FIX the AUCTION HOUSE!!!!

Lowering prices does help things sell more quickly since people that are on the fence about buying a particular item might jump on the chance once they see it posted for 10% less than normal or maybe they have a threshold for what they are willing to pay. I myself am interested in buying i90 gear but I'm not going to touch it until the price drops a little bit more. Someone sold some gear the other day for a very nice price and I'm waiting for it to reach that point.

People complain about this all the time, but I have never met one person who hasn't undercut on the market, even if it was only by 1 gil, everyone I know does it...

If there is a player that honesty hasn't, then they can complain about the market being messed up and undercutters and I'll be good with it. :)

undercutting is not something you want to get rid of, otherwise prices will only skyrocket and nobody would buy, making it an even worse economic downturn than a crashed market. IRL people look for these kinds of sellers like tigerdirect, amazon, newegg that gives products/items at discounted rates or wholesale which is really just undercutting big stores. The difference from IRL vs Eorzea is we have a market index that runs though the stockmarket and wallstreet that forces a value to any product that prevents them from going too high or too low based on real statistical values from whats available on the market.


Eorzea doesn't have a index, so a piece of lumber can be anywhere from 1gil to 9999999999 gil at any given time. The only thing that's stopping it from doing that is NPC vendor prices. Items that do not have a NPC vendor price will flux in any direction based on simple supply and demand theories, to stop that we don't want a static list price, we want an adjustable list price.

An adjustable list price for any item can be done through a internal program that calculates an individual item's history of how much it is sold for, rate of sale, and total items floating about on the market, and adds an average list price based on those values and adjusts every 24 hours. Why 24 hours? if it adjusts in real time, you can flood the board and lock out the list price system all together. Having a daily market adjustment will give headway to buyers and sellers and allow the market to flux through projections. Basically think of the stockmarket. If the market becomes empty on a particular day because of some demand or the market reached its all time low, it returns to the average list price the previous day, forcing sellers to sell higher and locking out undercutters keeping the market too low.

Basically the market is unregulated, and some people like this and some people don't. SE holds its player base responsible for the economic shit hole its in, which is how it should be. If SE steps in and adds large economic regulations from a static program, I think its going to be an even greater shitstorm than ever because we are asking SE to create a form of government.

Shai mentioned having a static list price with a 5% undercut rate that changes the list price, all you are doing is slowing undercutters from crashing the market but it will eventually crash, due to nobody wanting to sell at list price. The base price will just lower and lower until it stays at 1gil a pop. Very small percentage of players are white knights and we cannot rely on them to bring marketboards back up.

I undercut by CHUNKS. I'm not in a bidding war, I'm here to make money by my minimal investment strategy. I'll sell in bulk on a DIFFERENT set of morals than a merchant union style of thinking.

If the market is saying a saw at lvl 20 is worth 12k and it costs me 300 gil to craft said saw, I'm freakin undercutting everyone down to 7k! I make a huge profit, it sells faster, I alter prices more in favor of the buyers, and I can feel GOOD about it. I can make lots and sell them more often since no one wants to pay an inflated price.

Sometimes I like crashing the glamour market for fun, by continuously providing the cheapest glamours until they reach a good price for everyone, then I wait for it to go up and do it all over again.

While most items have been crashed to make the risk of making them not worth crafting, I just stick to neglected tools and items and help keep them affordable.

If I encounter an active undercutter who is matching me hour by hour, I will start cutting by 10-20% a pop. The other player typically keeps on cutting me by 1 gil. So this goes on long enough and the other player gets mad. That's when the fun starts. Most of the time, they give up and either stop undercutting or take their items off the market. BUT for a real treat, the mad people will sometimes start trying to out undercut me! They bottom out their prices by sometimes 80% off the original price. Enter my trollface.jpg moment -- I buy it all and put it right back up for my original price.

Free market -- my suggestion is to not undercut me. Sucks, but I'm talking about HUGE PROFITS.

People have alluded to the reason why others will severely undercut others prices. It's rather simple.

If you undercut by a lot, it is less likely some one will come along and cut it further. That means most likely your item will sell. They are giving away gil yes, but they are also giving them higher chances of selling the item without being undercut.

Who wins? People buying things.

Who loses? People selling things.

It's rather funny that the sellers want to use regulation to inflate their prices. How many of you go around and say how horrible prices are in real life and blame greedy corporations. But then you turn around and do the same thing digitally.

