I'd be surprised if a Garlean could utilize incarnate summoning when they can't manipulate aether.
I do expect Zenos to be on some kind of power trip if he's the final boss, though.
Something I've just thought about.

That is a huge flag. I know MMOs tend to build the environment much larger than normal due to stuff like camera angles, but that is in an oversized scale of its own.
Also, I'm pretty sure I've seen that symbol before, but I've completely forgotten what it means. Could someone please refresh my memory?
Considering Zenos is mentioned as becoming somewhat interested in Doman culture (in particular, gaining a fancy for the katana, which is his preferred weapon), and that Kan-E-Senna mentioned the Doman refugees in Eorzea immediately identified Ilberd's last gasp as Shinryu, based on a "old Doman legend", it's entirely possible that Zenos came to the exact same conclusion as the Doman refugees, that the 'unknown eikon' was a god dragon from Doman legends, and named it accordingly.
Or else he was already informed of it by the Ascians - hells it was Elidibus who all but instructed Ilberd how to summon in the first place (by giving him Nidhogg's eyes to do so), Elidibus might have also been in Zenos's ear as well, playing the two sides against each other, it fits the Ascians' MO after all (remember they've done that in the past with Thordan the VIIth already, nudging him into summoning Knights of the Round).
The more I think of it, the more it seems the whole reason he's finally excited about the cold war between Eorzea and the Empire finally going hot is less at he can now have a war to fight in, and more that he's excited about what that will inevitably entail, the prospect of facing down in battle Eorzea's champion, the one the XIVth Legion called the Eikon Slayer - us, the Warrior of Light! Where there is a Primal, inevitably we'd be dispatched to deal with it, and thus all he has to do is then show up and he gets a worthy adversary that he can revel in.
Throwing away countless lives on both sides means nothing to him as you mentioned. Just as long as he gets the battle to end all battles against the most powerful warrior on Hydaelyn (lets face it, the Warrior of Light technically is), he's happy. He's like some cannibal god, rejoicing in the ruin of his own temple as it burns down around him. Hence it makes him far more dangerous than Gaius or even Nael ever were.
Oh I have no doubt Yotsuyu is nothing but a shameless quisling who will either a) be overthrown by the Domans and disposed of accordingly, or B) will have to be taken down by us to liberate Doma - the scenes in the Revolutions video makes it clear she is basically a cruel, cold-hearted villainness (driven home when she is shown apparently stomping down on Gosetsu's head with a glare that could melt lead). It's clear SE doesn't want the player to like her or sympathize with her at all (even less so than Zenos probably), and they made that plain in the video.
Fordola to me though comes across as more a reluctant Garlean collaborator - Ala Mhigan born but drafted in the Empire while being shunned by both, she hence to me appears more likely the one to actually swap sides once the excrement really starts hitting the fan as hostilities heat up and the revolutions on both sides of the world start making inroads - she comes across to me as FFXIV's version of Beatrix from FFIX. So yeah, I am definitely intrigued by her as a character and really look forward to finding out more about her story and motivations (I just hope I didn't get things horribly wrong and find SE has pulled a bait and switch on me and turned her into the cold hearted monster and instead make Yotsuyu more sympathetic.) :p
That flagpole is also shown at other points in the video with a Garlean banner, so it's clear that scene shows the moment Ala Mhigo falls to the Alliance/Resistance (further given weight by M'naago on it blowing on a horn), therefore that banner is either the flag of the Eorzean Alliance or the Ala Mhigan Resistance. Personally I don't think it's the Resistance, as the Ala Mhigan flag would suffice for that, so the Alliance would be a better fit. Either way, that had me wondering as well (no doubt it's something we'll find out soon enough in a month or so. ;)).
I think he will have a depth to him in a sense but he is clearly designed to be a villain that we will want to hate even if he is a major badass. He will have his reasons and drive but they will be reasons that will be monstrous and cruel. There is something to be said for a villain that isn't cruel for some personal reason but rather simply because they just don't care enough about anyone else that happens to be in their way.
