"And don't call me Shirley!"
I think it's funny because it breaks the pattern. "The secret to humor is surprise." Sometimes you can get a laugh just being deadpan when everybody else is expecting a jovial comment. However, if everything was along this line? Would only be good as instructions.
As for the thread as a whole: I don't know, what -are- you supposed to call 300+ quests and events? Sure, they can use less puns but... you have less characters than a Twitter message to make something memorable while adhering to the content. How does one do that besides references and puns?
Also, the starting quest is "Primal Nature". Seems they used up their non-pun allowance on that and "Galeforce Warning". That's 2/6 of the Primal quests that don't have puns.
The quest titles are ridiculous and magnificent and I love them all. My current favourite is the level 25 Culinarian leve, "I Love Lamprey".
German Names for the quests are boring:
Eine neue Bedrohung: Garuda
Eine neue Bedrohung: Titan
Eine neue Bedrohung: Ifrit
I like the funny english names for the quests more. :/
Quest names. Dialogue for NPCs. Quest Text. FATE titles.
I'd take a bit of clever humor over a bland sentences any day of the week. There are literal gems in a lot of areas that had me burst out laughing, which I think makes the whole thing worth it. It's a game after all. It's meant to be fun.
And the fact that a lot of it is aimed at adults makes it even more funny. Like the Captain and his two Mi'qote partners. "Whose turn is it to work the lever tonight?"
I won't lie. "Go kill Titan, again" Would have made me laugh as well. Would have been even funnier it Titan extreme was something like.
"You know the drill..." To simply joke with how many times we're fighting the primal(s)
Argh... I got nothing to complain about!
I know! Quest names!
SHARKNADO. that is all
Out of control?
Perhaps Inner Quiet will help...
I like them. I've went through my achievements before just so I can giggle at all of the references.
It's actually a pretty valid argument. People just can't seem to grasp that I'm arguing quality over quantity and not against puns in general.
For every clever pun that someone posts in here, there's an equally bad and nauseating one. For example, how about "Mud About You" in Mor Dhona. It grammatically doesn't even make sense. Wtf does killing mud puppies have to do with Paul Reiser anyway? Is it funny? No. Is it clever? No. It's just bad.
You heard the OP folks, no fun allowed. Move along, nothing to see here.
You have to realize that even the bad puns can provoke a thought along the lines of "That is just stupid", where as any normal quest name wouldn't even register in most peoples minds.
It's all about creating a lasting impression! In marketing, they always aim for staying away from normal for this exact reason. Whether an advertisement is good or bad doesn't matter as long as it registers the viewer to think about what they just saw. I sure as hell can't think of a single quest name from any previous MMO (Aside from a few that involved sexual innuendo's), but I still recall the stupid pun games all the players would play in chat...(WHY?!?).
This is really a scraping the bottom of the barrel argument here. May I ask exactly what is the big deal with it? It isn't used in dialogue and developer's fun way of localizing quest names. You can not like it if you want, but it is harming no one and doesn't affect the game as a whole no matter how much you want people to believe that is the case. A person looks at it, gets a one second giggle, then moves on.
Welp =| they're not gonna change something they've stuck to for so long, specially since it's only the minority complaining.
Personally I like them, and will admit I roll my eyes at some, but I like that they try to be humurous when some of the quests are pretty serious. It also adds a bit of uniqueness. That's jusy my opinion though.
for those who don't get the reference of the quest name

Someone on the forums complaining? This is both new and exciting!
Next stage in DRG relic: How to train your Dragoon.
Next stage in MNK relic: Those coeurls were fast as lightning.
BTN ilvl90 tool quest: The Green Malm
Chocobo raising unlock quest: The Bridge on the River Kwei
Please look forward to it.
From what I understand the Japanese quest/FATE names are pretty dry too because I tried to tell a Japanese player what quest to look for and he literally had no idea which quests I was talking about because the names are radically different, so instead of having the guy who translated Zerowing they must have a guy who wanted to impress everyone with his cultural knowledge.
And the whole 'no publicity is bad publicity' argument is just dumb. No this isn't something enough to affect your gameplay, but FF14 has replaced WoW for the dumbest puns in a MMORPG. I suppose there are guys who wouldn't have continue playing if they didn't see a FATE like "Mud About You" but I really doubt it. The good ones don't count because every MMORPG tries to have good puns occasionally whenever it makes sense, so if some puns are good it's not more than what a typical MMORPG would get right.
It seems like the EN version is the only one that tries to be funny with all the puns and pop culture references. All others (JP, DE, FR) have "serious" quest names.
(just noticed that the OP tagged the thread as "no fun allowed" lol)
i was hoping they named extreme ifrit quest "ooooh laaaaawd jesus is a fire!"
Good puns are a valuable commodity and even fairly serious game use them, so it's not like anybody is ever turning down great puns for no reason. So the good stuff, if they exist, is no different than what any other game would already attempt to do.
A game is the sum of its parts. If the music of FF14 was worse than what it is now, you'd probably still play the game, but it wouldn't be as enjoyable. Likewise, although quest names are a very minor part of the game, they're what you see first so they do make an impression. If a quest name made you think 'wow that's dumb', that's still worse than a generic quest name like "Titan (Hard mode)", which you'll almost certainly be indifferent to.
It seems to me whoever did the localization figured since he can't actually make great puns, he'd go for quantity and hope he'll accidentally stumble something that's the equivalent of "FOR GREAT JUSTICE", but I'd argue he missed on all his attempts.
Do you know how hard it is to come up with good puns?
Anyone can come up with bad puns, but it's hard to come up with really good ones.
Maybe I'm some kind of sociopath but bad puns don't tend to keep me awake at night. Good ones make me laugh though so bring them on!
I hope this was intentionnal, otherwise ... /facepalmQuote:
