and ended killing every crab we could see ^^

i have sooooooo much memory, with ff11, and today for sure this game have a special room in my heart (weird too say something like this about a game ...) but im proud of it !!
now the sad part, do am i gonna remember FF14 the same way ? i doubt it really ...

I cried as well, the moment the girl started repeating the openning words to ff11. My only disappointment with the quest line has be that we didn't get the iconic artifact armors from 11. While the npc's armor is nice looking...it just doesn't have the same meaning for me that donning my old Dragoon af would have.

In Iroha's time, the 'hero' (player character) actually is her 'Master' that she keeps referring to, hence why the player character in Eorzea is similarly reflected upon during the last cutscene.
From the last cutscene, Vana'diel's creator, known as the Dawn Goddess Altana, apparently willed Iroha to stay in Eorzea for one reason or another (Iroha believing that she would need Eorzea's Warrior of Light to further train and teach her).
In retrospect, this event would have no effect on FFXI's actual ending which can be found on Youtube, but it can be implied that she vanished just before she met the player character in Norg, a town hidden in Yuhtunga Jungle. This is probably why the first thing she asks the journalist in Costa del Sol if Selbina or Mhaura (port towns) are nearby.
Similar to the XIII event in which Lightning is given a test by a certain god (not known if it was either Bhunivelze or Etro, though it's most likely the latter due to the nature of the event), this is fan service mostly to the players that have played XI, and, therefore, has no real bearing on the source's story. However, given the fact that Iroha is staying in Eorzea for yet a while longer, she may influence other parts of XIV's story, whether side-story or main. She's also effectively prolonging XI's relevance beyond its final scenario. -

Very nice summary! A few corrections, though: the emptiness is not darkness, per say. It's the void in Promathia's heart, which is slowly engulfing the world.
The Treasures of aht Urghan is from the near east. The far East was never accessible in the game's lifespan.
Altana didn't single-handedly create Vana'diel. She was one of two creators. the light goddess Altana and the dark god Promathia both worked to create the world. in fact, everything we thought we knew about the world was a lie fabricated by the Church in San d'Oria. -

I'm actually back to playing FFXI. With the free weeks and my lack of motivation to do anything in XIV, I gave it another shot with a bunch of FC mates. Been having a lot of fun partying in the dunes (decided to level a NIN, though might do SAM) and it's a nostalgia trip all around. Haven't been this excited to play an MMO in a while (probably HW release).

There are 2 Currency tabs that list around 100+ currencies in total. That is how much content that has been released.
Most of them, nowadays, are specfically used for getting gear on the pretense of glamour purposes, but a lot of it was released with a horizontal mind-set; meaning, as opposed to the vertical gear climb we see in XIV, XI gave many options at LV 75.
However, now, it's gone to a vertical shift. But, it only climbs to around item level 119. So it's not as bad as it seems.
The game is also being sold for $10 in whole (main game, expansions and add-ons) as part of the Goddess' Gala promotion/website event for a limited time. Basically, it's being handed out as something to try.
I, for one, have been playing again and the game is really welcoming to newcomers now. You can enlist in the aid of Trust minions that act as placeholders for party members to help with most content if you don't have others to play with. The AI has been specifically revamped since I last used them and they can even move around the battlefield given their specific role in battle.

I wanted to love this event. I thought it was going to be an actual... I don't know. Event. I'm really tired of the fate events they have. XI had such elaborate events, I really wished they would have taken an XI point of view to do the event this year. One thing I would have loved, if they did it fate wide, was fates that had XI bosses, like Shadow Lord. Or like... Promathia. Then I would have been fine with events, but they didn't even make new mobs or anything. So disappointed.
That being said, despite the completely disappointing event. The last cutscene hit hard. It made up for the horrible event they made, but I really was looking forward to this.
Heaven Eleven was a nice touch. -

Was a nice event, although it just increased my distaste and resentment for XIV.
XI had depth and story, adventure and danger.
XIV only looks pretty, its hollow feeling and the empty world just annoys me.