You seem to be forgetting that the OPPOSITE happens too, where items that are easily under 100k can sell for much higher than what they're worth. I'd much rather see items be cheap and easier to obtain rather than more expensive and only obtainable by people who purchase gil. This happened in the last MMO I played. 1000 copper = 1 silver. 1000 silver = 1 gold. 100 gold = 1 gem. level 70 blue +10 items used to cost 10 gold at the MOST now they're 1.5 gems or higher (which gems are very hard to obtain by a person who doesn't pay for their money)

what they need to do is, make a fee for you to put an item in the market and u cant change it or remove it until idk 1-3 days of it that will make to have a better stable economy in the market board

what i want is that the prince doesnt change so much i hate people that undercut more then 25% of all the items in the market it just stupid you see people are buying really fast from the history and people come and lower it so down it sometimes cost more to make it then what u can buy it for which doesnt make sense

EXACTLY. Also, beyond houses there's almost no need for currency in this game anyway. It's just there to 'be there'

i dont care about making gil , i want to get rid of things to get room for new items , if i get undercut too often expect me to sell my items for 1 gil a piece soon :D

I'm for a free market, but i think it should be good if you have to pay a 15% of the value of your item, if you remove or change the price of your auction, while your item price is not 30% above the lowest price on the market.
That should limit constant undercuting and fix the whole problem.

This way, you can still change your price if you're item is really above the market price, but you should not be able to undercut every 5 min.

Even if it's a free market, buyer have to pay a fee to the auction house, and i don't see why a seller who constantly update his price and make them work every 5 min should not pay too.

Listing fees!? Can't change prices? Making the market inefficient is not conducive to a good economy. The greedy fools will just never sell then. Stuff will just sit there.

Look, you list stuff on craigs list and then go back and change its price, is there a fee?
You set sell order for your stock with e-trade, scott-trade or whatever, you change your sell order price is there a fee?
You list your house with a realtor (you list it too high ignoring your realtors advice), you call them up to correct the price, is there a fee?

Seriously, obstructions to commerce does no one any good. You know why you keep seeing your stuff stuck there not selling?
Your price is too high, and it will be stuck there till the end of time.

You guys must be gil spammers trying to force inflation, and incentivize RMT. This is just wrong!

Just like real life, the economy is doing good when stuff is widely available for prices people can afford (in other words lower prices). There is a serious problem with the economy when there is vast canyon between the rich and poor, and people can not afford stuff.

Bottom line, just admit it, you guys are greedy, and want to corner the market and control the prices so only you get rich. It is a good thing it is NOT working for you. And that is better for the community and the player base as a whole.

Market is fine. Leave it alone.

The gw2 idea won't really work, since gw2 could do it that way by offering unlimited selling slots. Notice all the items sold at npc price in the gw2 tp. Don't get me wrong, the gw2 tp was designed very well compared to all other aspects of the game but it wouldn't solve anything. The way ffxiv works well is you can change price but you only have 20x2 slots.

This one is for everyone: Putting a listing cost will only handicap yourself btw. Think about it this way, you put an item up for 100k, someone saw you put it up for 100k and puts his up for 98k. Now you're screwed if you want to go under him since you lose out on your 10 % or wateva % listing fee. Now another person puts its for 95k, 93k, 90k and so on. Everyone else is screwed and the cycle goes on. The way gw2 dealt with this was of course again, thanks to unlimited slots, people could sell in small batches and different prices and they would just leave the unsold stuff at high price till either they sold or the price range changed so much that they had to take it off.

I don't know the situation of XI but the reason for price change is because of the constantly changing meta. The market adapts to new content, new changes etc etc. The market isn't bad, money can still easily be made.


Bottomline, you're being impatient, if someone undercuts you just make your price lower if you want a quick sale or be patient and let them sell first. You can't control how people want to make a sale. If you're tired of being undercut, don't sell things on the market then but it's not right to ask others to not sell item below your price just because its you. It's also not right to blame a perfectly working system.

This is how market crashes happen, where something that's worth 5,000g gets undercut by large chunks in a short period of time because, let's face it at ANY time someone could undercut your price. And by undercutting 1-2k gil you can be sure it won't be worth anything soon.

Just a few days ago the black mage weapon used in the beginning relic quest was sitting at a nice 25k, I sold a few, but here comes some stupid guy just throws his in for 12k... Now, seeing this scared the hell out of me, so I bought his, and undercut the next man by 1 gil... But then this means I had more to sell... Next time I look, mines are still in there, and someone else puts one in for 9k... I have no idea what's going on in their head, but he just cost everyone's chance at making 20k a pop... I really don't get what goes on in there head...

