And on the third hand that grew out of my back, you could also use the argument to ask why this game was changed from 2.0 and should've stayed the same way then because the devs chose to make it that way. See where I'm getting at? :D

I feel you guys as far as glamour being the "true" endgame... but I don't really understand the point of view as to have the "race" attire to be used by other races.
I mean sure, I will first say that I don't see what would be wrong with allowing people to wear whatever they want.
Secondly though, if you think about it, is this really a priority the devs should have? Because wearing the other race's attire is kinda tacky if you aren't that race. If you are American and suddenly you decided to wear a full kimono and getta sandals to work, that is your choice of course. But isn't it a just a little bit weird?
Maybe you guys can explain it to me. I know this is a fantasy game of course, and maybe you are just saying to wear it as a stylistic choice and you don't really care about the context of the games story but....still...why those clothes?
I see so many threads like this asking a simple question "Why not?" in regard to some specific minor change... and all I can think of is "But why tho?"

Well, you should've just said that from the beginning because although it's not a good an argument as you think, it's much better than your first. You're still willfully ignoring the point of Alacran's post though. He did not say the devs did everything on purpose and/or everything should stay the same. He was essentially pointing out out that the hempen sets were just one aspect clearly designed with a vision and not everything needs to be changed.
Of course they're going to change stuff because ideas that were good 4 years ago or even 4 months ago may not seem so great now. The point is maybe, just maybe the devs still currently really like some of their ideas (e.g. racial gear) so why should they be forced to change that?
FFXI did RSE way better than FFXIV. Mithra RSE was a loincloth because they were a tribe of jungle cat people. And you could go to Kazham and see a bunch of mithra NPCs wearing the RSE loincloth. You didn't need to be told why only mithra wore that because it was obvious through the world building. However, in FFXIV I need someone to explain why only miqo'te are allowed to wear this sexy schoolgirl halloween costume RSE, because it doesn't really seem evocative of their tribal roots and there's no miqo'te city where all the NPCs run around in miniskirts.
To me it seems like FFXIV has RSE because FFXI did and that's it. I wouldn't be opposed to having new RSE but they would have to do some work to make it believable as RSE for me to not immediately be asking for the one I think looks the best to be equippable by my race too.
True! But for this specific point about hempen sets being locked.. we already had a pages long debate back and forth with the last thread. So in all honesty I'm not willing to potentially do it again even if you never had the intention anyway.. Fact is, no ones is forcing SE in the end. But what SE has done was express their interest in actually changing it, with more than one response on it that almost everyone probably saw. And they created a Hyur NPC with Elezen racial gear on which was never before seen until after the request about the hempen gear.
Whether or not it was an NPC doesn't matter because they still have to create the model that otherwise didn't exist.
End point is, they do show that they might want to do it. Not being forced to do it.
EDIT: They also could've just said "no". Or "we can't" like so many times before. But they didn't.
I would like the hempen sets unlocked for all races, simply because some of the other races sets look better or would go better with glam ideas(I really like the Elezen lady hempen top and would love to wear it on my Roegadame).
If people are hung up on "lore reasons" they can simply add "Roegadyn Fashion Designer" to Limsa that sells Roegadyn-style fashions but tailored for other races, or maybe gives a quest that allows DoH to learn how to craft the outfits(the outfits would be low level WVR/LTW stuff, but let all DoH do the quest). Bada bingo, lore reasons are satisfied(There's really no reason an Elezen can't think "Man, I really like that Hyuran Chemisette. If only I could get one tailored to fit me. If only there was some sort of tailor that could tail clothing!")
It's precisely because they're not an indie company that they can't implement this change all willy nilly. They have budgets and development roadmaps planned out months and years in advance. They don't just walk into the office every morning and go "well, what should we do today? Huh, we need more artists? OPEN THE MONEY VAULTS ASAP!" Adding the hempen sets to every race would require what I can only assume is a handful of artists and 3d modelers and whoever else. If SE hasn't decided to work on this already, then yes, that literally means taking them off of and therefore detracting from more important stuff like new tome sets and other glamour items. They could outsource it, but again, there's a budget to keep in mind. It probably wouldn't be super expensive, but maybe they feel that money would be better spent elsewhere.