In the purge after Doma's rebellions were crushed, which Zenos oversaw, anyone involve or even supporting the rebellion was executed along with their families. Which would be more sinister? If he did it because he was angry at the rebellion or he did it because he saw it as effective and just held so little care for the loss of life that families getting publicly butchered didn't even phase him?
Fordola may turn against both the empire and ala mhigo... hating the empire and ala mhigo both equally and placing blame on both for forcing the trajectory or her life in such a way.... alone, angry and a skilled warrior... this makes a dangerous combination.... how much whispering in her ear from the ascians would it take for her to go to exteme measures to exact revenge on those she feels wronged her.... if she lives I think we will have quite a silent threat to watch out for

My memory was a bit foggy - in the scene in question Zenos states verbatim that his spies have informed him the Domans named Shinryu. I'd still question how that information traveled as quickly as it did, though... then again, the Garleans are pretty big into tech, and even Eorzeans have Linkpearls (basically cell phones), though that's easy to forget when Minfilia isn't calling with new orders every 5 minutes.
As for Zenos looking forward to this war so he can face us in battle... it's reasonable enough. We're a beacon of hope for Eorzeans, but I'm honestly very surprised the Garleans don't flee in terror when they realize who they're up against. Since he's stated to revel in combat it makes sense that Zenos wouldn't (and would in fact seek us out to push his limits) - even though we're (in)famous for going through just about everything that stands in our way.
Yotsuyu... I think it's a little too early to really make a proper judgment call (this arguably applies to all the characters, even the seemingly one-dimensional Zenos). While she is stated and shown to be cruel and ruthless, her bio on the official site states she believes herself to be the "hero of [her] own story," suggesting there's a motivation behind her callousness beyond sadism for its own sake. What that is I could not venture to guess, though.
Fordola, though... well, because of her unique circumstances, she is the villain I am most interested in. She is where things get morally complex, not the "power-hungry tyrants hiding behind environmental health concerns" we get from the Garleans. Long story short: while it might be a shithole of a home, Imperial Ala Mhigo is her home, for better or worse. Liberating Ala Mhigo isn't terribly different from her perspective to Garlemald's conquest of Ala Mhigo is to Lyse (and most everyone outside the Empire), which may be why she appears to be Lyse's rival. Not to mention how the Empire (and Zenos in particular) treats conquered peoples... while it's easy to conclude she will defect when things start getting serious, I remain unconvinced. It depends on where her true loyalties lie, and I'm anxious to find out either way.
As for Zenos using incarnate summoning... well, it could be interesting, esp. if he incarnate summons a more powerful Susano-o (i.e. using his full name, Takehaya Susano-o no Mikoto), but the vast majority of Garleans cannot manipulate aether, and I have a hard time believing they'd pull the same cat out of the bag a third time. What Zenos' endgame is (assuming he has one) is anyone's guess, but that combined with the Garleans' atheism makes it a tough sell.
Did anyone else notice that during the part of the song where y'shtola blocks zenos' sword the lyrics specifically "she shall die."
The lyrics are actually probably "she shall guide", as "Trust in grace / and she shall die" doesn't make much sense in the context of the verse (which is warning the listener against being blinded by faith in justice, and instead to turn to grace). This MAY be a death flag for Shtola, but as this game has a habit of subverting death flags (Aymeric has dozens) and as Y'Shtola is practically the face of the game merch-wise, I'm not gonna get to worried about her fate.
Yep. She was the FFXIV stand-in in both Dissidia and Theathrhythm, probably because she's the most prominent catgirl the game has to offer, so I don't see her going anywhere anytime soon. And I'm glad about that too. I feel like she's the only Scion that gets shit done right away! Boss ass besh right there.
Yeah, they're highly unlikely to kill off Y'shtola, given that she's the stand in for FFXIV where other titles are concerned. She's also - in my opinion - one of the more nuanced Scions, given that she wasn't afraid to call out Merlwyb for the hypocrisy involving dealings with the Kobolds and Sahagin. I would like it very much if she served as the voice of reason to call out her allies if they seek to go too far during 4.0 and beyond. She recognised the merit in temporarily teaming up with Regula, after all.
