I don't know why you guys keep using the $120/yr basis. To use this figure, it automatically assumes ONLY LEGACY members are allowed to sign up for the lifetime option, which of course, will bring on more whiners.
Therefore, the proper yearly cost should be $180.
BTW, as much as we like to see it happen to FFXIV, no one version of game is going to last 20 years. 20 years ago, we just started playing DOOM on 640x480. :D

Back on topic, the term Lifetime means pay now and never pay again, If everyone were to do this option, where would there money come from after the initial payout to SE? I'm not saying everyone would do that option if they offered it, but if that were to be the case where would there money come from exactly?
And mind you, even if we wanted to waste our time discussing impossibilities, if say even only 500,000 people were to subscribe to the game (and that'd be a fairly modest playerbase for an AAA MMO) and them all were inspired by God to do a lifetime subscription, that'd mean 150 million dollars dropped on the game at release, without counting box sales.
I'm rather sure Wada and Yoshida would improvise a little ballet in their offices if that was to happen. -

Even if that was the case, you would never give the actual figure that would be worth. People sell "lifetime" bundles at a significantly reduced price. We're talking about a subscription to an online game here.
Also "for the quality of the game", the game isn't out yet. Considering the reputation of the game, it is one of the most despised MMOs in the world on a global basis. Its reputation is horrendous. I'm sure ARR will be great, but who knows if it will fix the horrible reputation 1.x put forth. -

Annnnyways, forget about it. Like I said I feel this would be a "last resort" move if they really needed the money in bulk. I just don;t see the need for them to do it as a company, that has it's head well above water.
Your right it is a "Commercial move" when given the circumstances that need to arise for any company to go that path.
