.
Actually no, it doesn't. This particular issue goes one way only.
A huge swath of people were incredibly annoyed at FFXIV's outdated and clunky character movement and the omission of a basic jump function. Including the ability to jump wouldn't piss off anyone except small minority of FFXI fanboys who decided long ago that jumping was bad simply because WoW has it.
The only other MMOs that haven't included the ability to jump are sprite-based games where the camera is locked into a top-down, isometric view. That's not the same as a 3D game where you have full control of the camera.
Again, IF they add jumping then it should be entirely situational. I.e high ledge that our characters should be able to reach if they jump, allow the player to jump then and grab the ledge. (Think FFXIV-2). Characters should also be able to swim above water in pools and such. And underneath in certain areas. (Could be part of the Leviathan fight).
But, also allow free jumping that only lets characters lift of the ground a few inches. While running, the character should be able to jump forward.
PS. So that Lalas don't look too ridiculous doing this, let them propell themselves upward by jumping off the wall of the ledge.
(Ie Lala climbs a but then jumps higher and grabs ledge).
Could you imagine how ridiculously high the Chocobo would be able to jump?
Not that I'm opposed to it though, IF it has a purpose, Having areas that are only accessible by Chocobo could be something to consider since Chocobos are fairly easy to get and non-exclusive, on the other hand having chocobos able to jump just for the sake of being able to jump without any purpose to it other than having it seems kind of pointless. and i shudder at the thought of jump-spam (if you've played FlyFF early on you can kind of feel where i'm coming from with this) there's nothing more irritating than entering an area filled with players and everyone is just jumping, no reason, just jumping, especially if you want lol immersion .
Different functionality != different stats. In other games, e.g. FFT A2, different chocobo colors had different functions, almost different jobs even. It's more like customizing the automaton in FFXI- e.g. the black chocobos would fly, yellow ones had a healing ability, red ones had a fire attack, etc. They're distinct enough that each one has value. If it was just stats I would agree, but different breeds of chocobos did different things in previous games. There's a precedent for that.Quote:
The only issue I have with making different colored chocobos have different abilities is that you get into the whole color=stats thing we had with gear that nobody liked. If you bred for abilities/colors separately it would be great.
I for one am very glad they are adding jump for the characters. One thing I always hated with both FFXI and XIV is being glued to the ground and coming back from Star Wars: The Old Republic just made me want it more. Jump adds so much more to the game, how many times haven't people wished they could jump in FF MMO because of a knee-high elevation? In my option if it means I have to wait an extra month or two so that they can design a level that doesn't limit my character movement in any way I'm more than happy to. If I want to jump down that cliff and die, let me! I see no downsides whatsoever to adding jump, getting stuck somewhere? There is always that return feature we have and I don't see how it's any different than falling through the ground, all MMOs have bugs but the good thing with todays games, everything can be patched.
So yeah I welcome jump with open arms and hope in the future they add swimming too and don't say it's not FF, you could swim in FFX.
As far as letting mounts jump should depend on the mount. A Gobbou or Drake should not be able to jump but a chocobo should be, it doesn't have to be a jump 10 feet in the air the bird still have someone sitting on its back so around the same height your character would jump will do.
Don't limit yourself because the past games didn't have a feature, should FFXI and XIV have random encounters because FFX had them? FFXIV needs more players, not chase them away because some hardcore players don't want anything to change.
Step 1: Look at a Gobbue. Take a note of the folds of loose flabby skin
Step 2: Watch videos of old or obese people jumping
Step 3: Consider the effects jumping would have on the folds of skin on a Gobbue
Step 4: Re examine the question ... do you REALLY want mounts to jump.
Contextual jump, like Zelda, or FFXIII, please.(Yes, very different types) Would make dungeons and newly accessible areas more fun to explore. Standing around in place and doing an awkward looking hop is just... cosmetic. Why? What does it bring to the game?
You know you can do all those contextual jumps with a manual jump, which imo is much more fun than contextual jump. And the jump (not counting the Lalafel) doesn't look awkward at all, it looks pretty cool actually.

Are you guys really that afraid that people will just stand there and jump that you would not allow yourself all the good stuff and freedom that jump would bring to the game?
I think advocating free jump is really only for those that want to free jump whenever they please. So to answer your question, yes. Contextual jump where if you move forward and there's a spot where jumping makes sense is perfectly reasonable and would loads of depth to in-game possibilities. In Zelda, you could jump anywhere at a certain height above you, and control the direction and angle you jump off of things. This is as much as is necessary. I can think of loads of scenarios where this would be practical and effective, from a development/programming viewpoint and for adding depth and creativity to content in the game.
Whereas, being able to have control over whether you're standing up jumping at a fixed height and the same animation every time would add nothing to the value of FFXIV that hasn't already been done in other games, in which that context of jumping is both appropriate and necessary. As the game stands now, free jumping is asthetic. Imaginary boundaries and the layout of the world of Eorzea, do not require nor advocate the necessity for this.