One time I invented a link shell called Business Minded... With the goal to invite everyone to it that I see do stupid undercuts, and eventually inform all the stupid sellers on my server one stupid man at a time. But you know how many people I added to that linkshell... One guy!! Only one man was willing to listen, the rest hit me with, I farmed the materials, I didn't buy them... So its pure profit!!! What do you care what I sell my items for... One man even rudely told me to F off... I just don't get it... I guess these stupid people just don't want the extra gil every time they sell that said item... The man that sold that cudgel for 9k just didn't understand that he could have sold it 5 times for 20k plus a peice...

How can we inform the realm of this? How can we educate everyone? Make a macro that shouts in the city everyday? But... if the prices were hidden and you didn't see what everyone had theirs sold for, you couldn't just undercut that man directly, you would have to make a choice to undercut the price of the last one purchased, and the buyer wouldn't know that someone put one in that low, they would have to just go off of what the last man bought it for. This made people hover around the real price, and took longer for the price to actually drop.

I wouldn't mind if this was implemented as this is how it was in FFXI. And it would make a difference to the market.

The problem with the original quote is to assume bob would buy it at 5k and that there is a demand for it at 5k over 3k. Supply and demand has to intersect each other. With your above example, it is clear that people are willing to buy it for 9-12k but even if you're the only one selling and the price is 25k, doesn't automatically mean there is a demand for it at 25k. This has nothing to do about education or people being dumb (if there is any is to educate people who don't understand this simple concept that selling highest possible isn't the only way to make profit. Instead, it is a simple trade off of someone who wants a quick sale and someone who can patiently wait for the slow 25k sale. Think about it this way, a guy could sell 5 12k staffs in the same time you've sold one 25k staff

Your second fault is trying to change the way people want to sell their items because of what you think is right. This is called preaching and is exactly what religious people do. Firstly, your idea of it isn't the only correct interpretation of it to begin with. Undercutting high amounts is done because people want to ensure a quick sale and to discourage competitors such as yourself to undercut more than him (which obviously worked). Whether he makes a profit or not is not your concern. Also, if the demand was high enough to meet the price that YOU set, what they are doing should have little effect on the pricing. Obviously, the demand wasn't high enough to meet your supply price so the lower prices are the current equilibrium. In short, stop being greedy and trying to change others so you can be greedy.

i have been levling a job this month i checked every now and then the lvl50 weapon + materias for it, and only bought the weapon when the price was reasonable for me

a guy sellin 20 staves at 25k each doesnt mean that 1 will sell, ppl will wait until price drops and buy 1,or dont ever bother buying

Yep. I either wait for something cheaper or buy the materials to have a friend or random craft one for me if someone is gouging for a 400% profit.

When I sell things, I try to consider the sales history average and factor in the material cost from crafting it. I'm not going to gouge prices just because someone else bought out the market and relisted for a higher price.

Generally, I look at the sale history for how I should price my stuff; if its selling a lot, I price it higher than the lowest, since its going to sell; not selling, I'll undercut by a little, not a lot, just enough to get my stuff sold...unless the item in question has been sitting, unsold, for a while, then I will lower the price to something I think will sell (like a bluebird I sold for 700K...lowest price on the MB before that was around 900K, and had been sitting there for nearly a month; think I started it at 800K and lowered it by 25K every other day til it sold).

The fact is .. The one for 40k will always without a doubt sell faster than the one listed for 50k. Nobody can argue the facts. Having severe brain damage or not.

The guy selling for 50k will either do one or 2 things. Leave his priced at 50k while history will show last purchased at 40k and hope someone bites. Or he will reduce his price to 40k hoping someone don't come in 5 min later and list one for 30k.

It's as much a free market is. If everyone was selling rocks off the grown for $1,000. Would you pick one up and sell it for $500 if you knew it would be sold in a second because when you undercut by that much bob may just buy it to put it on for $990 mean while you go grab another rock off the grown and go I got a rock for $500 anyone want it. jack goes I do and puts it back on for 985. Then you grab another rock off the grown and marry goes I want it. and put it on for 980. Mean while they wait 12 hours for someone to buy it. you just made $1500. And they only made 980.

Also. Frank who wants to sell his rock fast put it on for 600 but known his rock will sell next, But doesn't want to undercut to much.


