I've seen quite a lot of bait and it looks like everyone keeps biting hard. You have a post limit, wasting it on a helpless cause isn't worth it. Accept that you can't convince everyone and Tia isn't going to move. They're going to scream and text lingo respond until they can't anymore. Im not baiting at all I just say what I think there is a reason why its called "general discussion". Calling me aggressive etc. is the only thing wrong here tbh. No one really cares about post limit since you can just edit posts to add stuff.

Ironically, this was the original intended purpose for the /busy status. To tell your friends, "Sorry, although I'd usually be more than willing to help out or chat, etc., right now I don't have time, so don't bother me."

Unfortunately, after such a long time without any other relief from RMT spam (as it took years to even get right-click report added), /busy has for so long been used mainly for hiding from RMT spam, that now it's original meaning is largely ignored. If a friend or FC member sees you're set to /busy, they're not going to assume that means you're busy and don't want to be bothered right now. They'll just assume you got too fed up with RMT, and that since they're not RMT it wouldn't apply to them (because most of the time, that assumption would be right).

Yes it is about player search? How else could they know what zone I'm in to look? I clearly stated that all features and communication would be active but in proximity only. Not by search if incognito is enabled.

Maybe I'd rather prevent an attack before taking action to deal with it? Let me give you more examples because you seem to not know what prevention/protection is.

-You gets ads on your computer. Do you ignore them or report them? Or get an ad blocker?

-You see a bug in your home. Do you ignore them and wait to be infested, THEN call the exterminator? Or do you kill it, then protect yourself from future infestations?

-You've had a fire in your house. Do you wait until you're house is blazing to call 911 or get a fire detector or fire extinguisher to warn you? Do you not do things that can cause a fire?

-Mosquitoes bite you. Do you get bitten everytime then put on skin cream to treat the bite? Or wear repellent?

-You have a robbery because your door wasn't safe enough. Do you get robbed again then call 911? Or get BETTER security so you don't get robbed?

Reporting someone should be the last resort. The whole point of it is to not be a victim already then deal with it. Being a victim can simply mean being a victim of people(friends, FC members, etc) trying to talk to you too. When you want to be alone.

I used the word exaggerating because you compared the privacy settings of your psn account which contains your rl informations to ingame informations. A stalker can join linkshells (hunt ls etc.) which u are in to see the zone, he could make a alt to join your fc, a friend of the stalker shares a ls with u or saw u ingame. Just few examples how ppl can stalk even without using player search. Hell they can even ask in the areas if someone saw u. You shouldnt be forced into a status because of such people get rid of the complete problem and get them banned etc. This will prevent said stalker to stalk you or other players in future.

You have a stalker and don't want him/her to join? Tell the LS leader. Prevention.

A stalker makes an alt to try and get in the FC? Have controlled recruitment. Prevention.

As a matter of fact my FC already has controlled recruitment due other female members being messed with by guys(they were kicked). We have not gotten a creep since

Nobody claimed it would prevent everything. That's no reason not to prevent the part that it can.

Also its kinda strange that busy status is fine with you, but not wanting to have others talk to you is bad? I mean busy status is way more restrictive than the Incognito status would be, since this would only stops you from being found in the search function, thus people need to see your character to talk to you.

And you might see it as bad suggestions but I did not have a problem with any of the suggestion that followed the OPs post. Even the one where you are shown as offline. Really the only reason I could think that this is bad for a FC is, if you talk about something that you dont want everyone to hear but really those could be posted in LS or per tell. I just dont see any downside and its okay that you might dislike some of them, but calling people lazy or captain obvious is not really how you show your point.

So if RMT will always find a way to come back wouldnt that mean that SE should do nothing at all? I mean if in the end they will find a way again why even try to throw stones in their way? I am just not sure what they would do after that. I mean we can report them if they send us a tell, they would only be able to sent a invite to the people near them, so most of the time it would greatly help. For you this might not be a great argument but it seems that for others it is. And just because it might not be something permanent against the RMT, does not make it a bad solution.

There will never be a solution that will stop everything. Thieves will always find a way into a house if they truly want to go in there (and have the skill and knowledge), does this mean we should just all leave our doors open and have no security measures because there could still be a way to get in?

