It only bothers me if the terms are different.
Going by OP's example: DPS and DD have 2 very different meanings, and shouldnt be used interchangeably. Pally and PLD are just different abbreviations of Paladin.
I've always preferred DPS to DD. DPS just sounds better and feels more natural to say than "dee dee" to me.
The only terms that really bug me are the nicknames for classes like pally and shammy. Of course, the absolute worst term anyone could use is "toon".
I can sort of see this as an issue for those who haven't played WoW. Having played that and various other MMOs over the past 12-13 years, you just get used to the terminology.
Aetherial Manipulation - Intervene
Repelling Shot - Disengage
Hallowed Ground - Bubble
One Ilm Punch - Purge
Things like that.
In the case of DPS vs DD, haven't really seen that one thrown amount much. DEEPS vs DEE DEE. heh
Tank and spank is about the only one that annoys me.
As long as you understand what they are talking about, what should it matter? Potayto, potawto. Besides, I personally refer to anything you stand in, cone, frontal attack, or otherwise, as "stupid". Yeah, don't stand in stupid.
Until then you should throw more DOTS
But on topic, I prefer to just use the full phrase/word so I don't get confused, like Archer and Arcanist. Then again, I'm a fast reader and don't mind non abbreviations.
I don't care where a term comes from. in fact people annoy me immensely when they try to force 'FFXI terms' upon us (eh, it's always been 'DD' in LOTRO too, and that's teh game I played the longest *shrug*)
it annoys me because this is .not. FFXI
'pally'? yeh that one I don't get simply because PLD is much shorter anyway. lol
btw...as someone who's played MMOs BEFORE WoW (in fact I never played WoW and usually have no clue what people mean with WoW terms unless I already know them from .other. games where they also use WoW terms instead of the game's terms.... like 'mt' used to confuse the HELL out of me in SWTOR because TOR DOES NOT HAVE TELLS IT HAS WHISPERS DAMMIT!! and LOTRO used 'wc' for 'wrong chat/channel')... DD for me is still 'direct damage', not 'damage dealer'. so the arguments about 'dps is not the job' is kind of funny to me, because 'dd' isn't the job, either ;)
might as well do it old school old school and look for tanker, heals, dmg and mana pots ;D
edit:
hell yes, a TAUNT is ANY skill that will get the mob to you. you are TAUNTING the mob. it is NOT a specific skill. it's any skill that will put you on top of the aggro (enimity) chain. you only have one 'provoke' skill, but you'll get several taunts over the course of the 50 level.
the only term i hate is "toon".
other than that i don't really care.
