One should ask themselves what ultimately didn't interest them. For all it does so very right FFXIV is simply a polished and refined version of current mmo's, a lot of little things came together to make this game as popular as it is and continuing to be... Among that is the design of attractive, viable races that people actually want to play as. I have said it once and i'll say a million more times the developers simply have to look at what is currently the most picked options, what we pick has impact on the game and we as a majority chose this.
one of the few rare case of bestial race popular in mmorpg, is the worgen, but two reason at this:
- 1) they can be human when not in fight!
- 2) werewolf stay one of the favorite monster race know.
let's be honest most of the time the bestial race are underplayed... or are played, because people don't have the choice. let's take the race from World of Warcraft...
before they did had added the blood elf, most player was playing undead and orc... but when the blood elf did come out, a tons of player did change of race. why that? because most player prefer play cute race than bestial race. a lot of them can't immerse themself if them avatar is too far from themself. that why most of the time, race Humanoid (and not human) are the one used.
you can argue all days, bestial race are often (actually most of the time) the less played. add a new race that will be played by only a small part of the community is a loss... and i did explain already that add this sort of race, will ask a lot of ressource and investement, they can't decide this sort of thing, without be sure it will appeal the player. because add a race serve to appeal to more player... not to a minority. it's a huge argument for sell an expansion into a mmorpg.
I don't think you're understanding me.
A Ronso IS a Ronso, and a Ronso cannot exist in XIV because it is a Ronso. Every race added to the game must have, at a minimum, a unique name.
Why are female Roegadyn "imported" Ronso the same way Miqo'te are "imported" Mithra?
Let's really look at their faces.
http://i.imgur.com/gfsqy6C.jpg
http://sereneaurora.com/ffxiv/roeg2.png
Notice how the brow and the bridge of the nose create a sort of illusion of a "catlike" nose.
Now, let's look at the female Ronso models.
http://www.electricblueskies.com/wp/...NSO-PEOPLE.jpg
Now, strip out the following:
Cat features such as eyes and tail. These are redundant with the Miqo'te, so they are unnecessary. Remember, femRoe were created AFTER Miqo'te.
Body hair. They would be too much like a beast tribe, combined with not wanting to render total body hair for player characters
Hands and feet. They simply don't work with the armor models.
The similarities are there, and thus I postulate that the Roegadyn are the adapted form of the Ronso and Galka as they exist in XIV, just as the Au Ra are the adapted Gria, the hyur the adopted humans and humes, and the Miqo'te the adopted Mithra.
And yes, the CURRENT beast tribes...but the law is simple.
Are you humanoid? If yes, you can enter. If no, DIE SCUM/GET OUT!
If you look like a Beast Tribe, you will be treated like a Beast Tribe.
Now this makes so much more sense the Au Ra would have benefited from this so very much, Particularly due to the Raen and the Xaela being so different in temperament as cited in their lore. A new race that incorporates a physical change from one clan to the other based on physical proportions, with the additions of a few small things ( claws, eye shape, ear style, ect ). Imagine what the Miqo'te race would have looked like if one of the tribes looked like Ronso instead of sun kitty, moon kitty.
*Cough* Goblins, Qirqins, and the occasional Mamool'ja would like to speak with you. The three cities LOVE them unless they're actually doing illegal things. The problem is of the three, two of those are extremely gullible and greedy, leading them to get involved in smuggling. Heck, only reason we go into Brayflox's Longstop is because the Goblins are under attack there.
@ The beast races are least popular argument, even from an EQ2 perspective it is true that they are usually the least played, either due to limited customization or just plain turning people off. Vah Shir/Kerra, Iksar, and Ratonga are some of the least played races. Froglok, Troll, and Ogre lucked out a little. A little.
The Ul'Dah culture is the real sticking point here though. As I've mentioned, they closed off the city to ALL beastmen. There's even inklings that this might be a ploy by the monetarists to monopolize their goods (since they control caravans and the like).
But if that changes is irrelevant, because when you make a new character you're on a carriage to Ul'Dah and get stopped by Brass Blades, and you're introduced to the city as "once allowing beastmen, but now they've been expelled from the city"
And if you go into the city, you never see any beastmen (Moogles don't count because of the whole invisibility thing). How Gridania feels about the Sylphs and how Limsa feels about the Qiqirn, Mamool-Ja, and Goblins is irrelevant so long as Ul'Dah hates their guts for the purposes of making them playable.
If your character was a beastman, they would gut you like a trout rather than try to get a bribe from the peddler.
And yeah EQ2's froglok situation is mostly because they introduced a rather convoluted series of quests and raids to unlock them. They were kind of a prestige thing. Plus they're frogs. Ogres are kind of the Roe of the EQ universe, so they get some love.
