Was at night between... 7pm and 10pm or so.
Cault all 3 within 2 heatwaves sitting at 348 gather 250 percep. Skipped the Foragers Rod entirely with a fully melded set. Its possible guys just keep fishing ur luck will come soon. Night or Day dont matter.
OMG is so pissed.. How are people getting these so fast? Heat wave/daytime 363gathering with food and 7/7 bites ive had have gotten away. Wtf is this garbage... I even cranked out the foragers rod first just to be "safe" >_<;;
Anyone have any idea what gathering you need to reliably catch?
Yeah this fish keeps evading me. I lost count how many times it got away. I'm not going to give up though! I really hate the Caravan Eel....
after losing 11/11 with 378 gathering I just tryed to catch one without using food (since many ppl here seem to get them easy with only 350~ gathering)
in the end, 1 heatwave later I got my first olgoi with 359 gathering, 1/1 success
Actually, and this is on a few different threads, but perception is what you don't want too much off unless you are trying to break record sizes with certain fish. That's what I've gathered myself too yet I still meld perception onto my gear. You'll have a higher chance of the fish "getting away" if it's high quality. I caught a HQ The Lone Ripper after my third attempt with 379 gathering.
I caught the fish, but the demimateria are hard to come by. It's irritating that a purely gathering activity like getting a new fishing rod isn't completable by being just a fisher. I either have to spend a bunch of money making stuff to desynth for the chance at the dmateria, or spend a bunch of money buying it.
It's a concerning look at the possible future of the class. I'm still waiting for the day Yoshi says, "Yeah we're getting rid of gathering and crafting as proper classes." That will be a sad day.
It is still unknown if there is a fish that can give Fieldcraft Demimateria III. It's very unlikely, but possible, that some rare Big Fish can give it. There are also rumors that Titanic Sawfish can give Mastercraft Demimateria, but I haven't seen confirmation, just a single Japanese screenshot.
At 349 gathering, I've hooked four Olgois and caught three of them. Some other fish I've lost every time with my gathering though, like the Lone Ripper... So, either random is random (totally plausible) or there's a sweet spot of optimalness that's different for different tiers of fish.
INC qq soz, I had a bad fishing night
So I started my fishing venture for these casually about 1 week and a 1/2 ago...I went to the spot, and would lose them @ 344-360 gathering. So I decided to take a little break from fishing, and instead make gil to buy my fieldcraft IIIs/mastercraft. I finally was able to buy them all last night, and decided from there to also meld some i70 jewelry to get some more gathering/perception as well, and even made some spinach quiche to get even moar gathering/perc.
Was farming heatwaves last night for about 6 hours (ran into a bunch actually, alot of consecutive heatwaves too). My gather was at 373, 300 Perc (no FC buffz). But ya know wut I got? ALOT OF DISAPOINTMENT :((((((
Didn't catch any, lost like 8, and caught a whole lot of eels/hq eels -_- And then this guy in my ls with regular Halcyon rod and 350 gathering (w/food) gets one. It's like "wtf mate".
I feel like I've either melded too much or something, and am just wasting time...I felt like I was wasting time before hand going out there, but it's even worse now. That or I am just extremely unlucky. I know it's RNG but god, I feel like SE is putting secret caps on fish and if you try to push it too hard, you're going to get effed or something.
I also maxed my perc so that I could get higher chance of getting HQ storm rider, but someone in this thread earlier was saying how that's a bad thing? It's like a lose lose situation it seems.
At least last night though in between heatwaves, I managed to spawn the S rank in Fallgourd by fishing up Judgerays :D
/end qq soz
the hq cap for storm rider is 15% and I'm pretty sure even with less then 200 perception you can get it with ease, that means theres no point to get any additional perception
if the theory is true: higher perception > bigger fish > harder to catch > more gathering required to get it
but I cant really say if it works that way, sometimes I'ld say yes, sometimes not
thats atleast a theory which somehow explains why ppl with better gear seem to have much worse success rates in fishing them
several ppl who got a supra have never seen an olgoi again
The "more gathering, less perception" is what I've been telling people to do with Silver Sovereigns. There's a definite line you don't want to cross, where the size of the fish is too much for your gathering. It's strange.