Again, I wanna stress the fact that I am in favor of this change. I also just want to stress the fact that this isn't as simple and clear cut as people make it out to be. It's obviously not as complicated as fixing the housing crisis for example, but it's still something that takes time and planning.
Someone is probably gonna get mad at me for trying to be reasonable again though. I don't know why I even bother tbh...
If anything, they should bring back the undergarment slot. The default underwear has to go.
It's less that anyone is making this clear cut and more just that people want to see it happen, and that it is possible. I was simply addressing that it is not as if them deciding to work on this will ultimately take away from anything else. No one can prove that, so it is pointless to say. Even in their own excuse, they wanted only 1 dungeon for odd numbered patches for extra content like eureka, ultimate, stuff like bard songs, etc. We were supposed to get those this patch. Most were delayed. There was no equivalent exchange as people like to argue.
In all honesty, the only RSE that makes "sense" in terms of appearance is probably the Au Ra set - and even there, I still feel it works more for xaela than for raen. But the rest of the gear on other races? I have absolutely no idea how it relates to their culture or history at all.
I'm all for tearing down unnecessary locks on gear and glamour items. While the RSE makes little sense to me, it's fine to have those locked for whatever lore purposes one wishes to justify them with somehow - but.... come on. Underwear is race-based? Lmao.
Where it's frustrating is that a lot of the designs are basic, ordinary clothing shapes; to use an example, if the Miqo'te female top is deemed to be too cultural to share, can we at least get a similar vest for everyone else with different stitching or dye patterns or something? For males, can we please have some kind of actual loincloth all jobs can wear? Why can't anyone wear halternecks other than a single subset of Hyur? And how relevant are these items anyway? My friend only knew they existed because I bought her a set for a POTD adventure the other day, it's not as though they feature heavily in the lore or background like the FFXI equivalent. Race optimisation is fine when it makes sense, like tail decorations or ear pouches (however controversial). This does not make sense.
I think even slightly modified patterns or stitching to make the racial variants special would be fine so long as the gaps in our wardrobes are filled. It's easier for them to adapt the existing designs than make up new ones though - most (if not all) will only need the modelling team rather than going all the way back to the drawing board - so it makes sense to press for that as a solution. S-E is plainly interested in helping so second-guessing their resource management skills doesn't seem worthwhile.
The original racial sets I agree should stay racial, even if the relation they have to their races' actual cultures seem dubious at best. It's still the case that all the promotions and advertisements featuring these races show them in their race-specific starter gear, so those items really do have a strong racial association to them from the get-go.
The hempen sets, however... I don't have an issue with spreading these around. Perhaps the split variants could be named things like "Highlander Chemise" or "Elezen Underpants" to keep the original racial source in memory.
That said, I can't decide whether seeing a Lala girl decked out in Highlander bondage undies would be more hilarious or disturbing...
They can already wear bikinis and do this, I think that's the last thing anyone should worry about.
Why would I want to see muscly Roedagyn/Elezen/Highlander/Au Ra male wearing female version hempen garb?
I mean people have their own kinks, but I am good enough seeing people wear yoga pants locally where I live in IRL. I don't need to see some unisex skimpy outfits in game. Hi Blade and Soul.
'
What are you talking about? This is about female Lalafell wearing female Highlander underwear (and other combinations like that).
A lot of the male underwear is already skimpier than the female versions since there's no need to cover our breasts. If you hate unisex gear, just avoid wearing it and move on with your life.
So I suppose we just shouldn't ask for anything? Why is housing more important? Some people live for glamour. Some people live for housing. Some people it's the Raids. It's almost as if all players have their own interests in game. Also, the devs will do what they like. It's not like they ABSOLUTELY MUST FOCUS ON UNLOCKING HEMPEN simply because there is a thread asking for it.
