Yoshi here. It's april fools day. Please look forward to it.
Sorry still figuring out fishing here. To anyone's knowledge has a lvl 50+ fish ever been straight caught by any bait/lure lower than the Topwater Frog?
i went to the nym river in middle la noscea and fished there for like 5 hours. none of the fish were moochable. i caught all the fish over and over including tons of hq's of them. tried various lures. didn't get the High Perch yet. must be a certain weather and time or something
I tried doing that with the chub and carp like fish to no avail. Been trying to get the coral butterfly one in upper limsa but I just mooch a blue octopus. Saltwater has few lures but that still leaves krill and glow worms in question.
jeeze, just got the Rivet Oyster from Vesper Bay in western thanalan. i tried yumizuno for 30 minutes, then switch to heavy iron jig cause i was thinking oysters are on the bottom. got a miss so i knew it was there. then another 8 misses on it for the next 45min. and i'm at 356 gathering 292 perception.
finally got it 7:31am, fair weather
only 12.0 ilms
So baits at low levels work just as well huh? That makes things a little hairy.
My bad, this whole Yoshi thing is throwing me off pretty badly xD. But yeah, that you can catch these with lower level bait/lures makes things interesting. I was trying for Jacques the Snipper today. Went two ingame days using both yumis and n. krill, all weathers, and nothing. Not even a bite. Guess I'll have to expand to try other lures now.
Junkmonger
Lugworm - Merlthor Goby (hq mooch) - wahoo (hq mooch)
Skull Valley : 5:30pm Eorza Time : Fair Weather
Chirurgeon
Moth Pupa - Striped Goby (hq mooch)
The Vein : 5:30am Eorza time : Fair weather
About silver soverign, seems like the limit to hq is very close to or exactly 170ilms, at 310 gathering i got 1 hq weighing 170.x, after boosting it to 319 i got hq up to 173, migh be abe to catch bigger but its a start, I though maybe we can figure out what gathering is needed to catch x ilms
I can confirm the Rivet Oyster can be caught in the rain and at night. Only one miss and a total of 17 casts and caught the little big guy.
I think that the gathering level required for catching a certain fish is correlated with its item level. And assuming that Silver Sovereign needs 301+ gathering and Rivet Oyster was caught with 356+ gathering I think we can make a hypothesis that:
ilvl70 - minimum gathering / perception - 251+:
Beguiler Chub
Bloody Brewer
Carp Diem
Caterwauler
Chirurgeon
Dream Goby
Gigantshark
Glimmerscale
Goldenfin
Great Gudgeon
High Perch
Matron Carp
Navigator's Brand
Octomammoth
Oschon's Printa
Stormdancer
Zalera
ilvl75 - minimum gathering / perception - 301+:
Armorer
Jacques The Snipper
Mud Golem
Old Softie
Sabertooth Cod
Silver Sovereign
Slime King
Syldra
ilvl80 - minimum gathering / perception - 351+:
Blue Widow
Crystal Perch
Dark Ambusher
Dark Knight
Faerie Queen
Ghost Carp
Judgeray
Junkmonger
Marrow Sucker
Moldva
Mud Pilgrim
Rivet Oyster
Maybe the spread (250/300/350) is not that wide (eg 290/300/310) - but I think the mechnics behind it works like that. (when you compare fishing to crafting for example)
Moldva
Midge Basket - Ala Mhigan fighting fish (Hq mooch)
Springripple Brook : 1am Eorza time : Cloudy weather
Got Gigantshark HQ from the location provided in the first post. Actually got it on the 3rd cast. Now sitting in LL to get the Octomammoth - kinda hard to limit down the catches with Lugworms - got 6 Blue Octopuses and no Octomammoths yet (gathering 334 / perception 279)
EDIT:
Just got Octomammoth HQ - also during clear weather / daytime. (lugworm)
Got Moldva on 1st try using bait/time combo from 1st post, Chirurgeon too.
Junkmonger is a mooch from Merlthor Goby (not double mooch):

I'm getting pretty burned out already. so far at these locations i've gotten no missed bites using various baits and being at each location for at least 5+ hours each. catching all HQ versions of all the fish at the spot, even HQ's of a mooch many many many times.
nym river, middle la noscea
upper soot creak, central than
the unholy heir, central than
the footfalls, western than
nophica's wells, western than
all these new fish are pretty much just higher level of certain fish at those spots. and i've caught tons of the lower level version of them.
since i've tried lots of baits at these spots, it must be very specific weather and time on them, or a very very low bite rate
Glad my info is paying off. Now someone catch other fish to make my job a bit easier. XD
I was trying to catch Judgeray in Fallgourd Float with no luck - tried bass balls, chocobo lure and some others. Managed to mooch from ALa Migho Fighting Fish and Striped Goby - but not the Judgeray - maybe weather conditions? (other ray-like fish in Mor Dhona needs gloomy weather).
Anyone still trying to catch the big fish? DO you have any links to Japanese sources?
for the most part i'm going to forget about trying to figure them out right now. i spent like another 5 hours yesterday at cedarwood, tried every bait/lure there is.
since a lot of people returned to the game, some fish sales are going good so i'm going to concentrate on making some money, brayflox speed runs, plus doing atma and new coil turns.
I am going to reply to this just so I can thank you guys for the great work you guys are doing ..
So the junkmonger can be double mooched from the wahoo and single mooched from the merlthor goby. Interesting but true.
So no new info my fellow fisher friends?
Yes - lets all join in:

Check AH too - I see that ppl caught already other fish as well - Stormdancer (Jadeite Flood), Goldenfin (LL Upper)
I have a theory: Most of the "Kings" follow the same or similar rules as their subjects, but require higher gathering to reel in.
Navigator's Brand is a straight catch like Navigator's Dagger same with Rivet Oyster/Rothlyt Oyster.
Junkmonger are mooched like Goosefish same with Gigantshark/Silver Shark, Chirurgeon/Eunuch Crayfish and Octomammoth/Blue Octopus.
Molda may seem weird but I have mooched an Ala Mhigan Fighting Fish with another Fighting Fish (to my annoyance at the time).
Stormdancer should require "Rainy" weather like Raincallers.
