Step 2 : Look at the "Sells to NPC price"
Step 3 : Buy all the gear you can get which is lower than the price in Step 2

The best way to make any gil is to sell materials/gear to other crafters because they are the only characters who need to aquire anything made by crafters. Battle classes get their gear handed to them with quests so it will be a few months until they burn out their quests and are required to actually interact with the community on a economic level to suceed in the game.
Buy NPC items and resell them on the marketplace. I do this with a few key items that makes me 1000+ per sell on a constant basis.
If you have botony high enough, flax sells very high on my server.
There's always demand for shards. It's very easy to make 600-700k a week with little effort while watching TV, tube or whatever. Doesn't even take that long. Pays my repairs and alts.
Dont make any gil, seriously, SE is banning anyone with alot of gil...
Or...you know...people that spend their time crafting and making money instead of running dungeons endlessly. The witch hunts by asshurt people who stumble along with their 50k gil at all times make me laugh. I took every DoH to 50 during 1.0 and now instead of slamming my head against dungeon runs for DL gear I can craft 3 ilvl70 pieces to sell which gives me a free one for my toon.
If u want gil farm mats and make food, ppl will always buy food.
Leatherworking and Weaving.
Make crafting/gathering gear. It sells better than everything else and doesn't have insane material costs.
I dont have millions of gold, but I know a few people that has 6-20mil.
Most of them got their first bucket of gold off the initial wave of level 50s who paid top gil for their relic, others just farmed materias and sell, using their own crafted lvl 40+ gear running fate then convert.
Nowadays are transactions between gold buyers and 2-stars high quality items, they'll pay million for each piece... but as you know, SE is cracking down on these RMTs so expect the cash flow to slow down now.
