Is that fanart or did I miss something on DBZ???

Glowing gear (and giant shoulderpads & spikes, while we're on it) is something that is overused and not cool at all. As I said in another post, it looks cheap, weird, and simply screams "hey, look at me!". Most of the time it's not even functional, either.
Gramul nailed it with his explanation. That's how it should work but, of course, that would require more effort put into the designs. But, didn't we lose some aesthetical things from the 1.x version of the game so that we could have more gear designs? Recolours and glows don't count as proper designs, in my book.
Glows are just another lazy way to rehash stuff, in this case gear designs, it's also the mark of a cheaper MMO since it's easier and faster to code in a flashy glow effect than actually design unique gear, animations and effects. The new generation of MMO players loves them though, which is the audience this game is intended for so it can't be helped.
Damn straight.
I sorely miss the real-world authenticity found in most of the FFXI and FFXIV 1.0 gear.
But sadly, ARR seems to be a shovel-fest of fan-service and gimmicks. Since the change to ARR, the gameplay has been stripped of any real depth.
To compensate, the dev strategy has apparently been to keep the kids distracted with progressively outlandish looking (but ultimately useless) trinkets. -- eg. Mounts, Minions, crazy looking gear, giant glowing weapons, outlandish housing furniture, vanity gear, etc, etc...
In fact, it probably won't be much longer until you'll see:

Everyone make way for Carnival del Eorzea -- soon to be running 24/7 on a server near you.
I find it odd that something aesthetic is so polarized. I just want some more options but this issue is clearly very polarized. Surprised so many are against that
I was okay with glowing weapons but the glowing armor just looks really stupid. I'm sorry.
Yeah, the glow effect is most common in those "free to play but pay to win" games. I just think it's a tactic to allure the young audience who no financial responsibility/obligations to burn a hole in their parents pockets. It looks super tacky, though and I hate that it's becoming common in XIV.
Greetings,
Thanks for the suggestion! The development team will look into whether or not they can implement an option where you could toggle the glowing effect on and off for your character and other players.
I agree, I would really like an option to turn off these glows. There is just too much of it everywhere nowadays...they don't look nice, in my opinion. They're kind of tacky.
The only "glow" that I actually like is the one from the monk relic weapon, imo it actually looks nice. (even thought I don't have a lvl 50 MNK myself. :P)
It's true that too much glow on weapons make them look really weird, I was surprised when I saw that they implemented glow effects like that in ARR, I can't imagine what it would look like in armor in here but I just hope it's not something like this.

too late they already made glowing armors :(
let there be light
If anything, I'd like to see something like this: Video quality is crappy, but the effect is displayed.
At least with things like Ifrit's Sword. Not just a "glow" effect, but actual friggin flames coming from the weapon. Maybe even an Ifrit armor that does the same thing as the video is showing. Or even a Titan armor that has bits of earth floating around you? Or a Garuda gown that swirls with blue wind?
turning on/off glows doesn't fix the problem though imo, we need more varied gear or new models instead of keep getting a new glow for each upgrade.
I can't find a gif of it, or a good video on YouTube, but Pso2 has armor that has special effects. Like ice armour that makes it look like cold air is raidiating off you. And fire armour that... Well... Is on fire. It's pretty cool. I wouldn't mind that.
Course I'm a pso fanboy, has been and always will be My fav. Game. ... (psu is crap and doesn't count. Only pso and Pso2)
High Allagan weapons emit a glow, if armor had that type of glow it'd look pretty nice and not overpowering like the Relic weapons Animus and Novus.
They really fell into the trap didn't they? You have this weapon that is the best in the game and it glows a tiny bit but next patch hits and another weapon is better. That one has to glow a bit more until you reach a point when it glows so much is now red and you can't even see the weapon anymore.
With 2.3 they're starting with armor too. It glows a bit, just a faint glow but 1 year from now we'll look like this.

C'mon SE. Armor in this game is, most of the time pretty cool. You don't have to add lense flare to it. That's such a cheesy way to make armor look cool.
Am I the only person that actually is looking forward to the glow effects on armors? I also hope to see more armors that have a built in glow, like Dragoon Myth armor (the AF has a glow too but it's not as noticeable).
Personally I think they are just testing it out with these armors. Though I imagine they could eventually do much more elaborite patterns and designs. I'm not too impressed with what I saw in the DoE trailer, but that's mostly because the armors they chose to have glow effects on are just ugly in my opinion with or without the glow effect.
The toggle option would be nice but, as someone said, we also want proper new designs, not just old ones with a glow.
By the way, I can't wait to see a THF/NIN running around with glowing weapons and armor. Because that makes sense
FFXIV 1.0, come back please! The only glowing objects there were the torches that lit up the cities at night... and the Linkshell emblem...
See.. no ridiculously glowing everything here.

Edit:
Remember when Belts were visible?!
It doesn't bother me either way. I do wish the glow effects were a bit lighter and had some different animations.
The ability to toggle the glow effect on / off is all that is needed. I too find it tacky.
I don't like this glow affect on armor, but from the video I'm under the impression these are crafted pieces, correct? I believe they were under the "New Recipes" section of the video. So, as long as they don't start making all dungeon/Coil/soldiery gear glow, I don't really see a big problem.
I can see how the glow might bother some people, I wasn't too big on the one for war relic, but if a toggle button isn't something they can implement (which I would support there being one to turn it off) I wonder if it's okay to find a way to select a different glow color maybe different shades / colors, where one could make the weapon not look so bright or can help clash with what the user is wearing.