I also believe that it said "guide" not "die". Otherwise that would be one massive spoiler.
Sorry for the little off topic: I found that scene with her and Merlwyb kinda interesting, since calling someone out is really easy but I was wondering what she herself would have done if she needed to take care of a whole city/country. IMO its always easy to point fingers but sometimes I wonder how the scions would solve the problems if they are in charge. (Also kinda funny since the scions still dont have a solution to stop the primals from being summoned..they most of the time only react when its too late.)
But I do kinda wonder how many of the shown characters are still alive after the expansion. I believe that most of the scions will survive this, since they already lost quite some people in 2.0 and 3.0. (I mean its not only the main scions that died for us) The new roe guy just really has a lot of death flags imo and also Yugiri is on that list. I still hope that we will go out of this with our allies alive but after HW..well I just stay realistic and hope that my last two or three liked characters are going to make it. x)
I find it silly to knock the Scions for not having a solution to Primals considering there's, like, no easy solution to it, lol? That's kind of the whole point! The vaunted wisdom of Allag could only contain them, but time and time again we've seen their containments fail--especially considering the Tempering process can occur with them contained. (And it's going to be impossible to convince someone not to mess with something for all of eternity, so it's gonna happen).
We could look to Varis' solution, but is genocide really something you want to advocate? Not to mention that's going to cause more summonings before it causes less.
First 15 seconds the adder guy wearing serpent grand marshal uniform , ;_; SE what happened to old one
ALL THE AU RA NPCS ARE SO PRETTY AND THEY WEAR EVERYTHING SO WELL.
ALSO ITS SUPER INTERESTING TO KNOW WHAT AN OLD AU RA LADY LOOKS LIKE.
I can't wait to learn of Fordola's story.
Also is it me or is anyone else slightly annoyed by how Lyse can't seem to hold her ground against Fordola even though she went head to head with Livia sas Junius as Yda?
Always remember that trailers are many times cut in such a way as to hide how things are truly happening. Its entirely possible that Lyse has the upper hand in every fight with Fordola and we are just seeing the parts where she manages to hold her own. Its also possible that Fordola is actually very skilled. Hell for all we know she could be one of Hydaelyn's chosen (and you certainly wouldn't see THAT in one of the trailers).
No, not at all. I very much enjoy it when overconfident, hypocritical protagonists are humbled by nuanced antagonists. Lyse lied about her identity and is now pushing a very powerful individual to commit to a brutal war that is inevitably going to lead to an immense amount of suffering and death on both sides. The least that can happen to Lyse is being pushed around a bit by someone who just happens to be a better or more aggressive fighter than she is.
The video definitely gave me some more hype. I am really looking forward to the stories of Fordola and Yotsuyu in particular as they seem to have potential for a lot of depth. I am also curious if we will get to go to Ala Mhigo proper (as we still have yet to see anything of the city proper yet) and what shape Doma will be in. As Yotsuyu is the current viceroy of Doma, I believe it is still standing to some extent--though it appears to be flooded in areas. I do hope it is not another 'Sharlayan' situation, where we mainly have access to ruins of a city. I hope we are able to liberate and slowly rebuild the city. It seems we will be taking the fight to both fronts-- Ala Mhigo and Doma--so I'm looking forward to seeing how both will be incorporated into the story. It seems as if we already have our reason to go into the former, so I think that's where we'll start. It will be interesting to see the interaction between the Ala Mhigan resistance members and those who were born in Ala Mhigo after they were taken over by the Empire (characters like Fordola). There is a lot of potential there. I am a little bit concerned that not everyone will get out of our ventures in Othard and Gyr Abania unscathed however-- some of the scenes in the trailer were troubling.