How dare people complain about more than one thing when they don't care about housing but instead care about clothes. We're still (separately) complaining about the game's issues with male glamour, so don't worry, this thread hasn't brought about anything new there. But I don't think your personal opinion that housing is more important carries more weight than mine.
(The housing team monitoring server strain and expansion are not the same as the people who model the clothes we wear, by the way.)
I am so sick of this, "don't complain about something because then it'll lead to complaining about something else," mentality.
Don't complain about housing because then people will complain if it becomes instanced/FC only/more expensive/easier to get and less exclusive.
Yes yes, and one more time YES!!
I really hate this idea. However, if it's so important to give Female Highlander gear to cat girls, the option should go to everyone. Make it available to males as well. It's only equality if all can use them.
Personally i want more race/ gender specific gear. It would help dive more into the lore of the different races in the game.
There are so many better ways to dive into lore without locking clothes to a particular race man. I don't know why you think a cat girl's miniskirt has deep enough lore significance to treat it like artifact armor...
Please unlock hempen sets so all variants are available to all races kthx. I won't even demand they be gender unlocked either! (Though that would be cool.)
The details make the lore all the better. Small aspects of a region, cultural influences, and traditions can be found in everything from design, material used, and What activities are tide to said garments.
Highlanders live in a desert climate, roughly sew their clothing together, and are fiercely proud of their powerful physique/ builds.
Take a look at the Ala Mhigan gear, see if there are any clues to this mind set.

( a better picture should have been used, but short on time atm.)
What do we see here? Light hide armor made with plenty of breathing room for a desert climate, made to showcase a powerful build. I do not feel this is a coincidence.
I see a lot of metal bits that'll soak up heat from that hot desert sun, sandals that just beg the enemy to cut off some toes and his Achilles heel, and bunch of black to absorb even more of that killer desert suns heat. In conclusion, it's little wonder Highlanders of Ala Mhiga were conquered by the Garleans. They're too into fashion to create some proper battlegear. Why did we liberate them again? Cheaper designer handbags?
Thank you for this thread. I'm definitely pro unlock, but these responses are next level. I haven't laughed this hard in awhile I literally can't breathe.
the underwear doesn't bring any racial identity
especially with how frilly the female au ra set is
doesn't really match au ra at all
and the male elezen set is basically longer sleeve version of the shi sui sets for males
i think SOME of the hair could be open up to more races
not so much the ones with the actual spikes coming out but like the hime cut or the buzz cut
im all for more racial identity and clothing
but the hempen sets being locked is pretty dumb with how simple they all are
I think when it comes to the hempen sets, is that their variations are designed for the particular race/clan that wears it. Each variation would have to be redesigned to fit the mold of all the other races. I'm not opposing this restriction lift as far as the variations go as I really want the Highlander version for my Midlander, but it will clearly take some time for all the combinations. Considering how unappealing a lot of recent gear has been, I definitely wouldn't mind if they tossed some resources at this long awaited request.
The same could be said about Domans, but they get the spotlight. One is lauded while the other is demeaned... funny how that goes, nice to see how little the story means to some though. However i will give you points on the sandals though, i really hate those things and for the life of me can't find a foot option that goes with the set.

What? I did NOT say one nice thing about the Domans. I actually didn't say anything about the Domans. Why are we suddenly talking about Domans?
*sigh* Fine I'll say something "nice" about he Domans so in retrospect you'll be right ok? *ahem* The Domans at least give us nice sushi and with their freedom access to some nice and stylish property. The Ala Mhigans on the other hand give us access to sand, scrub brush, and rocks... Wait a minute, I just got it. Ala Mhigans are FFs orcs! Do they eat rocks too?
Yoo can have mah underwear, but yoo'll never take... mah hairstyle!
I thought it was so we could have access to that not-racially-locked Ala Mhigan gear.
IF the gear is suited to the climate, then all the races that live there are going to want to wear it. At very least there's a Hellsguard population that are going to have similar taste in gear.
I don't see any reason to assume they "roughly sew their clothing together" though - here or elsewhere. They wear the same types of neatly-made clothing the other races do, and have the same starter gear as Midlanders!
yes pls i can get behind this