While you have a point, it's not entirely enveloping. I'll use myself as an example. I'm a Miqo'te. I'll never not be a Mioq'te. I love my character and couldn't see myself any other way.
However I am just as excited as others for the Au Ra. It adds variety and spice to the world. It gives me something new to look at and interact with. Having a small emote conversation with a new race will be cute as using the emotes myself. Checking out someones new glamour as an Au Ra can give off different impressions compared to if they were an Elezen. Arguing lore points and bringing race into the conversation always makes for a fun time, and the more races the merrier.
I, the onlooker, would love to onlook some more races, even if I won't play them myself. There probably wouldn't be a lot of bestial players if they do make a beast race, but of those I observe, would be a pleasure to me.
Not going to happen. I want this too...because more diversity.
If it ain't super kawaii uguu desu, it's not coming here.
Just see for yourself in-game, every one and they grandmum's are friggin' cats.
Ya typical nekuu nekooo waaahh!!!
>__>;
Any other race that's not that tier, will only be waste of resources.
IIRC, recent interview showed that Yoshida DIDN'T make femra's succubus looking, but someone who you wanna protect.
I love the female Au Ra design, but the concept art was waaaay better.
It fit demons/succubus on them...these do not, and throwing the "Notta dragon! Demon motif"
just makes those scales look worse because they fit more dragon...I mean they didn't even give us fangs or tiny wings or anything
to scream demon.
Yah. And miqote jus look like tiny humans with cat features. plz moor orginality like somethin out of mass effect sci fi creaturz plz!11
Hardly one to talk, Miss Lalafell :P
Demon motif motif for the Dragon_race is a little silly no? The Au Ra are meant to be ambigious currently. Dragons and demons (Not succubi, but they're weird ones) look pretty similar, heck the end boss of AK HM is apparently a dragon and I could've sworn it was voidsent til I looked it up.
I just wish the Au Ra at least looked different between the Xaela and Raen, maybe even suit both crowds with that.
They do look like humans with cat features. People don't want the next race to be human with some animal features, or at least not "Midlander + other species traits", so they're asking "Hey SE, next race make 'em look more animal like". Like, not even like "I want kobolds to be playable!" Just something with more a more distinct animalistic face would work fine, Mithra compared to Miqo'te in this case.
No, the problem is that races that don't look human can't be done.
All the player models are based on the human biped. Anything that is not essentially a human biped can not be a player character. If you want a playable race with more than two legs (eg a centaur), no legs (eg a Mermaid or Lamia) or ?!? (eg Manticore) that would create so much work for the developers as every race requires an entirely new gear set from the existing gear, or making race-exclusive gear. As every developer will say, they don't like making "race-exclusive" gear because then they have to make race-exclusive gear for every race otherwise players complain.
SEE THIS Monstergirl encyclopedia (caution cartoon nudity)
Archeage has another example of where the concept art was better than what actually wound up in the game, because I don't know, maybe the western players wanted something furrier, but it wound up not being cute at all.
If you want Japanese players to play it, it has to be cute. If you want Korean players to play it, it has to be sexy, and if you want Western players to play it, it has to be ugly.
And if you thought the ear socks and tail clipping were a problem now...!
I would have liked to see this race be entirely reptilian or something more along the lines of lizard people rather than humans with horns and a tail. Regardless, none of this matters to me as Lalafell are and always will be the supreme race superior to all.
Then SE shouldn't make a new race at all from now on. They've succeeded in making a popular race (Miqo'te) so they no longer need to try any more. Leave new races to the beastmen and let us just deal with the fact this game has nothing unique to play as.
Unless you're a Miqo'te or Lalafell, you can already 'dress up' as a Viera. Just choose a hairstyle that hides your human ears and then equip the bunny ears. Voila, you are now a Viera (SE would never create Ivalice Viera, as they have unique feet).
I sense you are quite extreme.
Hyur is humans with human characteristics.
Elezen: tall humans with pointy ears.
Miqo'te: humans with purrfect kitty-cat features.
Lalafell: Tyrion Lannister.
Roegadyn: Big humans with muscles.
And now It'll be split between Miqo'te lalafel and au'ra. ;P
They've already drawn some rather awesome concept art of ff14 Viera though unique feet and all. Whether they actually implement it with w/e expac comes after HW or not who knows. But never is a strong word given what we've seen/heard thus far.

As stated before, it by no means guarantees they will be placed in Erozea, just interesting to see how much work has already been put in to them. Also of note, funny how this is what the design team comes up with even if it's only for the year of the ram.