Also. If you sell 99 for 100 gil
Vs 9 for 150 x 11 times Normaly the 9 will sell faster then the stack of 99. Most people have no use for a stack of 99 Rocks.

Stop thinking you can control the value of items on the market. The worth of your items is not the worth you choose. As long as you have competition, you do not control the price. You have to learn to accept that. Only then can you truly manipulate the trends.

Unless you have a monopoly on an item. Then you can force people to buy it at your price, which to many people is not super ethical. Think the recent comcast merger.

If you had to pay the tax when putting an item for sale then we'd have more stable economy.

The thing that might happen though is that all those cheap items wouldn't be worth selling anymore.

The gil is almost useless though so I don't see a reason to be all up in arms about it either way.

Then...you're not for a free market.

My suggestion is to put a vendor price next the mat price when putting it up on the AH. This might get people to say, whoa, what's the point of selling this so cheap. I can get more from the vendor. This would make it so there is less supply under the vendor value and therefore bring prices to a more stable point.

It is my belief that most people just want to clear inventory and don't care about the prices. If they found out they could sell it to the vendor for more, in a more convenient way, it would probably help stabilize prices.

I think the only reason undercutting is so rampant is you always see the cheapest item at the top of the list.

People undercut just so people will see their stuff first; and presumably buy it first because of that. They don't take into consideration the overall value of the item - they just want it gone.

Preventing to undercut (often) would only delay the process of the prices adapting to the current value of the item on the market, but not change the result. It would benefit incumbents and sellers, which, ironically like in real life, is often the reason for market regulations. Unlike in real life, there is even less need for market regulation, because you cannot form stable monopolies in the game.
What's wrong with a quick fluctuation in price? After the patch, the demand for low tier materia skyrocketed, prices rose accordingly then fell again as quickly as they rose, always perfectly reflecting the demand and current value of the items. On the other hand, prices for shards and other high volume goods are stable over long periods of time.

You and I are basically talking about the same thing, though.
The system I propose will stop people with large capital investment from buying up those 1 gil items and reselling them all for 10,000.

If an item actually got down to 1 gil (which I find unlikely) it would truly indicate that the supply is much too great. At some point, people will stop making it because it won't be worth the time/money to make something and sell it for less than the sum of its parts. At that point, the price will either stabilize, or go back up.

The system isn't perfect, but it's certainly more stable than what we have and at no point do I want to -stop- undercutting.

The argument for selling faster by drastically undercutting is valid, but only if you check your sales stock often enough that dramatic undercutting is worthwhile. If you check your auctions, say, once per real-life day, then it doesn't matter if your item sells immediately. If your item sells five minutes after you place it, but you don't check again for twenty-four hours, then it's no different than if the item took twenty-three hours to sell.

Price your goods to move in the timeframe that you check your listings. If you check your listings every hour, price your goods to move in under an hour. If you check your listings once per week, price your goods to move once per week. The auction history will tell you how fast goods sell, and what prices they typically sell at. If something sells ten per day at a price range of 15k to 20k, and you're not going to check your sales until tomorrow, sure you can sell it right away at 7k, but if you put it up for 15k you'll sell it anyway and have 8k more to show for it.

Just as with anything else in any MMO ever, the advantage goes to the player who plays the game more obsessively. A player who quits his job or drops out of school in order to devote himself to crafting and selling 24/7 is going to benefit the most from undercutting, as they can monitor their sales pretty nearly constantly. A more casual player who crafts for a couple hours per week in between adventuring will gain more by putting items up for the "standard" price, whatever that standard is at any given point in time.

Currently 20 listings are up for saws;


Now. Bob want his 'Bronze Saw', it doen't matter which one to him, he really needs it to get his Carpentry done.

Bob buys yours for 3,000g as it's the cheapest.However

Had you'd set yours to 4998g Bob would still have bought it.

You've now lost out on 1998g in total. And also left yourself open to be undercut further lowering the value of the item faster than people can actually purchase them.




This is how market crashes happen, where something that's worth 5,000g gets undercut by large chunks in a short period of time because, let's face it at ANY time someone could undercut your price. And by undercutting 1-2k gil you can be sure it won't be worth anything soon.

Your logic implies that if I saw a cashmere robe of casting for 2 million or so, I'd still buy it even if I had only 1.8 million. People look for the best price and buy if the price is right. The higher the price, the more thought people will put into it before they purchase. I think it is your brain that has brain damage.

I'm not saying that constantly undercutting is a good idea, though. But you honestly have no idea how marketing and economics work.