My point was more to show how its easy to point fingers at things but that solving the problem itself might not be that easy itself. And if you take care of a whole country then a possible good solution can turn into a catastrophic ending really fast. So Y'shtola might have been in the right to point it out but it does not change the fact that she is not the one in charge thus does not have to make those decisions herself. (I at least would not want to be in the position of making such choices)
And who knows maybe in SB we or more Lyse will realize that its not that easy to take Ala Mhigo back and that maybe some people will even be opposed to it. But seeing how we managed to stop that long dragon/human war, I am quite sure that everything will be fine in the end. (Not sure if this is good or bad as storytelling)
I wouldn't say necessarily bad on it's own but context is important here. We are to believe the WoL and a ragtag group of rebels just waltz into not only one, but two annexed territories of the most powerful country on the 3 great continents. Idk how the story will pan out obviously but I can't shake the feeling that they'll liberate both locations much easier than they should. For all the build up about how the garleans are this big global threat they are shown to be incompetent time and time again, at the thing they are supposed to be the best at no less.
... or it could just be that, you know, trying to fight someone armed with a sword and shield while unarmed is a reeeeeeeeeally bad idea. (Also implying that Zenos would not have jumped at the first opportunity to go to war with Eorzea that presented itself, which based on what we know of his character seems extremely unlikely.)
Anyway, there are a number of reasons for Fordola being able to go one-on-one with Lyse. The former is armed, the latter is not; Fordola could be a match for Lyse in terms of skill; the villains need to be competent to pose a threat, especially since we're going into this one with our blessing still intact; and I do believe that, given they're seen clashing twice, Fordola is going to be Lyse's rival character, so they need to be about even in skill and power. Lyse could hold her own against Livia because that was a straight fight - against Fordola, she's at a rather significant range disadvantage.
P.S. Zenos is Yoshi-P's answer to people liking and agreeing with Gaius and the Garleans in general. Don't forget that.
Livia was clad in armour from head to toe and had the ability to shoot bullets from her fists. That didn't stop Lyse from confronting her head on. It's a Final Fantasy game - so the 'realism' isn't the same realism that applies to the real world and a lot of combat is going to be driven by 'rule of cool' above all else, I feel. I also remember Lyse running right up to a Morbol and punching it in one of the low level duties - and whilst that may be a matter of gameplay and story segregation she's clearly not weak but that doesn't mean Fordola isn't just a better fighter. Which, honestly, is sorely needed at a point where it feels like pretty much every single major ally of the Warrior of Light is able to hold their own against the vast majority of foes that they come across. Seeing them roughed up and pushed around would be very refreshing and I hope that the initial attempts to free Ala Mhigo fail and that retaking it ends up being a more drawn out process than securing Baelsar's Wall.
Beatrix was never defeated by the party in FFIX. She thrashed the protagonist's party not once, not twice but three times. Better yet, she was a nuanced antagonist who ended up remaining loyal to her people and homeland without becoming an outright defector - which was a very refreshing element and a large part as to why I consider IX to be my favourite main title after XII. So here's hoping Lyse is beaten back at every turn and Fordola has a 'Beatrix' moment!
As for Zenos, he's definitely going to be someone that isn't particularly pleasant or reasonable. Given that there's people who fawn over Charibert and Grinnaux, though, I'm not entirely convinced he won't be without a fan following. Still, it's not a small number of people who desire Garlemald to be nuanced and given its own time to shine in the spotlight. At some point I have little doubt that we'll see peace between Garlemald and Eorzea. It's but a matter of when.
I just hope we get another character similar to Regula who ends up remaining loyal to his people and homeland but is willing to argue the benefit of forging some sort of beneficial alliance with the Warrior of Light and his allies. Putting aside the harsher stuff associated with Garlemald there is a lot of potential for prosperity and 'uplifting' through the use of magitek, which almost certainly can be useful outside of combat scenarios.
Well if the leader of Garlemald will stay the same I kinda doubt that we will see a true peace with them. At least right now Garlemald is used as the big threat next to the Ascians. They conquered big parts of Hydaelyn and I am just not sure who would be the next enemy if they would make peace with Eorzea. IMO I can only see that happening towards the end of this MMO and I am also not sure if this would still be the Garlemald some people like. (Maybe it will fall apart like Rome did)
Regula was also only fighting on our side for that one threat and if he had survived it I would not even be sure if he woulndt have been punished for that.
I get the impression that Zenos is deliberately going to refrain from getting support from the imperial capital simply for the sake of keeping things interesting.
