I guess no one has done the Conjurer quests, or at least read the dialogue.
An Ishgardian knight gets knocked out by a fireball, saying there was a dragon chasing him, but when you go back to the cave he fled from there's just a dragon-ish looking stone, and something says:
???: More...Time... Await me, master. We shall return to Ishgard...together.
The dragon looking stone flashes a bit with that line.

I think I'd prefer to not have a dragon as a Dragoon, either - yeah I know they sound the same, but the origin of the word hasn't much at all to do with fire-breathing lizards anyway. I don't know it just feels a bit iffy to get forced to rely on a pet of some sort when I came to the class for the big pointy sticks.

I have to agree/Disagree Yes I want the Wyvern back, dragoons are dragon tamers they should have a wyvern, but I want to see them integrate it in a new way. They mentioned alternate mounts, that could be intresting.
Maybe have it travel around with you but instead of fighting with you like in XI they make all Dragoon actions like team attacks. examples, jump: Jump on your wyverns back and fly into the air before dive bombing the ground. Flame strike: Wyvern breaths fire on your weapon as you thrust it at your enemy. Sweeping strike: Jump on your wyverns back and sweep over your opponents with fire and spear damaging a row of enemies. or even split up the attacks and have some actions give your wyvern orders and you can then use an action at the same time that your wyvern does but it is all under your control as opposed to support based on your actions.
And if they ever make an airship PVP wyverns need to be flyable.
There is one thing I think they need to keep the same from XI... shared emotes with your wyvern, They made dancing so much better. -

I've said this to my sister and to several others that if Dragoon doesn't get a Wyvern with the job then all it will be is a Lancer with a fancy title/gear and a few new abilities. A Dragoon without a pet could still be very unique. Have we considered the possibility of the Dragoon themselves performing elemental breath attacks?
Lance, Jump, Breaths. All performed by the player with no pet needed.
(In this instance, I wouldn't want the Dragoon to have Healing Breath. I don't need no goon spitting all over me for a few hundred HP.) -

The point behind dragoon is it's natural advantage against dragon type monsters, not the pet wyvern itself. If you really consider dragoon's original conception of being a class that specifically slays dragons, having a dragon for a pet doesn't make sense at all.

I understand that a pet wyvern had never been done before and was actually pretty useful in FFXI, but for the sake of keeping Beastmaster and Summoner unique in this game, I do not think it should be implemented. Who knows what will happen after Dragoons get pets. Puppetmaster all over again? X_X -

It's not the fact that the wyvern was needed. It was just a fun concept. To own your own little dragon and helped when soloing (like when running from something you cant handle and letting the wyvern take the fall). It was just more defining ith classes in ffxi and I think that is what dragoons need is some more diveresity especially since we have a lancer class already. Now if they had a different theme for dragoon like a darker feel or even with dragon abilities then I can see ditching the pet.
You know maplestory kinda had a cool concept for having a dragon pet. It grew with your level and eventualy became your mount. Now that would be defining.
Also no need to worry about ishgard lore because all will be dead in 2.0 (for the most part) plus they are talking about a dragon like race in the distant future. -

Yeah, I've seen quite a few Dragoons from Ishgard in quest instances. None of them had pet dragons. I don't think they get along too well, considering they're pretty much lusting to kill a dragon at any given moment.

I would be in the boat for being disappointed in not seeing Dragoon getting the pet Dragon in some form or fashion! I loved the job quest in XI because of this. Granted the little dragon really didn't add much in the way of abilities though. Although there was dragon specific pet commands :D like Summoner had for it's avatars and summons.
I would be fine with Dragoon not getting Dragon till about 25-30. Then Dragoon would have to go on a quest of "Enlightenment". To train or earn the trust of a dragon! I'm not asking for dragon raising though lol.
Just a nice little side quest to gain the ability of having a dragon pet abilities! Like flame, bite, tail whip... etc.
But lets mix things up a bit more and a Dragoon can specialize in different type of dragons! Elemental ones if you will. Blue are water, light blue Ice, Green Aero, puple Lightning (my favorite!) etc....
Then it would be a matter of collecting them all! And instead of the dragon always being by your side "Everywhere" you go! Just call upon it in battle! Maybe it would exist as long as you had TP, then fly away once TP was depleted. Then once you build up more you could call on the dragon again, but maybe use a different elemental one.
Just throwing ideas out here. But really I would like to see dragons in this game. Yoshi talked about a Dragon race and I almost fell out of my chair watching the Producer Live video lol. -

All right everyone great discussion so far, it really seems like a lot of people are passionate about their own version of Dragoon. What I've learned from this is not to be scared because there is more than one way to make Dragoon very cool.
Wyvern pet = awesome, Dragon magic/breaths casted from the Dragoon himself = just as cool.
Alright so looks like we could have a very interesting class on our hands, but we should get an answer to this during the NEXT producers letter. I'm going to need help though from supports of this thread. Everyone who can and is willing please twitter the question related to this thread for the 2nd producers live letter please do so, so that we can hopefully get an answer from Yoshi regarding Dragoons. I would love if I could get my wyvern back but I can surely live without it. I just hope Dragoon is more advanced as shown when FF games kept being made and the job re-introduced. As long as i'm not just a lancer that can jump i'm good without.
The Kain style of look is a much better improvement compared to XI so I hope that never changes. -

Well, to be honest. FF XI was my first Final Fantasy and all, and when I found out a job had a pet dragon (wyvern) that fought along side you, I thought that was awesome. When I found out about Beastmaster and Summoner and Puppetmaster, I got excited again and again.
I think people like us just enjoy playing as something that allows a pet, or some sort of cool creature to fight along side of you. Beforehand, I had no love or knowledge of a Dragoon/Lancer, but after playing as one in XI only for the wyvern at first, I learned and appreciated to love a class that uses a polearm from then on.
But it wasn't until FF XIV when this came to be, since I was disappointed by the lack of a wyvern, or Jump for that matter, being attached to that class this time around. But after getting it to 50 first I loved it and did it to honor the job I played in XI.
What I'm trying to get at from all the gibberish I just typed is that, after hearing about our chocobos, and other pets we can tame/charm in the future, being able to fight alongside us in the future, having the wyvern didn't really matter anymore. Because Dragoons and other various classes might be able to have many things to choose from, which is awesome in its own right. So, I'm pleased with how Lancer/Dragoon are now and how they will be presented in the near future. -

Well, the Ishgard storyline doesn't really allow for a pet wyvern haha. I'd be cool with the DRG job (not class, remember the difference in terminology!) getting breath attacks that it harnessed by beating a certain dragon in a quest, like kill flame dragon for DRG job-specific quest and learn flame breath. I'd also be cool with it not getting them at all and just be a jumping class that may have an affinity at killing dragon-type monsters more easily.
But who know's, they can do whatever they feel like. Kain learned white magic in "the After Years" afterall. FF5 had them jump and drain/aspir. FF9 had it be very support oriented with AoE Regen and MP healing while also getting a gambling move to either really help your HP/MP or reduce it to 1 lol. In Tactics they got Reraise. In tactic's advance/A2 they got the breath abilities. FF11 they got a pet wyvern.
tl;dr anythings possible. The 2 things they all seemed to have was Jump (sometimes multiple types) and Lancet (HP/MP steal). -