I knew that the person was not punished because they already had a ban before and yet they were on after that. And they also dont really stop with their behavior. I mean the one situation where that person stalked our FC was after I reported them..they are also still telling lies to my former FC about another person in the FC (was told about this by my former Co-leader). So either the punishment was not harsh enough for them to stop or they did not get a punishment. There might be rule that says that those might get a ban but how exactly would they know that the player stalked another one? Maybe they just simply were there? I am quite sure that its not that easy for SE and before they punish someone that might be innocent they will probably wait and/or do nothing.

In the end I just dont really see how the original suggestion was bad. (Which you already were against it) Maybe some of the following suggestions are a little too much, but I just dont really understand why you are arguing so much against it. You are a solo player so you probably would not even notice the change. Its nothing that leaves a bad impression on new players, since busy already exists and that is no problem (I never cared about that as a new player). Really the only point which might be a little to much is the offline status but still this was only one suggestion in this thread..

I dont want to hate on you and your opinion, since its in your right to have it, but after reading through the thread again I just cant really understand why you are so against it. Even if it does not improve much as long as it helps some people its already good.

So to be on topic:

I believe that its good for:
- at least get away from the new group invites from RMT if you are not near them
- stops the random tells from FCs if you are a new player or maybe if you are without a FC and dont want to join one
- gives you the possibility to not be followed by "stalkers" since they cant see where you are.

It does not stop people from sending you tells if you are near them so new people would still be able to ask questions, you would be able to get group invites from friends (which you cant if you are busy), you would still be able to be social in the game just with a little bit more peace.

So in the end all I can see is positive things. Maybe it wont stop the RMT for a long time, maybe you could try to report someone that stalks you but really why is it bad to want things to be easier?

Oh and another thing about /busy that is bad is that in a duty, it will block out a ready check and leave the rest of your team confused as to why you won't answer. Had this happen yesterday when someone had /busy on. No way to tell if they were ready.

My biggest problem with your main argument in this thread is that it is basically saying "You can't prevent everything so why bother?"

There is no such thing as perfection, but it doesn't stop people from striving for it. There will be no perfect protection against harassment or RMT, but when there is something you can do to mitigate it, and it is potentially quite feasible, there is no reason not to do it. Like you, I don't agree with all of the suggestions regarding an incognito mode brought up in this discussion, but clearly there is a difference in opinion as to worthwhile actions.

On your second point in the post I quoted, I definitely agree that people shouldn't be forced into a status to avoid harassment, and reporting it will ultimately be a better solution. However, an incognito mode that reduces the ability of harassers to reach you is still a useful tool as it creates more space between the offender(s) and the victim(s). Incognito can help victims avoid offenders while GMs handle the situation (which is sometimes necessary, I've heard of people harassing right up to the moment of ban before, sadly).

In regards to your aggressiveness, I would say that the tone your writing projects comes off as very dismissive of other opinions, which generates negative responses and is why you are being "aggressive" in that sense. It isn't as straightforward as aggression (which is generally quite clear).

Skype, Steam, various chat/messengers apps implemented that.

I don't see the point. If you want to be left alone, go to /busy and move along. You have LS, FC etc. to talk to those you want to while /busy.

We have a way of dealing with at least FC Spam: the blacklist. Someone stalking? Blacklist. Yea they can follow, but you won't see anything they type. Not perfect but we DO have the means to more or less accomplish the same thing.

But busy is way more restrictive than just simply being not found in player search. (Which is the original suggestion from the OP) A blacklist has a maximum amount of people you can put there so if people that want to play without a FC and have to black list even such players will have a full list quite fast. Its true that with blacklist you might not see anything a stalker writes but that does not change the fact that they can stand near you, follow you maybe even see who you are with and so on. And they can stand near you and shout out bad things about you, while you have no chance to see this. Not being on the search function will at least stop it partly since they wont be able to see where you are anymore thus making it way harder or even near impossible to stalk you. At the same time if you are busy and your FC wants to do some group content you are unable to join them. Not every group content is in an instance so if you want to join them you will have to take the busy status away again.

And lets not forget all the new RMT invites. Those would be gone too. Even just for this, a new status would be nice.

IMO it's just another icon next to your name, so nothing game changing and yet it can at least make the game more peaceful for some or even a lot of players. You would only need to activate it with on click and you are mostly free from spam while with blacklist you will have to go active again and again and thanks to the new RMT method you also have to go around and decline the invites too..it may not be much work but why not have some new little features that will make it much more peaceful and comfortable for such people thus giving them more joy in the game? I mean this is in a way only bad for those that send out those spam invites or are trying to find someone for some reasons..So in a way it has no true downside imo. So even if it improves the situation only a little bit or just make something more easier why not have it ingame?