I would like a bird race. Any protruding feathers could be suppressed beneath head gear, and the 'beak' could be small enough to not need gear tweaking. Or... no beak, just a human face with feathers on the head/neck/arms/feet. But, hardware limitations and... well... SE has kind of dug themselves in a hole with their decision to create so many human-like races (even if they are this way due to hardware and production issues). If they release ONE very beastly race now, it will be the odd one out... and that will be just odd. For people mentioning WoW and other games' many races... there are plenty of beastly races from the start. We have an assortment of human-like races, so the standard has been set.
idk I liked my Ferran.

But yeah there was a lot of hair clipping issues there.
This is just where you prove you can't make everyone happy. The absolutely gigantic "show your Au Ra" thread shows that several people do think the Au Ra as they currently are, are unique and different from other races enough to warrant a change or an alt. Or at least hours spent in the benchmark just to play with them.
The Au Ra gave us an interesting...hybrid. For the females you got the cute and energetic bits of Mid. Hyurs and Miqo'te, but the elegance of Elezen. The males got sort of the boy-ish charm Mid. Hyurs have, and a mix of Elezen and Roeg body build. The fact that they seem to take cues from just about every other race might be part of the reason why some people don't see them as distinct. Which is a legit opinion.
I have no idea what direction they would go for the next race. It probably should be more "fierce" along the lines of Highlanders and Roegs. It's not hard to make "fierce" look "pretty" or "cute" or "handsome".
I know this post is from yesterday, but I got placed in posting jail (hit post limit) before I could reply to this.
I didn't know that...I wish they did the same thing too, I wonder why they didn't.
If you want to see all of that post I quoted click on the box that looks like a fast forward button. [>>] <---- something like that
I wish I could find it. It was old and perhaps even on the ARR beta forums before the great Forum Purge. But a vote way back then tilted things this way with the cute-ish human-ish looks for the races. Mind you I can't find it. Heck so long ago I could even be remember it wrong. But if you don't get a fierce looking race you might want to look to the 1.0 peeps who gave yoshi the hint of what 'players' want. XD (man that was so long ago...)
The only issue I see with that is the currently dilemma with Au Ra and their origins. If they're dragonic in nature, then they'd never be allowed near Ishgard. If they're demonic, then they'd never be let near Gridania, as has plenty of reason to not like voidsent, primarily the Elementals knowing the dangers of voidsent.
Perhaps after some events occur in Ul'dah in relationship to those in power, then they'd allow some beastmen in. Alternatively maybe some weird retcon-ish rules, like "You're the exception, but we'll kick you out at any moment if we feel the need to". (Think Yuguri wanting to keep her mask on as to not make Eorzea unsettled while the PC in question is an Au Ra themselves)

Could this be what you mean?
I'm fine with the female Au'ra but the male, no. It just looks like copy of Elezen, same body proportion without muscle slider.
A question to those who think a new race should be popular enough to justify the development time. What percentage of players race swapping to a new race do you consider sufficient? Should the new race end up more popular than any other race or is it enough that it won't end up the least played race?
Here is a survey of people swapping to Au Ra:
http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...from-reddit%29
Right now we have a situation of roughly 50% of players going Au Ra, leaving Elezen the least played race (<5%). Obviously forum goers don't represent the player base accurately but the survey gives a rough estimate.
This made me think about what the purpose of adding a new race is. Is it to make the population more diverse, or to reinvent something that already exists and make people pay for change race? I believe that currently they aim for the latter and I find it unfortunate because it's actually making the races less diverse (since one race will be more popular than any other before it and others even less popular than before). Imagine how much the player base could grow if they added more variety. Reading the WoW forums I get the impression that some of the players who are currently quitting would play FFXIV if everything wasn't so cute and teenage looking. Race options are directly affecting their decision of buying the game. Would it really be that bad to see "ugly" characters running around, especially if it was only one of the clans of a hypothetical new race?
You mean "never use it" like half the US players in WoW playing as something else than the two kinds of elves, human, dwarf or gnome? (Source: realmpop.com)
As subscribers i feel the decisions we make with our wallets and time are what affects the development teams direction, that by and far seems to me to show that what the current player base wants is cute rather than fierce, beautiful instead of ugly. If anyone were to read the forums and look at what the avatar of the individual requesting and "ugly"/ "fierce" option it could easily be thought " You know they say they want "x" but numbers show "y" to be what is often picked..." I play as a Highlander, i will never not play as a Highlander because it suits me best, i feel it is my representation in Erozea. I enjoy the fact I appear to be an adult male, I love the Ala Mhigan lore, I also think the female characters among the most attractive. However Highlanders are not very popular, there will be even less of them once Au Ra come on the scene. As a subscriber, as as avid role playing game enthusiast i can appreciate the want and need to play as something that best represents you. In no way, shape, or means am I disregarding this fact. I simply feel that the standard has been set, this game, this series is not one in which Amalj'aa, Ixali, Kobold, Sahagin, Sylph, or any other anthropomorphic hybrid would be seen as a viable player option.