Realistically, they probably have more then enough potential reinforcements to stop the rebellion dead in its tracks, but I think any retaliation from Garlemald itself is likely to occur in the aftermath of the 4.0 MSQ, and will be what spurs the two nations into declaring a full-on war against them, as it's likely their only hope of gaining a lasting peace.
I do have to agree on Garlemald taking things much more seriously starting at some point in the 4.x parts. By the end of 3.0 they have lost multiple Legatus, large chunks if not almost all of two legions as well as some hurt put on a third. By the end of Stormblood they will at the very least be put on the defensive in two seperate regions that prior had been safely under their control, as well as possibly lost yet another Legatus. It wouldn't surprise me if we start getting introduced to many more Legatus and the like via cuts to Garlemald in the 4.x patches.
I actually wonder, if we don't go to Garlemald in 5.0 how much might be us having to defend from a true Garlean push back into Eorzean and probably Doman territory. Might gives us a reason to try and get Tiamat out of her chains.
While I agree Garlemald should be more fleshed out (or as fleshed out as every other nation on Hydaelyn), that doesn't necessarily mean their philosophy and goals are morally vague. They can have a long, detailed history and goals and all that and still be capital E evil.
If I recall correctly during the same interview he pointed out how monstrous and unsympathetic Zenos would be, Yoshi-P also stated that people weren't supposed to like or sympathize with the Garleans, and that Zenos' monstrosity was in part a response to that. People will always find things to like about the villains, but they generally acknowledge when the villain(s) are meant to be evil, not try and force moral ambiguity into a place it doesn't fit so the villain(s) can be sympathetic. Go in with a clear mind and see what is, not what you want to see, is what I'm sayin'. (Note: I do not hang out on social media sites, so people liking Charibert and Grinnaux perplexes me. The former is an annoying pyromaniac and the latter is a bloodthirsty loose cannon, both so smug I just wanna punch them in their smug prick faces.)
I'm still convinced Fordola is going to be Lyse's rival; beyond that, I'm not keen on guessing what she's going to do. While he died a hero's death, van Hydrus was the legatus of an Imperial Legion. Only the gods know how many people were mistreated and how badly under his command and at his hands; it's up to individual discretion whether or not that one act of sacrifice is enough to atone for the things he did. (The story frames that it was.)
Peace will eventually be made with the Empire somehow. I also agree that Eorzeans should not be so stuck up about embracing magitek, but that is their decision to make.
It's widely acknowledged that if the Empire got serious about conquering Eorzea, we wouldn't stand a chance. The Alliance could barely hold off the tattered remnants of the VIIth Legion at the Battle of Cartenau; even with Ishgard's considerable military prowess added into the mix, there is no way Eorzea could stand up to the full might of the Garlean Empire.
From the look of the trailer it almost looks like Hien is hiding out with the Xaela tribe(or maybe some Fire Emblem Echoes is influencing me thoughts here XD). Still, he would be a wanted man, so he would need some very good cover to hide from the Garleans. He is not only the crown prince, he is a symbol for the country to rally behind, the Garlens will of course be on high alert to catch him.
I guess that even if the Azim Steppe has yet to be strongly affected by the imperial rule, the Xaela there might look at the big picture and realize it's likely just a matter of time before they become targets, as we know from the DRK and WHM quests that they definitely have been strongly oppressed in some places, and one of the tribes is mentioned as being alive in name only thanks to Garlean slavers.
The mention of them being ridiculed and humiliated in the WHM quests gives me the impression the Garleans are likely particularly racist towards them because of their appearance (Though it's hardly exclusive to their clan, as the Raen are mentioned as having had to prove their worth and overcome discrimination before they could comfortably live in the eastern reaches of Othard). I don't think we'll get a full scope of just how cruel the empire can be to its conquered peoples until we start moving into the more strongly occupied territories closer to Garlemald or the empire itself, though.
I'm also kind of curious as to whether or not we'll see any Au Ra conscripts amid the Garlean forces we deal with in Stormblood, since there were small amounts of the non-Hyur races among their ranks in ARR.
So that launch trailer.