My main argument wasnt "you cant prevent everything so why bother" this was just a reply to the rl examples OP stated. What I was against is to make a status which block all /tells outside of your friendslist which got suggested in some pages later or to make ppl appear offline/no fc log in notication/hiding players char. Also I already said I agree on some other suggestions but I can still be against some other stuff suggested. I mean if ppl talk to me like "oh boy"/call me troll or telling me I have no point because Im outnumbered ppl shouldnt even complain about my tone which isnt even negative tbh. Just to me its a bit exaggerating when people think they are hurt in their privacy because someone knows how their char look like and where they are in a GAME. Or acting like its impossible to just log in and do stuff and log out. The thing that players here act like you could avoid all problems (atleast in some posts) bothered me so I replied. This "stalking" ppl talk about is not very common and should be handled with blacklist + report to make those "stalkers" understand that they cant do it and to prevent it in the future for other players.

I think part of the problem is that you didn't specify at the outset that that was the part you were arguing against. You just argued, and people assumed it was the topic of the thread (which is the Player Search part) that you were arguing about. That's why some of your earlier arguments (like being unfriendly to newcomers) didn't make sense. To people thinking in terms of the original suggestion, it wouldn't have much impact on newcomers, but a "no /tells outside of your friendslist" suggestion could.

So let's break it down:

The main suggestion of this thread: An Incognito mode that prevents your name and info from showing up in Player Search. How do you feel about this one?

Personally, I think it would be quite beneficial at times, for all the reasons the OP listed.

Having that Incognito mode also make you appear offline in Friend/FC/LS lists and block FC login notifications. How do you feel about this one?

My own view on it: It has a more limited applicability than the Player Search part, because hopefully neither RMT spammers nor stalkers are in any of those groups, and people sending out blind invites are unlikely to do so from there either. But it does still have one nice effect for people who want a little privacy from their friends to play on their own for a while. Although it's only got the one purpose rather than several, that one is perhaps the most widespread. Lots of people want to be in highly social groups, yet still be able to have some quiet time to themselves now and then when they don't feel like making themselves available to those groups.

That's common enough that most implementations I'm familiar with combine the two, making their incognito or anonymous mode hide you from both friends and strangers alike. But if it was two selections, one for whether you want to be Incognito and not appear on Player Search, and another for whether or not to extend that to Friend/FC/LS Lists as well, that would be even better.

It's possible I'm wrong, since tone can be difficult to determine from text in a forum, but I'm pretty sure this part was just a joke suggestion, made from taking the incognito idea to an extreme.

Restrict /tell to Friends only

This used to be suggested a lot back before the right-click report feature pretty well got rid of RMT /tell spam. I was always against it, because it blocks too much useful chat between strangers and further segregates people into cliques (which is already a bit of an issue sometimes for new players and I'd rather not exacerbate it). Back when this was a popular suggestion, I usually conceded that it could be considered as a last resort if nothing else could get rid of the RMT /tell spam. (It's still better than using /busy for it after all.) But now that the /tell spam issue has been handled fairly well, I think we can quit considering such intrusive remedies for it.

The odd part here in this thread, is that although you've argued against it, I'm not sure who you're trying to convince, because I don't recall seeing anyone really arguing for it here. (Some might approve of such a feature, but it would be a bit off-topic in a thread that doesn't really pertain to chat directly.)

You haven't really provided any good reasons this shouldn't be a thing other than "Omg people are so lazy they can't use the options already available to them." The current options are lacking. I think I will stop replying to some too. Questions are ignored anyway and saying that they were only against some suggestions while at the same time they were already arguing against the idea from page 1 (other suggestions only started later) really shows me that this is truly just about arguing for the sense of it. No need to post long answers anymore if they are ignored anyway and too much arguing would maybe get the thread closed or something which is not good. So going to answers those that are giving some arguments.

