There isnt a game released any time soon that will kill FFXIV. We have lost 90% of the people who purchased the game already. The remaining 10% most likely arent going anywhere... well until SE starts to charge a monthly fee that is.

I must say for one I have never been a huge fan of Diablo, I played it and i dont really like it. I have been a huge fan of the final fantasy series and I only stopped playing FFXI because of budget issues, and although FFXIV is currently f2p, once it goes p2p if I can only afford one p2p game it will undoubtably be FFXIV.

That facepalm Ascii needs a bit of work. Head like Kryten from Red Dwarf, swollen hand and someone chopped off his thumb.
I gotta say, I wasn't expecting D3 to be mentionted here. D3 is a big game, but as others have stated, it's a completely different market.
As for the usual suspects, we need to look out since Tera has an amazing director. And we all know how good TOR is gonna be, since you know, Bioware is listening to it's players.
Tera is way way to overhyped for a currently failing game... it has yet to do good in any market, including the nation where it was originally designed for. They had good ideas but atm unless they do major overhauls I do not see it doing much better then XIV honestly.
TOR we have to see, it is being designed for solo players more or less with very dated graphics and mechanics already. Though I have no doubt the story line will be good, that is about as far as my interest is in it. I am not a starwars fan so no draw to the Jedi thing, and everything else looks very meh to me. Game is just not for the mmo gamer that wants group based content from everything I seen.
I honestly do not think ToR will dent FFXIV Either... only mmo that stands a decent shot is probably GW2 and even that will not kill it off.
Widely accepted by who? Where did this number come from? If baseless rumors/conjecture/speculation is/are 'good enough' to use in place of actual facts, there's something wrong. If you have ZERO evidence to back up your claim, you have no business making the claim.
i hated Diablo II, ill try to watch the D3's review.
Only way FFXIV is going to be success is if it tries to be unique like FFXI, not generic MMO shit like its doing now(it is getting slightly better tho).
I personally would not play diablo 3. But games like Tera do interest me.
I came back after a roughly 4 month or so, the UI did indeed improve a bit making it easier to play but the battle system still seems very unresponsive (I play a conjurer). Whenever I cast spells it doesn't seem to react immediately according to what I cast or when I wanna switch quickly between spells and normal range atk, it just won't react for me. Maybe I just suck at fighting or it just simply react very slow.
However, in general, it hasn't make me wanna come back to the game very much other than looking at pretty graphics and perhaps the instance quest which makes it no different than any typical rpg.
'Widely accepted' numbers have ranged from 10 people to 100k in numbers. Now, I'm not going to be all nit-picky about a few extra zeros, but that's quite a huge difference. So such 'estimates' do nothing except cause more false rumours and numbers to circle around. It would be so much better to just say the FFXIV has LESS numbers, instant of actually making it a quantitative amount. The fact that this game has less people playing is true. So stick with that.
Diablo III.. meh whatever. The only thing that will be pulling my time away from this is The Old Republic later this year.
The thing about Diablo III is it's not designed to be a full-time game like a MMO. You play it for a few weeks, maybe a month or two then move on. Come back a few months later give it another whirl.
At least thats how DII worked for me. it never really killed my FFXI time.
Leave his ass alone. It's quite accurate. ;)Quote:
Another statistic pulled straight from the fountain of accuracy that is TonyMontana's ass.

Not interested in Diablo III or Terra Online. I will stick to FFXIV, since I know it is going to get better and better with every single patch. The only thing I hate right now is that I can not seem to find a proper, active linkshell. As long as I can fix that problem I will be around for the next few years.
Ah. Sorry, I guess I have to clarify. The 25 down is down from the steady down since October 2010, and the different types of measuring player population used in the two assessment periods suggests that the true percentage of drop-outs is actually higher. The exact statistics are hidden somewhere in the Allakhazam post; please understand that I'll not repeat myself on this forum in detail - I don't like my posts being locked down.
Of course you are free to challenge the validity of the data; I don't want to preach the 7th Umbral cataclysm. The data I provided should be considered nothing more than a (in my opinion: rather reliable) estimation that helps to curb both the most irrational illusions about FFXIV's success, as well as the doomsday fantasies of... well, there's always some doomsayers.
@mysterytaru
LTR. Data from the first assessment period was compiled using the /sea all command. There's little room for making up fake numbers. Data from the second asessent period was compiled using a pretty smart indirect method, and it is not linked to Sankaku in any way. But as I said: Feel free to believe what you want to. There's always the possibility that all those sources are just evil people who are lying just to slow down the inevitable victory parade of a successful game. Especially since they are Japanese and hate their own country and SE so much, and want Korean and US games to succeed.
P.S.: And of course, there's always the possibility that 1.18 and the following patches will bring back shiploads of old players, and also entice a number of curious new players to buy the game.
There are ways to fudge the '/sea all' such as cherry picking when you do it to reflect the results you want, depending which side of the argument you are on. What I read in that was based on numbers from Cornelia which is useless for determining an accurate picture of the whole player base. Finally, the chart was linked from Sankaku and they've been dumping on and misrepresenting FFXIV since beta.
Any and all number presented by players or any other third party are not enough to pull random stats out of thin air and base claims upon. Unless you present official stats, nothing can be assumed true or accurate, and even then there are people who would claim SE is lying just because they can and *DO* want to see this game fail, and don't think there aren't JP players who want that. They exist on both sides of the ocean.
I don't know why people would "cherry-pick" server data, nor why Cornelia would be a unique exception; last time I checked it was the No. 3 largest server in October 2010, so if anything, player numbers should be lower on the other servers. Unless, of course, something absolutely special happened on Cornelia.Quote:

