Petition to Keep Balmung Server Locked

Kinda ironic to me since Balmung has been one of the nicest servers I've ever been on regardless of MMO community, though I will say that a good majority of our problem children left when the chance was given to them. One in particular I had to pass along the lodestone for just last week because of the extended levels of harassment people endured from them before they left for a Preferred World. To which I am endlessly sorry for the masses who play there.

At this point Balmung's reputation is just as much of a meme as Dragoon's tanking the floor. There were/are genuine reasons behind it, but for the most part it's just a loud and frankly unwelcome minority that caused the stigma. A minority I will say most people on Balmung do not even like.

As for the lock, personally I'd rather they fix their server issues before doing anything about it. Balmung has the lowest player distribution of any Aether realm but conversely we have the most active server by leaps and bounds. With the current state of the servers it would wreck havoc if they opened it again. Though I DO want them to eventually open it as the lack of new blood hasn't helped our economy, but I'm more than willing to wait. (I also have alts on other servers already, so it's no skin off my back.)

You could solve this by putting the threads where they should be. In the worlds/balmung area of the forum. This isn't a general topic it's a Balmung topic. Putting it in general just invites poeple from other servers to add their two cents and you may not like what you hear from them.

As to your "detailed reasons why you want the server open", The server is overloaded and that causes problems for your world and your data center. It's not going to be reopened because you or anyone else on your server make threads over and over about opening it. It will reopen when the population drops low enough to make room for more people and not before.

Accept it. Move on. If it really is unbearable for you, stop waiting for someone else to solve the problem and simply move to a server that is open and welcomes role players.

This seems pointless when we all know it's staying locked for a long, long time.

Sadly most of the hate is just from people wanting to hate things, and Balmung sticks out. It's sad to see how outraged people get against things that have absolutely no affect on them.

I know you probably didnt mean it like that, but considering Balmung has atleast once crashed the entire datacenter it's on, I'd say atleast those who share datacenter with you are VERY much so affected if Balmung is opened too early

I don't rp, I don't care if balmung has RP on it or not. I'm just here since I've been here for a very, very long time and don't want to leave it since I've built up my wealth and roots here. I have a personal house, it's nice. I run a small FC of a few friends and it's nice. I could move to a smaller server and lose what I've built up over the years, but that would kind of be trading off one thing for another.

As a FC leader and generally active Balmung player though, it just feels so devoid of fresh blood. I'm not going to reiterate what other people have said that annoyed others since I'll just get called entitled for it, but me, personally, I'm in kind of a bind. I'm choosing between what I've worked hard to get over the years and meeting and helping new people to the game. I love to mentor, but there's no opportunity here :(

I will admit that moving to another server has crossed my mind many times over. I just can't justify losing everything I built up at this time. I am waiting for now, but I would love to be around more new people to the game.

We now have a better idea of how intertwined the servers are on a datacenter, but the hatred and rude comments have existed well before any of the crashing started. I do agree that they need to keep things closed until the worlds have stabilized.

Speaking of the crashing - It was a bit eye-opening how the forums mostly turned and blamed the players of Balmung instead of placing the blame at SE's piss-poor infrastructure and handling of the situation. SE is the only one who knows the true state of the servers, and they chose not to fully close down the server until it was at a critical level and causing crashes. But it's still somehow our fault. :X

Ah, perhaps I should have explained myself. I do highly agree that Balmung should be locked, and I recognize the problems that it causes, but the hate I'm talking about extends beyond that. I don't think it's just cognitive dissonance, but I've seen a lot more vitriol thrown at Balmung than Gilgamesh when the two were equal.

I doubt it will be unlocked.

Until the active playerbase drops under 15k, it will most likely stay closed. And if it does open again, it will still most likely be character creation locked. ( transfers only)

I think the largest reason why people don't like Balmung was, unfortunately, because of more reasons aside from the server crashes. I remember a time when I was interested in Balmung but then that interest turned into dislike when, at every live letter, someone would be in the comments section spamming BALMUNG #1, THE BEST, ALL OTHER SERVERS ARE DEAD in the chat section. It didn't help that other people on Balmung, no matter how polite, continued with statements such as 'I don't want to be on a dead server'. To me, and I think I can assume to many others as well, this was highly disrespectful because for the servers we did end up on/choose to play on we've met friends and families that we've made memories with that we wouldn't want to trade for anything else; and for Balmung to say others servers sucked compared to theirs is a huge slap to the face. This coupled with the fact that some of the more elitist Balmung players would come into the forums to put on a show that if we weren't a part of Balmung then we weren't even worth talking to just made the tension rise even higher. If anything it wasn't us that segregated Balmung players from xiv players, its Balmung players that made it 'its Balmung vs. the rest of the servers'. I've seen some well-meaning Balmung people posting in the forums but unfortunately the bad outshines the good and, like anything in this world, it takes a thousand good deeds to erase a bad one.

