I think everyone should be more concerned about player numbers dropping due to the release of the Duck Dynasty game. We all know how much everyone's been anticipating that game's release.
Something to note regarding graphical quality:
You can't really compare ARR and WoW, because the style is totally different.
Older models and environments in WoW seriously do look 2004, but the presence of such things in-game is rapidly dwindling, and with the character model revamp, plus everyone in newer zones, it's practically WoW 2. It maintains the colorful, chunky, cartoony aesthetic, keeps the special effects low-key enough so that system requirements remain humble, but easily stands next to modern games in terms of visual fidelity.
What it has never gone for (and never should) is photo-realism. FFXIV's environments do this, albeit with a fantastical flourish in terms of topography, and the characters themselves adhere to a sort of low-key anime aesthetic, as most FF games in recent generations have.
FF style and Warcraft style is apples and oranges.
Btw, WoW is getting a whole new engine look, sooooooooooooooooooooo
Predicting responses based on past and consistent behavioral patterns does not make one jaded. It just means you know that person's particular thought pattern on some level.

On topic, I'm on the fence. This game is my haven away from WoW and their asinine "lore". I can see some people leaving to check out the changes and then coming back here, as I somehow doubt WoD will bring any sort of revolution to WoW in terms of content.
Also, am I the only one that saw this thread title and thought World of Darkness was coming out with something new?
1. It will but with a big impact at the launch of it (2.4 will be around the same time so people will still be doing that too). Long-term impact will happen but will probably be small. Those that play WoD will grow tired of it and look for something new, some may come back to ffxiv whilst others move to the next big mmo release.
2.1 The sub battle has WoW overshooting ffxiv by a big margin and I think that's a good thing. From personal experience I've noticed that the smaller the community is, the more it's community actually behaves like actual humans. I know since hunts people are seeing the beast side of the community but I personally haven't been trolled by random strangers/fc members/duty members (problems I regularly had on wow)
2.2 Though I've primarily been playing ffxiv since arr beta wave 2, I've still been following the development of wod closely. Most the features that were announced at blizzcon were severely limited when the design had to be implemented in the game (garrisons losing a massive portion of it's customization, faction cities being changed to generic faction camps, and entire zones being removed for a later patch). The graphics, though a big improvement over the old don't impress me really but I understand that they are limited by a bloody old engine so you cant really expect amazing graphics. The first 3 races announced(dwarf, gnome, orc) were beautifully done and polished but the later ones felt rushed.
3.1 I'd say, for the most part, my server is pretty much the same since launch day. I still have to wait until ungodly hours to make an alt with the restrictions so the population is still there. The separate pockets of communities exist based on game preference. Old friends quit, new friends join, it's simply the way it goes.
3.2 I do feel, personally, that the CT patches ruin the experience at this point even if it is my endgame. It shoves the medium strength gear down your throat(buying ilvl 90 sets with hunt seals) within a hour or two and leaves you waiting behind weekly lockouts to get another piece of gear. Remember that drg you worked through coil 1 in 2.2 to get a ilvl 90ish set? Bam you just got a full set for it in 30mins of hunting so go hang it on the wall to gather dust until the next coil patch while you gear your main once per week with tome and ct gear.
Same thing happened in 2.1 as it is now, only in 2.1 it was the tomestone droprate that caused this.
The views expressed above are my own biased views so do with them as you will. It's not an attack on anyone for choosing one over the other.
tl;dr Yes, I predict it will, but not a long-term huge impact.
Stay classy ;)
How it always is for WoW Expansions now in days:
- 2-4 weeks of WoD
- Back to whatever game they were at ( unless you were always playing WoW, then you will play alot longer)
The way you said it is pretty jaded and actually defined as a personal attack though. Anyone who's kept up with ARR development already knows that's basically what he's been saying, because he said he wanted to essentially do what they did with XI by using EQ as the base.
It kinda depresses me to agree with this. As fun as some of the new features look that are rolling in with WoW 6.0, the story has been a mess since Cataclysm, particularly coming after Wrath which had some of the most intensely satisfying storyline payoff I've ever felt in a game. While Pandaria had some really fun vignettes, the main plotline of Warcraft continues to be an ugly mess dominated by painfully unlikeable NPCs.
XIV:ARR seems to have set out with the explicit purpose of making players feel like a true, vital part of the setting, in both a gameplay and lore sense. You see a bunch of crazy awesome adventurers running around and everyone's personally saved the world at least once or twice because that is what happens in Eorzea. The NPCs are kept relatively low-key and complement, rather than eclipse, the role of player characters, and the sense of immersion and investment felt from this kind of pointed, deftly-wrought design and writing philosophy never ceases to charm.
WoW is inspired by Everquest. In a more serious way though. It's rough to say this game is inspired by WoW alone. The fact remains that WoW didn't have things like quest tracking at launch. These features are actually from games like Aion. WoW has quest tracking too now, but not at launch.
So the raid progression is more like WoW. That's a truth.
it will probably drop...especially if they don't hurry the hell up and push 2.4 out before november.
it's not "rough to say" when yoshi p himself said xiv was modeled directly after WoW.....Quote:

Hm. I think some servers are gonna be hit more than others. Buddies who played WoW before may go back as a group leaving some FCs kinda vacant. My server... I haven't heard a peep about WoD (I keep seeing World of Darkness too...), but we do have a good proportion of console players in my FC (like half or more) and many for whom XIV is their first mmo. Personally, I'm a bit more curious about what will happen when EQN comes out on ps4. >.>;
Your personal interpretations doesn't equal what he actually said. Now if you want to prove me wrong, feel free to post some sources though we both know that's highly unlikely of you.