Then again, I said: feel free to believe what you want to. I didn't come here to preach. I just offered a compilation of data a number of people might consider interesting, especially since there are no other sources available. Ever thought about why SE suddenly pulled the plug on official stats? To hide the overpopulation?
I may drop this game like a bad habit once phantasy star online 2 is released later this year.
I don't really get these threads... the game ALREADY failed big time. There is no arguing that. Diablo III probably won't have much of an effect on the console gamers who will play FFXIV.
Kind of a weak argument compared to XIV lol.
TERA only lost 50% of its subs in KOR. XIV lost half a million worldwide. XIV is a worldwide embarrassment and failure. TERA is still surviving with 100k active and its PAY 2 PLAY lol. Not to mention now out in Japan.
Also you're wrong about the D3, I play XIV now and then, just waiting for it to become a good game so I only play now on updates, but come D3 (or any other mmo) I will be forgetting about XIV for a long time (probably continue playing on updates only). So it is not just those who have already quit.
says the kid who watches anime...
i have played plenty of Amazing RPG's.. KOTOR wasn't one of them... Chrono Trigger, FF1,2,3,4,5,6,7, Xenogears, Breath of Fire, Secret of Mana.. should I continue? I just don't care for that style of game.. didn't make it far enough to tell you if the story was any good because I hate ARPG's..
And what are you talking about? Square made this genre what it is today in america.. FF7 changed the face of RPG gaming in the USA.. say what you want but no one does story line games like Square did.. Square-Enix.. not so much.. but part of that family is still there so give credit where credit is due young one.
Maybe the data I gave was wrong, maybe it was wrong by a ton. Maybe FFXIV has lost very few if any players. Maybe we are almost 11 months into retail and still playing free because SE is just really friendly.
Except Blizzard is now hiring for console developers to port Diablo III over to PS3 and Xbox360 which will cut even further into the Console market for FFXIV. Yes it is still probably a good year or so off but the fact of the matter is I fully believe SE is running out of time. Not to mention the NA and EU playerbase pissed off over multiple things especially content and billing. Many of us feel ripped off by the company due to the enormous amount of money we shelled out in the middle of a recession for the game to be released in the state that it was.
Some of you are going to state the Earthquake and Tsunami are to blame for the delays blah blah, yes the company may still be under power restrictions, however no damage was done to SE offices or servers so nothing was lost. While the game may have been down the developers were still at work working on patches and updates to the game. However the situation is no different then what happened on Sept 11, 2001, Dec 26, 2004 or Aug 29, 2005, all tragedies, all causing catastrophic damage, and all forcing us to think about what is really important.
Since the game was released in Sept 2010 we have only had 3 real updates, and of those 3 Nov Xp, NM's in 1.15 and 2 Dungeons in 1.18 the game has not really changed at all. I personally love the Eastern style of MMO as does a vast majority of MMO players, however SE is behind on the times with its innovation. Call it greed, call it arrogance I don't really care, at this point in my eyes unless SE makes major changes in it's policies and procedures this game will never recoup and be what we all hoped and wanted it to be.
SE needs to change the game dramatically before the 1 year anniversary or many in my eyes will never look back. This is not 2003 where only 3 Major MMO were on the market. This is the age of WOW where the consumer demands quick and precise updates, innovation, and large communities. FFXIV failed to deliver on 2 out of 3 because of its rushed launch due to a CEO that wanted nothing but a 3 million dollar bonus.
Sure. Didn't you know we are a chosen people? ;)Quote:

ill play both no big w/e
How can you mention such amazing game's and then mention FF7..... and talk about storyline.... Seriously, you don't go from Chrono Trigger, Xeno the *** GEARS! Final Fantasy 6! To FF7.... you just dont do that, sure FF7 is the most sold FF ever, but it was a game, that came out at the right time, more than being in the same legue as the other games you mentioned <.<
Oh no!!! The fact of the matter is that you personally believe something you pulled out of your... well where people generally pull such speculation out of. Wait, I still don't care. Selbina has seen a large population increase in terms of returning players, and many people who have bought the game (I hear it's quite cheap now) since 1.18.
I'm not sure how much money Square is making still off of those retail sales or if that is mostly retailers lowering the prices to clear out their existing inventory, but I'd be willing to bet (as a matter of fact) that S-E is seeing this and taking the hint that people want more patches like 1.18
This. If FFXIV's gonna die. It won't be becuase of Diablo3. And thats coming from a HUGE fan of the Diablo series, and many Blizzard games.
But if they truly like FF, they will stick around to see hows this game turns out.
I myself will probably quit playing FFXIV for quite awhile when I get a Diablo3 beta invite (PLEASE!) or at release, but you bet I'll come back to this game when it's nice and flushed out. By then PS3 release might be here, and a flood of new players will be here and kicking. :)
Most likely Diablo3 will NOT goto consoles. That was a rumor. Just becuase the website advertises "Needs future console developers" Doesn't mean it's Diablo3. It's ben said Blizzard are eventually going back to their console roots. But I'm guessing it'll be a whole new game. Besides, Diablo3 will require way too many keybinds and such, and with it's heavy fast paced action, and competitiveness. It won't work out too well.
I know what your gonna say though "but Bouldars gate did it!". But that game was a shitty rip of Diablo..
