Lol!:D I'm a girl IRL but play highlander male because was totally awkward when guys hit on me when my character was female :o It's like why?
Now I can look big and tough and sometime make my character wear skimp outfits to weird out the guys :p
As a spud who identifies myself as a Potato Chip, you would first have to wonder "Is it worth it?" If you are A: Role playing then whatever character you see is indeed just that. Whether they be a Miqote, a Lalafell or a Roe. If B: You are just genuinely curious, then just ask. Worse thing that happens is you upset them by asking non-FFXIV related questions and they stop being your friend.
Personally I think you shouldn't worry too much about what's inside their trousers and just worry about if they make you happy.

Just ask ~ Instead of wasting time trying to identify then again there are creeps that role plays as girls. I had someone whom admitted being a guy,RPs as a girl. And when people ask him,he keeps telling them hes a girl. But it's whatever. I really don't care whether the person is male or female.
So....it creeps you out that someone RPs as the opposite gender but you don't really care whether the person is male or female IRL?

When I played FFXI a few of us were talking about a new member in our linkshell, wondering if they were a girl or a guy and we were all coming up with convoluted ways to figure it out. In the middle of this party conversation one of our members asked the player in linkhell chat:
"Hey, when you need to go to the bathroom do you go in the door labeled Gentlemen or the one labled Ladies?"
Which was probably the most discreet way this particular player could ask :p
I'm a girl who plays a lalafell female. I like running and jumping around in game when I'm bored with nothing else to do. I like to wear whatever clothes I choose to wear. (At a time I wore my Kirimu coat for a while, out of happiness from being able to afford one at all.)
I have a friend who loves their pink spring dress pieces. As some may know this isn't a set that's too revealing and they wear it as a glamour. They are a male player on a girl character.
(We also both use :3 as well as other faces sometimes, along with a few other friends who are male and female alike.)
I mean... honestly I think the only sure way to know is to just ask directly. It doesn't have to be the first thing you ask, you can end up getting along with another player who could end up being a male player just because they have a sweet personality by the way.
Not everyone has the same personality or approach/reaction to things so I don't think just one method will help solve the gender of a bunch of people aside from straight out asking. If the gender of other players really matters all that much anyways. ^^;
A lot of guys play female characters and do not wear revealing clothing. It is hard to tell from the way they move their character and it might sometimes be hard from how they write. I feel it is easier sometimes to see from their writing, play style in dungeons make me wonder sometimes as well.
I'm a girl but no one figures out in game that I am unless I say so. I haven't gone through the entire thread yet but calling it tumblery is tempting me to get my cup of coffee and go through it :P
umm... haven't seen anyone answer this, but Cis- is short for Cis-gendered, thich means of a single gender "male", or "female". the opposite is "trans-gendered".
There was an entire episode of South Park on it. Seriously, never would have known the difference if they hadn't explained it.
now, if someone calls anyone here a "cis-sy", I may lose my composure and die laughing. jus' saying.
I actually hate putting my female character in revealing clothes, just makes me cringe thinking about some other guy looking at my character then getting off in some way.
I confess, I put my female character in sexy clothes.
(pirate street punk, riding jacket w/whip, and the occasional massive iron doomplate are sexy to me okay)
Oh, I have lots of fun trying to guess people's genders (and ages) and I'm rather past 30. xD
How they talk has a lot to do with it. And I wait for them to slip up. Toughest ones to guess are the females running male characters.
Of course, if they start talking about pads, waxing, and period woes... chances are they're a girl. XD Had a member of my FC do this on occasion, just to remind the guys that there were actual females around. XDD
But when it comes to gameplay (what matters), there's no difference. :)
Ask them their gender. If you are still in doubt, then just ask to voice chat.
I remember using Skype with a group of ppl from my FC. I m not in that FC, but we are still in touch. We even leave cam/voice chat on while playing cuz that's how cool we are xP(I say this because we can be partying other ppl ,but we are on Skype. It helps us to communicate in a effective and faster way compared to /tell in game)
Just curious. How is it even possible to catfish someone in an MMO?
Seriously.
Should Square require gender and age verification to make sure everyone's avatars matches their IRL appearance? Should they add some body types as well to make sure fatties are still fat in their virtual fantasy world?
This whole premise is ridiculous. If you want to date and socialize while knowing what someone actually looks like... do it IRL, or through a video over IP service.
Shockingly, virtual fantasy characters just might not look like the person behind the keyboard/controller.
Well, this is an idiotic/banal topic, but one I see depressingly often. Firstly, the answer is obvious; you ask them. End of story. There is a very, VERY great deal of arrogant presumption in ways to "tell" for sure who is or isn't which, but why bother with that?
Secondly, I'm not sure why people care so much since the genitals of the person you're talking to really don't matter that much unless you're planning to get there. And if you ARE planning that but you don't even know such basic information...well, that's a whole other problem, isn't it?
I'm male and play female characters generally, for the record.
Just see if they turn into a bitch once a month.
Once I had a full pt of females in Aion and we found out because the leader asked. The reason she asked was because we all had 'flatter' boobs on the chest slider.
I jump around all the time in game.. O_O Didn't know that was a thing.
OH NO
HOWEVER SHALL WE OVERCOME THIS VILE PERFIDY
freakin' christ people
I don't care about the gender of people I play with. As long as I have fun, they could be a bunch of monkeys and it wouldn't really matter.
I don't get it. Why does it matter? If I'm having fun playing with other people I don't care if they're a man or a woman.
Even if a guy tells you he is a girl, what does it matter? It's not like gender bears any importance apart from the kind of equipement you have between your legs.
- A guy who plays girls, because girls are awesome
Thought people played FFXIV to socialize and raid together, do fates, dungeons and have a good time immersing themselves in the fantasy world. I guess for some people FFXIV is a dating service where a person's real-life gender is the most important factor in his/her gaming experience lol. I play FFXIV to escape reality so to me, you are who I see your character as and who you are in real-life doesn't even cross my mind.
It really doesn't matter at all. It isn't like XIV is a dating service where people view attractiveness, lifestyle, life goals, and location. But one time I had a friend who pretended to be a girl, and pretended a lot of things about their life. It was almost like RPing because I found out he lied so much. It ended up hurting, because we spent so much time together talking. Sharing a lot of private "Girl talk" and life talk. Our friendship died because he was such a liar, and it started from his pretending to be a girl.