Citation needed. Being modeled directly from and being taken inspiration from are two different things.
Oh come on ARR is basically WoW-Lite plus armory system, minus open world, anyone who played WoW and ARR can see this clearly.
On topic though, there are quite alot of players here that played WoW and im pretty sure alot of them will check WoD out but there was a reason they stopped playing.
I played WoW for 6 and a half years and while i have fond memories of it the direction they took with both the story and gameplay in Cataclysm put me off, and from what ive heard Pandaria did not fix any issues and story went even further to the shitter.
So i wont be checking it out, unless my old wow friends will drag me to it.
I'm a WoW player but my main MMO today is FF. I'll be playing WoD but I'll keep playing FF the most.
Simples as that.
It is already going down, at least as far as I can tell. All my 1.0 friends quit and are going to come back for the expansion IF they fix progression. Horizonal, etc.
Lot of people saying they going back to WoW for the expac. *shrug*
WoW is getting more of the same every expansion. I'll be playing but since I get to 100 I'll keep playing FF like I do now.
If you go see statistics, even with the xpacs WoW's population keeps decreasing since WotLK
You can keep personally attacking all you want - Doesn't change the fact despite people wanting to obviously move past WoW developers still try to mimic it and still want that playerbase. So trust me, I get it, but there's a reason this genre stagnated, and I can tell you it's not because developers are trying something different.
Also, ARR still struggles with basic system concepts that even the most generic of Korean MMOs did better, and they too copied the 'WoW standard.'
WoD's graphics, still look like they are years behind FFXIV. Just my opinion. I do understand it is a different style, but as a former WoW player, this update isn't all that amazing.
And can we blame them? it's the most profitable MMO, every company wants a bite. If the new expansion is a success and all the players go back to wow we may have a golden age here.
Edit:
Put him on your ignore list, talking to that guy is a waste of posts.
Taking what's good from other successful games and giving it your own spin is how games will get better. The way you speak, you make it seem like ARR doesn't have its own identity and that it's just another clone yet many differences were pointed out which makes the game unique in its own right. If you refuse to believe it, that's your own right and if you think the game still struggles with basic concepts, then why are you still here ? Certainly the game must be doing something right if you're still playing it and not out there playing WoW, Korean MMOs or FFXI.
I left Wow, No plans in going back for 2 months worth of content.
Where as FFXIV bring new content every 3-4 months.
The fact that this is a legit/serious question is troubling. WoW is buttcrack old and not that enjoyable.
If XIV producers are also concerned with WoW (Withered old World),.......competition will only get stiffer.
I lost faith in XI and XIV, I see both sticking around for awhile, but only sticking around, nothing more.
I'm thinking that it'll be a blip in logins, but not much of one in subscription numbers. While I knew that WoD was the new expansion (I played through MoP and still follow some of the Blizzard news), I have a hard time seeing that acronym and not thinking "Wait, there's a world of darkness MMO coming out?" For the record, I want this.
They didn't discard it, they lost it. Project Titan is Destiny which Activision had Bungie release. Truth be told, Bungie was a better fit.
I think the only MMORPG that actually put any dent and really to watch for is Everquest Next. But WoW? Meh...
That's exactly how they originally expected XIV to be though, so I don't think they care much about active playerbase numbers in the end. It seems like Yoshi-P understands the fleeting nature of the MMORPG genre and its players, so they're essentially planning around that. You'd be an idiot to truly expect your game to be a "WoW killer" of any sort. The MMORPG market is slowly dying out (for now), meaning the gravy train is coming to a halt. MMORPGs aren't as popular or appealing as they once were, so you're not going to instantly make a ton of money just for half-assing your content.
Of course, that doesn't mean it won't be profitable or that no one will play, but rather it's a case where no one will ever produce something to top the epitome of the genre (WoW). It's like expecting someone to create a "Mario killer". People will try, some will claim it will or has happened, but the reality is that it just won't happen. The name itself is a testament to that fact. When you think "platformer" (assuming said person knows what that is), most would think "Mario". You ask someone what "Mario" is, chances are high they'll know that it at least has something to do with video games. When you think "Final Fantasy", you think RPG... specifically traditional console RPGs. And no matter what era it is, when you think MMORPG, you will think "World of Warcraft".
I remember the last WoW graphics 'overhaul'. A few filters and a bit more edge-blurring. The actual characters were just as low poly as they had ever been. Suffice to say, I'm not going to hold my breath that this new one is much different.
I don't see myself ever going back to WoW at this point. In my opinion, FFXIV is superior in nearly every way.
WoW still doesn't even have armor that is more than just a texture placed on the body. They only model shoulder pads and helmets. That and the new race models are very hit or miss. I find that way too many of them actually look worse than the older models, despite the higher polygon count and texture resolution increase.
Lol, because apparently taking some elements from a popular game and improving on it as well as adding more to the game to make it more unique apparently means FFXIV is a clone of WoW. Ooookay people. Pretty sure you guys are only looking at the dungeons and raids for some reason. WoW set the standard for MMOs, and people for some reason don't understand that.
Also, we're definitely going to see a player decline for a couple months after the expansion, just like WoW's population might go down for a bit after FFXIV's expansion. That's just the nature of MMOs. We lose and gain players all of the time.