I started some experiments with high gathering/low perception
after 2 heat waves that was the result, after 1 bite
http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/file...03-9a-89f0.jpg
I hadnt the chance to get another bite so far, so I cant say if it was pure luck or not
in the end I got my 3 olgoi with reduced stats
On a semi-related note, people are now saying there's a 2nd fish that can be desynthed into waterproof cotton: http://xivdb.com/?item/7923/Sweetnewt
that newt is a bigger pain in the ass then the olgoi ;D
And it would be the third fish, not the second. The Lone Ripper also can desynth into Waterproof Cotton.
So far, I'm finding the Lone Ripper to be the best for getting waterproof cotton. It has no time requirement, only weather (same as Olgoi), so every weather shift, I pop into Aleport to see if it's Gales. If it is, I fish for 8 hours (24 minutes) at the friendly Sahagin camp. The two big reasons I think Lone Ripper is better are that they are tradable and they are a straight catch (no mooching needed).
For the life of me I've been trying for days to catch the Olgoi and still no luck, 368 gathering and 300 perception- I did a few HQ Magic Carpets though. Using sand leech in heatwave weather and nothing up to this point.
I thought the same thing too but I was in the correct spot in the east side of the map, I also caught monkfish and Caravan Eel on the east side of the map as well, even though it shows you aren't able to catch the sangli monkfish on the east side of the map at Sangoli Dunes.....strange I'll have to try it again
Southeast is still sagolii monkfish territory. The only spot where you can fish up Olgoi is the spot next to the amaljaa encampment.
Also, the game actually tells you where you are fishing now when you cast(I love this). If it says you're fishing at Sagolii Desert, you're in the Sagolii Monkfish/Magic Carpet area. If it says you are fishing in the Sagolii Dunes, it's the Caravan Eeel/Olgoi area.
Then something must be wrong then, I was at the Sangoli Dunes, x25, y37 same place that shows on the fishing Log- that's where I caught the monkfish, eel and the magic carpet. Must be glitched or something- I'll try again tomorrow and see what happens
Anyone have any more observations on the less Perc experiment? Im curious to hear more from fellow fisherman
just recently stumbled upon this thread I will try this out tomorow =o and see what happens.
I just tried shoeless method and got one right away what the hell!

I checked meldable items. Linen Gaiters and Linen Wedge Cap of Crafting both accept +3 gathering melds. Patrician stuff also wont go higher than 3. Best belt seems to be DoH's Dodore Belt with +4 gathering meld. You don't need items to be HQ btw.
This is dumb, I'm not going to make another set for fisher now lol. I hope they fix how perception works with catching fish.
in theory we use less perception to get smaller olgois in trust that they need less gathering to finally catch them
but even with only 177 Perc. your olgoi is huge with 106 ilms, which somehow negates all theorys :p
from trying around with several gathering and perc combos I can just say everything makes no sense for me x)
sometimes I'm able to reel the 2.3 fish with high gathering & low perc, sometimes not
same for high gathering, high perc
Yea its really silly. but i can go on a huge dry spell of nothing with 383G and 304P and then drop my stuff to 355G and 180P and then ill get one and be left thinking did that really affect my catch. Fishing is still very unclear. I wish they could shed some light on exactly what gathering and perception actually did. Instead of speculation and tooltips.
i think so too. 2 points of data is not enough. We all need to go naked and fish like there's no tomorrow
The biggest problem to any kind of extensive testing we try to do is that when a fish gets away, we have no idea how big it is. We can't see if there's a correlation between big fish and failed catches. I'm really not sure how to get the right data here to prove or disprove the hypothesis.
If we assume that the chance of hooking a fish is constant with respect to gathering/perception and the only real variable we're looking for here is the chance of catching a hooked fish, we could check how many times fish were caught vs the fish got away with different levels of perception. We'd need about a thousand data points though to minimize the effects of RNG on the data, and that's a lot of data points...