The idea of a race solely designed to be "ugly" will simply not happen, it denotes a player would be in some way ostracized by virtue of physical appearance. Monstrous may fall in to that category but something more bestial is not out of the question, however one should really look at whom they are asking of this from...
Behold i give you the predecessors of the current five races of Van 'Diel

Now one can successfully argue that these fine folk are also the origin of the current races of Erozea... Imagine if everyone with a Miqo'te had their character changed to look like this more feral, bestial, savage race... Roe's, and lala alike, throw the elves in the mix for good measure. By all means say people would have been ok with it, i would simply have to call those people a liar. The outrage over characters needing a butt slider went on for twenty eight pages...
I agree with your post a lot, Personally I do see my character as a representation of myself in FFXIV atm and I have been waiting for a race I feel more suitable to come a long and I am exstatic with what SE have done with the Au Ra it's definately the race that is me and suits me well and I cannot wait to change my Miqo which I have had since 2.0 *I was Lala in 1.0* has been a place holder for such an event.
And onto the second part of your post if they did that to Miqo while I was playing one I would fantasia asap to Hyur though the female Hyur running animations bug me to hell I still think female Hyurs are so much prettier, anything that looks bestial to me I personally pass up asap.
I like to look good inrl and I like to look good in game there's nothing wrong with expressing myself or my personality ingame.
Funny thing... the Mithra shown above actually looks more human than the current Mithra in FFXI. Mithra have cat noses. That Mithra concept art does not. If anything, that may as well be Miqo'te concept art (it even looks like they don't have a tail, making them more human than Miqo'te).
Yes, people would be peeved to wake up one day to find their race changed to something else, but that's not what anyone is asking for. Something new (and not something I can easily make look like something already available) that adds variety and more choice is what we're asking for.
Took a few short minutes.
http://i.imgur.com/m9I4qUX.png
Id still rather see an advanced set of options in the creator for adding mixed heritage features. Before you assume the worst freak of nature possible, consider what it would do to each race. You could have a much shorter roe or elezen, a hyurs facial structure and motions with elezen ears, or a taller more mature looking lalafell, even a miqote with roes hour glass figure for those wanting bigger butts and breasts. And according to that poll from 1.0 Im not the only one who wanted this lol.
Side note, using wow as an example is bad because even the humans look like disney cartoon dwarves to me. So if wow players arent coming here because its "cute" I seriously question their taste in art design. Yes, its impossible to make a genuine ugly character (face paint doesnt count). But I dont want to see disfigured characters with silly names for the lulz like I have so many times in other mmos.
I wouldnt mind face options for non beautiful people. Elderly, chubby, etc etc. But I dislike face sliders from other mmos that let you look seriously disfigured in a comical way.
TESO didn't get the memo. Given this has been a problem with ALL the Elder Scrolls games, Pretty landscape, balloon-animals for faces on essentially identical bodies on everyone regardless of age, race and gender.
WoW has some pretty terrible game models, but I've never played it, so I can't really say "it's ugly and I won't play it" rather I'm saying "I'd rather play something that is closer to cute, and WoW has nothing cute."
Mabinogi did this.
Ye gawds. Basically the Giant race went from being super-chunky and kinda ugly looking to rather fit and much more cute looking. Reason: People weren't playing them.
What would be more interesting... to borrow a page from Mabinogi at least.... would be to actually have some variation in age that reflects height/size. Mabinogi actually had some internal mechanic that allowed for arbitrarily changing this, but the game actually had height, muscle tone and fatness on top of age... for a game designed in 2003, that's actually pretty clever way to get more variation from what was otherwise just 1 race (then three, the elves and giants were introduced around G6 for North America from the start.) The most obvious limitation of this was that you'd have "10 year old" characters with the same breast size as the 18 year olds... because they had to ALL share the same armor set.
Yet... there are still no games that actually go beyond a biped playable race. The only game that actually ever did this in any shape or form was Spore.
As much as people want yet another cute looking human-type with animal ears in the game, we should really think beyond that. (Not that I would ever oppose Viera.)
I admit I probably wouldn't play them but more diversity is nice, If we are to have more human/animal hybrids at least make them look more 'wild' (like mithras or galkas for example).
