I ended this thread a while ago lol. Honestly, thank you everyone for your opinions and thoughts on the topic. It helps tremendously in knowing the small differences and strategies between both tanks and now I know, that I probably need to become a better WAR. Though, I'm not complaining at all about being OT, I do like playing MT but ultimately OT better lol (my opinion). Thanks again everyone for sharing your knowledge with me.
i play pal 101 and war 102. i use the war when theres mobs and pali when i gotta stun but having run with equal tanks i think pali is better as mt and war as ot. for on pali has stronger single target aggro imo. i pull over wars and lose to palis of the same level. for heals again pali takes it. for ot buffs, you cant use all your combos as war without aggro problems early on so war as ot is easier for me at least. too bad it seems like it should be the opposite so you can IB with war but taking huge hits is dangerous on war
There is no beef. Tanks have both leveled and equally geared. In your note. You were the problem. You were using your full enmity rotation when you shouldnt have been. Thats it. The OT's responsibility is to keep their hate #2. If you are taking it away you are being a bad OT. Watch the enmity meter. If you are taking hate you are being irresponsible.
There is no beef. You take whichever you feel like cause you keep them equally geared within 1 ilvl (cause of a shield).
The damage is about the same if the PLD does not have the Storm's Eye debuff from a WAR.
Last night a guildie and I went into t5 duty finder - we've both been stuck on it and are getting a FC group together to do it but figured hey, we're bored, why not. He went in on his ilvl 95 warrior and I on my i93 BLM. The self-appointed "leader" decided he couldn't be a main tank because he apparently "didn't have the acc" to main tank twin and hit from up front, so the paladin would be the main tank despite having slightly lesser gear (and I do mean it was only a slight difference. The paladin was geared very well, I'm not bashing the pld in any way).
It struck me as odd that the fear was an ilvl95 warrior couldn't keep threat on a fight with a minimum of i82. We just went with it despite the guy thinking the best way to teach people to stack was to number everyone's head and then tell the numbers to stay together and the playstation icons to stay together (distracting at best, causes you to not see important graphics over your head at worst) but I did get the feeling that for some reason, Paladin was just preferred and it had nothing to do with my friend's alleged lack of accuracy.
in the misquoted words of kitru, both tanks are ridiculously balanced.. that being said, equally geared: PLD is the "better" tank for sustained high damage mitigation, WAR is "better" for predictable burst damage mitigation. this is as MT.
as OT, I can't recall the exact thread where he broke down the #s, but both tanks can put out basically equal DPS

The difference:
When MTing, War does more damage.
When OTing, they do similar damage but War still comes on top.
War has Overpower, which does quite significantly more AoE damage and AoE threat.
Point is, War does more damage.
Pld has a bit more defensive CD to play with but most notably they have Hollowed Ground, which trumps Holmgang in every possible way except in PvP.
Pld is more simple to play than War.
The only difference that really matters?
Hollow Ground. You could argue that Overpower makes quite a bit of a difference in AoE situations but those situations just don't exist in the Endgame we have right now. It might feel nice to do a bit of extra damage as War but the difference is not enough to really change anything. You don't NEED Hollow Ground but it is definitely a nice tool to have and can do things Holmgang cannot.
MT, WAR does more damage
OT, PLD does more damage
PLD has better static mitigation, whereas WAR has better spike damage mitigation.
Where does the difference actually matter? A bad PLD is good to have. A bad WAR is atrocious and very likely to not succeed with. Average PLD is...well average. Average WAR is still more difficult to play and by extension more difficult to keep alive. Phenomenal PLD is almost the same as average, with some more game sense (somewhat like ability to think on their feet). A phenomenal WAR is easier to deal with all around, but at the same time very hard to be at this level.
So in conclusion (to this thread that keeps getting revived)
They are about as = as you can get without being the same class.
kudos to SE for actually balancing Tanks something wow never did correctly or at least took them 5+ years
Can we officially call this debate dead?