Stalker: Sadly for me this is not only in theory. Yes they do this to piss you off and at least blacklisting them would stop the messages. But the problem is that they can still find you. My problem is that I did report the person to the GM and yet he is still there and he is still doing it. Its not something that happens daily but over months. Suddenly standing in the FC house while you are the only one in there crafting and staring at you without doing anything else, having an event with another FC (which he shouldnt know) and yet towards the end is suddenly there. There are many more examples. The problem is, how would SE know if this is already stalking or if its just random. I mean he could argue that he missed the old FC thus visiting the house and I was just there. Maybe he could even say that he just likes to go into different houses to look at the decoration and thus finding us in the house of the other FC. I am quite sure that they need 100% evidence before they are punishing someone and as long as he does not write it down somewhere ingame it gets really hard to have enough evidence. (I mean he is a paying player so I am quite sure that SE wont punish someone so easily) I mean yes some are just doing it too obvious and are stalking hours or even days but he for example is not stupid and it happens over months. Yet its still quite negative for me since you kinda get a little nervous and if he is there again one will remember all the the stress and anger that you had thanks to that person. So blacklisting someone only solves the problem of speech but the Incognito status would at least solve the problem of being found. Yes a stalker could still come just over to the FC house but it would be way to obvious for a stalker to always be there so if you are somewhere in the world you are quite save from such visits. So long story short, after having that person still ingame even after reporting them, I kinda lost the believe in the GM for those situations and it would be nice to help it a little on my own. The suggested status would greatly help there imo.

Busy: Yes you could slap it off for a short time but it would still not help if you dont want to be found per player search while still restricting you quite a lot. Not every single friend is in a LS so sometimes you might just chat with them per tell. If they are on your friend list you could still send tells even with the Incognito status, while you cant do the same thing with busy. And lets not forget that any ready check will not get through.

RMT bots: How would they find us if they dont use the player search? I mean I am standing in my own small house, before that I was on the run far way from Limsa or any of the cities so no Bot could have seen me there and get my name, yet I suddenly got a group invite. The only way they could do that is by player search. Theoretically if they only spam those that they see and not per player search I should have gotten countless tells when I am in a city next to a bot that spams his message. Yet most of my tells are outside of cities or while I am not near any bot at all. So yes I do believe that the only way that they get our names is through player search. There is probably a program that runs through it automatically and just stops randomly and send the tell out to the one where it stops. Having the status would at least stop them from doing that.

And lets just say that instead of it being a icon like busy they could just make it a option in the main settings where you can just click it on. You could still use busy at the same time if you feel like not wanting any tell but otherwise you would be free of a icon and yet none could find you in the search. (IMO I find the busy symbol next to the name really ugly and if you are in party finder or something you would lose the Incognito status since you can only have one icon active at a time so having it in the settings would be nice)

FC Spam: Well my rl friend joined my former FC and now my duo FC because he wanted to get away from all those invites and I remember that I got a lot of those randomly too when I was a sprout. I was even getting them while being outside of a city far away from a player (saw nobody). So maybe a lot of FC just sent it to you when they see you in the cities but I am quite sure that at least those that I experiened used the player search. Yet even if its just a small number of invites with that method it would still stop it. So win win for everyone. (Other than those that sent it through it.)

The problem with the new report system is that you can only truly click report them if they write you. So the new method with the party invites does not fall under it. I have put more RMT on the blacklist the last few weeks thanks to that than by getting a tell in the same time frame and yet no person on my blacklist got deleted till today so I cant truly just kick someone from it.

So yeah the newest problem with the group invites from RMT which gets quite annoying and that stalkers can still found your place are not avoidable with current tools. So it has no true downside and it might help against those. I just cant see much reason for it being not implemented. But still I thank you for trying to explain your reasons. :)

Aw thanks. :) I am not a native English speaker so I always fear that my posts dont make sense. Nice to read that they are in some way. I would love to give you more likes for your idea since its really a very good suggestion imo because it does not negative impact the game and it helps people.

Not sure if this was suggested, but how about an extended version of incognito that allows you to silently logon without any notification even within your FC? It also disables the chat window except for NPC interactions until cancelled.

This was suggested by a friend who occasionally wants to play, but doesn't want to handle the burden of all the chats and invites that can happen. they literally want to logon and play without interruption, and without hurting anyone's feelings by obviously ignoring communication.

\busy is not the answer. Not only does it block normal conversation but if you forget to turn it off before entering a raid things that depend upon the social interfaces like Ready Check don't work. It would be better to allow some granularity on invites and a way to mark yourself not searchable. Having these would still allow you to use the main social aspects of the game without being interrupted by functions that obscure your field of view and require an overt action to end.

It was suggested. Sometime earlier in the thread. I'm not opposed to the option although it's something I probably wouldn't use it myself. I know of some who would benefit off of this.