I believe the reputation is more due to the RP, ERP, glamour requests in live letters, weird threads, and many other things that happening repeatedly for years. And it just became a running joke.

OP, you should petition for Yoship to Odin slash Balmurg server into two, so we we don't need to see those open up Balmurg server selfish request. Your server is locked because of overpopulation that impacting the login server share by other servers

That definitely wouldn't create more of an uproar *gigantic eye roll*

Perhaps instead of asking SE to butcher servers, it's time to petition them to update their shoddy infrastructure so that a single server cannot crash a whole dataserver.

It is exactly this kind of behavior that makes us not have any respect for you guys. Why should SE have to invest time and money into strengthening only ONE server? I'm sorry to break the news but there are other live, ACTIVE, worlds out there that you guys are missing out on just because you want to isolate yourself to one server. We're living out here, outside your guys 10 foot wall of isolation.

Because it seems you've missed all my other posts, I am for keeping the server locked until things are stabilized. However, lets not pretend that SE's servers are fantastic and aren't in need of help. How any times have have you seen the excuse used that <insert random item/feature> cannot be implemented due to the stress it would place on the servers?

As mentioned before, I have been part of a server lock before, and sometimes these things have to happen. I am completely OK with SE doing what they need to do with their current setup to prevent things crashing and burning. That does not mean they should be happy with the situation they've made for themselves and not work to improve it for the future.

With all that said, heaven forbid people want to have their server be open. It's nice being able to invite spouses, friends, make alts or even just have new blood coming to the server to spice things up. People act like it's the most selfish thing in the world to hope that their server gets unlocked.

Tbh, and I mean COMPLETELY honest, I have never ever seen that in my life before, lol (Aside from the launch of SB but that was because of a DDOS.) It's unfortunate seeing what's happening on Balmung but personally I am happy seeing more people trickle into the less populated servers so that people can have more friends to RP/create memories with than just on one server. The RP community on mine have been so hard working and extremely nice that its kinda cool seeing them grow since the lock on Balmung.

But then we'd have to cry Balmung Limitations every time we don't get something cuz all the money went into your server.

I think it's quite ridiculous to hate an entire server because a few people out of the 20k made it look bad for you, but by all means go ahead. It's just human nature after all.

Pretty great how this thread went from decent satire to just people being petty and pathetic.

We get it, it's cool to hate Balmung. It doesn't stop you from looking like a tool when you get personal about it.

I wouldn't say hate, but extreme dislike and annoyance that you guys demand to be treated any differently than any other server out there. SE didn't make you guys special snowflakes. You did that on your own when you began declaring you guys were the central hub for RP, something SE never wanted, hence why they will never declare an official RP server.

Some history for the masses. Back in 2010, there had actually been a poll amongst the players to try and figure out which server to name as the unofficial RP server. Besaid won the poll.

When ARR launched About 18 months before ARR launched, Fabul and Besaid merged to create Balmung, bringing the unofficial RP server title with it. So there you have it. It's not so much that we suddenly began declaring ourselves anything, it's that the early players of XIV 1.0 had put the decision to a vote and settled on Besaid, which eventually became Balmung.

Besaid and Fabul merged into Balmung before 2.0 launched, not for the launch. It was around 6-12 months before the servers shut down IIRC.

Edit: Looks like around Feb of 2012. 18 months before 2.0 launched.

Ah, thank you for the correction! I was not playing at the very end of 1.xx - I just know I was placed on Balmung when ARR launched.

Honestly, I hope it stays locked. Lets others try out different servers.

See, this is what I've been saying. You lump those small minority who think that way with the majority of Balmung.

Not everybody thinks that way. I never demanded anyone to treat Balmung like it's special.
Also other servers were free to do also make their servers the RP hub and nobody was stopping them. I've never heard of SE disapproving that at all.

By the way, official RP servers won't help with anything.

It wouldn't be investing time and money into ONE server, it'd be coding a solution into the mess of ancient code so that a crash WON'T happen on the Data Center while one server becomes a superpower on it's own.
