First time I just did a Protect My Internet Connection. That seemed to work, but would time out (after 3 hours cyberghost kicks you when your using it for free). So then I subbed up, then did Choose my VPN Server. Picked the one with least amount of load on it, ran it over night and it downloaded for me. Still was really slow.
Not sure but, maybe just running it over and over with the free version I may have eventually got it to go.
Hopefully you can get something to work for you, Good Luck.
So i have great news if you are using the ffxiv client. Instead go to steam download the free trial and it will install 8 gb and then you will get the launcher. Sign in and bam done. So the TL DR use steam and get the trial version to download the game. Then if you want move the files somewhere else or whatever. I hope this works for others.
That's all good and dandy friend but what do the poor PS4 players do?
Support finally got back to me regarding my issue ( i was in extreme detail, i tried different settings like google dns, tried wireless, even port forwarded, etc..))
and got a copy and paste answer
Dear Customer,
Regarding your request for support. Please find your answer below.
If you are unable to perform a version update successfully after activating the game client, there is a possibility that there is not enough free space or there is a transmission issue.
Please try these steps to see if they resolve the issue.
1)Check free space on the hard disk
2)Perform a connectivity test on your PlayStation®4
Test to see whether your PlayStation®4 is properly connected to the network.
From the home menu, select "Settings" > "Network Settings" > "Internet Connectivity Test" to perform the test.
3)Perform a system update on your PlayStation®4
Perform the most recent system update and then try a version update for "FFXIV: ARR"
The update can be performed from the home menu by selecting [Settings] > [System Update] > [Update via Internet]
4)Restart communication equipment
Turn off the power of your communication equipment for 30 minutes to an hour.
Unnecessary data accumulated on the equipment will be initialized, possibly allowing for smoother transmission.
5)Update firmware of communication equipment
Update your "firmware," the program running your communication equipment.
If firmware is outdated, your communication equipment may not function properly, so please update your firmware before trying the version update again.
*Consult with the help manual when updating firmware. Also, even if your firmware is up to date, rewriting it may improve the situation.
6)Check security services of your internet provider
Depending on your internet provider or service plan, there may be security services included.
Please confirm that these security services permit online gaming.
7)Remove routers
In order to diagnose the issue, remove routers and hubs temporarily.
*This may change your connection to a broadband connection. Please consult with your provider for connection settings.
8)Check router settings
Check the settings of security functions (such as SPI) for your router.
Also, use a port that can be used for the game.
*For details, please consult with the manufacturer of your router.

Thank you for contacting the SQUARE ENIX Support Center.
Sooo as guessed support is absolutely useless as this helps nothing and they do not admit that it could possibly be their launcher, and also i mentionned that i lost a month or so worth of sub, no sympathy i guess from them either
I will miss Eorzia and my friends but i do think i am done, complete non acceptable bs
Wow cant believe this is still ongoing.
I had this problem for a few weeks on the PS4 and pretty much gave up, always gave "unable to download patch files" error....... tried pretty much everything and gave up.....incredibly frustrating.. HOWEVER the other night September 6th when the Playstation Network was offline for a few hours I thought I would give it another try, Patch updated perfectly when my console was not connected to PSN. I obviously cant test to see if this solved it as the game updated but maybe some of you should try disconnecting from PSN and see what happens, hopefully it helps, if not then square needs to fix as its not anyones router, or ISP or whatever stuff they say...Have PC on same ISP, router etc and that updated completely fine....this on squares or sonys end.
That seems rather odd as i though you had to have PSN in order to play, only exception would be if you were already playing FF when PSN goes down.
Glad it worked for you, i will not say 100% it's at SE end as my issue first happened when PSN had also went down, however the issue would have fixed itself therefore i still think it's the game launcher.
Alas we fall on death ears, this is a issue that first begin for others 4 months ago or longer and has never even been looked into.
But hey let us look into dying items rather then allowing players to play once more, clearly more important
I am sorry i normally am not bitchy like this but having lost a sub and a half and getting Zero help at all frustrates the hell out of me
True about needing PSN to play (sort of), PSN only required to fire up the launcher for authentication and once thats done you can disconnect from PSN and play all you want, in my situation I already had the launcher running in rest mode prior to PSN going down so at that point I already had authentication, started system with launcher already running ,downloaded patch ,logged in and played while the PSN was offline.
Perhaps try booting up launcher with PSN ON , once launcher loads disconnect from PSN , login then try and download patch.
Just trying to give a suggestion as I know how frustrating it is
Try out this solution I found today http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...ew-solution%21
Thank you Nao, i am not sure i understood your method, lol but looked promising.
Because it was longer then 14 days i was out of the game i was locked out of the forum... I was pissed to say the least.
Anyhow finally was able to patch the download probably just by luck.
I am dreading the re-install though when i get PS4 Pro in November
Sorry, I tried to make it as simple as I could, all you are doing is closing the game shortly before the failure so you don't eat up mobile data, downloading just past the update and switching back to your normal internet. I repeated this 5 times and only once did I get the error over tether and wasn't able to patch, but I think it was because I killed it too late, 1049 MB was my actual point of failure and I killed it at 1040, I had been killing it at 940MB and downloading past the 1040MB mark, into about 1100 MB, then switching back. Out of 5 attempts I was able to get past the each time using a tether, and varified that it would fail over LAN first. I hope by the time the Pro is out, this is resolved, this is all Square's bandwidth provider issue, they are going to have to be the one's to deal with it.
Where it actually fails is going to be different for everyone, because the jumps that are failing in connection will be at a different point in the patch based on your location or who your ISP actually jumps to, these patches are strangly not coming from one source, that's why you see the connection completely drop and the reconnects to download another part, for me, it's a server located in california and it was to jump through Minnesota and Washington, where the others hit Texas and it patch fine there. In contrast my phone makes 2 different jumps, one to Missouri and then Navada, finally to California (Source). But that's all irrelevant unless you were literally my neighbor with the same ISP.
Thank you very much for the clarification, i really do think i just finally got lucky as i had lost a month and tried well over 60 times to download, and it does not seem like big enough of an issue for them to look into i guess...
Loosing subs is nothing i guess, lol
